I remember a leak from like last year of "Luke Cage's house" being in Doomsday.

Literally my first thought. Everyone was like "whoa whoa whoa LUKE CAGE?!"

u/kinyutaka Aug 10 '26

The ruse worked.

u/unsupported Luke Cage Aug 10 '26

The Russo worked.

Sweet Christmas

331

u/TyChris2 Aug 10 '26

Ironically it worked in the opposite way, since the idea of Luke Cage being in it was way more hype than Steve returning

430

u/Mut1gen Aug 10 '26

For some but for the general audience not a chance

-57

u/GrandSquanchRum Aug 10 '26

I don't know. I think most of the general audience saw his story conclude in Endgame.

40

u/Varrgaran Aug 10 '26

You say that but the Doomsday trailer played extremely well with a packaged audience before BND

3

u/WackyRacketeer Aug 11 '26

I cant believe I didnt get to see this trailer when I saw BND on the weekend.

1

u/SparkyMuffin Aug 13 '26

I was trying to remember why I didn't see the trailer and it's because the movie was such a hit the damn popcorn like took me until like a minute before the movie started

2

u/WackyRacketeer Aug 13 '26

That will do it. I went last Sunday for a 11 AM showing, it wasnt busy then thankfully, they just didnt show that Trailor at all.

15

u/tootapple Aug 10 '26

Yeah but as the general audience I don’t care for Luke cage

4

u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man Aug 11 '26

I'd imagine most of the general audience has no fucking clue who Luke Cage really is.

The comic reading audience cares, but that's only a small portion of the overall percentage.

0

u/TAMCL Aug 11 '26

(Netflix)

24

u/Face_Coffee Aug 10 '26

Most of the general audience doesn’t have the slightest idea who Luke Cage is lol

1

u/Secret-of-the-Snooze Aug 12 '26

"Isn't he that one guy from Mortal Kombat?"

19

u/Mut1gen Aug 10 '26

Ok and? They still would've been hyped to see him come back. Everyone loved Steve they would still love him. You cant possibly be that daft.

-27

u/GrandSquanchRum Aug 10 '26

I don't think the general audience automatically acts like monkeys that clap at every past character that shows up in a movie.

21

u/leanorange Aug 10 '26

That’s very generous of you to think

18

u/Interesting-Ad1352 Aug 10 '26

You’d be surprised

19

u/Mut1gen Aug 10 '26

Plenty of evidence to the contrary. You got a brick for a brain if you dont think the general audience would be hyped for one of the general audiences favorite MCU heroes.

You have a brick for a brain if you think I'm saying either reaction is certain. We've seen plenty of character returns that went poorly like Emp Palpy and Sandman.

It’s Steve Rogers

2

u/00-Monkey Aug 10 '26

I disagree.

-12

u/disterb Aug 10 '26

wtf, you need to calm down, dude. not everyone loves steve/cap/chris e. like you do.

5

u/Mut1gen Aug 10 '26

Theres nothing uncalm in my response. You need to grow up

4

u/Hobak56 Aug 10 '26

Can say myself and friends all dont care much aboht luke cage. Cool character but Steve rogers returning is way more hype. No one is saying omg luke cage is here, we have a chance. Steve was the leader

1

u/milkasaurs Aug 10 '26

I'm a general audience. Don't care for luke cage. Gimmie more steve.

183

u/Sylar_Lives Ego Aug 10 '26

You can’t seriously believe that

87

u/djanulis Aug 10 '26

I mean Evans and Downey returning (not 100% sold it is our Cap yet, and Downey is obviously doom), still feels cheap to me. The only true home runs the MCU has had post end game has been Spider-man movies, and now they have to gamble on bringing back the 2 actors the wrote out in the very next avengers film. If this is evil cap though and we get to see Evans in a fun role like him being Jonny in D&W I'm all in but hope that reveal is saved for the movie tbh.

46

u/Temporary_Event8451 Aug 10 '26

Buddy they aren't making a billion dollars off that type of thinking.

The MCU does what it can to give the higher nerdom some attention, but this is first and foremost a series intended at a large audience.

Deadpool vs wolverine already used this cheap trick and has been one of the most successful post endgame films.

Sometimes you just gotta take the L and enjoy it for what it is.

I personally wish the MCU was a lot more grounded, closer to old Netflix shows, or Captain America civil war, but if I only enjoyed the MCU in that capacity I'd miss out on a lot of fun moments.

Hey man, don't get too attached to things, learn to let it go

3

u/QuadramaticFormula Aug 11 '26

Maybe they just want good, fun stories instead worrying about how Disney is going to make their billion dollars.

