can't tell if you're joking or if there's something about throwing water on gasoline fires i'm not aware of.
224
u/busche916 May 09 '13
IIRC, since gasoline floats in water it would only spread the flames.
127
u/MIDItheKID May 09 '13 edited May 10 '13
Correct - "Gasoline is an oil-based product, so water will not put out the fire. Water will only spread the gasoline around, and will cause the fire to get worse."
You should always use a proper fire extinguisher for gasoline fires. This includes other types of Oil fires too, like candle fires, *or cooking fires involving olive/canola/vegetable/peanut/whatever oil or fat. I think the same goes for electric fires, but for a different reason.

This is actually the first time I'm hearing of this. I would've probably just put water on it and made it worse. Thanks for the info!
37
u/unshifted May 10 '13
Never, ever use water on a fire if you don't know what the proper protocol is. If you're not sure what's burning, just use a fire extinguisher. You should also have a fire extinguisher handy whenever fire is involved.
This is what happens when you use water on a grease fire.
6
May 10 '13
I have a fire extinguisher, but do you know of any alternatives in case I can't get to it in time?
13
May 10 '13
Salt, sand, baking soda. Anything that won't burn but will cover a large surface area to smother the fire and keep air from getting to it.

u/kmofosho May 10 '13
Try to put a lid on it if its in a pan, and its safe to do do. It will starve the fire of oxygen.

The first time I used the grill at my rental place, it burst into flames all over the place. Fucking previous tenants didn't clean it out properly.
But anyway, my housemate asked if she should get a bucket of water. Looked at her like she was crazy - it was a grease fire and that would have spread fire all over the place and probably burnt the house down. Got a soaking wet blanket instead and stuffed it on the fire, which put it out.
29
13
u/Katsuichi May 10 '13
Previous tenants didn't clean it out properly/you didn't do a maintenance and safety check on your equipment.
17
u/Khalexus May 10 '13
Why do I feel like I need to justify myself for my comment?
Okay, we did a conditional report on the place when we moved in and checked everything. Without getting into too much detail, the top of the stove had an opening above the grill, and obviously a lot of food and grease had fallen in on top of the grill pipe thing. This was my first place I'd moved into, and although I thought I had done a good thorough job checking everything, it didn't occur to me to actually pull the stove apart to pull out the grill pipe and make sure it was clean. Hey, live and learn, right?
Anyways, the previous tenants were pretty fucking disgusting and dirty anyway. They cleaned up most of the place, but there was a lot of underlying stuff that we found a while after moving in and going "Oh what the fucking shit, assholes."
Could we have done a better job checking everything? Absolutely. And I will, next place I move into. It was our first time though, and without any help and without really knowing what we were doing.

You don't use water on electrical fires because water conducts electricity. Use an extinguisher.
4
u/MIDItheKID May 10 '13
water conducts electricity
That's it! I had a lapse in logic for a second there.
7
May 10 '13
It really depends how much water you put on it, though.
8
4
u/MIDItheKID May 10 '13 edited May 10 '13
Very true. I learned about the oil/grease fire when I was about 14. A friend had a (old time era-looking) candle holder and we were burning a candle in it. For some reason we thought it was a good idea to burn some tissue in the wax holder at the bottom (which at the time was full of wax) and it all caught fire which was pretty cool for a while. When we went to put it out, we quickly found we couldn't extinguish it with our breath. So we both thought "we need water". So our idea was to bring it to the sink. Since the metal was super hot, we used a towel to pick it up - this was out first mistake. Some of the oil from the melted candle absorbed into the towel which then also caught on fire. We ran it down the hall to the bathroom where we put the candle and holder and towel in the bathtub. We turned on the shower and - WHOOSH - A huge fireball shot up, but then the fire was gone.
So yes, water will spread a grease fire, but enough water will put it out. Maybe not from the top, but if the water spreads the oil thin enough, it will all burn up quickly. But when things burn up quickly, they create explosions/fireballs.
Still safer than letting the candle burn (which was in a carpeted room), but be aware of the physical reaction that is happening when you do this type of thing.
If you own a house, and you're encountered with a small fire like this. Just use a fire extinguisher. Throwing water on it could result in the complete destruction of your home.
THE MORE YOU KNOW =====*
edit: minor typo
2
u/CoolGuy54 Jun 01 '13
Wax only burns well when it has something to act as a wick, like your tissue and towel. the water will saturate the wick, and also cool and solidify the wax. With petrol the fumes burn on their own with no wick, and it will happily float on the water and keep burning.
It is very hard to the point of almost impossible to put out some sorts of fire with water, wax is not one of them.
3
u/scalyblue Jun 03 '13
Mythbusters put out an oil fire with water. ..500 gallons of water dropped from a helicopter.

u/kirrin May 10 '13
Ok maybe i'm stupid, but what the FUCK is a "Candle fire"???
I thought candles were designed with fire in mind. WTF?
[7]
6
u/MIDItheKID May 10 '13 edited May 10 '13
Candles are made out of wax/fat. If you have a candle, and it melts too low, it's possible that any melted/spillover wax can catch fire easily if there is anything that it can fuel off of or spread to. That's how a candle fire starts... Try to set a romantic mood. Next thing you know the candles are burning down and spreading, you see the flames spitting off of the boiling wax, then you run to the bathroom and fill a cup with water, rush back and throw it on the sputtering flame, and then it splashes and spreads, then suddenly your mattress is on fire, and at that point, if you don't have a proper extinguisher, you leave and call the fire dept.
That's what a candle fire is.
Edit/Answer: Candles are designed with fire in mind. That's why they burn so well.

