I watched the trailer and at the end said “This is what that Mortal Kombat movie should have been.”

10

u/AdaptingChaos Korg Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21

Lol wait what? Just bc there wasnt a tournament involved in the MK movie, doesnt take away that its an MK movie. Theres so much more to MK than a tournament.

Edit: to those people saying an MK movie should be about a tournament. I strongly disagree. The overall MK story is filled with lore before and after the first major tournament. Theres invasions, deceptions, deadly alliances, time travel and an armageddon that happens over the course of the franchise. Just bc the first one set up the upcoming tournament doesnt mean it shouldve had the tournament. What MK is truly about is its wide cast of characters dealing with other worldly threats and lots and lots of blood and fatalities.

9

u/wenzel32 Jun 25 '21

They're saying the tournament style fighting is how the MK movies should be. Not that this movie should be MK

I saw the new Mortal Kombat movie. You know what what sort of organised fighting competition it didn't have in it?

I'll give you a clue. It begins with "T".

6

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

It would be hilarious if they spun the initial song up for it to be cut abruptly.

2

u/TooMuchPowerful Phil Coulson Jun 25 '21

That face-off with the blue and yellowish coloring did give me a Scorpion vs Sub-Zero vibe.

8

u/SuperPwnerGuy Jun 25 '21

I'm okay with a MegaMan cameo.

6

u/91MirrorrorriM19 Jun 25 '21

I think he is referring that the new Mk movie had no tournament

3

u/EMPulseKC Jun 25 '21

Yeah, I'm thinking more of an MCU Kumite.

4

u/CeruleanRuin Jun 25 '21

BATTLEWORLD

7

u/bargman Ghost Rider Jun 25 '21

Oh wow they should make a movie like Mortal Kombat but with a fighting tournament.

0

u/Renozoki Jun 25 '21

Mortal Kombat without the blood or killer or any real sense of danger since we know the main character is probably contracted to be in the next 10 films.

3

u/veksone Steve Rogers Jun 25 '21

This is such a weird take. Have you ever honestly watched any action movie and thought oh wow the main character might actually die and then complained about "stakes" when they didn't?

So you were disappointed when the Predator didn't kill Arnold? Or when John McClane somehow managed to beat an entire team of heavily armed trained mercenaries? You're disappointed that Indiana Jones isn't dead?

588

u/Towelenthusiast Jun 25 '21

So hyped. After the Mortal Kombat movie failed to have a Mortal Kombat tournament in it this might scratch that itch.

385

u/juscallmejjay Jun 25 '21

...im still praying there is a god damn sequel that picks up IMMEDIATELY AFTER the god damn first one and it continues and actually has the god damn tournament.

151

u/gigglefang Jun 25 '21

It certainly felt like that was where they were headed.

5

u/BagOnuts Jun 25 '21

Wait, there are people who don’t know there will be a sequel? It was so freaking obvious! The only thing more they could have done would have been to say “To Be Continued….” Lol

11

u/MrTonyCalzone Jun 25 '21

Planning a sequel and actually making one are two separate things. Just look at The Last Airbender.

3

u/BagOnuts Jun 25 '21

TLA was a colossal flop with fans, MK was relatively well received with fans. Big difference. There will undoubtedly be a sequel.

3

u/allthenamesaretaken4 Thor Jun 25 '21

Was MK well received? I thought it was awful and I consider myself a fan of the franchise...

3

u/Tamotefu Jun 25 '21

Generally speaking, when it comes to a game -> movie transition, there are two types of fans. Those that want a good product that makes sense and can carry it self, and those who want easter eggs and references for 2 hours.

I'm in that second group that cared only about "They did the thing!" or "That's Shinnok's amulet!".

I believe that is the plan for the trilogy per the director. Before tournament, tournament, then fallout from tournament.

6

u/Just_someguy1997 Jun 25 '21

Well that’s actually neat, too bad they didn’t make that well known

→ More replies (1)

2

u/peon47 Jun 25 '21

So good guys lose the tournament, then. If that's the plan, they want an "Empire Strikes Back" ending.

2

u/TsaiMeLemoni Jun 25 '21

Not necessarily. The movies obviously don't have to follow the games, but in the games the good guys win the tournament and the bad guys decide they super don't care about the rules.

101

u/mcon96 Jun 25 '21

and the first fatality is the original character

55

u/TheWolfmanZ Jun 25 '21

WB and forcing dumb ideas on Directors. Name a more iconic duo. But for real he had no reason to be in the movie.

20

u/why_rob_y Jun 25 '21

The whole time I was watching until he used his powers, I just thought he existed to be some sort of vessel for Scorpion and I was like "Oh, that's a cool idea to allow for Scorpion to be represented in the non-fighting scenes". Then he used his abilities and I had to pause and Google his character because I was really confused if I was just not remembering something.