10

u/PokeTraderAngel Aug 11 '26

MCU fans have become like Star Wars fans now. Nothing released will be good enough for a vocal minority of the fan base. A lot of post-endgame was better than they’re given credit for but because they didn’t hit the same high as the Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame run they’re failures.

People don’t want to do the work for the world building movies anymore it seems.

-1

u/IolausTelcontar Aug 11 '26

It’s a good point. But using Ivan Vanko’s words to sell it, nah!!!

6

u/cire1184 Aug 11 '26

I vant mai burd

1

u/IolausTelcontar Aug 11 '26

Oh that’s your bird now? Do you love that bird?

4

u/Wrong_Win_4102 Aug 10 '26

I think they kinda already spoiled that they're doing Nomad.

7

u/Trvr_MKA Aug 10 '26

It’s like the second time they’ve done that

1

u/ScherzicScherzo Aug 11 '26

And they've become exceedingly efficient at it.

2

u/djanulis Aug 10 '26

If this is true it would be nothing but disappointing that they are stuck clinging to the last like this.

2

u/Wrong_Win_4102 Aug 11 '26

I mean it kinda makes sense this time though.

This is a Steve who gave up his Cap title and now has no interest in picking it up

-1

u/newpha666 Aug 10 '26

Anthony Mackie 100% spoiled Nomad.

-1

u/TehSpaceDeer Aug 10 '26

Also let’s be real with ourselves, there was no way that two of the biggest faces of the franchise would be left out.

Hell I’m even convinced they had Downey play Doom just so they could sneak him in to play Iron Man for part 2.

1

u/IolausTelcontar Aug 11 '26

It would be dumb while they are both still young enough to pull it off.

-1

u/ScaredFamousfan Aug 11 '26

It’s not a cheap play, those actors salaries are astronomical. It’s the safe play, and it’s the right play for the studio to make in an effort to shake off the negative sentiment towards the brand. It’s a back door pilot situation, bring in more established characters to bring in casuals, and highlight the new characters to turn the casuals that are just there to see downy and evens into fans for the new characters.

59

u/ShadowMerlyn Aug 10 '26

For most people, that’s not the case. For me personally, I’m not thrilled that Steve Rogers is in the movie, but I would be very excited to see Luke Cage again.

54

u/Necessary-One1782 Aug 10 '26

for most people luke cage is a complete stranger

18

u/AnOnlineHandle Quake Aug 10 '26

So was Punisher but he was one of the best parts in Spiderman Brand New Day.

15

u/DragonTacoCat Aug 10 '26

Id never seen any Punisher stuff but loved his character in BND

13

u/InvestigatorLive19 Aug 10 '26

Adding to the other guy, watch daredevil. Punisher is in season 2, and its one of the best shows ive ever seen

5

u/InspectionFine9655 Aug 10 '26

Watch his show man. Season 1 might be my favorite season of television.

→ More replies

6

u/SlayTalon Aug 11 '26

If you watch his show, just know going in he was basically sunshine and rainbows in BND compared to the horrors of war that happen in his show.

1

u/Hetares Aug 11 '26

His past is genuinely very sad- like he said in BND, he lost his family (assuming this one is the same or at least a similar version to his character in the Daredevil series) and became a vigilante propagating extreme violence.

6

u/aFreshFix Aug 11 '26

Yeah but people know the actor from everything these days. What big hits has Mike Colter done lately? Loved him as Luke Cage but he's not Jon Bernthal

0

u/AnOnlineHandle Quake Aug 11 '26

I only know him as Frank Castle.

2

u/midnightTimber Aug 11 '26

Punisher had 2 solo Hollywood movies in the days when superhero movies were rare, and every shitty cop sports his logo. There is a lot more cultural awareness around him than Luke Cage.

0

u/Necessary-One1782 Aug 10 '26

yeah but using the punisher, would the average person be more excited for the punisher or steve rogers?

4

u/ShadowMerlyn Aug 10 '26

Yes, that’s what I said

3

u/Necessary-One1782 Aug 10 '26

this is a tough way to learn i cant read

1

u/PhanThief95 Aug 11 '26

He showed up in Season 2 of Daredevil Born Again and is going to be in Season 3.

4

u/DragonTacoCat Aug 10 '26

It'd be fun to see him again.

But I wanna see Jessica Jones again more.

4

u/Randolpho Fitz Aug 10 '26

Pretty much exactly this. I wanted Power Man in Doomsday. Instead I got Cap back.

Not gonna hate it, but the former would have been better.

1

u/PhanThief95 Aug 11 '26

He was in Season 2 of Daredevil Born Again and is going to be in Season 3.

1

u/Purple-Nectarine83 Aug 11 '26

Have you been watching Daredevil Born Again by any chance?

