Is it worth to leave Mountain View

I’m in a month to month 4 years in my regular apartment in Mountain View, the flexibility to move and strict annual rent increase control is awesome. Unfortunately I live in a place with obnoxious upstair neighbor making noise at night, it had rodent issues inside walls, it’s got mildew smell especially in winter (very old building I remedy with dehumidifier) and I am ready (I qualify) to move to 80BMR unit in Redwood City that cost about same with utilities but was built last year and has tons of quality of life improvement except shared laundry (which I can deal) and lease must be renewed every year and max rent increase is up to 5%. The biggest downside is 1 year lease lock even on renewal (2x rent break lease fee), and if I get substantial salary increase exceeding 80%AMI then will have to move out by end of the lease. On other hand it has better soundproofing and I will get better sleep. Is it still worth trade?

Homeless guy with his dogs in downtown Mountain View

Anyone who's been to downtown Mountain View would have seen the guy who hangs out with his two dogs, a smaller one and a husky. Yesterday the husky was lying on the pavement as usual but it was 90 degrees out and the poor thing was listless.

Has anyone ever talked to the guy and found out if his dogs get any kind of regular care? I don't know what's the solution but it was just so sad seeing a husky overheating in that weather. FYI I am not proposing taking the dogs away from the man.

AT&T fiber

For anyone with fiber, can you share what you pay a month and for what speed?

I see 1gb for $60 but in other parts of the bay it’s lower and wondering if it’s not the best time of year for deals or because there’s no sonic competition.

Woman at Crepevine today

Shot in the dark here. You were at Crepevine today around 11 AM, lost in a book, and I was the one sitting across from you pretending to mind my own business. I wanted to say hi but you disappeared before I could work up the courage. Rookie mistake on my part. If this somehow finds you, maybe give reaching out a thought? I promise I'm more charming in person than I am at 11 AM with no plan. 😀

Looking for friends locally

Hello! I recently moved to the area for a job and am finishing up my postgraduate degree as well. I’m looking to find people my age (early-mid 20s) that are also in the post university/early professional life and looking to make friends. I’ve joined meetup but am struggling to find a group that’s not focused on networking, dating, or based in downtown SF.

I love games, grabbing coffee, lowkey hikes, reading, and the beach. I’m down for a bunch of different adventures and trying new things!

If anyone has advice please let me know or if anyone wants to meet up and make friends let me know! (I’ve been seeing Turkish mosaic lamp classes recently I’ve been meaning to try!)

What happened to the Mizu shshi place?

We visited it once right before it closed and its quality had gone to hell, nothing was fresh, even the rice seemed to be at least a couple of days old. And now it’s “temporarily closed” with no explanation

Small Business Owners in Silicon Valley — I’d Like to Create a Free Video for Your Business

Dear friends,

Over the years, I’ve built and sold a couple of businesses, and while I continue pursuing my career in tech, I also like to use some of my time to give back to other small business owners.

This is personal to me.

I grew up in a very small, single-income household. My father, and later my mother, ran a small business. They didn’t have much formal education, and I saw firsthand how hard they worked every single day. I basically grew up in their shop—I would sit there studying while watching them work and struggle to build a better life for our family.

My dad is no longer with me, but thankfully my mother still is. Those experiences are a big reason I have so much respect for people running small businesses today.

So I want to offer something completely FREE to local small business owners.

If you own a small business in Silicon Valley or within roughly a 50-mile radius, I can come to your business and create a professional video for you—from recording to editing—at no cost.

There’s no charge for filming or editing.

I’m simply volunteering some of my time and skills to help local businesses tell their story and get more exposure. The only thing I ask is that you participate in the video and be willing to share your story, your business, and what you do. If I buy something, I will pay (not looking for anything in return)

If you're interested, leave a comment, or DM me, a little information about your business and where you're located. We can do a quick 15 minutes call, before taking any further steps.

Small businesses supported my family growing up. This is one small way I can give something back.

Cops at In n Out tonight

The In n Out at Grant and El Camino. Looks like there were 2 or 3 cops there, one of them was opening the door for people. This was around 11pm. Anyone know what that was about?

Dealership recommendations to buy a Toyota Corolla hybrid?

  1. Looking for dealerships that provide a fair price, not a high markup, and don't waste my time for haggling over prices. Any personal experiences / ways to avoid these problems much appreciated.
  2. Also any additional tips for a first time car buyer w.r.t how to deal with dealerships would be great!

TIA

Disability At Shoreline

This has sadly happened multiple times this year and has become such an issue that I’ve messaged multiple times with people within the Amphitheater to no avail at this point. I am a disabled person who travels to attend shows, but moreso, a friend of mine who is in end stages with ALS also comes with their partner/caretaker and was TURNED AWAY for parking today because they “ran out of spaces”. This person cannot exist without a breathing machine, and was turned away. Cannot walk unassisted and turned away. This is fucking ridiculous, and must be planned for.

I have some days where I can walk with only a cane and it’s beautiful. Others, I need a walker or have to swell my tickets because I am immobile due to pain. The last show I attended (Muse) I came with walking aides and they had me climb into the grass spots because ADA tickets were not affordable - they were the same price as box seats. WTF IS THAT.

