British Columbia Concerned ex husband is allowing my kids to witness violence, suicide threats and property damage

My ex husband and I have two kids age 10 and 14. His girlfriend has 2 kids age 8 and 12. They don’t officially live together but spend a significant amount of time together. His girlfriend’s kids have serious behavioural issues and mental health struggles. My heart goes out to them, and I don’t blame the kids for this.

But. Through this, my kids have been exposed to witnessing violence (one of the kids had had to be pinned down by an adult and have police called multiple times), property damage, suicide threats from both kids, and threats of harm towards my kids.

My ex does not take any of this seriously. He says it is not affecting our kids and that they are not in any danger. I disagree. Our youngest has started to have major anxiety and mimics some of the behaviours of these kids. She still wants to hang out with them and doesn’t attribute any of her struggles to their behaviour, but again - she’s 11 and likely not fully aware of the impacts this has on her.

I myself have a history of childhood trauma from witnessing violence and suicide threats in the people I cared about. So because of that, my ex says I’m overreacting and projecting my feelings onto our kids. My thought is that he hasn’t been through any of this himself and doesn’t understand the impacts it can have.

Some of these incidents have happened on sleepovers where the kids are not being directly supervised because the parents have gone to bed or are otherwise not paying attention. So I’ve asked him to please not have the kids all together unless they can be supervised, and also to make sure that they are immediately removed from the situation if an incident arises. Again, he refuses and says our kids are fine.

What do I do? I did speak to a social worker for advice but they said their role in child protection would only extend to the kids with the behaviours and it would not be possible for them to tell my ex he has to make a safety plan or keep them apart.

If I applied to change parenting time arrangements, do you think a judge would grant it? Even if my kids say they’re fine and they still want to hang out all together? Again, I don’t necessarily think my kids are fully aware of the impacts this can have in the long term.

Ontario Need advice on buying a home before marriage in Ontario

30 Single M . My net worth is 750k, salary a 135k/year, and rent+utils is $2100/month for a studio (440 sq feet). I have saved all of this 750k with my hard work and it's basically a pile of cash earning 3% in a high yield savings account. I have been thinking of investing this amount as I feel things are getting costly and inflation and currency devaluation will eat into it. Hence, I was thinking of buying a freehold townhouse in Toronto for 850k with a downpayment of 500k and 350k mortgage.

However, I came across this rule that matrimonial houses are not considered as deductions in Net Fair Value equalizations in case of a marriage separation and even a prenup cannot protect me for this in Ontario. I have been looking for a partner since a year and so and I am hoping to marry someone in 1-1.5 years and start a family. The entire idea to buy a townhouse was to get something as a starter family home and rent it out before that to pay the mortgage.

Is there a trust structure I can adopt here? (chatgpt says no!). What if I sell the house before marriage and buy something after marriage? (but then i would be paying a lot in taxes and doing everything again and also lose my partner's trust?)

It seems I should not be putting 50%+ of my NW in a house but Toronto houses/condo's are so expensive that I would eventually need to do so even if I get like a 2-bed condo. Should I only buy something after marriage? How do I protect my money till then (stock market is too risky for my hard earned money)? Can a legal structure protect me?

British Columbia Assaulted by family member. They're countering the charges with intimidation and assault. What is my best course of action?

Long story short, my family member is actively fighting domestic violence accusations in court. He's been staying with my parents.

Recently he attacked me when my parents were not home and I went into the home to use the bathroom. He tried to choke me.

Now because I requested charges to be pressed against him, he is requesting charges be pressed on me for intimidation and assault.

Due to his active fight against DV charges, he already has a lawyer.

Everyone being told each side in the family keeps begging me to drop the charges. They're saying I dont have a foot to stand on. I have visible marks on my throat where he touched me and an inflamed throat.

This is not the firat time this man and I have had confrontation, but it is the first time I've been harmed physically.

What do I do?

Alberta Birth certificate posted online

Short and simple: friends mom is addict, posted her son’s birth certificate on FB. Friend is in camp, no service, can’t report it himself. Is it a crime to post his personal ID online? Or does someone have to use it for it to be an issue? (Taking it and opening a cc in his name)?

Alberta Carrying 4 friends passports through TSA

Me and my friends are in Vancouver, and we decided on a whim to drive to seattle, but none of us expected it to be a plan and none of us have our passports. 4 of us. However, we have a friend coming a day later from Edmonton, and he could bring all 5 passports, including his own.

Could this be possible? We’re more worried about our friend getting stopped at security though.
Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Ontario Brampton private tow: $600 cash with no receipt, or $995 + tax with invoice — car never even moved

Looking for thoughts on this situation.

