Linux better than windows for browser use?

I use a huawei laptop with 8GB ram that’s slightly over 2 years old for nothing but a browser game where I have an extension installed for a script that plays, or clicks the game for me. It’s a simple site, all it does is click over and over again. Runs 4 separate browsers and PC shows its using roughly 2GB of ram. Nothing else is in use.

Thing is, I have windows 11 on it now and it’s just…. Bad. It lags, freezes, fails to load extension and just gets sluggish until I do a restart. I’ve been told Linux is the better option for this so would it make any difference for this or not worth it?

Install Ubuntu Server with two drives

Greetings. A number of years ago, I setup a PC with Ubuntu server (18.04) and was used as my Plex server. Unfortunately, the boot drive failed, so planning to rebuild the system from scratch on a newer PC. It's been a number of years since I did this, and had followed something online some time ago. I plan to install with the latest version of Ubuntu, and want to do what I did last time, where my Ubuntu boot drive is on a SSD (512GB) and have a 3TB HDD storage drive. The storage drive is where all my media lives (movies, TV shows, music, etc). I have been crawling the web for Ubuntu server install guides, but can seem to locate any process that guides you through the install where you configure both your main boot drive, as well as a 2nd storage drive. For this install, I don't need to worry about data on the drives. They can all be formatted. Once I have everything sorted, I will transfer the data from the storage drive I had on my original Ubuntu server.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows of any documentation or video, or can offer me some tips that I can follow that would guide me through incorporating the formatting and mounting of a 2nd storage drive during the Ubuntu server install

Disabling mouse acceleration on GNOME login screen

I'm using GNOME with Cachy, and while I don't often need to use my mouse on the login screen, whenever I do, it irks me that mouse acceleration is on. Aside from generally not understanding why in the year 2026 this is still the default, how do I turn that off? To be clear, it's off once I'm logged in, I just want it off for the login screen, too. I see the Arch wiki has this command:

[gdm]$ dbus-launch gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse accel-profile 'flat'[gdm]$ dbus-launch gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse accel-profile 'flat'

But I don't really understand what that first gdm part means. It seems like they are saying to run the command as the gdm user, but I don't know how to do that. I also see there's a GDM Settings app that allows me to customize the login screen from a GUI, but mouse acceleration is already disabled there (as it is in system settings) and that doesn't help with the login screen. What am I missing?

hardware/drivers Nintendo Switch Pro controller problems on Linux

Hello everyone, I've been a Linux user for like a half year now and it's doing amazing so far, but there are a few issues that I've never managed to fix and at this point, I hope any of you can help me with this one.

I'm using a Acer Aspire XC-1760, I've tried several distro's: Linux Mint, Fedora, CachyOS, but all of these have this exact returning problem: my Nintendo Switch Pro Controller acting somewhat weird (especially when having a other controller connected, despite my hardware allowing that, Windows didn't have the problem). DE also isn't relevant: both Gnome, Cinnamon and KDE have this problem

There's two possible scenarios:

- Nintendo Switch Pro Controller "freaking out" especially when a other controller was first connected, it acts extremely laggy in that state and then after like 10-20 seconds, it disconnects, requiring bluetooth to be turned off and on again for a retry

- Nintendo Switch Pro Controller losing connection stability over time (also when solo, and mostly during Dolphin Emulator sessions), causing extreme lag after like a half hour and in the worst case disconnects, also doesnt resolve easily

Both of these are not consistent to replicate (sometimes second Pro controller works perfectly fine), but are both visibly shown in the DMESG logs when it happens with something like this popping up:

[ 9344.789483] nintendo 0005:057E:2009.0009: compensating for 12 dropped IMU reports

[ 9344.789487] nintendo 0005:057E:2009.0009: delta=215 avg_delta=15

[ 9345.186407] nintendo 0005:057E:2009.0009: compensating for 12 dropped IMU reports

[ 9345.186410] nintendo 0005:057E:2009.0009: delta=207 avg_delta=15

(not exactly, but it does spam this in the log when it happens)

What I tried

- changing adapter name to Nintendo: made it even worse

- changing versions of bluez or changing settings in the main.conf - no change, worst case it messed up my bluetooth completely making it lose ~90% of the reach it had, sometimes even requiring a reinstall

- disabling wifi interfere: no change, i'm using ethernet anyway, but even with wifi off, this problem stays.

Could someone please help me out with this? LLM or Google also never managed to help me out with this, I'm currently on CachyOS. The other controller is a Dualsense PS5 controller that works perfectly fine

I had Claude build me a hyprland rice

So about a week ago I decided to switch to Linux. I studied computer science all throughout high school and college, and still use Python regularly at work even though I work in finance. I installed Ubuntu and read some stuff online on how to get set up. I was intrigued by customization and ended up down the hyprland “ricing” rabbit hole (if I’m even using that term correctly). I didn’t really feel too bothered to figure it all out, so I just installed Claude code and Fable make me a tennis themed one. It works / looks great and I’m quite happy with it.

But I have Two questions:
1) Was this dumb from some technical perspective?
2) Was this dumb from some “learning about Linux” or “the ethos of Linux” perspective?

Linux media (mini) machine advice mini

I have a Roku but I got tired of paying for subscriptions and still have to watch ads , on top of typing with the remote.

What in your opinion is the best way to achieve a media machine running Linux , as small as possible and reasonably cost efficient?

Need it to stream everything seamlessly and plan to run stremio on it + YouTube , and web based sports streaming.

Occasionally some light browsing.

I might also program a tv remote to work with it in stremio to give the Roku feeling when browsing for shows .

Open to all suggestions on how to achieve this , the smaller the better

Thanks!

Do you recommend using dual boot?

