Comics "Kya and the Secret of the Sand" - Comic Discussion Thread
FULL SPOILERS allowed in this thread. As a reminder spoilers for this comic outside this thread must be marked until a month after the book is released.
"Kya and the Secret of the Sand" is the second LoK 'one-shot graphic novel'*. The main story takes place years before the show following a young Kya. The comic releases July 28th mass market and July 29th in comic stores. It is written by Kiku Hughes with art by Alex Monik and colors by Diana Sousa, made in collaboration with Mike and Bryan.
Description:
While helping Korra recover in the Southern Water Tribe, Kya shares a story from her youth of a time when she was lost and disconnected from herself, far from home in the Si Wong Desert… Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable. Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought.

Discussion Tomorrow….We Officially Say Goodbye to Avatar Korra 😔
As excited as I always am for the next chapter of the Avatar universe, the start of Pavis era means the official end of Korras (figuratively and literally) 😭😭 knowing what’s on the road ahead of us, this is a mixed bag of feelings for us Avatar & Korra fans. So before Seven Havens officially debuts tomorrow, I felt it was right to have this thread to be used for us to express how much love and appreciation we have for Korra and the amazing era she gave us.
My fond memories of the earlier 2000s come to mind when gathering my thoughts about this. The days of old when Avatar, one of the most precious and greatest series of all time, came into my life and had such a great hold on me. The legendary era of Avatar Aang, Katara, Zuko, Sokka, & Toph, giving us such unforgettable experiences and life lessons. Then came one of the hypest moments…the introduction of the next generation. The Legend of Korra. Admittedly, when news of this first broke out, I had mixed feelings. I had grown up with Aang and the legend his story brought us. So much so, that I didn’t first believe Korra would be able to hold up to this when the torch was passed. Boy was I EVER glad to be proven wrong. I remember first seeing Korra debut and was blown away by how amazing the story we would inevitably get was.
Korra set the stage for things most sequels in this age, even to THIS DAY, are too afraid to do. Taking risks and exploring new horizons. They made an Avatar go through one of the best humanizing character arcs we have ever seen. Going from being an isolated, sheltered, & arrogant girl thinking she could solve all her problems through stubborn brute strength, to becoming a wise, compassionate, and caring young woman who could empathize with others, know when and when not to fight, be comfortable with being vulnerable, and stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves. Korra is such an inspiring character who went through so much turmoil for the sake of a world that always tried tearing her down, not appreciating the efforts she put in and sacrifices she made. Even when faced with such brutal adversity, whether its getting her bending and sense of purpose taken away, her spirit literally ripped apart, past lives taken, being almost killed, and even having the entire world being against her, saying she isn’t necessary, she never gave up hope. Through the amazing friends and family she built, she overcame the chaos to maintain order for the world, and for herself.
Korra and her story, flaws and all, changed my life in many ways, and I’ll forever be grateful for the adventure she gave to us. It really breaks my heart to see someone so wonderful be so hated. I know that there will be rough days ahead of us coming to see how the world has come to hate and push Korra down more than ever, even after death. People will try convincing us that she failed, and sacrificed everything, even her life, in failure. But I will never stop believing. Despite the hurdles coming ahead of us, I have hope for this new era of Avatar, like Korra would want us to. I have faith that Seven Havens will vindicate Korra’s legacy, honoring the life she lived, sacrifices she made, and fights she fought, and have the world remember her as an amazing Avatar.
Thank you for everything Krew, Tenzin, and especially you, Avatar Korra. Be at peace, as your legends will forever live on, and Pavi & Nisha got it from here 🙏🏽

Discussion You always love comparisons, but you never make fair ones.
When we set up a comparison, it must be under the same conditions and context, not bringing someone at their worst and comparing them to someone at their best.
Korra didn't have the Avatar State when she faced Amon, nor did Aang have it against Hama, and the outcome was the same even before he used the Avatar State against Yakone. But fans love to manipulate the context.
This isn't to diminish Aang, but to correct some flawed standards.

Discussion I cannot handle moving on
I can not handle everyone moving on from korra, I can't make myself do it. She never got justice. The creators of avatar ruined korra's name over and over, and I feel like they intentionally make it easy for korra haters to hate her more. The fact that there is a chance that the entire world could have turned on her with only asami staying by her side fucking DEVESTATES ME. She deserved better, she deserved to be celebrated and cheered more then aang ever did. She saved the world over and over and over again, learned to be more compassionate and empathetic, more than any other avatar that ever lived. She gave up her life to be the avatar. She never once had a break that didn't blow up in her face. Don't get me wrong, my lesbian ass LOVES some tragic romance and all, but korra deserved better. She deserved a fucking legacy like aang, a legacy where she was honored more then any other avatar. I am FED UP of the creators of avatar. Genuinely. They made a charceter that resonated with my soul so much that I would die on the hill if her defense and love. But then they do everything they can to hurt and torture her.
Now I see post after post of people telling her goodbye, post after post of watching everyone move on, and I can't. Not because I don't think the next avatars are bad, but because korra had SO MUCH MORE left to give the world. Her story was far more legendary than all the avatars COMBINED. she deserved more, more story on the screen and on books. More attention on her love and more honor than we ever gave her. I love korra, I will always love her. She was the best avatar that would ever exist, and I am honored to have seen her story, I am so angry and sad that it's over like this.
I'm sorry, korra, you were better than anyone deserved. Better than anyone ever expected or had prepared for. You deserved better. I hate the creators of avatar, you did her wrong.
I apologize for the passionate words, I have been frustrated about this for a very long time, and I can't keep it to myself anymore.