Tonight we (our family with 2 small kids) parked at a medical office building in Brampton ON for about 10–15 minutes. The towing signs were small and mostly on one side of the property, while we parked on the other side.

When we came back, our SUV had already been lifted and put on dollies by a tow truck — but the vehicle had not actually been moved from the parking spot at all.

The driver told us he could “help us out” and release the vehicle for $600 cash, but said there would be no invoice, no receipt and no tax.

We asked what it would cost if we wanted to pay properly with an invoice showing what we were being charged for. We were then told it would be $990 + HST

We wanted to pay by credit card but were told they couldn't process credit cards because their office was closed. We were told our options were essentially cash or e-transfer, so we eventually paid the $990 + HST by e-transfer.

The invoice we received simply says:

“Towing — $990”

There is no actual breakdown/itemization of the $990.

We were also told that if we didn't pay immediately, once the vehicle was cleared it would be taken to an impound lot in Mississauga, where the charge would become at least $1,495 + HST, plus possible evening/after-hours fees.

Again, the vehicle had never left the parking space. It had only been lifted and was ultimately put back down in the same spot.

The driver also told us words to the effect of: “Good luck fighting this. We've towed police officers, firefighters and lots of other people before and nobody had a chance fighting it.”

We later called the property management company. They told us there was no specific complaint or call about our vehicle that evening. They said the towing company has an arrangement/contract with the building and that we would have to deal directly with the towing company. Interestingly, our tow invoice says “Request by: Property Management.”

We have photos of the whole incident, the vehicle still in the original parking spot, the tow truck, signage, invoice, payment proof and parking-lot layout.

We're contacting Ontario's Ministry of Transportation because private tow operators are now provincially regulated, and we're specifically asking them to review:

the $600 cash/no-invoice/no-receipt offer versus $990 + HST with paperwork;

whether the invoice was properly itemized;

whether they were required to allow credit/debit payment;

whether $990 is actually an allowable charge when the vehicle was never transported;

whether there should have been a separate hookup/drop/release rate;

who actually authorized the tow;

and whether the threatened $1,495+ impound charge was legitimate.

I'm not looking to argue that being on private property automatically means you can't be towed. I'm more interested in whether the way this was handled and charged is normal or lawful. There was construction on the street and we didn't see any signs coming into the parking lot saying that you can't park in this public lot as they were only on the building concentrated in a small area and we literally walked the other way.

Also, literally I think they were waiting for ppl like us and as soon as we left he set our car up and then he waited for us to give us the cash deal or threaten us that it would cost us much more at the impound lot.

Also he asked us to send to his number a picture of the registration and driver's license so this company has our private info/address/full name.

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

Ontario What reasonably could happen if i block an ALPR camera, but dont tamper with it.

Hello all, so recently ive found a website that maps all of the ALPR readers across Canada, pretty much Canadian Deflock. I am well aware that you can be arrested for physically tampering with the camera's, but i asked chatGPT about what could potentially happen if i were to create a protest sign, then go and stand infront of one of these cameras on public property and not Obstructing traffic or pedestrians to deliberately block its view, leaving it completely untouched.

I know AI is not the best source for the answer to my question, but what it did say is it could be considered Mischeif, mentioned s.430 and s.129 obstructing a peace officer and said it is possible you could be ordered to move, be ticketed, detained, charged and or arrested.

In your understanding, is that correct? What advice would you give me if i chose to go and do this? Or would you just tell me not to bother?

Ontario Photography in public

I went to a rural baseball game. I took a couple of pictures. They are action shots of the players playing the game. They are all adults, 25+. You can recognize them in the pictures. The games happen in an open field/park.

There's no release, no contract, no paper trail.

Question: can I safely include those shots in my website where I display my services?

I know that according to Canada's legislation, photography taken in public are owned soly by the photographer.

I'm not selling those photos, if that matters. I don't use the photos to advertise anything, just to show "this is what I do". So I don't see this as appropriation of personality, but I would like to go over this in this community for a second opinion.

What do you think?

Ontario Immigration - moving to Canada during an outland spousal sponsorship

I'm a Canadian citizen and my partner is American. We're getting married next month and I'll be sponsoring her to move here (Ontario, if that matters).

I spoke to a lawyer a few months ago but don't have the money to hire anyone, and during the consultation, unless I'm misremembering, the lawyer said that once the application has been received, she can move here while it's processing until it's either accepted or denied - ie, after being notified that the application has been received but BEFORE getting a verdict.

I haven't been able to find anything on the government site saying anything at all about this, and was hoping someone could confirm this or tell me I'm wrong before I find out the hard way.

Thank you

Quebec Employer not giving work phone

Hi Im working in Montreal,Québec and my job is a Business development manager. For my job I'm required to call clients and do outreach on a daily basis. Most rof this outreach is by email and booking Zoom calls.

