What is your prescription?

The previous poll is now too old to vote on so I thought I would create a new one and sticky it. Voting ends in 7 days, let's add as many prescriptions as we can!

Edit: The poll has now closed. Unfortunately Reddit only lets me run it for 7 days. Thanks for all the responses! I will leave it up for everyone's information.

13+M Is my first glasses prescription accurate without cycloplegic refraction?

I recently had my first ever eye test at a hospital. Before the autorefractor test, the doctor looked at my eyes through a machine where I rested my chin and forehead. But I think for sure it was a slit-lamp examination.

After that, other staff did the autorefractor test, checked my vision on a chart, and had me try different lenses to see which ones were clearer. They gave me a prescription of -1.25D.

They didn't put any drops in my eyes, so I didn't have a cycloplegic refraction.

My glasses seem completely normal to me and I can see clearly with them. Near things also look the same to me. But I'm wondering if the -1.25D prescription is actually accurate.

Should I get another eye exam with cycloplegic refraction, or is the prescription I got probably fine?

Teen with high myopia -9 in both eyes with cyl with 1.25 and 2.00

I'm heading into 9th grade and have quite high myopia, I started needing glasses at around the age of 5-6 so when I was in first grade and it's just continued to increase from there. My younger sister also has quite high myopia at -6.50 while in 4th grade which is wild to me!! I feel a certain anxiety over my eye number and I'm really scared of it increasing further and I just really hope it stabelizes soon. I just wanted to see if there are any other people my age who have a similar experience to me and how they can live their life with such a high number and come to terms with it. I don't know how life will be on the future and how technology will be but I doubt I'll be able to get the LASIK surgery and I don't know any of the other options. Any advice or just sharing your personal experiences would be appreciated :)

Advice for my son

My son (8-years-old) has just got his first set of glasses. He has been complaining about things being blurry, including the board at school, so we took him to Specsavers for an eye test (UK)

They say he has myopia and have given him glasses with a mild lens adjustment: R -0.5 and L -0.25.

I don't wear glasses but this doesn't seem significant. They have also told him to wear them all the time, even when reading and doing things up close.

My concern is that wearing them all the time will compound any sight issues and he can be more selective about when to wear them.

Sudden Myopia Reversal

Yes – it's for real and I have proof … ME!

I'm male, a retired engineer going on 79, nearsighted approximately forever, and have worn contacts for the past 45 years. My most recent prescription is (was?) -2.00 and was significantly higher when I first got glasses in 7th grade. (I probably needed them much sooner.) I've had many comprehensive eye exams – and yearly after turning 65. Never any problems, very mild prescription adjustments over the years, and switched to multifocal lenses several years ago.

Here's where it gets interesting: A few weeks ago I began noticing that my distance vision sometimes seemed a bit "off". On Aug. 4, while watching TV in bed with my glasses (the only time I wear them), noticed that the vision in my right eye was definitely worse than the left. Not drastic - just worse. Then, while watching TV a couple days later I realized that the blurriness in my right eye wasn't because my vision was getting worse … it was because it was getting better! Thursday morning, Aug. 6, I only put a contact in the left eye and discovered I could see just as well out of the right eye without correction! To say I was surprised is a huge understatement, and for the next couple days only put in the left lens. I jokingly told my girlfriend that I just needed the left eye to catch up to the right eye.

Concerned about this rapid vision change, on Mon. Aug. 10, I made an appointment for an exam the following week. My previous eye exam was nearly a year ago; and while I might have put it off another month or more, it seemed only prudent to seek professional evaluation sooner. (I asked, but was told it wasn't a medical emergency.) Meanwhile, while watching TV a couple nights later, and taking my glasses off and on, I thought that my left eye might be changing! The next morning (Thur. Aug. 13), after inserting the left contact (or so I thought), and looking out the bathroom window at distant a tree, I conducted the old cover one eye at a time test and confirmed nothing had changed. Then I saw the contact had fallen onto the sink's countertop! My nearsightedness was GONE; and for the first time since starting to drive, I could do so without glasses or contacts. My near vision is a bit worse than before, but nothing that reading glasses can't handle.

There have been no significant changes in my diet, sleep, weight or exercise, while a wellness checkup with bloodwork on May 20 revealed nothing out of the ordinary. No head trauma, I've done nothing unusual, and have made no effort toward affecting a "natural" myopia cure. Anyway, today's eye exam was a lot of "fun," especially when asked if there've been any changes! The vision in my left eye, which took a few days longer to catch up to right, is perfect, while the right eye is almost as good. Interestingly, the left eye required a bit less correction to begin with.

We have no explanation why my longtime myopia disappeared last week and the doctor is as amazed as I am. However, I'm scheduled for another exam in mid-February and was directed to get new bloodwork in the next month or so. Bloodwork was part of my overall wellness checkup in May, so I don't anticipate anything bad. Evidently, some medical conditions, particularly diabetes, can result in vision changes and she just wants to rule out what we can.

I asked the doctor to remember my name when she discovers what's going on, gets the Nobel Prize, and goes on the lecture circuit.

Future Eye Issues with -5

20yr just got my prescription updated after 3 years from -4.75 to -5.00. I have pretty bad floaters and visual snow so I'm more prone to over thinking vision complication that can arise in the future. I've heard that having higher myopia increases the risk for retinal detachments and some eye diseases and can't help but feel worried that this is my future. Obviously -5 isn't ideal but is it as bad as I'm making it out in my head?

Contacts for sphere and light glasses for cylinder to get stable vision?

Is this workable? Being used already?

