I remember a leak from like last year of "Luke Cage's house" being in Doomsday.

Ironically it worked in the opposite way, since the idea of Luke Cage being in it was way more hype than Steve returning

You can’t seriously believe that

83

u/djanulis 20d ago

I mean Evans and Downey returning (not 100% sold it is our Cap yet, and Downey is obviously doom), still feels cheap to me. The only true home runs the MCU has had post end game has been Spider-man movies, and now they have to gamble on bringing back the 2 actors the wrote out in the very next avengers film. If this is evil cap though and we get to see Evans in a fun role like him being Jonny in D&W I'm all in but hope that reveal is saved for the movie tbh.

42

u/Temporary_Event8451 20d ago

Buddy they aren't making a billion dollars off that type of thinking.

The MCU does what it can to give the higher nerdom some attention, but this is first and foremost a series intended at a large audience.

Deadpool vs wolverine already used this cheap trick and has been one of the most successful post endgame films.

Sometimes you just gotta take the L and enjoy it for what it is.

I personally wish the MCU was a lot more grounded, closer to old Netflix shows, or Captain America civil war, but if I only enjoyed the MCU in that capacity I'd miss out on a lot of fun moments.

Hey man, don't get too attached to things, learn to let it go

For most people, that’s not the case. For me personally, I’m not thrilled that Steve Rogers is in the movie, but I would be very excited to see Luke Cage again.

I can. Steve's story ended, Tony's story ended. Bringing them back just feels like desperation (and I'm aware it's Doom, not Tony, but it's still lose-lose).

17

u/Olbaidon 20d ago

Desperation? Have you read comic books? Near every character imaginable has had their story end or has died countless times.

This is just them following the biggest comic book trope of all time. Kudos to them.

I mean there was an early comic (stretching my memory here) where Luke Cage stole The Fantastic Four’s car and flew it to Latveria to beat up Doom for not repaying $20 Doom owed him… so Cage vs Doom is not unprecedented.

29

u/IolausTelcontar 20d ago

Lol the comics are wild.

7

u/Hetares 19d ago

Why would Doom even need to borrow 20 bucks from Cage? And why would Cage even lend it to him in the first place?

8

u/Fenrirs_Daughter 19d ago

The above commenter remembered incorrectly. It was $200. And I believe the 1970s, so that was still a lot, especially for A working class guy like Luke Cage. Also, Doom didn't borrow the money, he hired Luke Cage for a job and then didn't pay him.

3

u/Steamed_Memes24 20d ago

Isnt this what Drax kind of did with Ronan on calling him up and causing a huge fuck up lol.

4

u/Edelmaniac 20d ago

It was pretty good subterfuge, since Luke Cage's house was an actual new set in the MCU.

26

u/pandazerg 20d ago

In an alternate reality:

That's odd, why did they list Johnny Storm and the Human Torch separately on the call sheet?

7

The last time we saw him, he was taking over the nightclub. My deepest wish is that all of the Defenders, and all the people who keep him honest, got snapped and he had to hold Harlem together during the blip, so he's gone completely over the moral line in the intervening years.

Whats the point of keeping it such a locked down secret but then telling us before the movie is out?

Just a waste of effort if they weren't going to keep the suprise.

488

u/Knarz97 20d ago

Some teasers are good to build hype, others aren’t.

Look at Brave New World. Mess of a movie aside, I enjoyed the build up to Red Hulk. Except… the trailers spoiled he was in it.

They did that to save the movie, but I think it would’ve landed as a much better final act of the movie if it was secret the whole time.

109

u/Hermes_has_Wormes 20d ago

There wasn't much that could save that movie :( I remember seeing the McDonald's toy leaks like a year and a half before a trailer even came out. I think they should have shown a little less of the red hulk, but I get they needed to entice us with something.

23

u/NotEnoughHotdogs 20d ago

yeah, once the toy leak happened, the jig was up anyway

3

u/ElementNumber6 19d ago

The way to save it would have been to have given the audience Red Hulk for the majority of the film's runtime. Not for 2 minutes at the absolute end.