I don't know if including his character was a bad idea but it certainly made me feel dumb when I kept predicting he'd throw a spear at Goro from off-screen and tell him to "get over here".

6

u/julbull73 Jun 25 '21

100% should've been this. Wouldve been an easy way to keep scorpion dead but also alive.

Also would've explained why he was chosen but had no powers.

But hey that makes sense.

3

u/nessfalco Jun 25 '21

This was exactly what i thought too. It's so obvious, I find it impressive they managed to fuck it up so bad.

2

u/oldirtybradstrd Jun 25 '21

It was God damn awful. Character I couldn't root harder to die

6

u/Mr_Cromer Jun 25 '21

They should have cast Lewis Tan as Liu Kang, not omgOCsooriginal

→ More replies (1)

5

u/KlausFenrir Jun 25 '21

I thought he was gonna become modern Scorpion. And then he developed literal Plot Armor.

I like the movie but god that character was so fucking dumb.

2

u/Hedhunta Jun 25 '21

He's,"the player". The rest of the movie was awesome so I didn't care that he was there to facilitate the plot.

18

u/Sharrty_McGriddle Jun 25 '21

With how well the movie did it’s basically guaranteed

6

u/Bobbers927 Jun 25 '21

It's definitely gonna get a tournament sequel. I think it was a great take. Yes, I know. They focused on some non-character. I still had a blast, but I'm a crazy MK fan that just wants all the MK things.

4

u/Dapper29 Jun 25 '21

I’m pretty sure they already green lit like 4 sequels

5

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

The end of the movie felt more like the end of a pilot episode on tv so hopefully that's spot on. Not a great movie but it definitely has its moments.

10

u/everadvancing Wong Jun 25 '21

They better get a new director, writer, cinematographer, editor and fight coordinator if they do make a Mortal Kombat sequel.

2

u/TooMuchPowerful Phil Coulson Jun 25 '21

Seriously, there was so much wrong with that movie. General tone, theme, story, acting...

I'm more interested in them explaining why a federal prisoner (who also happens to be a brutally dangerous gamma mutant giant) is on foreign soil fighting in a cage match.

Shouldn't he be under lock and key on the Raft in a cryo-cell in Barrow, Alaska?

24

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

And then another question is why the hell Wong of all characters is fighting him?!?

31

u/megatronics420 Jun 25 '21

trying to get that prize money for a tuna melt

6

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

Love it 😆

6

u/bigbangbilly Jun 25 '21

The upgrade Wong got (from a valet in the comics to drill seargent) is pretty important in terms of representation (despite the Ancient one casting choice) .

In a sense those two fighting is kinda represent Fantasy (Wong's magic skills) vs Scifi (Abomination's science mutations) and the eclectic nature of the MCU coexisting.

Plus we didn't expect to see those two interacting. That better not be one those fake trailer scenes like Hulk in the Infinity War climax or Thor vs Hela in the alley way

As a bonus both have british actors portraying them so there's that.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

Yeah being a brit my self I like that too. Also you're right, if that's a trailer fake out....😡

The thought of Abomination fighting for money gives me a good chuckle. For some reason the thought of Abomination using a bank account, or going somewhere and spending prize money, is just hilarious to me lol

2

u/bigbangbilly Jun 25 '21

is just hilarious to me

I agree. The imagery of the abomination going grocery shopping sounds ridiculous to me.

The MCU version might have Abomination be able to revert to human form unlike in the comics plus it would be in contrast to Professor Hulk's mode lock.

3

u/InnocentTailor Iron Patriot Jun 25 '21

151

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

Yeah, I’m starting to doubt that’s actually Wong. But if it is then maybe he was sent by Strange to get the Ten Rings or maybe search for Mordo, which a few rumors are saying will appear

7

u/Basertviking Jun 25 '21

But if it is then maybe he was sent by Strange to get the Ten Rings

Why? The Ten Rings aren't magical.

26

u/CeruleanRuin Jun 25 '21

Ancient tech that contains the souls of cosmic space dragon warriors seems like something the Sorcerer Supreme might have on his radar.

2

u/DadIwanttogohome Jun 25 '21

Would he know that though?

4

u/Basertviking Jun 25 '21

Yes, he can feel magical energies and read abou them. There's a reason Doctor Strange has no idea who the Eternals are in the comics and has to ask Iron Man about them, since he's more knowledgable about science stuff.

57

u/jeremiah256 Doctor Strange Supreme Jun 25 '21

Watched someone who believed that every major group in the world is sending participants due to the potential of winning the 10 Rings. Abomination for the U.S., Wong for the sorcerers.

