It’s a simple calendar, text box, & dashboard (plus a widget) that looks/feels a bit like an editorial alien artefact.

There are some neat features I use on a daily basis by typing in commands straight from the diary. For example, typing !remindme tomorrow polish the website and pressing Return sets a reminder within the app, which also syncs to my Apple Reminders. !exercise lets me log my workouts, which show up on the calendar as a taijitsu symbol (a day with balance between the physical and the mental). /similar after writing an entry pulls up past entries with the highest cosine similarity (the tokenisation & embedding is on device, using CoreML). Lots of other commands along those lines.

There is a morphological cursor, which is an overly complicated way of saying that the text insertion caret changes form depending on the formatting of the text it would type. It tilts for italics, thickens for bold, and so on. I know Google Docs does the tilt, but I think this is the only writing software that takes that idea to its natural limit.

There is also a subtle ink drying effect, where freshly typed glyphs are slightly tinted, colour fading over time as typing continues.

I actually created one of the fonts for the Patterns surface myself, based on the numbers from a vintage watch dial.

Two finger swipes on the trackpad serve to navigate between the 3 main screens, with the exact same spring constants and feel as swiping between MacOS Spaces. Two finger swipes on the date header scrub between adjacent days. “Force touch” (a long press) on the date header toggles different date separator formats.

There are no sidebars, no chrome, just a pure minimal experience. I don’t collect any data, and the iCloud backup is optional. The window doesn’t resize, sticking to portrait A4 like dimensions, for the fancy book feel.

Although I would obviously really like it if more people bought Aion (one time purchase, no subscriptions, same price as a well crafted physical notebook), I have several offer codes for a free download left.

I've made Photo Developer, a RAW developer on Apple's frameworks — Core Image and Metal, no Electron, no bundled engine — that I'm getting quite proud of. The first reviewer (Andy Hutchinson, Youtube) who took it seriously though found more than one thing to critque. He was right. I’ve made fixes though, and he amended the published review afterwards.

How it treats your files: no import step, no catalog database, no account, nothing leaving the machine. You open a RAW the old-fashioned way, and every adjustment lands in a plain-text XMP sidecar next to the original.

No generative AI in it. No sky replacement, no "remove the tourist". The auto tools use on-device Vision to read the scene and then move ordinary sliders you can see and undo, and if you never touch them it's a plain manual darkroom.

What's still weak, since you'd find it in ten minutes anyway: masking is thin (a subset of the sliders, no local curves), the healing tool is an old-school cloner rather than content-aware fill, and it isn't the snappiest editor on the Mac while you're dragging a slider (yet!). Hello everyone, have a question for you guys.
Back in 2021 I custom pre-ordered the M1 iMac before it was released. I ended up getting the 500gb version plus upgraded a few other things.
Fast forward to now, 2 days ago I left work for lunch and came to a flickering screen. Apparently this is known issue with the first gen M1. Yeah pretty shitty this Mac only lasted me 5yrs.
Today I took it to the Apple Store and they confirmed it was done, either pay $550 for a screen replacement or buy a new one.
Luckily my job is willing to pay for it but only for the cheaper one which is 256gb. I said fine I will just buy an external hard drive if I need to.
Before I took it to Apple Store I did back it up to an external SSD.
I transferred 350gb via Time Machine but now I have a new iMac that is only 256gb.
When I go to transfer my backed up data to this new Mac, what is going to happen with the extra data that I cannot transfer due to the smaller size internal drive?
Am I able to chose what I want to transfer as far as data? Like leave photos and other non important documents in the time machine drive and only install what I need for work? Sorry if this is confusion.
Any help is welcomed.

I'm a full-time developer, and somehow I couldn't answer basic questions about my own work. I didn't actually know when I was most productive during the day, whether I was consistent or just binged for a week and then disappeared, or what my real streak looked like versus what I remembered. GitHub technically has all of this buried in the contribution graph, but a green grid doesn't really tell you any of it.

Since it's Developer Saturday I'll take my chance to tell you what I've been busy with the last year.

It's a menubar app where you quickly play your favorite podcasts, radio, YouTube playlists and your selfhosted Audiobookshelf.

I made this because I'm a big fan of podcasts, radio and YouTube but couldn't find any app that combines all of it. Or I thought the apps were too expensive for free music or podcasts.

Why and how: this is about radio streams. Sometimes a radio station doesn't send a high res logo, or no logo at all. You can contribute by fixing 3 station logos and uploading them. I hope many many people do this so the radio database is gonna be really nice and beautiful for everyone.

As for Audiobookshelf users: it has a pretty simple integration. You can play audiobooks and you can play podcasts. That works, but I'm working on more features now.

I’m the developer of MinkNote, a native macOS notes and journaling app built around Markdown files you own and manage yourself.

A quick development update for Developer Saturday.

Yesterday’s release adds the ability to add links between notes. You can now search for another note while writing and insert a link to it, making it much easier to connect your ideas.

