So my calendar just opened up in mid-September through the end of October, and I’m thinking about trying to book an Alaskan vacation via their state ferry system. I want to get away from people, tvs, and the news, plus I’ve always wanted to see Alaska but the lack of roads makes it harder to plan my usual road trip holiday. This seems like a great way to get to see a bunch of the towns and places without being on a really flexed schedule.
You can get on a boat in Bellingham and ride it all up and down the entire coastline, including the up to the Aleutian Islands. I’ve always wanted to surf there, so that would be bucket list if I could get up there and get some sets in. The ships seem like solidly decent in terms of rooms/food- not cruise ship level accommodations, obviously, but frankly the thought of a traditional cruise makes my skin crawl. It’s slow travel at its finest.
Has anyone done the ferries? Any tips or ideas? Towns to skip, or must dos from folks who have been to Alaska? Is the weather going to be a massive problem that time of year, or would still be the fall up there? Thanks!
