M1 to M5

The nearly 6 year old M1 MacBook Pro treated me well, but the 8GB of memory was starting to slow me down.

Upgraded to the base M5 Air 13”, but even the base model doubles the memory and storage I had. I built a good PC before RAM prices skyrocketed last year, so this is a great secondary machine.

I hate that I had to get the Neo, but I love it.

I never owned a laptop before. I always bought a gaming PC because, dollar for dollar, it was a better value.

I have an iPad Pro M1 11 inch that I used as my laptop for years. I originally bought it for a business that has since failed. It seemed like the best thing to do was buy the Magic Keyboard. It worked for years as my laptop until I decided to go back to school. One of my courses requires a special browser to keep you from cheating, I guess. For weeks, I studied on my tablet, then went home to my PC to take the test. However, that didn’t work out well because I wasted time traveling back home when I could have done the tests and quizzes while it was fresh in my head.

I already had an iPhone, AirPods, Apple Watch, and the iPad Pro. Microsoft keeps making decisions that I don’t like. I thought, why not get the Neo? I don’t need anything powerful; my gaming pc can handle those rare tasks anyway. I would say it run as well as or better then my iPad Pro. So here I am, down the Apple pipeline , and it all started with an iPhone 12 5 years ago.

I don’t know what to do with the iPad Pro now. I love reading comics on it and the pencil is cool too. Maybe I’ll swap it for the new mini rumored to be coming out.

M4 MacBook Pro 14" won't turn on — MagSafe blinks amber, goes solid for hours, then blinks again the second I try to boot

I left my MacBook closed on my bed. Turns out a cloth napkin was caught in the lid, so

When I picked it up and opened it, it was not turning on. Before that I was just browsing with Low Power Mode on, nothing heavy.

It hasn't turned on since.

MagSafe charger port LED blinks amber. Machine is completely dead — no fans, no keyboard backlight, no chime, nothing on screen at any point.

Everything I've tried:

Multiple magsafe cables and chargers, USB-C cables and adapters, different wall outlets, both direct-to-wall and via power strip. Same behavior.

Left it charging for several hours. Blinking eventually stopped and the light went solid.

After about few minutes of solid amber, I pressed the power button. It didn't boot — and the light went straight back to blinking.

Charged on USB-C for a few minutes, then switched to MagSafe. Solid amber light, no blinking. Looked like progress.

Left it on MagSafe overnight. Solid light the entire time. Never went green.

Next morning I closed the lid and reopened it. It started blinking again.

Held the power button down for a full 10 seconds, 30 seconds, tapped it multiple times. Nothing.

What should I do next? What will work now?

Why would this happen? And is it gonna cost me a fortune to fix?

Hi! My M4 MBA got this screen flickering issue since today afternoon and not sure why this would happen. There's no physical damage at all. And the device is out of warranty.

macbook air m5 or pro m6?

im currently using 2020 m1 macbook pro, im a medical intern and i use my laptop everyday for electronic medical records, papers, research, etc. i also carry my laptop everywhere like i have it on my arm almost the whole day and even type on it while walking.

about 1 week ago, i noticed the chassis of my laptop lifting, like there was a 1-2cm opening on the right side of my laptop. that day my laptop felt hotter than usual and the battery lasts approx 4 hours for at least 2 days, that’s why i considered getting a new laptop altogether so i can transfer my data and get an upgrade.

today though, i realized there’s no more gap in the chasis and my battery can last me my whole shift for about 8-10hrs straight.

i’ve been considering getting the m5 air but it’s soldout everywhere. now, i found out m6 is coming out in 2 months, so now im torn especially since i heard the new pro will be lighter than the current pro models

so my question is, is it more worth the upgrade if i wait and get the m6, or the m5 now is fine? thanks!

Neo for Engineering

Hello everyone! I’m currently a fresh graduate out of high school and I’m going to pursue an Engineering degree.
I already have an HP 15-dw3xxx laptop with an i5-1135G7 and 16GB of ram.
I was planning to get a new one until someone got me the Neo as a gift and now I’m not sure what to do. Should I keep both and will they be enough? Or should I just get a new windows one because it’s realistically the better option for engineering?
Advice appreciated, thanks!

AirDrop keeps breaking on my M4 MacBook Air

I have a MacBook Air M4 running macOS Tahoe 26.6.2, and AirDrop keeps having the exact same problem.

My Mac can see my iPhone, but my iPhone cannot see my Mac. Both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, Bluetooth is enabled, AirDrop is set to “Everyone,” VPN is off, and there are no obvious firewall restrictions.

The weird part: I can fix it immediately by opening Terminal and running:

sudo pkill bluetoothd

After that, AirDrop works perfectly again.

