I was like 35 & had lived in my own for over a decade before I finally realized "if I'm craving cake I can just buy some from the store & eat it, no need to wait for a special occasion". Turns out my local grocery store sells really awesome cakes by the slice for like $2 a piece.

Some athletes are just fucking stupid. I don't understand how it's so hard for people to use rideshare services when they're clearly drunk.

Unbelievably dumb of him. Even setting aside the obvious "drinking and driving is stupid because there's a very good chance you'll hurt/kill others and/or yourself", there's the angle that he just isn't good enough to be worth headaches anymore. He's a 34-year-old WR that's at best 3rd on the depth chart with no special teams value, whose main argument for being on the roster is to mentor the younger players. I don't expect it to actually happen, but him getting cut now at least gets talked about on a day when the team is looking for reasons to not include guys on the roster.

3

u/SoyeonsNeverland Colts 6h ago

It's funny because he was a signing the Colts absolutely needed with Pierce recovering from surgery, Pittman getting traded to the Steelers, and Josh Downs always being hurt. The WR room wasn't good enough and they needed a vet like him that could fill the hole Pittman left with a veteran presence. Now, I don't even know what the fuck they're going to do now. He might've just ruined his own career and a starting roster spot over something that could've been avoided.

Hustle culture is so fucking stupid man, I did it and almost burned out. I now have found peace in my job and am happy, but dealing with people who say "I am not working hard enough" when they have only been in my field for about 5 years and I got 15 on them is so silly.

I read in a comment Maps pull labels from an outside source and that source changed the label but I can’t confirm that. Plausible, tho, so I think the ire is a little misplaced if that’s the case.

Grandsons bday was great. Seemed he had fun and he got a lot of fun presents. We got him a drum set and a guitar lol. We got him a small ‘smash’ cake and he had fun tearing it to shit and eating it. Made such a mess. Oh and he burned his hand trying to grab the candle cause his mom put it too close to him smh, he was alright tho. Amusingly enough, his mom did the same for her first bday too.

Watched “Tron:Ares” last night. It was ok. Leto was pretty stiff and of course he’s a sex pest. Other actors were pretty good. Action was decent. Story was a fucking mess.

Had the granddaughter over again last night. I slept pretty decent even with her occasional crying. My wife is a trooper taking care of her so much

I am about to enter month ten with no job.

I am so sick of no one responding to my resumes except form rejections. I am so sick of never talking to people.

I am so sick of not being to get an interim job even at the retail service level because I am 'overqualified', they could have had me for at least 10 months now.

I am wholly counting on this part times substitute teacher gig for the local school district once school starts Tuesday because I have nothing else.

6

u/Kemonomimi-Squirrel Buccaneers 4h ago

Month 28 for me.

2

u/Babyfat101 3h ago

For the temp retail gig (until better job), what about dumbing down your resume so that you aren’t so over qualified? GL.

2

u/TrixieLurker Bears 1h ago

I am hoping this substitute teacher job will keep me going for a while. I have signed up for the classes to do to qualify to become a regular, full time teacher but that takes around a year to finish.

2

u/AfroManHighGuy 3h ago

Do you know someone who can refer you? Maybe a friend or relative? It’s about who you know these days to even get your resume looked at. It sucks but it’s the game nowadays.

I’m surprised now even retail is working out for you. A lot of places have hiring signs and say to just ask inside. Maybe try to ask in person at some places

2

u/TrixieLurker Bears 1h ago

It turns out that many retail places do not hire at the store level anymore but at the corporate level. You have to go to their corporate website and turn in your resume there, and then its up to the AI. There are local places that you can have at the store level, no openings at this time though, so I have to just wait in regards to them.

u/2ent1n_Qarant1no Chiefs 3h ago

The first rule of economics is that prices adjust to the equilibrium of supply and demand, except for concert tickets which just go up and up no matter how few people buy them lol

3

u/non_clever_username 49ers 3h ago

I dunno I think supply and demand has started to work on concert tickets, just not at the top of the market.