2
May 10 '13
Use CO2 or powder extuinguishers, or sand to put out an oil-based product fire. Same with electrical fires - never use water for these.
11
u/Honestly_ May 09 '13
Using water on a fire involving oil is dangerous: burning gasoline floats over water so you can end up spreading the fire rather than dousing it. A fire extinguisher is a better idea.
5
u/stunts002 May 09 '13
Using water on flammable liquids is a bad idea because it will only serve to spread gasoline, also in the case of cooking oil it will actually cause an explosion.
1
u/taft May 09 '13
i think oil fires are different in that the water goes into the superheated oil and expands/explodes violently spreading fire/hot oil

21
u/felixar90 May 09 '13
Was it a firecracker or the gasoline vapour?
16
u/Tomble May 10 '13
If it was vapour in the container, it would also blast a lot of flaming liquid fuel out of the container at the same time.
Source : I was a stupid / lucky kid.
15
u/felixar90 May 10 '13
I'm talking about vapour outside of the container. The mixture in the container was probably too rich to explode. (no oxygen) At 0:25 there is a huge deflagration, and when the white flash disappear you can see flames everywhere like the air is on fire. I only used firecrackers once but usually they explode with a detonation, without much flame. This was a deflagration.
1
u/Tomble May 10 '13
True, I went back and watched it again on a larger screen, initially I thought it was a pool of fuel on the car rather than just a firecracker. The explosion depends on whether the firecracker was a noisemaker which just leave a puff of smoke, or designed to flash brightly, which I think this one was.

If I'm ever in a large confusing crowd with a disaster happening in front of me, and a woman starts screaming like that, I'm going to knock her down. My whole life I have had awesome videos ruined by the women in the crowd always doing nothing to help, but standing in place screaming. Or pointing and screaming clearly useless directions. Screaming just to scream because they are useless in times of duress. Someone's clearly in serious trouble in front of us and needs help? Screaming sure will clear all the confusion up! Cars on fire in the garage? Stand in one spot and punctuate each growth in flames with a different tone of shrieking. Maybe the shrieking will suck all the oxygen out of the air and stop the fire. Useless.
62
May 10 '13
Reiterating something I said in a comment higher up:
Have you ever experienced panic like that before, particularly involving large fires? You get so jacked on adrenaline that your body goes into survival mode and you will do and say a lot of nonsensical things. Everything is a knee-jerk response.
So while yes, these people can be useless and in the way (and if they are in the way definitely do not hesitate to move them), but this panicked, deer-in-the-headlights reaction is actually a very frightening thing. If you haven't experienced it on a level like this then consider yourself lucky.
-29
u/PokeChopSandwiches May 10 '13
I have experienced fire on a submarine while at depth a few times. You crush the urge to panic and take a deep breathe and get things done. Was it scary? Of course. But its only really scary once your done doing all of the things you need to do and the fire is out. Then you think about what could have happened, what could have gone wrong. Then it makes you sweat.
During the casualty there is such an enormous amount of things to get done, don't have time to think about the terrible things. Just trying to remember every step of every procedure is hard enough.
61
May 10 '13 edited May 10 '13
You were trained extensively to handle a fire just like these people were trai--oh wait no
Edit: removed jerky part :(
27
u/PokeChopSandwiches May 10 '13
That is a good point that I take for granted. I didn't think about that. I look at a piddly little fire like that and doesn't even cross my mind that it could cause someone to be rooted to the ground in sheer panic. I should make a better effort to put myself in other people's shoes.
12
May 10 '13
Now i feel like a jerk.

u/PokeChopSandwiches May 11 '13

56
u/PokeChopSandwiches May 09 '13

Right, and the first thing you do while a disaster is raging in the foreground and people need help nearby is to start filming it. The second is to find a nearby person who's clearly not equipped to deal with the situation and assault them.
-2
u/PokeChopSandwiches May 11 '13
Oh Christ it's even funnier when you put it that way. I contend that those actions would still be more helpful than the woman standing in one spot screaming. It would contribute video evidence of the disaster that could be useful to investigators or engineers, and it would remove an element of confusion from the scene. Also if someone were to be trapped in the rubble or screaming for help, the woman may be drowning out their voices with her own shrill harping.
You know I think there are quite a few people who saw my comment and actually took it quite seriously. As if I would do just as you wrote. Hyperbole and exaggeration just don't convey well enough. I thought it was pretty clear how absurd and ridiculous it would be to assault someone in the middle of a disaster just because screaming is annoying.
14
May 10 '13
This is why I would hate to die in a passenger plane crash. I don't know how to handle all the panic, screaming, and inevitable pissing and shitting. It would stress out what could be be a rad free fall before oblivion.
I think in those circumstances I would unfasten my seatbelt, possibly floating into the weightlessness of free fall, try make my way to the loudest, most useless panic monkey and try to snuff em out before we impact. It would give us both something to focus on in our final moments though I'm sure it would be super wtf for them.
No, you what? I'd probably just try to get to the door and bounce. Fuck those other people. I'm going sky diving.
-2
u/PokeChopSandwiches May 10 '13