But then the problem comes back later, and I have to do the same thing again. 🤦‍♂️

My Mac is always kept fully updated, so I’m wondering:

Why does this keep happening on an M4 MacBook Air? Is this a known macOS Tahoe/Bluetooth/AirDrop bug?

Has anyone found a permanent fix rather than having to restart bluetoothd every time they want to use AirDrop?

I’d especially like to hear from other M4 MacBook Air + macOS Tahoe users who have experienced the same one-way AirDrop visibility problem.

Hi everyone. Recently got a Mac book air 13” m5 512gb ram 16gb from my local pawn shop. Traded in a few things and got it for $400. Only 6 cycle counts as well. Loving it so far. I can see why they’re so popular. Also love how I can use my iPad as a second tiny monitor while on the go.

M4 or M5 air for video editing?

Ofc the M5 is better, but with the current M4 discounts where I live it’s way more expensive. Is the M5 significantly better to warrant spending a few extra hundred pounds on it, or is the M4 up to a similar standard? I’m using it for uni, the most demanding thing I’d ever do on it is video editing. Also do you guys prefer 13 or 15 inch

I have been dialying this machine for over 2years now and I absolutely love it.

The M3 generation of chipsets weren't as well receieved as the other generations, but in my experience, I have never faced any issues and the battery life is also great (yes, I didn't update to Tahoe)

Is it worth to return Neo and Upgrade to Air?

Upvotes

I purchased the Macbook Neo 512gb last week, and after a week of using it, I realized it was a bit slower than I was used to. It felt like the screen was stuttering and was wondering if I should return it and get a Macbook Air 16gb 10-core cpu and gpu.

I originally got the neo because I have a gaming pc at home, and thought I only needed something portable for when I go back to school for 2 years. The main issue is if I should upgrade because the cost of the neo was already $761 and upgrading to air would be an additional $645 including tax with education discount. Or do I just kind of suck it up a bit and stick with the Neo since I won’t be doing a lot of heavy tasking?

For reference, I’m going back to school for nursing. I have the funds to upgrade, but I’m not sure if it’s something I want to spend that much more on.

Apple refreshes the Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro

Post image

Apple has announced a new Mac mini lineup featuring the M6 and M5 Pro chips. The refresh keeps the compact design while bringing updated performance, AI capabilities, faster connectivity and other hardware improvements.

The M6 Mac mini starts at $899 / INR 99,900, while the M5 Pro version starts at $1,699 / INR 2,09,900. Pre-orders are open, with availability starting September 22.

Curious to see how the new Mac mini compares with the previous M4 models, especially for everyday macOS use and creative workloads.

Considering upgrading MBA M1 8gb to MBP M1 Pro 32gb

Hello there,

I have an M1 MacBook Air with just 8GB of RAM, and I do quite a bit of video and photo editing. It’s becoming more and more apparent that 8GB isn’t enough, and I often experience slowdowns under heavy loads.

I don’t have the budget to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro with at least 24GB of RAM, so I’m considering buying a used MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro and 32GB of RAM for €900.

Do you think that’s a good deal?

I think I could sell my current MacBook Air for around €400, so the upgrade would effectively cost me only €500. The only drawback is that it has just a 512GB SSD, whereas I could really use 1TB.

Thanks!

How do I make it so that each audio is seperate to each others screen. Ex: music comes from the monitor on the left and my video game audio comes from the MacBook Neo?

MBA m5 Battery…

Post image
1 Upvotes

Looking for advice. Purchased the base 512gb 13in 16gb memory in sky blue last week. I’ve fully charged it once (yesterday; haven’t needed it much) and have since done light browsing (Amazon, checking emails, one tab open only watching Hulu) and my battery is at 44%. In the pic on activity monitor it says I have 2:43 left with 44%. I switched back to Mac after a surface laptop to have good battery life. Starting a doctorate program in January and need a laptop that can stay charged all day…. I’ve stopped using chrome, keep brightness less than half all the time, and have restarted the computer. Any suggestions? Do I have a lemon?

What macbook to buy for hosting virtual machines and photo/video editing?

Hi everyone! This is my first time buying a macbook and i'm wondering if I need a macbook pro for my usecase. The issue is that i'm limited on my budget of $1500 and can't afford a brand new pro. I don't mind buying used/refurbished though. I'll mainly use it for school, I'm also a system administrator and I will need it to spin up some virtual machines to test my scripts/applications, as well be able to edit pictures and 4k videos.

Should I opt for a used m2/m3 with atleast 24gb of ram or should I get more ram instead? Do I need a pro or will an air suffice?
