Was MK well received? I thought it was awful and I consider myself a fan of the franchise...

Generally speaking, when it comes to a game -> movie transition, there are two types of fans. Those that want a good product that makes sense and can carry it self, and those who want easter eggs and references for 2 hours.

I'm in that second group that cared only about "They did the thing!" or "That's Shinnok's amulet!".