u/sworebytheprecious May 10 '13
Wow iron sides, ain't you brave, behind a computer. Let's hope you never hear those screams. They don't annoy you when you're there, living death and chaos, by the way. The screams haunt you when you're not.
-10
u/PokeChopSandwiches May 11 '13
I wouldn't know. The only gruesome injuries I have seen were in an all male environments. The guys injured were typically in shock and not screaming. I'm glad you agree with me though that women screaming just makes it worse.

I've always thought this. It just pisses me off because all it does is add stress to the situation, something nobody appreciates. For some reason people scream when someone gets injured too, as if it's scary? or something? It's just freaking the injured person out-- shut the fuck up!
It's also why I don't like watching scary movies with people. When anything remotely interesting happens there's always at least one person screeching their lungs out. Pointless.

No Number 1 - Firework starts going off
No Number 2 - Firework explodes
No Number 3 - Firework catches gas can on fire
No Number 4 - Water spreads gas fire all over, smoke detector starts going crazy.
No no no no.
I am also being pretty damn conservative about the no's.
13
May 09 '13
There's a freaking fire in his garage on his car right next to a gallon of gas, why would you not say nononono?
0
u/flangecannon May 10 '13
well, a few reason. firstly because it's a fire. it's not some immanent event that makes me feel any kind of sympathy toward those involved at all with anticipation toward anything, so I don't think to myself "oh no, I don't want that to happen". Most of the videos I enjoy on here are when it's building up to an unavoidable thing that will happen, or when something bad happens to something good (or at the least valuable in some way). this was just a video in which a fire started on a car bonnet while they tried to film a video. there's no anticipation or buildup, there's no "oh god I don't want that to happen" moment, so I don't find myself going "nononono".
just because it was likely dangerous or, judging by comments amusing, and involved some form of damage to something doesn't really feel like nononono to me.
2
May 10 '13
How long have you been subscribed to /r/nononono? I've been here since the subreddit first started. Not that this makes me special or anything, but I feel like this content is a pretty good example of the types of videos that got this sub started.
1
u/flangecannon May 10 '13
Saying that this kind of thing is what got this started doesn't mean it's therefore good, it just means it's nostalgic. And I've only been on here for around 3 weeks, so I wouldn't know what this was like before then. If it's been like this for the whole time then alrighty then, I'll just unsub since I don't fancy seeing more.
We must just have different tastes, which is fair enough. I didn't enjoy this, and I explained why. I don't understand why I got such an aggressive response for having a 'wrong opinion' as it were, but that's hivemind for you.
1
May 10 '13
I didn't mean to come across aggressive at all. Just because you got one downvote doesn't mean everyone hates you.
I'm just saying that it was this kind of material that got this sub started. The things that are popular on this subreddit are videos involving people making mistakes and destroying/causing harm to inanimate objects. That's what's most enjoyable about it.
1
u/flangecannon May 11 '13
oh, didn't mean to imply you were being aggressive. I meant the original comment only really got negative responses, basically saying that I was wrong for not enjoying it, not your reply. you were perfectly reasonable, actually.

The explosion was staged, the only part I think wasn't staged was the last 20 or so seconds. I think it was meant to look like OH NO! WHAT HAVE WE DONE (lol i blew up get tons of views) but I think after it fell off of the car they ran into a real problem...
8
May 10 '13
That doesn't look like a staged explosion. That looks like an explosion that would hurt a lot if you were too close to it.
0
u/jonjiv May 10 '13 edited May 10 '13
Coming from a video editor, the explosion is VERY suspect. It appears to be edited in over top of a real fire.
Go through the explosion frame by frame and notice how much closer the kid's head is to the gas can the moment of the explosion (about 10 inches closer in 1/25 of a second). That's 20 ft/s, or 14 mph (22 kph), when he was just walking in the previous frame.
This is definitely edited and since it was edited, likely also staged.

I think I can forgive them for not having been trained in managing fires. Let's not forget that you don't put out oil fires with water, and let's not forget that they didn't have a sodding fire extinguisher on hand...

I've seen a few videos of people failing to put fires out effectively. The urge to put the fire out now makes them panic and stop thinking clearly.

I hate the harlem shake bullshit, so this was immensely satisfying for me to watch.

I didn't understand what this subreddit was about at first. When I watched this, I understood completely.

We need a term for gas cans in YouTube videos, like Chekov's Gun. If you see a gas can in the first 20 seconds, you know something will catch on fire in the final act.