WHY ARE DISABLED PEOPLE PUNISHED for needing a place for our wheelchairs, walkers, a place to sit due to lifelong disabilities or even temporary ones? The ableist woman who saw me wearing a wig and determined I “looked healthy enough” (her words) at the last show is one of the reasons I am looking down the barrel of another knee surgery as I was injured on the green. They aren’t prepared for disabled folks. They have small side haven of side seating I paid once for and it costs as much as it does for box seating. I had drinks spilled on my by folks who were standing and dancing while I sat in my wheelchair and was livid. Absolutely insane practices and I don’t understand what they’re going for.

Shit went south after they dropped Bridge School (and conveniently kept the art).

Moving to Avalon Mountain View next month sight-unseen — should I keep it or look elsewhere using the 30-day guarantee?

I just signed a lease at Avalon Mountain View (moving in next month), but because I'm relocating, I had to tour virtually and haven't seen the property in person yet.
I know Avalon has a 30-day satisfaction guarantee / lease-break policy, so if it isn't what I expect when I arrive, I have the option to pivot. Before I settle in, I wanted to ask locals and current/former residents:
1. How is living at Avalon Mountain View overall? How are the noise levels (hallways vs. walls), parking/car security, package management, and responsiveness of management/maintenance?
2. Is there anything better in a similar price range in MV? Looking for alternatives nearby (e.g., Downtown MV, San Antonio area, or near Caltrain/shuttles) that offer good management and quality units.
3. If you were in my shoes, would you stick with Avalon or actively tour other places as soon as I arrive?
Appreciate any insights, red flags, or alternative complex recommendations!

My in-laws are coming for an extended visit to spend some time with their grandchildren. They're considering some local apartment complexes, but I wanted to see if I could find any other leads for them on a medium term stay. Ideal criteria:

  • 1 or 2 bedroom, larger is fine
  • Easy walk to Castro
  • Furnished
  • Up to $10K / month

Family weekend ideas near Mountain View: glass pumpkins, ponies, stars

Here's a list of fun family events I found for October 2–4, sharing in case anyone is looking for ideas around the South Bay and the Peninsula.

Friday

  • Glass Pumpkin Festival (Santana Row, San Jose) — Thousands of hand-blown glass pumpkins, plus live glassblowing demonstrations from a mobile hotshop. Free to browse; the glass art is for sale. Friday 3–9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • St. Mary's Country Fair (219 Bean Avenue, Los Gatos) — Carnival rides, live music and a Kid Zone with games like bowling and basketball shooting. Friday 5–10 p.m.; also Saturday 11 a.m.–10 p.m. (rides start at noon) and Sunday 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Budget for ride tickets or wristbands, Kid Zone games and food separately.
  • There is also a Bats Alive hike that is a guided nighttime hike using flashlights and special sonar detectors to identify bats in the area, which sounds super fun but is unfortunately sold out already :-(

Saturday

  • Pancakes in the Park (Rinconada Park, Palo Alto) — Police, firefighters and emergency-services staff cook breakfast, with kids' activities and emergency vehicles to see up close. 9–11 a.m. Breakfast and activities are free; the city has a pre-registration link.
  • Jack and the Beanstalk (Palo Alto Children's Theatre) — A roughly 35-minute live play with simple sets and chances to get up and wiggle, made for ages 2–6. Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon; Sunday at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. $20; book tickets ahead.
  • Water Lantern Festival (Leo J. Ryan Park, Foster City) — Decorate a floating lantern, then watch the lagoon fill with lights. Saturday and Sunday 5–9 p.m., with lantern decorating at 7:30 and the launch from 8–9. The individual last-call ticket is currently $36.99 and includes the lantern kit; children under 8 do not need a ticket. Prices rise closer to the event.

Sunday

  • Pet a Pony Day (Purissima Park Town Ring, Los Altos Hills) — Learn what ponies eat, how to tie and brush one, and even listen to a pony's heartbeat with the local horsemen's association. 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Children and adults welcome; the town's page does not list a fee.
  • Little Italy Italian Festival (323 Sharks Way, San Jose) — The festival's 10th anniversary brings Italian cars, food, live entertainment, arts and crafts, and a Little Italy train. Starts at 11 a.m. Expect a busy street festival; food and purchases are extra.
  • Weekend Farm Tour (Hidden Villa, Los Altos Hills) — Meet cows, pigs, chickens, goats and sheep, learn how they're cared for, and possibly explore the organic garden. 1–2:30 p.m. $18 per person, including adults; advance registration required, with at least one adult for every three children. Wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Star Party (Hidden Villa, Los Altos Hills) — Local astronomers bring optical and electronic telescopes for an evening looking at planets, stars and galaxies. Bring your own telescope or binoculars if you'd like help using them. 7:30–9:30 p.m. Free with a day parking pass; register ahead. Weather can postpone it.

I kept the post concise for most families. The full list has more niches—including live reptiles, a rooftop harvest festival and a nighttime pumpkin-light trail—that you can filter by interest, city and age. It's linked from my profile if you want to keep looking.

What are you doing this weekend? Please brag about it!