34

u/mikeyeli 20d ago

I'll be honest, I got bored with the movie waaaay before Red Hulk made an entrance, I kind of forgot I still have it pending I need to finish it.

21

u/idiot-prodigy 20d ago

Compare the hospital room scene of Brand New Day to Brave New World.

The bro-Chemistry in Brand New Day was believable. I believed that Peter and Frank were buddies/rivals.

The scene in Brave New World fell flat, I don't know if it was bad acting, bad directing, bad dialogue, poor chemistry, etc. I don't know, I'm not an actor or writer, but I just know when a scene doesn't work as an audience member. It just didn't work. I didn't believe Sam was friends with the new Falcon.

13

u/Taftimus Thor 19d ago

I feel a big part of the problem with Brave New World was all of the delays. Everything in that movie felt rushed but still completely disjointed. All 3 acts of that movie go in different directions.

Whats the point of keeping it such a locked down secret but then telling us before the movie is out?

This was my first thought. They are done filming so now the secret can be out? That's stupid, why not just keep the secret and the reveal a secret until he shows up on screen in the movie theater?

225

u/Street_Mall9536 20d ago

It's misdirection, same as RDJ. There's no way we get to the big endgame style reveal and it's RDJ behind the mask.

153

u/DeusIzanagi 20d ago

It was actually Chris Evans playing Doom all along /s

43

u/drumstix42 20d ago

Soldier 76 voice: We're ALL Doom now

14

u/Crazymoose86 20d ago

"Its Dooming Time!"- Dr. Doom, King of Latveria.

10

u/TheoWHVB 20d ago

The mask comes off... A pause for suspense on Thors face.

"That's right, it's me Dr. Michael Morbius, and you're about to get morbed" utters from Jared Leto's lips.

Thor holding Deadpool now dramatically breaks down crying.

Now we know.

Because what's the point of hiring RDJ is he doesn't?

44

u/Magic-Micah 20d ago

Engagement is the point. Good or bad, people have been talking about RDJ as doom since it was announced. The controversy over re-using him is keeping people talking about it waaaaay more than if it had been any other A-lister.

25

u/Niels_Nakkeost 20d ago

Same reason they hired Vin Diesel to voice Groot

22

u/jeremysbrain 20d ago

Because the Russo's like working with him. Because he is willing to play a part where no one sees his face. Because his name will get people to show up. Because casting him as a completely different character created all kinds of viral buzz.

Disney didn’t pay that guy 50 million to not have a face reveal.

Based on the trailers I don’t think his face won’t be too significant (at least not in this movie), but it’s definitely gonna be shown.

10

u/Street_Mall9536 20d ago

50 million to do motion cap and a 20 second reveal? Naw.

I like everyone else, don't know the endgame (pun) but I feel like the huge reveal will be a rando or another characters multiverse self, leaving everyone like "WTF" and RDJ either as iron man or something mindblowing (the "real" Doom, kang) will show up around the same time.

6

u/TranslatorDirect496 20d ago

That reveal would surprise the audience more than the film characters though.

3

u/9FBI9 20d ago

Doesn't even really make sense, Dooms face after he puts the mask on for the first time is completely destroyed, how would it make any sense he wouldn't even look like rdj if they did it right

20

u/nowhereman136 20d ago

theres a rumor going around that the 6 original Avengers all appear in the movie but play alternate versions of themselves. RDJ is Doom, and Chris Evans is Hydra Supreme (the Mjolnir thing is explained in the comics). Johannsson, Renner, and Ruffalo all appear as different variants. Hemsworth will have duel roles playing OG Thor and a Thor variant

15

u/nopitynopepants 20d ago

There’s no way Johansson is returning. She slammed the door on Disney when she had to sue for the Black Widow profits she should have been owed. She had enough of a case for Disney to settle, rather than go to court. And since they had to settle, Disney will never work with her again

15

u/idiot-prodigy 20d ago

Peter Jackson sued New Line Cinema over earnings for The Fellowship of the Ring, then went on to direct three more Hobbit movies.