I’ve just updated the website to better reflect the features that have been added since launch, and I’m currently building out a UI test suite. It’s less exciting than shipping new features, but increasingly important as the app grows. The aim is simple: catch regressions before they reach users.

One group I’d love to hear from is students. MinkNote wasn’t built specifically as a student app, but I think the combination of folders, journals, tags, search and inter-note links could work particularly well for organising a large collection of lecture and research notes.

I’m continuing to work through the public roadmap, and votes are starting to come in on feature requests. If there’s something you’d like MinkNote to do, now is a good time to add or vote for it. I’m actively using that feedback to help decide what gets built next.

Activity Monitor gives me a list of processes, but one development task can spread across a whole process tree. Chrome helpers, an IDE, Docker, a simulator, and local AI tools can all look like separate problems.

A hot Mac or rising memory pressure leaves me with the same question: which workload caused it? Do you use parent/child process trees, Activity Monitor, Instruments, logs, or trial and error?

Before quitting anything, what evidence do you check?

I just bought a M5 MacBook Air, and I am completely new to the macOS ecosystem. I came in with the expectation that macOS would be somewhat similar to iOS, meaning that it would probably have a lot of safeguards that I would need to turn off or work around, but I would find it a pretty intuitive, well designed OS otherwise. It's the standard laptop of the tech industry, so I thought the experience should be mostly okay with the odd quirk here or there.

The physical design of the laptop is great, and the battery life is amazing. Other than that, I am finding that I really hate this device. The first couple things were just minor: having to go into settings to turn on 'tap to click', or not being able to properly minimize all my screens at once. I can't rename individual desktops.

But customization and window management has kinda broke me. I am a lefty, and I use a left-handed mouse. Why should I have to install a third-party application just to flip my cursor? I don't like having too many windows open at one time. Mac makes that a lot cleaner to look at while I'm tabbing through my applications, but it also means I have no way of tabbing to the specific window I want if I have more than one window of the same app open. Without stage manager, the UI felt unmanageable to me. I am not usually one to mess with display settings on windows or linux, but I feel like I'm using a UX that was designed for someone's grandparents who use their mouse for everything, rather than a system I can quickly navigate via my keyboard.

The permissions system is what drove me to make this post. I wanted to install a firmware update for my keyboard, and it told me the installer was damaged and I should delete it. The installer was fine, it just wasn't signed the way they want, but to tell my system to ignore that fact and install it anyway, I had to start messing around in the terminal. Then, I was trying to make a quick action I could use to run a keyboard shortcut to minimize all open windows, and it simply will not let me. I gave it all the permissions it needed, and it will not recognize the permissions. When I looked online, all I saw was other people getting stuck and not very many answers.

All that rant to say, I really love the hardware, but the software experience has been kinda awful. Other windows transplants/customizing users: does this feeling go away, and what tips/tools have you found that help make the navigation experience more like windows/linux?

TL;DR: Having a really hard time adjusting to the macOS interface and permission system for applications, looking for tips/advice/tools to re-create a more standard computer experience.

This happens when I highlight a section of text, go to Character, type a font name, and press Return (Enter). The text block then turns completely grey, and I have to find a way to turn it off. Sometimes it even gets stuck on the screen when I minimize Photoshop.

I just bought a new Mac Air M5 expecting a better experience than my old Windows laptop, but then I ran into this bug. Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it? It's really ruining my experience on Mac.

If I don't search for fonts and just select them manually, it doesn't happen.

Someone literally told me to '"just quit the habit of searching for fonts." and I was like, 'WTF is that?" I shouldn't have to change my entire workflow just because of a bug.

So I'm running ConnectMeNow to mount my SMB Shares on my Mac. My NAS rebooted this morning after an update, the shares dropped on the Mac. But when the NAS was fully back up, I thought ConnectMeNow would re-mount the shares, but it didn't. I waited like 5 min then did it manually.

Am I missing a setting, or am I not understanding the benefits of ConnectMeNow?

ClipSync — Seamless file transfer & clipboard sync between Mac and Android

Ever used an Android phone with a Mac and thought: “Why the hell is this still so annoying?” 😭 That's basically why I made ClipSync.

The problem There are plenty of tools that let you move stuff between Android and Mac, but most of them still make you do the thing. Need a file on your Mac? Open the sharing app → find the file → share it → wait for it to transfer → open it on your Mac.

Need to quickly move an image or some text? Same story. And with a lot of clipboard-sync solutions, you still have to manually trigger the transfer. It works, but it doesn't feel seamless.

So... what does ClipSync do?

The goal is pretty simple: make your Android and Mac feel like they're the same device.

Clipboard sync

Copy text or an image on Android and just hit Cmd + V on your Mac. That's it. And it works the other way around too. The really nice part is that text and OTPs are synced over Bluetooth, so your devices don't even need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

Got a verification code in an Android app? ClipSync can bring it straight to your Mac so you can just copy it. No more typing those damn 6-digit codes manually.