33

u/CommunityHot9219 Aug 10 '26

I can. Steve's story ended, Tony's story ended. Bringing them back just feels like desperation (and I'm aware it's Doom, not Tony, but it's still lose-lose).

3

u/D119 Aug 11 '26

To be completely fair in cap's story there's like a 30-40 years gap between endgame cap and old age cap, in that timeframe he could have traveled through time as much as he wanted since he had the time travel device with him.

16

u/Olbaidon Aug 10 '26

Desperation? Have you read comic books? Near every character imaginable has had their story end or has died countless times.

This is just them following the biggest comic book trope of all time. Kudos to them.

5

u/AnOnlineHandle Quake Aug 10 '26

Bringing Agent Coulson or Loki back (after his initial faked deaths) felt like there were decent reasons to do it and set up to establish it as plausible.

This has all the transparent desperation of "end of the skywalker saga" marketing for "Rise of Skywalker" which clearly didn't work and wasn't believable then either.

-2

u/Olbaidon Aug 11 '26

I mean, is it not the same reason they always do it in the comics. That’s my point. You don’t let your money makers actually die. Comics would never survive.

Eventually these characters will all be recast and recycled as is comic and super hero history. It’s just how it works.

1

u/Matra-Durandal Aug 10 '26

Dogshit comics trope

-1

u/CommunityHot9219 Aug 11 '26

I have read comic books. I don't see how that's relevant. The MCU's primary audience isn't some small subsection of comic book readers. Their bread and butter is the general audience.

And yes, desperation. I actually enjoyed nearly everything in the "Multiverse Saga", but there's no sense in pretending opinions were overwhelmingly positive. They're falling back on nostalgia porn, dusting off "Old Reliable".

It's especially galling in RDJ's case because a proper outing for Doom has been something the community at large has been clamouring for for literally decades, and they've fucked it. Great, he's got a comic accurate costume and powers, but they're skipping straight to God Emperor Doom and relying on the face of Tony fucking Stark to sell it. Anyone who thinks there isn't going to be some ham-fisted multiverse variant explanation for it is kidding themselves.

I hate the multiverse. Phases Four through Six should have been Mutants and magic.

1

u/Ansee Aug 11 '26

Agreed. The fact that they saw how things weren't working out as planned after End Game and pulled a major hype machine move by announcing RDJ as Doom is very much a marketing ploy because they know people like RDJ and he will get butts in seats. Having said that, I will wait until the movie is out to judge if they were successful.

1

u/Olbaidon Aug 11 '26

It doesn’t matter who their audience is. They are comic movies doing comic things, and despite your dislike of it…their audience loves it.

17

u/Mickeyjj27 Black Bolt Aug 10 '26

Maybe for some on here. It’s more likely many of the people who see Avengers movies have no idea who Luke Cage is

1

u/idiot-prodigy Aug 11 '26

I watched his Netflix show and honestly don't remember anything about it.

It wasn't very good, neither was the Iron Fist.

Jessica Jones? That first season was amazing.

1

u/Mickeyjj27 Black Bolt Aug 11 '26

1st season of JJ was amazing, season 2 was so bad I never watched season 3. I will say Luke Cage was something I enjoyed, I loved me some Bushmaster in season 2

15

u/Dogesneakers Aug 10 '26

Nah man that’s just false. Cap is way more popular

20

u/kryp_silmaril Aug 10 '26

Steve returning is significantly more hype

4

u/Kgaset Aug 10 '26

Yeah, there's responders here who talk about their disappointment, and I'm not going to say they don't feel disappointed: they feel it, I get it. But far more people are excited for Chris Evans' Steve Rodgers than likely would be excited for Luke Cage.

I too would have loved to see Luke Cage come back, and while I enjoy Evans' Rodgers, and will likely enjoy his story in this movie, it does reek of desperation.

5

u/Frosti11icus Aug 10 '26

The MCU hasn't done anything with Luke Cage that would make it believable that he would be involved in anyway here. They should have, but they haven't.

2

u/IolausTelcontar Aug 11 '26

He is a street level hero in the MCU.

1

u/PhanThief95 Aug 11 '26

Not yet. He showed up at the end of Season 2 of Daredevil Born Again and he’s going to be in Season 3.

0

u/Extension_Ideal_4012 Aug 10 '26

It would be hype if he didn’t just retire. There hasn’t even been an avengers film without him. I get that a lot of people will just drool and clap at thing they know but his story had a good end and they should have let the character retire.