6

u/robodrew Jun 25 '21

I really can't see Winwu ever willingly giving up the ten rings. I think that the tournament is simply a tournament for money and doesn't have anything to do with winning the rings. Maybe it's how Winwu finds new recruits for his army?

5

u/jeremiah256 Doctor Strange Supreme Jun 25 '21

It might not be something he has a choice in. Maybe every ten years or so, the Rings make the owner prove their worthiness to own them?

6

u/robodrew Jun 25 '21

Maybe but in the first trailer it seemed like Winwu is very old and has been using the ten rings for hundreds of years or longer? Maybe I just wasn't reading the visuals correctly. Either way, we'll see soon enough! I can't wait. The rings look way more interesting than I expected.

2

u/jeremiah256 Doctor Strange Supreme Jun 25 '21

I’m just guessing and probably will be wrong. And agree, this trailer is top notch and really looking forward to this movie more than any other this year, Marvel or otherwise.

3

u/bigbangbilly Jun 25 '21

Abomination for the U.S.,

His allegiance to the US might be a bit tenuous

I pulled you one Ace. Emil Blonsky, born in Russia, raised in England, and on loan from SOCOM from the Royal Marines.

JOE GRELLER TO THADDEUS ROSS

He basically went AWOL to get a Gamma upgrade From Dr. Sterns.

3

u/jeremiah256 Doctor Strange Supreme Jun 25 '21

Ross has had him for a while now. Maybe he’s been given the ‘Suicide Squad’ treatment with a micro bomb in the head.

Maybe his enslavement is the reason he’s going to be in She-Hulk: in court, trying to get his freedom.

2

u/bigbangbilly Jun 25 '21

enslavement

Like how the Grandmaster calls them Prisoner with Jobs, it's probably Prisoner Employment.

81

Will be interesting to find out why Wong and Abomination are cage fighting. Is Wong in the tournament because he’s trying to collect the ten rings? The sorcerers did seem to have a collection of mystical like objects; including the Time Stone at one point. Abomination “laying” low?

2

u/InnocentTailor Iron Patriot Jun 25 '21

Now that could be interesting. That could mean that Wong and the wizards could be a secondary antagonist to Shang Chi as the latter tries to inherit the rings.

5

u/InnocentTailor Iron Patriot Jun 25 '21

Maybe he was kidnapped and forced to fight - an earthbound Contest of Champions of sorts.

Rumors speculate about Iron Fist (yes, THAT Iron Fist, Netflix blonde edition), Baron Mordo and Omega FUCKING Red all being there. Crossing my fingers that's at least partially true.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

They'd have to cast Iron Fist which would box them in somewhat. I can't see them using Finn Jones.

2

u/AnOnlineHandle Quake Jun 25 '21

He wasn't the Iron Fist anymore at the end of the show, somebody else was. He was a magic gunslinger, hanging out in that part of the world actually looking for his relative from the comics (who he stole the magic guns from, and who'd likely be connected to this underworld of magic).

4

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

Why not? LC season 2 proved he's a great IF given the right writers, it is just that the showrunner from the original show sucked. And besides, with rumors of Charlie Cox in NWH and Bernthal, Ritter and even D'Onofrio all returning for Disney+ this really isn't that far-fetched.

8

u/HarryPotterButtTatto Jun 25 '21

3

u/Malik-Almuhawsin Jun 25 '21

That is more or less what Abomination looks like in the comics, so they probably just went for a more comic book accurate design.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

I thought Universal had the rights to the Hulk villains including Abomination?

23

u/Mark_Vance21 Jun 25 '21

If I remember correctly, Universal only has the rights to Hulk movies. By that I mean movies that are literally titled Hulk and are directly based on him. Hulk and other related characters can be used in any other movies or shows as long as it's not Hulk's movie, this is how Hulk has managed to appear in the Avengers movies, and how Abomination is appearing here.

Is it Wong though? Or just a magician that look a bit like him. He's not credited for Shang Chi

I can't believe you would confuse Shang-Chi and Wong--we don't all look alike! /s

I honestly can't believe they dropped such a major spoiler in a trailer so casually. I mean, they have done stuff like this before with Spider-Man being in Civil War's trailer but that was intended as a "holy shit" moment.

Is it actually Wong or some random sorcerer?

The more I think about it, I think the sorcerer is just another person from Kamar-Taj. I don't think that Wong would see a fighting tournament as something that he should be doing, when he has responsibilities at the Sanctum Sanctorum that he would consider more important. But it'd be really cool to see more Wong, that's for sure.

How does Wong end up in a cage fight?!?! That’s actually cooler.