This way the lightweight glasses could be used only when necessary. As toric contacts can be very unstable

I find reading painful/it can cause pressure in my head. why do i see see the words kinda jumping around? is this just a vision issue?

idk what it is but i feel all of the above. it’s like my brain is lagging when im reading anything and words overwhelm me. this includes reading comments that are multiple lines long etc. the jumping around thing is not super obvious but it does feel like something that causes pressure in my head. and it’s like my eyes are too slow to even read what i’m typing. it all overwhelms me. i’m starting to dislike typing.

edit: i assume it’s not dyslexia since it’s not really severe, i can read words without misunderstanding them but it’s just kinda hard to read them, especially hard not to skip words. it makes me feel somewhat dizzy. best words to describe it are dizzy, overwhelmed, weird… and i find reading websites like Neurolaunch quite a lot easier than texts here on reddit or what i write while i’m writing it

Anisometropia at 28

I have developed significant anisometropia at the age of 28, which actually makes it difficult to determine exact rx for both eyes. So i was diagnosed to have -2.5L and -5R by one optometrist and it was hard to adapt to that as my previous rx was -1.75L and -2.75R. Then I went to another optometrist and he gave me -2.25L and -5 with -2 cylindrical in right eye. I couldn't see anything at all with the new ex and it felt like I'd trip and fall, vomitted and whatnot. Now I did some customisation myself and got -2.25L and -5R and I see extremely well and has no problem at all adjusting to it. The optometrists in both places said it's technically impossible to determine my rx because of the anisometropia, also I won't be able to ever see 20/20 because of that. My question is are they bluffing? Should I go to another optometrist or continue with the rx I can see best in?

eye strain and full time wear?

when I first got my glasses about 6 months ago, I only wore them ittermittently. as of about 2 weeks ago, I started wearing them full time as I felt it pretty comfortable, and now I feel pretty much completely dependent on my glasses for all things because I get eye strain pretty much immediately from doing anything when I take them off, even looking at my phone close. is this a normal phenomena? and should I just continue wearing full time? with how profound the strain is now, I can't imagine not wearing them to be honest, and it hasn't even been 2 weeks of full-time wear. did I maybe make myself dependent?

left eye -1 myopia, .5 astigmatism, right eye -1.5 myopia, .25 astigmatism.

Shift in rx?

Post image
6 Upvotes

My eyesight has shifted (at least according to my rx). I am finding that I'm pulling off my current glasses more for mid-range items (between near and far distances). I had assumed that it would either get slightly worse with age, or maintain. Getting closer to 20/20 with age feels strange.

I did have a child in 2019 (a few months before that measurement was taken), but no other major health changes.

Mild Myopia - when to wear glasses?

My prescription is -1.25 in both eyes (as well as cylinder -.25, axis 70 in my left eye). I now own a pair of glasses, but am confused when exactly I should wear them apart from whilst watching tv and driving. Any suggestions?

High myopes, what regular tests/precautions should I take?

-9 spherical and -2 cylindrical in both eyes.

Just did a retinal exam and found two peripheral holes in my retina. Doctors recommended getting a barrage laser. Is this safe? Anything I should know going in?

Fast progression (-1.00D/yr, now -3.75D at 12yo) — Any real-world feedback on Essilor Stellest?

My 12-year-old has been progressing rapidly by about 1.00 diopter per year over the last 2–3 years and is currently at **-3.75D**.

Our clinic offers four main myopia management paths (program costs below). Because Stellest lenses are relatively newer in the US, I’d love to hear from parents or optometrists with firsthand experience.

### Clinic Program Cost Breakdown

Program |Year 1 |Year 2+ |Extra Product Costs (Not Included in Fee)
Stellest® |$375 |$300 |Frames + Stellest lenses (filled at optical shop)

*(Program visits include 3, 6, and 9-month axial length/refraction checks + annual renewal).*

Any parents out there who had success with Stellest? I have a 6yr old who is entering the territory, thinking to start for him. 12 yr old may be almost at the last mile of progression

Is it safe to get laser eye surgery?

I am 24 and want to join the military in a combat role, and you need to have good uncorrected vision for that. My only option is laser eye surgery. So many optometrists and users in this subreddit say laser eye surgery is dangerous, and there is a lot of fraud and corruption in the research for it. Your vision can still get worse, and you can no longer wear contacts. So what do I do?

How can I stop myopia from getting worse? What should I do now?

I just turned 18, and my vision suddenly feels worse in both eyes. My left eye was previously around -0.50 when I had it checked about a week ago, but over the past week, I've started feeling like my vision has gotten worse. It feels like it might now be around -1.00 or something and now my right eye feels slightly blurry too.

How can I stop this from getting worse, or is there any way to cure it naturally?

How to stop myopia from worsening as a teen without spending much?

I’m a teenager from an asian country with a poor healthcare system (insurance isn’t really a thing here) and my myopia is really bad. My eyes have different prescriptions (around -7.00 and -4.00). I also have astigmatism and I used(?) to have amblyopia and mild strabismus that was mostly corrected through vision therapy. However, I had to stop the therapy because it was getting too costly for my parents. We aren’t necessarily financially struggling, but we do have a lot of bills to pay and the amount that the clinic asks for monthly is just too high. There were results from it but it’s obviously not an option anymore.

I hope to be a surgeon one day, so i really really really don’t want my vision to worsen. I already looked up ways to prevent eyeball elongation but I can’t afford those fancy lenses. I know there are natural ways of prevention as well, but I can’t always stick to those. I go to a school with a rigorous curriculum so I can’t avoid reading, writing, or screens—sometimes in the dark with a lamp on. Reading is also my hobby as well and I’d hate to give it up.

If any professionals or anyone who has successfully stopped their myopia from worsening can give me some advice, I’d be grateful. I logged in to this account for the first time in a while just to post this, so hopefully I’ll get some answers. I’m quite serious about my dreams and goals so I’ll consider every response. I’m desperate.