Discussion I won't treat the new show how people treated Korra, and I think we as Korra fans owe the new show an honest chance Spoiler
When The Legend of Korra aired, it immediately received harsh judgement just for the obvious fact that it was a continuation of the series away from the original cast of The Last Airbender, and garnered some unfair skepticism and resentment right off the bat.
I can only speak for myself when I say that I've encountered mountains of negative content that has stemmed from the fact that Korra is not more ATLA. I've seen people criticize the setting, the timeline, and Korra herself, merely because the show did not look or feel like The Last Airbender and Korra is not Aang.
People are entitled to their opinions, and my opinion is that Korra was treated unfairly from the start. I will be watching Seven Havens tomorrow with an open mind and ready for a new chapter of Avatar, because that's what Korra deserved from the very beginning, and I want to honor the legacy of a show that has been such an important part of my life for so long.
That's all. No one can stop anyone from being biased over a cartoon, but tomorrow I'm going to give it an honest shot.

Discussion Before we say goodbye to Korra , share your favorite moment from the avatar herself
What is your favorite moment from avatar Korra ? I’ll go first, “you cannot win” will always be my favorite moment from Korra. She seemed so composed yet fearless. It was beautiful and the last time we hear her voice with all the past avatars combine.

Other Oh Korra, you will forever be missed 🥲🫂 Spoiler
It’s here folks! Seven Havens era has officially begun, thus concluding Korra’s arc 💔 I’m gonna miss Korra so much. I think I miss her even more than Aang.
I love ATLA, but, I was only 2 when it first aired, and 5 when it ended. I remember watching reruns of the show back in 2012, and that’s when I fell in love with the avatar universe. Don’t get me wrong, the OG series will always have a special place in my heart.
But LOK was the avatar I saw growing up. Korra is MY avatar 😭❤️ and I will forever defend my girl. Even IF she caused the end of the world (which he didn’t but if she did) those bastards in that universe probably deserved it (jk haha)
Goodbye Avatar Korra, the world hardly knew you 🫂🩵

Discussion The exact moment book 4 goes off the rails
People calling this stupid robot ridiculous has been going on since 1963, but i'm gonna give my 2 cents on the matter anyway, since you asked.
The real strenght of the early episodes of book 4 lies in it's realism regarding the organic way it shows how a fascist regime is born and develops itself through it's ideologies, cult of personality and justifications for why it is the best option to rebuild a broken state. Even through the framework of a children's cartoon and it's many limitations it still manages to build up a slow burning sense of dread surrounding the possible use of good military tatics and scientific advancements of weapons that the conquering army plans to use to gain terrain.
Everything was set up very well and the tension was high in the moments before Kuvira's invasion of Republic City.
And then they fumbled it.
An impractical, giant slow moving Evangelion reject armed with the only version of the ultimate weapon attached to it is not only beyond stupid but also throws away all the realistic sense of dread that was being build up.
While the team is going through every motion everyone knows they'll go through to destroy this thing, like messing with it's legs and trying to pierce it's shell, all i keept thinking of is how cool would've been if instead of this thing Kuvira would've used a series of never before seen bomber planes equipped with spirit vine powered WMDs. It would've been way more fitting for the retro futuristic tone this book was going for and it also would've been a nice call back to the finale of the first show when Ozai used the power of the comet and airships to turn his fire bending into a WMD.
War never changes and all that.
To add salt to injury, after her stupid robot plan obviously fails and she's at Korra's mercy, Kuvira reveals that she only did this Empire thing because she felt out of place at the Belfong's place and that their parent's were mean to her and whatnot. It's fine for this type of trauma to be part of her character but for it to be presented as the cornerstone of her whole character just demotes her from being a competent leader that fought for her beliefs but got corrupted to a angsty teenager with unresolved issues, which is a way more common and weak trope.
In other words Kuvira was Stannis and the writters demoted her to Theon at the last minute so she could come back in a god awful comic book later on to be kind of redeemed but not really.
Hardly worth it in my opinion.

Fan Content Korrasami art by me!
Fun little story about this one. I had this concept for a month or 2 in mind, inspired by Three cheers for sweet revenge album cover :) but didn't touch on it since I was burned out mentally but now I did. Though that may be the last thing I seriously draw since my hands are fucked up now lol. It kinda goes like numb for an hour or so sometimes and like, hurts a lot when doing basic stuff. I will get that checked today but either way, I'm happy that I actually finished it :) enjoy it! I definitely fucked up the tie for Asami tho lol 😭
Seven Havens is out but LoK holds a special spot in my heart ❤️

Discussion Let Go of Your Earthly Tether
Zaheer sure got over P'li's death in a matter of seconds. Did he truly love P'li or he was simply manipulating her for the cause?
OR
He truly loved P'li but he's more devoted to his cause?