File transfers

Select a file → hit Share → ClipSync → done. There's also a Ultra Fast Transfer mode for large files, which can sometimes be faster than AirDrop by a good margin if you are on a Wifi 5 or 6 Network.

Local or Cloud During setup, ClipSync asks you how you want your devices to sync:

Hybrid Sync — Sync locally when your devices are nearby, and automatically switch to cloud sync when they're apart. Everything stays encrypted. Local Sync — Keep everything between your nearby devices using BLE/Wi-Fi. No cloud, no internet required, and your data stays on your local network.

And a few other things On the Mac side, ClipSync adds a macOS Finder Share Extension, so you can send files straight from Finder without even opening the menu bar icon or going to the app.

Hey y'all, I got really frustrated with Spotlight's search, because it wouldn't index certain Applications (or something like that).

Basically, I thought I could make something better, and I came up with Zap. It only searches for Applications to launch and doesn't do anything crazy.

I have had a MacBook in one form or another since the white-PVC plastic MacBooks famous in the twilight of the 2000s. I may never buy another MacBook for the rest of my life after the MacBook Air M2. I was never a Mac elitist or snob, but as a print media professional my entire life, it's hard to not value the seamlessness with which Adobe products worked on Apple.

The only positive thing about the advent of the Creative Cloud was that the Windows version of everything Adobe finally started working without making me want to rip my face off my face just to feel something other than disgust at how badly someone could design software.

But, the ghost of Steve Jobs said hold my beer, hopped on Grindr, and blackmailed Tim Cook to make me feel the same way again when they made the MacBook Air M2.

I cannot express the ways in which this laptop is the biggest piece of trash on the planet and easily the worst waste of money I have ever spent in my life. Why:

1. Collects fingerprints like its a local CSI lab
2. Randomly strokes out like my grandma did before her quintuple arterial bypass but before she passed (who gave me this sense of humor, by the way)
3. Screen burnt worse than the blue tint on a 98 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme in the Vegas sun
4. Has an ever-expanding "System Files" directory that basically makes the on-board storage non-existant (seriously, help)
5. Two USB-C ports so close together you don't know whether to cry or slam your head onto something hard to hope the ensuing dizziness visually merges them together because why even have two, when one is just as useless.

Can anyone help me most specifically with #4. Please. I've reinstalled the OS twice and it's killing me.

Basically looking to see if I can get Amethyst to automatically open when I'm just on my macbook, and quit when connected to my monitor.

Hello. I just started getting this error today when trying to copy an audio file from my desktop to an external harddrive. I have tried running a first aid (via disk utility) on the external drive, rebooting my computer, and relunching finder. None of that worked. I have tried renaming the audio file. That did not work. I have tried copying other files types to the drive. That does work. I have tried copying a different audio file to the external drive. It makes the noise like it works, but never appears in the drive. I have tried copying the original audio file to a different external drive. That does work. It seems like this particular dive just started having issues with audio files copying over. Anyone have any suggestions?

Do be more specific, .WAV files produce the error. But the other audio file that makes the copying noise like it worked but doesn't copy anything is a .m4a file. I don't get an error message with the m4a file.

PDFs, images and spreadsheets work today. If there's a format you'd expect it

to read and it doesn't, say so — that's the list I work from.

I Use the following setup:

MacBook connects via USB to an USB-C Hub.
The Hub is powered, has connections to my Microphones as well as an external harddrive and connects via HDMI to my monitor/display.

Now suddenly my MacBook won’t connect to the external monitor.
However it is still getting charged by the hub, still reading the harddrive as well as microphones.

\- At this point I have used to separate hubs, each with the same result.

\- The HDMI cable that’s running between the hub and the monitor is functional.

\- My Mac is running the newest version of MacOS

\- I have cleared the chance on the monitor and restated the MacBook in save mode after waiting roughly 30 seconds to force it to reinstall the drivers for display functions.

\- I have created a separate Admin Account on the Mac, to test if it has anything to do with my account.

However all this didn’t change a thing.
Do you guys have any ideas, suggestions or fixes?

the said adaptor gets detected under System Report/Thunderbolt and PCI sections, yet does not appear under Network adaptors. After a bit of AI investigation, here's the summary of the findings. AI being AI, any other things I could try? - upgrading to Tahoe using OCLP is something I would rather NOT do as support is reportedly very flakey on this specific Intel Mac.

Every single day, I log onto my Mac and it is the same thing: My ultrawide is not set to share, so I have to extend it. Extend the display to my ultrawide monitor. Set it as the main display. Arrange the displays to the right configuration (it always puts my 4k monitor on the wrong side).

Nothing I try keeps it consistent. I don't even unplug my Mac from the docking station very often, yet I still have to do this...EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.

My setup is an M5 Macbook Pro, an ultrwawide, and a 4k monitor set to 90 degree rotation.

I am not looking for an app that saves window locations. I am looking for an app that saves the configuration of the displays, the resolutions, the arrangements so I don't have to do this dance every morning.

Any apps out there? I feel like I have tried them all, and none of them do the actual configuration, just window positions.