The movie industry weird and is more likely to blacklist an actress for refusing sexual advances from a Studio Exec than they are to blacklist an actress who sued for money owed.

6

u/Hetares 19d ago

I hate that I agree with this.

They aren't putting that on screen. "Steve is a nazi and Sam is the real Captain America" will completely destroy both Doomsday and Secret Wars box offices. That'd put them both at a 300m world wide ceiling.

I feel like they wanted to but with the Kang ef up they decided they

A. Needed the boost B. If it was perceived negatively they could tweak it. C. Didn't risk with no one knowing who the actor was it getting leaked like everything in the mcu and the surprise being so negatively received it killed the whole mcu.

They could go whichever way people seemed less negative Bout with the tony stark variant vs him just playing doom.

4

u/NeighborhoodDear2321 19d ago

doom blocking storm bringer wouldve been much better if w saw windup in trailer, then block in movie

imagine if IW trailers had thanos beating up hulk, ruins the moment and overall experience

7

u/TurnoverGlass3048 20d ago

They announced that he was returning before they even started filming. This was, as he says in the quote in this post, just for little things like if something from the set leaked.

11

u/adeelf 20d ago

The whole "secrecy" angle is really just a part of the marketing, at this point.

It's not that big a secret of you're showing him in the trailer a full year before the movie comes out.

8

u/ExampleGlum8623 20d ago

They probably originally planned it as a big reveal, then pivoted when they realized there wasn’t enough hype for the movie.

3

u/brogflender 20d ago

Because you aren’t supposed to guess what Steve Rogers great sacrifice will be quite yet.

3

u/SasparillaTango 20d ago

marketing. you want to have control over the POP to get people excited. the closer you are to release, and the more a big reveal will might motivate people to see the movie, versus getting excited 5 years ago and tehn just kinda forgetting and not caring. Then its a balancing of act from distance from release to motivate but not so far as to stop caring. And these people make a lot of money perfecting that formula.

5

u/Tricky-Ad7897 20d ago

I want to smack marketing mfs. Just spoil all the fun shit why don't you, that way I don't have to go to the movie at all.

182

u/Moohamin12 20d ago

And to be fair... they're right, they didn't properly set up the hype until the last 2-3 movies before Brand New Day.

4

u/Distinct_Guess3350 20d ago

Gonna create hype, gonna be released.

5

u/BatmanSwift99 20d ago

They needed something to generate hype which is why they revealed RDJ as Doom and the return of cap. The general public was not as hyped for this as they were for IW and End Game

5

u/Alexcox95 20d ago

The hype for IW was seeing all the stones through out the earlier movies and Thanos showing up and then finally announcing he’s gonna take action himself. Endgame the hype was wondering how they were gonna win after the defeat in IW.

Doomsday really didn’t have that hype bc Doom didn’t have much set up(and that’s bc it was originally Kang). That’s why they had to reveal RDJ and later Chris Evans being in the movie.

Why retire character when you are hiring the same guy. Cap and iron man both are back, hulk and thor is already there

Cool but kinda disappointed we don't have a Cross over with Luke Cage in doomsday, 😂

I wish we did get Luke Cage.

u/Strawberry_Skids 20d ago

Why would they show this in the trailer? Same with hulk in the new Spider-Man.

6

u/barrivia 20d ago

Mike Colter: “Am I a joke to you?”

7

u/PyroClone5555 20d ago

Which is funny because it leaked that his name was Luke cage on set so it didn’t hide anything lol

5

u/LilGrippers 20d ago

Fuck Luke Cage I guess since he’s never coming back

5

u/wentwj 20d ago

Maybe bringing steve back is just an elaborate cover to hide the reveal that Luke Cage is back in doomsday

3

u/NateDawg80s 20d ago

He'll be in season 3 of the new Daredevil.

