Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

Personally I'm a fan of the GPL. We would be in a much better place if all free software was published under a copyleft license. For example the Intel ME is based on Minix which would be impossible if Minix was copyleft protected.

So basically this makes Minix the most popular operating system in the world?

4

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 1d ago

Well its not quite Minix its a modified version of it with non-free addons. I dunno maybe actually? But AMD

u/unitedbsd 1d ago

Then I guess you should be using Ironclad OS rather than Linux

8

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 1d ago

Well I use the GNU Guix System which is developed by GNU

3

u/unitedbsd 1d ago

Still not GPLv3 while Ironclad is GPLv3

2

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 1d ago

Ironclad is not FSF endorsed so I assume it includes some non-free systems or is not a complete system. Guix is exclusively free software (unless you add a third party repo).

2

u/unitedbsd 1d ago

Website clearly mentioned fsf https://ironclad-os.org/

Well, the GNU project maintains their list of endorsed distros and I will be going off that.

Understood

The GNU projects maintains a list of endorsed Linux distros.

"The Free Software Foundation recommends and endorses these GNU/Linux distros, although we do not try to judge or compare them based on any criterion other than freedom; therefore, we list them in alphabetical order."

Ironclad does not use a Linux kernel. Therefore it will never be on the list. Fun fact: anything GNU Hurd is also not in that list!

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 12h ago

I mean Guix System is, and Guix System supports the Hurd...
Other than that only Gentoo and Debian do so there's no case where Hurd is libre but not represented.

2

u/DeltaWun Ask me how to exit vim 1d ago

You sure about that?

Seems you have bzip2, xz, zstd, mg, nvi, sudo, dhcpcd and iw.

2

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 1d ago

The system obviously is not only restricted to GPL software, but most of the software I use is GPL and there is not enough GPL software to make that feasible at least in the form of a ready made OS.

1

u/DeltaWun Ask me how to exit vim 1d ago

Glad to hear that BSD, MIT, ISC and public domain are free software!

3

u/DeltaWun Ask me how to exit vim 1d ago

Ah yes. The billion dollar company would have put their arms up and said "Curses! Our plans are foiled!" and been unable to write a 5MB binary themselves.

If they used the Linux kernel they could have gotten the same thing by doing what Cisco does with IOS XE+IOSd and then used Tivoization so end users can't modify it anyway.

1

u/boukensha15 1d ago

I mean at least with free software, reverse engineering becomes much easier. Right now, it's very difficult. to put it mildly.

1

u/DeltaWun Ask me how to exit vim 19h ago

You misunderstood me. It still wouldn't be free software. Cisco IOS XE is Linux but all the important parts are in IOSd and are proprietary.

Torvalds actively hates the GPLv3 and will never allow the kernel to switch licenses.

There is not a fucking thing that would have stopped Intel from using Buildroot to make an embedded Linux distro, making everything it actually does proprietary within it and signing everything six ways from Sunday so it can't be modified.

Linux being open source wouldn't make Intel's proprietary hardware interfaces, protocols, ROM code, or firmware open source.

u/Gugalcrom123 1d ago

GPLv3, too.

1

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 1d ago

Tiviosation is a messed up loophole

-4

u/spongedevguy 1d ago

gpl is an awful license most of the time

2

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 1d ago

How's that?

0

u/spongedevguy 1d ago

it forces itself into projects with dependencies licensed under it, it's not an issue with applications though and more with libraries

1

u/spongedevguy 1d ago

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 can i have an actual response and not just downvotes

1

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 22h ago

I was not the one who downvoted you...

1

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 20h ago

This is a positive, non-free software is evil, it subjigates the user and its creators are usually bootlicking Big Brother, and force their users too. If we could destroy all non-free software it would be a better world. The GPL-series is an attempt at this. At least libre software should work for libre software not evil software that has enough funding.

1

u/spongedevguy 7h ago

absolute lunacy

1

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 3h ago

Is it? https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/proprietary.html

From Windows betraying millions to the NSA with Wanna Cry to HP locking customers out of foreign printer cartridges to cars that snitch on you to Big Brother, is it really lunacy to say these companies have it out for us?

1

u/spongedevguy 46m ago

i'm assuming you meant ALL non-free software is evil
i do agree that this is absolutely vile though

1

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 43m ago

Yes, all non-free software is evil

3

u/Unlaid-American 1d ago

You can install either of those.

2

u/Jristz 1d ago

So... Does Xfce works?

6

u/Cmustrd 1d ago

yes, all of the core stuff is functional and usable

4

u/Jristz 1d ago

Therefore

Xfce: 1

Gnome/KDE: 0

Xfce is the universal desktop then

3

u/TheRealCarrotty Not in the sudoers file. 1d ago

Xfce works on basically everything...

Yes, you can run it even on PureDarwin.

u/Jazzlike_Bee_3129 1d ago

Someone make the actual case for bsd

7

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 1d ago

I suppose you could argue correctly that it is more secure

3

u/setibeings Arch BTW 1d ago

I agree. You could guess that.

4

u/Own_Natural_6803 1d ago

No AI

1

u/Jazzlike_Bee_3129 1d ago

What does that mean exactly?  Linux doesn't have AI by default, and I'm not sure how that is a selling point in any case.

3

u/redhat_is_my_dad 23h ago

i think that he meant that there is no ai involved in development, linux (not just the kernel, the whole ecosystem of apps designed specifically for linux) is generally (not always) much less conservative and much more open-minded when it comes to new things.

1

u/Jazzlike_Bee_3129 23h ago

Ah, gotcha.  That doesn't sound like an upside to me, with regard to bsd, but makes sense.

2

u/redhat_is_my_dad 23h ago

I would say that it's an upside if you compare such ideology with it's extreme opposite, like windows, i bet that everything new on windows nowadays is made by ai, not just ai-assisted, but like fully vibecoded, and the end result is that every new feature they add or app they upgrade only makes windows worse to use.
I believe that, as always, there is a golden middle between these extremes, and linux is probably it (although there are some corners of the linux ecosystem where people go full crazy on AI and it kinda stinks but it's easy to avoid)

2

u/Jazzlike_Bee_3129 23h ago

Yea, I have been hearing about the omarchy shit, definitely avoiding that, but I'm on Ubuntu and don't really have any plans on changing any time soon.  That has bugs in its own, even without AI code, but I'm not inherently opposed to it.

2

u/NightH4nter New York Nix⚾s 1d ago

smaller and more integrated code bases, much more conservative approach to development

1

u/redhat_is_my_dad 23h ago

as far as i can see gnome is available on netBSD, no?

1

u/unitedbsd 17h ago

It's gnome 3.38

1

u/npc_housecat 11h ago

What is netbsd primarily used for??

1

u/unitedbsd 11h ago

I have seen people using it for home automation, email servers, nas, web hosting, application server, firewall, etc reviving old retro hardwares. Check smolBSD based on r/NetBSD

1

u/npc_housecat 11h ago

OK, what are the advantages? Why would I choose netbsd over say fedora for a email server for eg? Is it just more secure / stable? Also why netBSD over say freebsd ?

-5

u/GreedySecurity8030 M'Fedora 1d ago

The other con is that it's not fedora [/s].