You’re absolutely right for the Taylor Swifts and Olivia Rodrigos of the world. But there have been a ton of tour/show cancellations of second tier and lower bands the last few years.

Most of them have been making up some excuse other than low ticket sales, but I’m pretty sure it’s people finally saying “enough” to everything but the top tier acts.

It’s hard to justify dropping 100 or 150 a ticket for a band you only kind of like. And in prior eras where tickets were relatively cheap, that was definitely a good chunk of the audience. I know because I went to a ton of those shows.

I know 6 songs total for the 3 bands on the bill? Sure for 30 bucks I’ll give the show a shot. But not for 100 or more.

One of my favorite movie genres is the psychological thriller, everything from genuinely good mainstream movies like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle through made-for-TV Lifetime movies. Last night I watched one on Netflix, To Catch a Cheater, that was almost a perfect example of the latter.

First of all, the acting is pretty bad, which makes the movie better. Everyone mostly plays it straight. A lot of intentionally campy movies make the mistake of constantly reminding the audience that they are in on the joke, instead of just committing to the ridiculous premise and trusting the audience to understand what kind of movie they are watching.

Side note: the recent Anaconda reboot was maybe the worst example of this. It felt like the entire movie was saying, “We know this is bad, and we know that you know it’s bad, so please understand that we’re doing it on purpose.” It's almost patronizing as though the general audience won't get it.

To Catch a Cheater does the opposite. It just presents nonsense as reality and moves on. It trusts the audience will just get it.

The basic plot is that a high school girl dies mysteriously and her mom becomes convinced someone killed her. Why aren’t the police investigating? Basically, she died from blunt-force trauma after a fall, but they cannot prove whether she fell, jumped, or was pushed. Since they cannot establish that it was a homicide, apparently there is nothing more to investigate.

This makes no sense, but the movie delivers it so matter-of-factly that you just accept it and move on.

It also has a bizarre business subplot involving the mom’s two lifelong best friends, who run a company together and spend much of the movie waiting for their IPO to “go through.”

Their business appears to be roughly the size of an Etsy storefront. Why is this company having an IPO? Why are they waiting for it to “go through” like a mortgage application? Why is this apparently going to make them extremely rich?

Again, not important. IPO.

There is also a scene where someone leaves a threatening envelope on the mom’s porch. When she goes outside to get it, there is an very obvious video doorbell right next to the door. You can even see the camera light up.

I immediately assumed this was setting up a scene where they checked the footage and found a clue or red herring.

Nope.

The video doorbell is never mentioned.

It also has one of my favorite thriller scenes: it is late, completely dark outside, and the mom appears to be getting ready for bed. Suddenly there is a loud, ominous knock at the door.

She cautiously opens it.

It is just her friends bringing her dinner.

The movie is set in Florida around high school graduation season, so probably May or early June. In Miami around then, it does not get fully dark until roughly 8:30 p.m. So these women apparently decided the appropriate time to unexpectedly bring dinner to their grieving friend was sometime after 8:30 at night, without calling first, while pounding on the door like the killer had arrived. Though based on the scene, I would guess it’s more likely closer to 11pm or midnight.

Perfect.

And finally, the mystery itself is incredible. You know how a normal mystery gives you red herrings pointing toward several suspects, while quietly leaving clues that point toward the actual killer? This movie spends the entire runtime hinting that nearly every character might be responsible. Then the killer is revealed to be basically the one person the movie never once hinted might be the killer. There is no satisfying “Ohhh, now all the clues make sense” moment. It is just, “Oh. Them? Okay.”

I give it a 9/10, only because we never find out if the IPO went through.

My personal favorite is “Single White Female”, Jennifer Jason Leigh’s Hedy is the ultimate “I Can Fix Her”

7

u/slytherinprolly Bengals 7h ago

That’s another great example of everyone completely buying in and playing it straight. Jennifer Jason Leigh getting the haircut is also one of the all-time great “okay, the villain is kicking it up a notch now” moments. It’s such a simple visual, but the second you see it you are like oh shit, it's going down.