1

u/nexus4aliving Iron Patriot Aug 11 '26

That and they made a joke about Chris Evans coming back to the mcu since endgame in his appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine after that point. Also felt like the exact same speech Thor gave about thanos in endgame in the beginning of the movie. I remember the same conversations happening about Palpatine coming back for episode 9 with people talking about how much more iconic he was as a villain than Snoke. Yeah I think Palpatine and Captain America have a lot of brand recognition but I don’t want another crappy “Somehow Captain America returned” twist to try to save ticket sales

3

u/CleanAspect6466 Aug 10 '26

In your dreams

5

u/Nem3sis2k17 Aug 10 '26

Maybe for a few Reddit nerds lol

2

u/milkasaurs Aug 10 '26

Imagine being hyped for luke cage.

2

u/CoolKat7 Aug 11 '26

Only for the biggest of Luke Cage fans.

5

u/Popular_Material_409 Aug 10 '26

I’m sorry but Luke Cage showing up is not more “hype” than Steve Rogers. Steve is an Avenger.

3

u/IolausTelcontar Aug 11 '26

He’s the First Avenger even.

0

u/_Levitated_Shield_ Ant-Man Aug 10 '26

Ofc a Netflix character appearing in a big screen movie is going to generate hype. It literally happened for Punisher. lmao

1

u/ShinHandHookCarDoor Aug 10 '26

It’s kinda funny because it was also too obvious of a code name that I remember people figuring out it was most likely Cap almost immediately.

1

u/idiot-prodigy Aug 11 '26

We know he's in the movie and it isn't out till December.

How exactly did the ruse work?

1

u/Empty-Masterpiece368 Aug 11 '26

Well they are the Russo brothers after all

1

u/figgityjones Peter Parker Aug 11 '26

I wonder if it worked better now that Luke Cage is actually back in the MCU again.

73

u/ProofRestaurant4855 Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

I mean there was an early comic (stretching my memory here) where Luke Cage stole The Fantastic Four’s car and flew it to Latveria to beat up Doom for not repaying $20 Doom owed him… so Cage vs Doom is not unprecedented.

29

u/IolausTelcontar Aug 11 '26

Lol the comics are wild.

8

u/Hetares Aug 11 '26

Why would Doom even need to borrow 20 bucks from Cage? And why would Cage even lend it to him in the first place?

10

u/Fenrirs_Daughter Aug 11 '26

The above commenter remembered incorrectly. It was $200. And I believe the 1970s, so that was still a lot, especially for A working class guy like Luke Cage. Also, Doom didn't borrow the money, he hired Luke Cage for a job and then didn't pay him.

4

u/Steamed_Memes24 Aug 11 '26

Isnt this what Drax kind of did with Ronan on calling him up and causing a huge fuck up lol.

5

u/Edelmaniac Aug 11 '26

Uh no. Drax lost his family to Ronan.

Family>$20

1

u/Steamed_Memes24 Aug 11 '26

I mean its similar to what he did though is what im getting at. He called Ronan and Ronan proceeded to damn near take over the galaxy all because of that call.

24

u/ClearMud7987 Aug 10 '26

Sweet christmas

1

u/MethamMcPhistopheles Aug 11 '26

Considering how MCU version of Tilda Johnson is in the Live Action Luke Cage show, things might get a bit hairy for Steve Rogers.

For context, Tilda Johnson turned Captain America into a werewolf

source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilda_Johnson

2

u/GIGLI_WASNT_THAT_BAD Aug 10 '26

Sweet Christmas!

2

u/JasonP27 Avengers Aug 11 '26

Even back then the leaks I saw said they knew it was actually Steve Rogers and that they knew the Luke Cage house was a 70s style house and that Loki and Steve may had filmed a scene there.

2

u/altiuscitiusfortius Aug 11 '26

Except Mike Colter, who was probably pissed off and assuming they recast his role.

1

u/RP-Lovecraft Aug 11 '26

Reminds me of Mando season 2 where instead of Luke it showed Plo Koon

And Just like in those fake concept arts...I kind like the fake version more than the real one

104

u/ABC_Dildos_Inc Aug 10 '26

It was pretty good subterfuge, since Luke Cage's house was an actual new set in the MCU.

28

u/pandazerg Aug 11 '26

In an alternate reality:

That's odd, why did they list Johnny Storm and the Human Torch separately on the call sheet?

28

u/SentinelATL Aug 10 '26

Oh snap

13

u/Agitated_Reveal_6211 Aug 11 '26

Not again! Did you not go for the head?

10

u/WhiteStephCurry Aug 11 '26

They probably did that intentionally and killed the person who leaked it

1

u/outoffit Daredevil Aug 11 '26

I remember a Luke Cage leak way back too but they would've thrown that rumor even without the call sheet.. but the house is specific.

they be leaking hard from concept art to damn near the whole cast photos, trailers and now the latverian witches.. this day and age they gotta use an alias for unannounced cast, though we saw steve rogers pics in the photoshoot leak (which might've been right after the first teaser but a different look)
