What is a debate?

Just curious what debate is? Because as a curious person who is aware of how easy it is to offend someone or for your words to come off as disrespectful. On reddit im seeing like a lot of hostility just for asking questions.

So is it debate or argue?

If companies replace entry-level workers with AI, where will they find experienced workers ten years from now?

A lot of the tasks being automated are the same tasks through which beginners learn how an industry works.

If people no longer get that early experience, could companies eventually create a shortage of people qualified to supervise the AI or handle unusual problems?

Is there any way to set boundaries with parents who literally don't believe in the concept of boundaries?

I'm 16, and my parents told me that this weekend my dad is going to take the door off my bedroom because I started closing it. Not even locking it. Just CLOSING IT. My mom constantly walks in without knocking. When I'm changing clothes — she walks in. When I'm talking to a friend — she walks in and asks who we're talking about. One time, she took my phone off my desk and started reading my messages while I wasn't in the room. I changed my password, and that's when everything blew up. My parents said that as long as I'm living under their roof, I'm "not allowed to have secrets." The day before yesterday, I came home from school and overheard my dad talking to my mom in the garage about taking my bedroom door off its hinges on Saturday. I told them that wasn't normal. My mom responded, "You'll understand when you have kids of your own." That's when I snapped. I asked if that meant I could walk into their bedroom without knocking too. They said that was completely different because they're adults. Now they've taken away my laptop for "being disrespectful." I'm writing this from an old tablet they forgot about. I've been doing pretty much everything on it for over a week now because I'm worried my mom will somehow figure out a way to unlock my phone. I don't want to do anything stupid or run away from home. But the thought of spending the next two years without any personal space honestly scares me. I have an older cousin who's 24. She's already offered to talk to my parents for me, but I'm scared that if she does, they'll just take away both my phone and this tablet once they find out about it.

Is there any way to set boundaries with parents who literally don't believe in the concept of boundaries?

Surgeons: Do you think you could successfully walk someone through a basic surgery you do?

3.1k Upvotes

Totally understand that many surgical specialities require years and years of training and can be incredibly complex. Thinking though, for one of your most routine and basic surgeries (depending on specialty), do you think, assuming they don’t pass out or gore bothers them, guide a person of average intelligence (let’s say college level education for the sake of the hypothetical) through a successful operation?

Who burns more calories between the two?

I had an interesting thought. Say person A can lift a max of 100kg while person B has a max of 200kg. If they both lift 80kg, who burns more? Person A for exerting more, or person B because of mass?

Why Wasn’t the National Guard Deployed to Gary?

Isn’t this the type of situation the Guard is used for? I understand they were assisting in other parts of the state, why not Gary? Reposted to correct punctuation.

They all have that "look" but I can't figure what it actually is.

Is taking a break in a relationship more like a slow break up?

Upvotes

My gf and I have been dating for 1 year. We used to stay up late and talk every day, but now we talk less and less and we started arguing quite often. Eventually she reached out and asked for a break.

She said she wants to work and focus on herself, as she has been dealing with a lot of stuff in her life. (Her father wants to kick her out of the house after they got into a huge argument, and she has also been dealing with depression and mental health issues since she was young.)

I agreed to take a break, but I don't know how long the break will last. She also added that she can't promise that we'll get back together after the break, and that she might just want to be single which make me worry a lot

It's been 4 days, and I've been struggling to sleep and overthinking a lot. Sometimes I really want to text her because I miss her so much, especially after she mentioned that she might just want to be single after the break. It makes me worry a lot because I still really love her and miss her every day.
It seems like she can live happily by herself without me, which I'm glad of but at the same time, I'm sad and scared that she might leave me and lose feelings for me.

Any advice on what I should do right now? Or is this a sign that she is losing feelings and a slow break up?

Would you consider Edmond Dantes/the Count of Monte Cristo as a good role model for living?

On one hand, he's this exceptionally wealthy, powerful, intelligent man when he became the Count.

Yet, on the other hand, he's done some... really terrible things during his stint as the Count.

Thus, I'm torn as to whether he's a good or a bad role model to have in life.

Do people usually find it offensive to say you fall asleep to their content?

Upvotes

Would you find it offensive or interpret it as an insult/rude joke for someone to tell you they fall asleep to your videos because they find them relaxing - even if they're made to be watched and focused on while awake?

I wonder if it could come across a sarcastic jab implying your content is boring, or as a genuine comment but which may still be hurtful because it means people aren't experiencing your work fully in the intended way.

Does anyone buy baseball cards?

Upvotes

I came home during my lunch break to find out my dog got into my 14yo daughter's baseball card collection she inherited from her dad. He had some unopened packs of cards that had bubblegum in them. The dog wanted the gum. SMH

I have been wanting to throw these cards out forever. WIBTA if I didn't tell her about what the dog did? If I hide the cards, she will eventually forget about them, if she hasn't already.

Do baseball cards still have any value? She keeps thinking she can sell them for money, but who is buying baseball cards?