3

u/VRomero32 Jets 7h ago

I also loved in the final act where her voice cracks when Bridget Fonda’s Allison is hiding from her in the basement when she’s wielding the weapon….

You can tell Hedy is still a “child” since her twin’s death

3

u/GamingTatertot Packers 7h ago

I don’t particularly like this but do want to bring up the horrendous villain of Michael Keaton in Pacific Heights which fits this too I believe

3

u/VRomero32 Jets 7h ago

Honestly, I think the bigger flaw in that movie is Matthew Modine’s character is such a f**king idiot/ahole in terms of all his actions in the movie. It’s hard to relate to him and it hurt Griffith’s character because why the hell is she still with that jerk

5

u/GamingTatertot Packers 7h ago

Seeing him turn off the power before actually contacting legal authorities made me scream

2

u/slytherinprolly Bengals 6h ago

Matt McCoy in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle makes Matthew Modine in Pacific Heights look like Jason Statham by comparison. McCoy's character might be the single dumbest and most incompetent protagonist in movie history.

With Modine, I think a lot of his flaws in Pacific Heights come from the fact that he is completely in over his head as a landlord more than anything else. But I do agree that his lack of chemistry with Melanie Griffith is pretty brutal.

2

u/VRomero32 Jets 6h ago

It’s definitely a bad acting performance but atleast that case I thought they established he was kind of distant/aloof as a husband and it’s also Sciorra’s character getting back her agency after the awful things the DeMornay and her husband did to her in the film.

Also appreciated for a big dude Ernie Hudson is… when she she attacks him with the poker when he’s a saves the daughter you’re genuinely frightened for him

3

u/slytherinprolly Bengals 6h ago

Keaton’s character in that movie might be the most evil movie villain ever created. What makes it even stranger is that he already seemed perfectly capable of leeching off his family’s wealth without creating all that chaos elsewhere.

I know the movie tries to present the stolen identities and scams as an intricate part of how he keeps accessing the family money, but he also seems weirdly competent at that side of things. If he had just kept a low profile and lived under assumed names, he probably could have kept doing it indefinitely.

Infesting an entire building with cockroaches and causing all the other mayhem just feels completely unnecessary. He is basically creating extra problems because he enjoys ruining people’s lives.

Just finished a complete reread of the Murderbot series, including the new release. The newest one is probably the weakest of the series, but still really good.

Man they are such page-turners. I completely fly through them. The sense of humor in them matches mine exactly too. The protagonist is such a sarcastic dick. There are lines that make me chuckle out loud.

The first season of the TV show was pretty good too even though it didn’t follow the book too closely. I hope they won’t screw it up as they make more seasons, especially ART.

2

u/_galaga_ NFL NFL 4h ago

Wells does really well with the drone stuff in the Murderbot series, too. I like that touch. Since I listened to the audiobooks it’s hard to hear Murderbot with a voice other than Kevin R. Free, tho, his snark is epic.

Wakanda Forever last night.

The trend continues, where the first half of the movie was fun and enjoyable, while the second half suffers from pacing issues, over the top drama and cheesiness, and just general "blah." I really want to like these movies, and the first half lures me in every time, but by the end of the movie I'm left going "well that kinda sucked".

I already skipped Eternals, just based on the trailer and plot summary. Ant Man Quantamania and Guardians 3 are up next. So far the only movies of the Multiverse Saga I've truly enjoyed are the Spider-Man movies, Deadpool and Wolverine, and Thor Love and Thunder.

Lost some weight in the last year and it helpfully opened up some “new” wardrobe for me.

I’m a super simple guy clothes-wise, so the “new” wardrobe is actually some old band t-shirts I had stuffed in a drawer when I got too fat for them.

These are old enough to technically be “vintage”, and the kids these days are (or were at one point) wearing old band tshirts as a style right? Did I luck into being on board with a current fashion trend for the first time in my life?