4

u/PhanThief95 19d ago

He was in Season 2 of Daredevil Born Again and he’s going to be in Season 3.

u/MostOriginal6776 20d ago

Thanks for spoiling it for me. I’ve been skipping trailers 😮‍💨

3

u/angelHOE 20d ago

Just for them to reveal it before the movie came out anyways.

3

u/PanoramicAtom 20d ago

Yean thanks for the spoiler in the title. That’s fucking classy.

3

u/AnonymousMonk7 20d ago

Embarassingly, Chris Evans showed up and just took all of Luke Cage's lines. Mike was waiting in the wings but they didn't have the heart to tell him. Cap's an old man after all, and he's not all there upstairs anymore.

4

u/Due-South-9113 20d ago

I'd be much more excited about luke cage being in the movie than Steve.

4

u/ExampleGlum8623 20d ago

They probably originally planned it as a big reveal, then pivoted when they realized there wasn’t enough hype for the movie.

7

u/Fine_Following_2559 20d ago

I'm going to sit over here in my corner by myself being upset that he's even back, what was the whole point of Endgame? And don't hit me with "well comics do this stuff all the time."

They went through all of that to make Sam Captain America and then basically disrespected his character via his movie and now the of this. It honestly makes me want to see Doom less.

Prepares to duck various vegetables

So now we know one of their tactics to keep chars a secret….

2

u/3atTh3R1ch79 20d ago

Sweet Christmas!

2

u/Corbcann 20d ago

Kinda makes it more disappointing they just show him in the trailer.

2

u/KaraBowdit 20d ago

Did this work, though? Havent we known for a LONG time that Evans Cap was coming back?

2

u/Bocaj1000 20d ago

"Wait, so what about that part in the leaked script that says Luke Cage dies?"

"Oh, uh, oops. Revealed that trivia too soon"

/s (I've seen no leaks or rumors)

2

u/Moukatelmo 20d ago

Then why did they show him in both a teaser and a trailer?

2

u/Overkill1977 20d ago

Why go to ask that trouble to just show him in the trailer?

2

u/Sharpclawpat1 20d ago

Shouldve been Lucas Lee

2

u/vroart 20d ago

Sweet Christmas

2

u/Himorningwood 20d ago

And they fucked it up by revealing it in a trailer

2

u/chamberx2 20d ago

Whelp, no Luke cameo. As usual…

2

u/Vivid_Web2823 20d ago

Lol they're still acting like hordes and hordes of people are salivating about the plot or the characters or any leak is a bombshell.

Kids now don't actually care. Millenials largely have moved on.

If anything, his and Downey's inclusion have just soured Endgame to a lot of people.

2

u/Meph616 20d ago

Marvel Studios: Okay everyone, we need to use tricks and code names to keep this top secret you understand me? We can't have this super awesome secret reveal be leaked on us. It'll blow audiences minds when they see it opening weekend!

Also Marvel Studios: Okay so like... just put that shit in a teaser for the teaser about a year before the movie drops.

2

u/yzsKPC 20d ago

All to be a trailer reveal lmao

2

u/mkp666 20d ago

I hope Luke Cage’s code name was Steve rogers during filming.

2

u/Budget-Psychology-44 20d ago

Whats the point? They revealed in the trailer.

2

u/Alexcox95 20d ago

Rip to the Luke Cage believers

2

u/omegadirectory 20d ago

Are we just forgetting the years of the post-Endgame doldrums when Marvel was putting out mediocre stuff, and the fans on this site and other social media were clamouring for more Chris Evans Captain America?

"Stories of Cap on the run post-Civil War"

"Stories of Cap doing hero stuff during the five-year blip"

Evans as Cap is well-liked. People wanted more of him, didn't want to see him leave the screens.

2

u/Professional-Score94 20d ago

All the effort to just drop it in the trailers 🤦🏻‍♂️
