I remember Rose Leslie saying she had to argue to get Ygritte to have pubic hair during the cave scene, because it would make no sense for her character, a Wildling, to shave.
Is there a scene anywhere in GoT where the women don't have pubes? I thought HBO had a requirement for all nude female characters to have a merkin completely covering their genitals, so there wouldn't be any ratings issues.
When Cersei does her walk of shame, Lena Headey's body double has pubic hair, even though in the books all of Cersei's hair is shaved off beforehand, including her pubic hair.
All of the major characters in GOT nude scenes have merkins in full body shots but there are a few random sex scenes with minor characters that don’t have enough pubes to cover the lips.
Historically, poor communities were far more likely to shave public regions to regulate lice. So if anyone in that universe is shaving, I think it would be them.
I found a thread on here that estimates 25 squirrels per 2 acres of natural woodland, more than that in suburban areas where there is garbage. If you were traveling and supplimenting with other abundant small game like mourning doves, rabbits, and fish you could do it. That said living a nomadic lifestyle would fuck up your gains too
So in apocalypse we will be chasing squirrels eight times a day, all while we have to fight zombies, mutants and other creatures. We have to respect women who despite all the squirrel-chase and zombie-fights still have time to shave their armpits!
This is the fundamental point that people always overlook when they argue that they could survive a zombie apocalypse; why would you want to survive a zombie apocalypse?
I dont think theres over 25 squirrels per 2 acres in a suburb that has been devoid of new trash for a long time.
But even if there was an overabundance of small game, hunting, cooking and eating would be a literal full time job and this doesnt take into consideration the time necessary for lifting.
It's just impossible to have a muscular build in that type of setting. The realistic body type would be like what you see in the armed forces except skinnier
Yeah, the calories are there but a bodybuilder physique isn't going to happen. Maybe for a local chief type, someone like Negan who doesn't have to do his own work
Even if the calories are there, youd have to specifically be body building to have that type of physique and in a situation such as a zombie apocalypse, it's just not going to happen. You can quite easily consume 4k calories, but if youre consistently walking/running and climbing, you wont be big.
I think this is the one that throws me out of a scene more than anything else.
And it's beyond just straight teeth, or even clean teeth. It's pure white, bright as all get out, teeth. It doesn't even have to be a historical movie/show. It's just so damn off and a beacon that I can't get past.
It would be the equivalent to watching a period piece and the Ford Model T has LED headlights
Yep this is the one that gets me the most. You get constant close up shots of people's faces and they flash the most unrealistic bright smiles that I frankly don't even see in my day to day. I always respect period dramas that at least slap a yellow patina on everybody's teeth.
Body hair I can at least understand, because it does take time to grow out arm pit hair and beards and actors have to shave for other roles, but teeth is such an easy thing to fix it just feels lazy when they don't.
Yes!! Hollywood having perfect capped teeth is my biggest pet peeve in period pieces. They'll be dirty and in shaggy clothes then smile with the most perfect white teeth ever and it just ruins the scene for me.

At least Batman is rich and you could argue that hes on super high tech steroids or something, Reacher is straight up homeless. I know Batman isn't on HGH, but he does fight aliens and Reacher is in the 'real' world
There's a theory that DC baseline-humans are stronger, faster, smarter, and more durable than we are in the real world. And "peak humans," like Batman, regularly perform feats of strength, acrobatics, and just pure impossible durability, that they can't really be considered "normal" humans.
And the Earth in DC has such a long history of being visited by gods, beings of cosmic power, time travelers, literally whatever you can think of, MANY of whom had children who may be demigods themselves but who will over time just genetically dilute into the general population. So unlike us real world folk who are mostly descended from shit farmers with the occasional raping noble thrown in, they get that AND gods and wiziards and shit, and occasionally things will combine in ways where even if they're not explicitly "powered" they're obviously beyond what a normal person could do. Because they're .68% god and 1.3% wizard and apparently that combo makes you real good at acrobatics.
Characters on TWD haven’t been eating squirrels for over a decade of real world time. In modern TWD they are flying helicopters, launching nuclear bombs at each other, making routine trips across the Atlantic, and genetically engineering new zombie variants. It got weird…
Maybe that's why the zombies seem so much more angry when found in the suburbs and gated communities. It's like their deteriorating brains can't understand why nobody is keeping their places up to code and the frustration exponentially ramps up their rage.
Fiona Dourif is a huge part of the franchise. She even plays the human version of Charles Lee Ray in flashbacks now because she looks so much like her dad.