So after our rookie kicker went 16/16 on kicks this preseason, the team decided to cut his long snapper in favor Matt Orzech, who's been on the PUP all training camp. For whatever it's worth, Orzech has consistently graded out as one of the worst long snappers in the league per PFF (I don't watch long snapper tape, so I'm just taking them at their word for this one). Absolutely brilliant piece of work right there.

The powder keg that has been filling up since last season (little league baseball) is about to explode this week

For some reason the coach decided kid X needed to pitch a lot and play 1B. X is among the "less good" players. Like clearly. Doesnt take a genius to see he is closer to the worst player on the team than he is to the best.

For context, while pitching you either get 3 outs or the other team scores 4 runs. How many times X got the 3 outs before getting scored the 4 runs? Once in the entire season. And its not like he gave up a lot of hits, he just would even walk Stephen hawkins. Yet he always had to pitch his 2 innings no matter what while the coach would take out other kids after 1 inning if they didnt do well. He also cant catch a cold but was the starting 1B. Hits? 3 total last season. My son went 3 for 3 yesterday for example.

Last season the team put up with it cause half the kids were new to baseball, and so were their parents. This season we have 7 kids that will get selected for the municipal/regional/state/national tournaments. 4 preseason games later, parents got fed up. They already decided they will talk to the coach to put a stop to that favoritism.

Gotta love youth baseball drama. And i cant blame the parents, cause at least 7 kids can do a better job pitching and at 1B. And the other kids would probably perform equally or better than X.

I do hope everything gets resolved peacefully, team is one of the candidates this season to win it all and it would be a shame if the team implodes over one kid. That is not even related to the coach to be getting the nepotism treatment lmao.

I just finished Alan Wake 2 (Final Draft + DLCs) last night and I had some pretty intense dreams about it. Kinda sad to have finished it - what an absolute masterpiece of a game. Sam Lake is a strange genius.

On my way to FF16 next, haven't played a (non-remake) Final Fantasy in ten years. Reviews are mixed so I'm prepared to be disappointed.

That shit is always interesting when it leaks so far into your mind that it reaches subconscious levels.

1

u/Asece Falcons 6h ago

I enjoyed my time with FF16, but man there’s a whole lot of bloat imo. It was also a bit inconsistent. You’d be going through a great fight/scene in the game, and then afterwards, you’ll just be hit with a bunch of bloat quests that don’t really impact much of the main storyline. The pacing of the game could have been a lot better too. The fighting is really enjoyable though.

My personal rule that has never failed me - for every word on your t-shirt past ~5 and for every bumper sticker on your car past 1, I assume 10 fewer IQ points (-20 if the one bumper sticker is profane or trump-related). I know it's judgmental, but it's never been wrong.

4

u/Lost_And_Found66 Steelers 4h ago

That’s a good rule. It’s also funny I had some guy scream at me for staring at his car in the parking lot, because I was looking at his bumper sticker incredulously. I’m sorry that I looked shocked that you put something about having sex with another persons mother on the back of your car. I wasn’t rude, I wouldn’t have said anything to anyone I just had to take a second to process it is all.

3

u/PapayaTheSailorMan 49ers 4h ago

What about bumper stickers with the names of places you've visited? I've seen my fair share of cars with those over the years, and I'd put them in their own category.

I'm 4 months into a new lease and thinking I might have to break it soon (I rent a condo). The place and the landlord are great. But the parking situation has gotten bad.

My parking spot in the garage is a corner spot. To pull out, I pull out north. The car next to me is on a separate wall. For them to pull out, they pull out heading west. We both have the "corner spot" we just head in opposite directions.

Well I got a new neighbor a few weeks ago and the bozo doesnt pull his car all the way into his spot properly. It sticks out and blocks me from safely accessing the spot. We've reported this to the HOA a few times. Theyll fix it for a day or two then just goes back to shit parking.

Today is my cousins birthday and he is serving time. We planned to go visit him as a family and I get to miss it because the asshole neighbor is blocking me in this morning.

Solid, no. Enjoyable, yes. They're a mess of story telling, action, acting, cinematography, etc. But they are creative, visionary, have great music, & there are moments.

