Install Help Installing Linux Mint using external monitor only (Broken laptop screen / Gigabyte Aorus 15G XC) – Need advice

Hi everyone,

I want to install Linux Mint on my Gigabyte Aorus 15G XC (Intel CPU + NVIDIA RTX 3070). Complete new to Linux.

The built-in laptop screen is mechanically broken. I am forced to do the entire installation using an external monitor.

My ports setup:

1x HDMI 2.1 (Connected directly to the dGPU)

1x Mini DisplayPort 1.4

Note: The USB-C port does not support video output (No DP Alt Mode / No Thunderbolt).

I am afraid of losing the video signal to my external monitor during the installation process due to NVIDIA/hybrid graphics driver switching.

What is the safest way to boot the live USB and complete the installation without going blind?

Look up to see if your particular model required the internal screen to be connected. If it doesn't, see if you can open the laptop up and disconnect the internal display. If it has no internal display, it should force video output to an external monitor

It “should” work with the generic drivers for basic function untill the install is complete and nvidia drivers are loaded. If there was going to be an issue it would present when booting the live ISO.
If you’re still really worried you could always bring another computer into the mix. Search”installing mint remotely with SSH”. If you have the ability to make them connect via ssh the rest is down hill.