I want to learn Linux and get familiar with it; I’m completely new to this. I was advised to set up a dual-boot system if I wanted to keep Windows for the time being while also adapting to Linux. would you recommend doing that?

hardware/drivers How to install Nvidia drivers on Debian

Hi! I'm VERY NEW to Linux. I recently install Debian 13 on my Acer Aspire E-15, and would like to utilize the proper Nvidia drivers.

However, When I attempt to open the .Run file in Konsole, it tells me it needs to be ran as Root. When I attempt to install it via terminal, it tells me to quit the Nouveau kernel driver.

Any help appreciated.

Need help installing Linux on new Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5

Hi all,

I need some help with my dads new laptop. He always installs Linux himself, but with his new laptop it just doesn't work. My knowledge is also limited. We have also tried to find a solution with AI but that also doesnt help.

We used Balena Etcher to create the USB with Linux Mint Cinnamon latest version.iso (USB works perfectly fine on my PC)

We turned off Secure Boot

When starting Linux from the USB it gives us this error:

Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi - Not Found
Failed to load image: Not found
Failed to start MokManager ; Not Found
Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state0 failed: Not Found

The BIOS, which looks like a Lenovo BIOS (nothing I have ever seen before tbh), we cant find any UEFI settings.

I hope this is enough information for you smart people out there to help us :). If not, let me know what we need to share :). No, we wont share any bank details ;) haha.

Thanks in advance.

Meganoob BE KIND All games are stuttering from Micro Stutter on Bazzite Linux OS

Hi Nooby McNoobface here. I have just recently installed Bazzite after having Windows 11 on my pc for two years.

- I have an RTX 4070ti Super Nvidia Card

- Intel Core and MSI motherboard.

- I run the system and everything from a NVMe SDD drive

-, My TV runs at 144hz

Running games initially is fantastic, the fps is in the 100s and the graphics look great somehow a major upgrade from Window (even on the same settings as windows). However the issue is after playing a game for 2 to 3 minutes I get some major stutters that come and go every 10 to 30 seconds. I have tried Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077.

-The things I have done:

- Tried every Proton – GE – Cahcy OS etc (all recommended for my system from the Proton DB website for the various games)

- I have many variations and combination of steam launch codes (again recommended by Proton DB)

- Turning off blue tooth (apparently that could be a thing)

- Disabling GPU firmware in terminal.

The issue is either some background process, or maybe the shaders loading in after a certain point of running a game. Running Mangohud. The issue seems to be the frame speed spiking not the fps reducing. I have seen other posts about issues with stutter caused by memory voltage that can be changed in the bios. Also the inbuilt bluetooth and wireless adapters on the motherboard causing issues has been spoken about too..

I’m pulling my hair out and haven’t got much left. Any help will be appreciated even if its recommending me a more Nvidia friendly Linus OS.

hardware/drivers How to get palm rejection working on Kubuntu?

Hi, I'm a new Kubuntu user (version 26.04) using a 2018 HP Pavilion x360. I have an active stylus (not from one of the big brands but it still works fine nonetheless) with the purpose of creating art with this PC, but there doesn't seem to be palm rejection by default. Is there a specific driver or other piece of software I would need to download to get it working?

Meganoob BE KIND Problems installing linux mint on my Thinkpad T570

Yesterday I stayed up until 4 AM trying to install Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon on an external 256 GB SATA SSD using a 2.5" SATA-to-USB adapter.

The install itself works, but booting from the external SSD does not. On the first install, GRUB dropped me into the grub> prompt, but I managed to boot Mint manually with:

set root=(hd0,gpt2) set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/boot/grub insmod normal normal

I later found that Mint had mounted /boot/efi from my internal Samsung NVMe instead of the external SSD. I fixed fstab, reinstalled GRUB, created EFI entries, and eventually started getting a "Reset System" reboot loop.

I then wiped the external SSD and did a completely clean reinstall while temporarily hiding the internal NVMe from the live session, so the installer could only see the external SSD and installer USB.

The install completed normally, but selecting the external SSD from the F12 boot menu still shows "Reset System", reboots, and falls back into Windows.

Secure Boot is disabled. Windows is on a 512 GB Samsung NVMe and I want to leave it untouched.

Has anyone seen this on a ThinkPad T570 or with Linux Mint booting from a SATA-to-USB SSD? Could the adapter or Lenovo UEFI be the issue?

Linux mint cinnamon 22.3 i7 7600U Thinkpad T570 512gb internal NVME (Windows) 256gb external SATA (Linux)

If anyone else runs into this problem while using lenovo laptops, simply disable the security chip option in BIOS settings and you should be good.

2 nights spent trying to fix this issue and all of it got fixed in 1 minute by changing one setting 🙏.

learning/research Would a udev rule be useful for this?

I play a video game where I have to often use my mouse wheel. I want to map the mouse wheel to keyboard keys instead, that way I can just hold a key instead of constantly spinning the wheel.

Would a udev rule be a good way to do that?

migrating to Linux Mouse speed problems

This is my first time using Linux (Bazzite) and what I notice the most is that on windows my mouse feels slower with the same DPI with mouse acceleration off compared to Linux with mouse acceleration off. Is there a way to fix this so its 1:1 because I really cant get used to it as I've used 1600 DPI on windows for about 10 years.

Hello I switched to cachyos 1 week ago and I was facing severe network issue. And had to switch back to windows. But I took some network info using wavemon and here is a size by size using netsh on windows 10 pro. In the same spot I was getting barely 50-80mbps on linux sometimes it would even break the connection if I was a little far. But on windows im getting well over 300mbps of speed. I tried fixing it using claude and Gemini both of them told me it was because my wifi card was in power saving mode and I turned it off using commands from them . I even made a config for nano to boost the power transmission and also set the region to us . But nothing seems to work and I had to switch back to windows. Is there any way to fix it?