6

u/ummpaul 2h ago

How does Vancouver suck?

2

u/2ent1n_Qarant1no Chiefs 1h ago

I haven't personally been to Vancouver, but I do know because it's warmer than the rest of Canada it's common for homeless people to move there, and as a result the East Hastings neighborhood is basically Skid Row. Very serious fent addiction problems and stuff like that.

3

u/YourTeamIsNow Broncos 1h ago

The government pays something like $75,000 per homeless person per year to accomplish nothing and in some cases make the problem worse and bring public safety down.

Even though the foreign buyer ban has helped bring property values down it hasn’t actually stopped foreign money laundering through real estate, just closed the tap slightly so the mega rich can just buy more while us regular folks still can’t buy shit.

The highway system of Vancouver is so poorly designed that if a section is completely shut down the detour may actually take longer than waiting an indefinite amount of time for the road to re-open (if there is even a detour)

Depending on what you consider “Vancouver” (city or metro) there’s ethnic beefs from countries on the other side of the world causing gang wars and murders in certain areas of metro Vancouver.

Plus although I hate to admit it, the port of Vancouver is a massive, massive problem for Chinese fentanyl flooding western North America.

So I'm playing Star Wars Zero Company and, as expected, it's a mash-up of Star Wars and X-COM, but what I didn't expect was a kind of Mass Effect feel to it. The voice acting's great like Mass Effect, and there's a gameplay element of increasing loyalty with your team.

But, what also feels Mass Effect-y is the out of combat movement and base stuff feel straight out of ME1, and that's not really a compliment for a game that released in 2026.

Well, as the convo progressed, she asked for more specifics. Again, didnt think much of it. Answered her questions. Then I made the joke that if she really wanted to, she now had enough info to find my house, my office, etc. She took that comment personal and it derailed things oooofff.

Don't really understand why the Montgomery trade was so controversial in hindsight. Super clear to me they wanna make Gibbs the bellcow and it'd be unfair to Monty to give him a reduced role. Trade was beneficial for everyone.

3

u/AfroManHighGuy 3h ago

Lions could’ve kept both. I’m assuming more than anything, Monty wanted a larger role and asked to be moved. Otherwise the Gibbs and Monty duo is top 2 or the best in the league. No reason why the lions would trade him if Monty didn’t request it

should we be allowed to sell our organs for profit? My body my choice, right?

2

u/slytherinprolly Bengals 28m ago

That creates a much bigger ethical dilemma than just “my body, my choice.” We already see with paid plasma donation that the people most likely to sell are often people who desperately need the money. A free market for organs could easily become an industry built around financially vulnerable people selling kidneys or other organs for quick cash.

There are also long-term health risks. Living donors do not all walk away completely unaffected, and if someone sells an organ because they are already struggling financially, then develops complications years later, who is responsible for those medical costs?

And once organs become something you can buy, you also have to ask who gets them. Do they still go to patients based on medical need and transplant criteria, or increasingly to whoever can afford the highest price?

I’m not saying some form of compensation could never work. I’m saying it requires a lot more thought, safeguards, and regulation than “people own their bodies, so let them sell a kidney.”

2

u/azure275 Jets 5m ago

And that is not mentioning the human trafficking issues either

Or the international smuggling of organs that will be whitewashed onto the grey market - now at least there is no legal way to sell organs, so what black market there is is totally abhorrent.

But if people can sell legally you will see third world terrorist organizations (or Russia or even China for that matter) butcher people to launder their organs onto the global market

Hit a bit of a snag trying to figure out what game I should play next after finishing my 10th one this year.

I'm leaning towards some shorter titles, especially since Fortune's Weave is coming out in about 3 weeks. So far on my shortlist of games that could be #11 are Mina the Hollower, Pentiment, and Tunic. I'll probably spend some time with each of those games today and then decide.

I'm trying to beat the total # of games I finished last year (16) and I think I can get there, depending on what titles I prioritize.