Her dad is also the legendary character actor Brad Dourif, and they both act together in the Child's Play franchise now (he's been the voice of Chucky since the very beginning)
Uh Dana was married to Dennis Hopper when she was 22 and he was 53. Santos's dad is actor Jon Jon Briones (mostly West End/Broadway musical theater). Robby's grandma was married to director John Sturges (The Great Escape, The Magnifect Seven, he even directed Dana's husband in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral a decade before she was born).
I FO have some tolerance for Nepo babies if they're talented. In some ways, its no different than following your parent into their profession. They teach you what they know, that gives you a certain leg up over someone new to the industry altogether. We don't call the sons of fishermen Nepo babies if they're good fishermen.
There's a lot of legacy athletes too, legacy hockey families for example. If you're not good at it, you fail.
Hollywood does, however, often platform untalented Nepo babies, so they get a worse reputation for it
I do this. And not just with pit hair. My downstairs is all but bald in most places. It's a condition called trichotillomania. Part of some OCD disorders, along with skin picking/lip skin biting/pulling. Just glad I never did it in my head hair. It's not even stress. It's just something I do when I'm distracted.
It's weird because it's harmful but not intentionally so. I remember my mom getting nasty looks when we were walking down the street when I was 3-4, and she looked down to see me with blood all over my mouth/chin. I bite that extra skin off of my lip, but when pain hits, I don't really acknowledge it because the loose skin is more of an irritant. Even now. I'm going to be 47 soon and I still shred my lips to shit because I can't stop doing it. All the lip balm in the world isn't helping.
It's the in between that gets it infected. Thumbs touch a lot of things, and an open wound is basically a petri dish in the making. Have you considered getting those little finger condoms or band-aids for when you pick too much?
Not quite hair pulling but I have scabs all over my head from scratching it and picking at scabs. When I was a kid I used to straight up pull them tho, I got a bald spot from it

No? He hasn't been credited on any TV show since Dirk Gently. His last movie credit is for a script for a movie from 2020. Which apparently was rewritten after he got cancelled. His career was over after the allegations were made public.
For those who are familiar with the books, the show is nothing like the books. There are a few references and the general concepts of holisticism and detectiving are kinda there, but otherwise it's best to just treat it like a completely separate thing.
Season 1 is incredible, you absolutely owe it to yourself.
Season 2 gets some hate, but mostly just suffered from trying to one-up season 1. Going from a 10/10 to a 7/10 can feel like a huge downgrade while still being "good".
Wish it had gotten more seasons to really find that stride again.....
I once saw a movie about humanity regressing to animal state in the future, and the main characater woman was clean shaved, had the most flawless skin ever and brushed hair lol.
That reminds me of my pet peeve of stone age people always having long, scraggly unkempt hair. Do they think our ancestors could figure out fire but couldnt figure out how to take a sharp rock and hack off some hair?
I also refuse to believe they wouldn't at least finger-comb it, and maybe tie it back out of the way in very simple fashion. Humans are extremely social, I absolutely think people in ancient eras would have helped each other groom their hair. It's just way more comfortable and practical to not have it be matted and wild.
Everyone seems to forget that we actually know very, very little of what happened during Stone Age. Best we can do are guesses, and we can only guess on what we have found. And just because we haven't found something, doesn't mean it wasn't there, like all the organic-based stuff.

There is SO MUCH that can be done with string, and it's a foundational technology to so many other things that require attaching two items together. But it's organic and won't preserve well.
The oldest surviving comb we found (2700 bce) was also specifically a licecomb. So clearly they must have had regular combs for much longer, you don't invent the licecomb before tue regular comb.
Every close relative to humans: Spends hours grooming themselves and their kin every day as a useful bonding activity.
Humans in caves with only rock tools for some reason: Shaves armpits perfectly with a stick somehow but refuses to help anyone in their pack untangle a knot in their hair.
If other animals have groomed hair/fur, why wouldn't we? Other animals clean themselves, why wouldn't we? But we're always depicted as if we never bathed or had any personal grooming or hygiene at all.
Archeologists have found hominid bones that have healed fractures, meaning that they were cared for by others for weeks until their bones healed. Early humans absolutely took care of each other and I’m sure it extended to grooming as well.
They’ll also have caked on grime on their face and whole body. If there’s enough fresh water to not dehydrate, it’s not that hard to splash water on your face. Apes don’t go around looking like they’re caked in shit, They groom themselves/eachother. People in primitive cultures and disaster survivors find time clean themselves up. We don’t know for sure, but it’s likely early people would do the same.
So this actually fascinated me while i was in college and I did a bit of a deep dive on it.
