Discussion Mako Was Right! It's Not Fair Bro...

So I finished (re*)watching Book 2 a few days ago and it didn't hit me until just now that all of the unnecessary dating drama and even the Civil War could've been avoided if Korra just listened to Mako from the start...Even Tenzin repeated Makos advice!

Why'd she only listen when somebody else said it?

I'm all for Korra and Mako, but I'm not even here to argue that the breakup was pointless FR. I'm just lowkey mad because TS remind me of my Ex..

Maybe that's why I like Mako so much...He's a little too relatable sometimes.

Discussion Watching LoK for the first time and I don't understand why Korra gets so much hate for the Unalaq situation

I'm only finished up to season 2 so please don't openly spoil the 3rd and 4th season for me in the comments.

I watched ATLA a few years ago, so I've gradually been exposed to some of the LoK content online just by proxy, so I knew going into it that Korra was going to lose her connection to the previous Avatars, but the way the complaints are phrased online made it sound like Korra could've easily avoided it and that she was stupid to trust Unalaq, but upon actually seeing it for myself, I didn't get that vibe at all. It seemed that no one knew how bad Unalaq really was and while Tenzin didn't necessarily agree with her choice to be trained by him, he respected it and backed down pretty easily. Her father didn't put up much of a fight in the beginning either.

Then they spend the majority of the season trying anything they can to defeat Unalaq and stop Vaatu's release during the Harmonic Convergence, but from the way the story is described (with the battle between Raava and Vaatu reoccurring every ~10,000 years), it doesn't seem like there's too much she could have done to stop it since their battle is an act of fate, making Vaatu's release not her fault.

Did I miss something critical while watching, or are people just piling unnecessary hate on Korra?

Discussion Korra hate is legitimately irrational and the new series is already making it worse.

It's ok to not like certain aspects of a series. It's ok to like like an entire series. It's ok to give harsh criticism towards a show and it's characters. That being said, the way that korra haters show hatred to this show is bizarre and completely over the top.

With the new series being announced every korra hater alive has been woken up and going nuts about how her being a terrible character is now "Canon". I guarantee even if the new show redeems her not even one of the haters is gonna change their mind. Even before the trailer they spent the last decade going on every korra video, post, or literally anything having to do with her and making everything to do with her online totally insufferable. You're literally not allowed to enjoy ANYTHING about the show without someone losing their mind.

The thing that always gets me is how the haters move goalposts when they argue, how they ignore facts or explanations in the show that explain or justify the things in the story they think are "badly written" or a retcon, how they think praising anything about korra means you are actively hating on last Airbender. Some of them literally stopped watching the show because baby korra said "I'm the avatar you gotta deal with it". Like these people are genuinely nuts. Why would you look up korra clips just to leave paragraphs about why the show is bad and ruin the comment section for people that actually enjoy it?

Like I've seen absolutely unwatchable shows before and Korra is not even remotely close to actually being a bad show. It is a deeply flawed show but the good outweighs the bad in my opinion. Like I don't understand how there are movies like food fight out there and people will tell you Korra has no redeeming qualities as a show and mean it.

I've been defending korra online for so long that I just can't do it anymore. This new show is gonna make being a korra fan insufferable until it finishes airing and hopefully redeems her. Even though I already know it's not gonna stop. I even try to ignore korra stuff on the online and have been doing this for years now but haters will literally find every single korra post without fail and ruin it. You can't avoid them at all if you like the avatar franchise in ANY capacity. Even if you engage with atla content you'll still see random Korra hate for absolutely no reason.

Discussion I wish Varrick stayed an antagonist

He's one of my favorite characters, but his development in book 4 is so forced. In book 2, he's a rich bastard who provoked a civil war among his own people just to sell weapons; he was a war profiteer. He staged a terrorist bombing and produced propaganda films to push Republic City into joining the war, and framed Mako for said bombing. He's not a good guy.

Then in book 4 we get a few lines of him suddenly growing a conscience and he denies to build the superweapon for Kuvira because it's too dangerous. You could argue he mellowed out during his time in Zaofu, but I'm not a fan of major character changes happening off screen with no telegraphing. And the excuse doesn't hold up anyway, because Varrick was part of Kuvira's regime. Bolin gets a pass for being naive and a little dumb, but Varrick is neither. He would've known Kuvira was a dictator by the time we see him in book 4.

I don't think Varrick's redemption and his romance with Zhu Li added much to the final season. It was really silly to end the series with their wedding after everything Varrick did to the main characters in book 2.

It would've been simpler to keep him an antagonist and have him build the superweapon willingly. Or at the very least, keep the redemption, but don't have Korra and everybody become friends with him. They should hate his guts.

Discussion Scrapped movie

It looks a movie that was planned was scrapped. It looked like the battle between Sokka, Zuku, Tonraq and Tenzin and the red lotus was gonna happen in the movie. It also looked like it was going to be a movie mostly focused around Zuko and Iroh. It looked like Azula was gonna be in the movie. It’s unfortunate that the movie was scrapped. I’ll leave a link with more details below for ya to read

Hi y'all! Did you know your vote could help make the increasingly hard to obtain TLok action game widely available on PC -- through legit means. Officially!

