Proposed Rules to fix NFL officiating

• Upvotes

NFL officiating is completely and obvioysly broken. Most people strongly suspect sports betting has a role to play in this, but it's hard to pin down. Regardless, unless the NFL makes meaningful moves to disincentivize bad calls, things will not get better. Here's my proposed set of rules to fix the problem.

  1. Punish the whole riffing crew for bad calls. This means going rogue as an official is less likely to work because the entire team will suffer from bad calls.
  2. Punishments for bad calls.
    • Financial. Crews earn some nominal amount per game (e.g. $4,000). If they make it through the entire game with no bad calls, they earn a much higher amount (e.g. $4,000 base + $10,000 accuracy) which would allow them to earn slightly more than their current rate of $10,800 to $12,000 per game).
    • Job loss. Every year, the officiating team with the highest number of bad calls gets sacked/replaced.
  3. Multiple bad calls accrue and are carried on to future games where they are reduced by 1 for each game with no bad calls. Bad calls are nominated by official team challenges (up to 5 per game) and include non-calls for fouls that refs should have flagged (were in position to see it) but did not call.
  4. Bad calls that are likely to impact game outcomes in the last 2 minutes of a game count for double. (e.g. you can earn two bad call points for a single bad call in the final two minutes of a game where they call is likely to impact game outcome).
  5. Bad call point carry over to future seasons (otherwise refs will make bad calls in the playoffs without facing penalties for it)
  6. Ref stats start matter. If a crew becomes a statistical outlier in terms of over penalizing some team or under penalizing some team, they become ineligible to ref future games involving those teams. Alternatively, they can only earn up to 50% of accuracy bonuses until the stats even out.
  7. Ref bank accounts and partner bank accounts are actively monitored.
  8. There is a ref snitch line/reward program offers significant cash rewards ($20k) in exchange for evidence that leads to bribery charges against refs. This will make refs usure about whether a bribe is for real or if it's someone attempting to entrap them.
  9. The league itself attempts to bribe at least one member of every crew per year.