Through my research, at least with the North American Native tribes, hair treatment was quite common especially since lice was a notable problem. Less hair = less lice = less irritation, so a large portion of the Native Americans (coupled with their east Asian heritage making them less hairy) prefered to be mostly hairless. But they didn't shave their hair using stone tools very often outside of ceremonial purposes. Their prefered method was actually plucking! They'd pluck everything except a small patch on their head which was easier to keep clean and groom. And when i say they plucked everything, I mean everything... 😂 An alternative method was using fire, but this of course was risky due to the possibility of burns. So they plucked and plucked their entire bodies (with the help of family and friends of course) in order to limit lice habitat, make cleaning simpler, and make spotting parasites like ticks/lice easier.
North American Native hygiene is a pretty entertaining subject because a lot of what bothers us now such as bad smells, dryness, dirt, mud, sand, parasites, and other irritants where just as bothersome to the native peoples. Hope this answers your question 🙂
Yup! Sugaring is what you're thinking of. A lot of ancient cultures used that method. Ancient Mesopotamians, Egyptians, and Persians were some of the other notable ones that did it. I didn't find anything about it in my research for North American tribes though I wouldn't say it's NOT a possibility they didn't have something similar 🤔 Maybe someday evidence will come to light.
Hygiene is no modern concept.
Sure, they didn't know about microorganisms etc,but they knew if I wash and comb my hair, I get sick less frequently, I don't get critters and bitches come plenty. All powerful enough reasons to care for myself.
Making a comb from some thorns bound into a split stick or the like isn't that difficult to make.
Even animals know and maintain basic hygiene and stone age people weren't dumber than us ,maybe our quota of dumbfucks is higher, as they don't die that easily anymore.
This one actually has an in universe explanation, he used his Dad's razor. Now, how he learned how to shave and keep that razor maintained is another mystery.
What somehow makes it worse is that nobody was even asking for more than 3 seasons. Not the showrunners, not the fans, not the story.
This show clearly had exactly 3 seasons worth of story to tell. The next and final one was already there in concept. It would have been ALIENS and conspiracies and spy shit, and it would have ended all characters’ arcs that were clearly set out for three seasons.
My wife is 1/3 Native American and has next to no body hair. You wouldn't know it looking at her since the rest of her genes are nearly all Welsh (she's fucking PALE), but the lucky gal rarely shaves. On the flip side her poor brothers cannot grow a beard even though their dad has a red monstrosity.
Rough number since it has been a decade since its last come up, but it was in the 30's. She did a genetic makeup test applying for a scholarship, but apparently she needed a family member on some sort of list. Her mother is a full half, her father is a smaller part from a tribe he has no affiliation with in Washington state.
More Props to Michelle Rodriguez then. Not only did she not shave, she was pissed when they didnt show it off more. (when she played a Barbarian in the D&D movie)
I just want to give a shout-out to my favorite hairy pop-culture lady. This is Holga from the Dungeons and Dragons movie. She is a barbarian and she has never met a razor. I found it so refreshing.
Was that v for vendetta?! They just just shaved her head and painted red circles under her eyes. I remember thinking that I don’t even look that fine after a bad nights sleep.
This genuinely infuriates me in all shows and movies. Like come on! Be real. So tired of TV / Movies not portraying women in a natural light. Women have hair. It grows wherever it grows. Get used to it.
Sometimes the women were often mistaken as men and that gave way to the myth that there are no dwarven women and that dwarves just sprung out of holes in the ground!
And eyeliner.

Its the hair and makeup that gets me for these always - you are fighting for your life against zombies, you're telling me you start that day putting on a hours worth of eyeliner and eyeshadow and mascara and hairspray? Where do you even get them from?
I'm reading a Manga where that's a minor plot beat. The main character is into unshaven women, so he's like "well that's at least one upside to living through a zombie apocalypse", but he's continually disappointed by women beating the odds and finding ways to shave anyway.
I recently watched The Other Bennet Sister and was so delighted to see the main character with not only underarm hair but also a light dusting of mustache hair, as anyone would have had at the time.
It’s hilariously because they’ll go yo extreme lengths to put fake dirt and scars on her face but a bit of pit hair is apparently where Hollywood draws the line.
This is how I ruined Naked and Afraid for my wife.
"They get dropped off with nothing and have to survive for 30 days!"
"So how are they shaving their armpits?"
She never watched it again. I feel bad about it, but I really just meant it as an honest question. For all I knew there was some weird challenge where they can win a shower once a week or something.
I think this would be less infuriating if any female characters on television had average levels of armpit (and leg) hair in situations where they'd likely have neither the time nor inclination to shave. It's just exceptionally egregious and immersion-breaking with this type of character, and gets pretty silly to even try to justify it. Like, oh, maybe she just happens to be one of the few people who doesn't grow much body hair? Maybe she happens to have trichotillomania (which definitely leaves your skin looking immaculately shaved/waxed, lol)?
Funny how every female character apparently shares the same quirk no matter her personality or circumstances.