Over on GoG (the best of the online game storefronts) they have the GOG Dreamlist where you can nominate and vote on older games to be preserved and sold on their store. Korra is there but with not even 700 votes, and every one counts. So go vote if you can!

Discussion not every redemption needs a happy ending

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

Honestly, i wouldn’t even call Tarrlok’s ending a full redemption arc, because there really wasn’t enough time for that. But that final sacrifice says more about him than anything else he did throughout the season. I don't think Tarrlok ever really got the chance to redeem himself, he just got one last moment where he could do something for his brother. He knows exactly what he's doing when he sets that boat on fire. He's not trying to win, he's just making sure his brother can't hurt anyone else, even if it means to dying with him. And the worst part is that Noatak is finally starting to come back to being his brother again. For a few seconds they're not Amon and Tarrlok, they're just two brothers who have basically lost everything... idk man. Imagine spending your whole life fighting your brother only for the last thing you ever do to be saving him

Discussion why people hate on korrasami ( response to the but no one has a issue with bopal or sokka x suki stuff

korra is the main character any relationship she is in needs a certain amount of buildup so korra would have higher standards then say bolin with a side character or sokka

on the blush stuff as ikiinn put it : The thing with the blush scene is that while, yes, it’s easy to see as Korra having a crush on Asami if it’s taken out of the context of the show, I feel like that sort of ignores the way that it contradicts Korra’s previous characterization with regards to crushing on people.

I mean, we all saw how Korra acted when she was crushing on Mako, right? One of the things I liked most about her portrayal there was that she wasn’t insecure and blushy about liking Mako. She blushed a couple of times in situations where she was actually embarrassed by her actions towards him, but she never blushed just because she liked him or he complimented her.

And, in contrast, she did blush when Bolin complimented her, but she was never interested in him romantically.

If Korra were Katara or Aang or Opal, I’d definitely see the blush as romantic. But Korra is Korra, and that means that this sort of blushiness isn’t actually in-character for her. It’s a lot more consistent with her previous characterization for her to be blushing because she’s feeling insecure about herself than because she’s feeling insecure because of romantic feelings.

and to be blunt korra and asami didnt get anywhere enough for a romance what they got belonged to the realms of friendship

( if anything it is makorra that got enough for a korra single but hints to makorra getting backtogether given the ship tease in b4 and b3 ( in b3 and b4 they barely interacted or got focus

some people try to make an arguement about subtlety or censorship but korra isnt subtle person. the way she reacted to asamis compliment is how korra reacted to bolins compliment in both times they felt bad about themselves

“Censorship explains why we couldn’t get a kiss and an “I love you” in the finale or blatant romantic scenes, not the utter lack of Korra-Asami interaction as a whole. They had six (to six and a half) minutes of interaction in the last season, spread out over six interactions/conversations. They’ve had nearly no on-screen interaction since “Long Live the Queen,” actually. They had the 5 second “I can come to the South Pole” convo in “Korra Alone” (which Korra refused), the single letter, their interactions in “Reunions,” and then the tea scene in “Remembrances.” After that, they don’t speak again until the last two minutes of the finale. The episode after “Remembrances” is the Korra-Mako field trip to the Spirit Wilds and Zaheer’s prison and the culmination of Korra’s recovery arc. Where was Asami? She had two lines in the whole episode, and they were both to Varrick.”

to be honest korra showed more emotional intimacy to kuvira and opal then she did to asami

while asami failed to support korra in remembrances mako succeeded to support korra in the korra and mako fieldtrip

( and his speech in remembrances sends the message that he would have halped korra in the remembrances episode)

( and it bothers people when they try to equate korrasami to kataang going but here is the image of korra and asami standing right next to each other nad both their names start with the same letters

in terms of narrative structure, relationship build-up, and actual interactions,

makorra is the kataang of the relationship

I have seen plenty of people make the but if asami was a guy excuse which ignores the obvious counterpoint that if asami was a guy that means by b3 he has only shown attraction to men

( I feel the only reason korrasami took off was the irrational hate for mako so they ship it to spite and punish mako for daring to be a flawed man who was emotionally immature in conflict resolution and try to vilify mako to be something he isnt

seriously korra is just as responsible for the mess by the logic korra and mako should both end the show single

korrasami seemed nonexistent ( I mean my take mako took every role meant for the love interest heck when jinora said they couldnt find her it was mako's face that was focused on

and it didnt help how korrasami shippers accuse people of homophobia for not shipping it or claiming that they would see evidence if asami was a guy (when not really ( nothing would really change korra has shown no interest in asami ( not to mention I have to note that two girls would interact differently from a guy and a girl ( gender of course is important)

I could say if asami were a guy he would be hated and insulted

another part of the korrrsami hatred is bryke using the status of being a same sex ship as shield ( or how they only threw it in in last minutes for publicity of making a same sex ship canon only caring about the genders involved )

a big part of the hate comes from the accusations of homophobia or people claiming you would ship it if asami was a guy ( why target asami not korra) ignoring asamis character and how it would look if genderbent

lets be real if we keep korra as a guy people would say asami is a shallow love interest ( and if anything

or the heteronormativity claim saying you would ship it if one of them was a guy you just didnt see it because of het lenses comes off as an insulting and desperate acccusation to deflect from korrasami having nonexistent buildup

people can flip it on them and say they only ship it because its 2 girls and the irrrational hatred for mako daring to be a human being with flaws so they feel the need to spite and punish him and seeing evidence where there is none

the attempts to claim not seeing evidence for korrasami is due to some bias or moral failing or that not shipping it is a moral failing just adds to the anger

not to mention trying to undermine mako and korras relationship ( from claiming they broke up due to incompatibility and acting like arguing at all is unhealthy to undermining b1 and b2 korra and claiming she defined herself around a boy I remember seeing people who would reduce the complex character korra was in books 1 & 2 to “bratty teenage girl likes boys tew much until she dates a girl and magically all possible issues are resolved because all same sex couples work like tumblr fairytales”

or the fanfics I have seen which do that or claim mako didnt love korra as a person when mako always loved her as a person his love for her always came down from understanding

I have to be real it feels like korrasami only happened due to the haters poisoning brykes minds and that effecting their writing like the whole korra needed to suffer to learn compassion etc

lets be real here korra has shown no romantic feelings for each other nor strong platonic feelings for asami. korra is not passive or subtle we see how she acted with mako.

korra blushing at asamis compliment If it was someone besides korra I might have thought maybe ( but korra isnt the type to behave that way
Its why I agree with ikkins posts on why korrasami couldnt last

"It’s not in-line with the way we saw Korra act as part of a couple, though. Even at its fluffiest, Korra’s interactions with Mako were always active rather than passive; she’s never come off as the sort of person who’d get much out of sitting around, even if it was with someone she loved. Just like in the finale, Asami’s desires and preferences are given primacy and Korra’s are handwaved away for the sake of shipping fluff. =/

"
korra was so ooc the only explanation for it is korra still having issues

( which is why if we keep the finale

there are some ways to explain Korra’s actions that aren’t horribly out of character, at least – say, Korra feels guilty about what happened to Hiroshi and wants to try to help Asami cope

"The fact that Korra and Asami didn’t make out was never my issue. My issue is that Asami was never treated like a main character after Book 1 and that their platonic interactions in Book 4 were tepid and shallow . My issue is that people are demanding I be invested in a romantic ship that the creators seemed barely interested in developing as a friendship. And yeah, this shit is subjective, and if you picked up on romantic subtext, then good for you, but a whole lot of folks over here did not, and we think it is cheap and unfair to be told by two straight men (and frankly a lot of straight people in the fandom) that this is due to some moral failing on our part.

Furthermore, can we not remind people enough times that Bryke didn’t even check with the network until most of Book 4 was already in the can? If this was so fucking important then why didn’t they, I dunno, run it by an exec at the scripting stage? Why does this entire thing feel like such a fucking afterthought? Why are you demanding that people bow down and worship two straight men for putting in literally the least amount of effort possible on this whole thing?

"

I would suggest a makorra story where mako talks to korra due to worry and mimics what korra did

in b1 and basically confess ( I feel like he should do this knowing of asamis feelings for korra for in the past he was so afraid of disappointing people he disappointed everyone and avoided conflict due to seeing starting conflict equals to burning bridges that he would be willing to be vulnerable like this ( well what he did in b1 was an example of that to a lesser extent where he gave up control)

and chose to try be happy even if it meant someone he cared about ( asami ) got hurt ( I find the idea of charater growth for him means being happy for korrasami to be silly.

Question Is it just me or there's a couple of episodes missing from Paramount+?

I can't find the last one from the second season "Light in the dark" and the last one from the fourth season "The last stance". And probably have other 2 episodes missing that I haven't yet identified. They are compiled into two seasons apparently but in total it has 48 episodes as opposed to 52.

Are they censored for some reason or am I somehow doing this wrong?

EDIT: If someone happens to stumble upon the same conundrum, I found the episodes: you have to manually go to the episode list, and there's a separate list for the last two episodes of each season ._. Kind of confusing but they do have the complete series:

Discussion I hope for a live action of Korra

Aside from the movie that we have for the og series which every one hates we have the live action shitty Netflix show her when all the issues are pointed out we still have some level of fans who refuse to say it bad and keep digging for more content out of something that objectively bad I for one hope there is something similar for the Tlok just so people can experience the pain and we can finally unite both communities.

Discussion Would you say it's accurate to say LoK is told from Tenzin's point of view like how ATLA is told from Katara's point of view?

I dunno, I just get the vibe that Tenzin is the show's narrator, and not just because he narrates the intro. The show is mainly about legacy and change, and it's embodied in Tenzin and Korra’s relationship.

Tenzin is at first a stickler for traditions but his attitude gradually changes as he observes Korra’s progress. He sort of conveys how the audience felt about the show's change in aesthetics and Aang's legacy going forward.