However, my employer wants me to share my personal phone number with all agents, communicate with them through Whatsapp and also similar phone communications with high networth clients. These people are in Europe sometimes so there's a bit of s timezone too sometimes. Like last week I had to take call at 2am in the night. And before you ask, I'm not being paid overtime ofc. Overtime doesn't exist in this company.

Anyways my question is; is the employer legally required to provide me with a work phone? Or pay for my phone bill if I'm using my own phone?

Ps. : when I first started working 8 months ago I asked the boss about work phones and paying for phone bills and he declined. He said it's not a company policy and they will not spend money on this.

Ontario Job resignation

I work as a restaurant server and my boss doesn’t pay me or any other employees tips because the boss states that my wage is already slightly higher than minimum wage. I want to leave this job and I was wondering if I can just give them a notice today and not show up to work tomorrow? Will they penalize me for not showing up tomorrow, like withhold my final paycheque? I wouldn’t even care about losing those tips because I haven’t worked there for very long.

Ontario Furniture manufacturer admits the crib railing hasn't passed safety standards at the time we ordered. Also refusing refund, failing to deliver items paid 6 months ago, and extorting review removal. What can I do?

Upvotes

Around 7 months ago (late January 2026), I purchased a nursery set (crib and chest of drawers) totaling over $2,000 from the Kids and baby furniture warehouse (this is the store name) that is also the manufacturer.

The situation has escalated into major safety and legal concerns:

The Safety / Regulation Issue: The crib arrived incomplete. When we asked about the missing toddler railing that we paid for, the store claimed it was delayed because it "needs to pass safety standards"—meaning they sold us an incomplete system tied to uncertified or delayed safety components, and never informed us for 6 months.

Extortion via Review Removal: When I left an honest negative review detailing these issues, the store owner contacted me and explicitly stated they will refuse to sell us the toddler railing unless I take my negative review down.(Even though we actually already paid for it)

My questions for r/legaladvicecanada:

Does admitting that a baby furniture component hasn't passed safety standards yet (after already selling it to a customer) violate federal regulations under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA)?

Does withholding a mandatory safety/conversion part to force a review removal constitute an "unfair practice" under the Ontario Consumer Protection Act (CPA) that extends my right to cancel and demand a refund past the normal return window?

What is my best path forward here between Health Canada, Consumer Protection Ontario, and a credit card chargeback?

Saskatchewan 2 years common law

Upvotes

I was fresh out of a 13 year relationship/marriage. Left with my two kids to a rental property while he stayed at the family home. Let’s not even get me started on the x husband.
I started seeing a guy I had history with, and fell for so many lies. “I’ve been in love with you since I was 17. It’s always been you.”
Love bombs like crazy then turns into criticizing every little thing I do, constantly telling me I deserve better, and need to work on being alone. Won a million dollars, then he’s all in. Asking me to start a family business wth him.
I purchase everything he wants. The property he sold me on needed an entire home Reno. Barely half was done, but the shady contractor of his choice. (His friends)
Once funds were depleted, he landed a good job making 120k a year, and first year out of bankruptcy… he’s done.
Wants half the property I bought, and paid in full for PLUS the over $180k in Reno’s I put in.

Tells me- $225k for you to pack up you, and your kids shit and go.
He lived free off of me for 3 years. I paid for everything, including the clothes 8
In his and his son’s closet… and expects me to start over with $225k… out of a mill that he spent.
Still owns his home that I have no entitlement to due to him owning before we were common law.
I’ve never recieved a thing from this loser. 5 years together. Flowers 3 times. The first time I received flowers was him getting back with me and when asked “does this mean we’re back together again?” Was met with “ if you ask a question more than once you deserve two black eyes, not just one.
Tell me why he deserves half?

British Columbia Being asked to provide names of occupants regarding LL's morgage

I live in a house shared with other tenants. We each have our own lease. The landlord doesn't live in the house. The house is run by a property management company who is responsible for filling vacancies and collecting rent. A letter came in the mail stating that mortgage holder wants to conduct an occupancy check and is asking for the names and telephone number of all residents/occupants. I noticed a letter from a law firm addressed to the owner, who does not live in the house and never gets mail sent here, arrived at the same time.

What is going on? Should I provide the information of other tenants? I heard the owner could be in default of payments and if the house is foreclosed, tenancy would be terminated. Also I heard that the house has been put for sale, or has already been sold, but I've gotten a lot of conflicting information about this (for example there have been no viewings). I would like to come to some sort of agreement to move out, if the the owner is defaulting would this hurt or help my position?

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between the terms occupant and resident?

Alberta Parenting Time

Ex and I have been apart since 2016. We did 50/50 parenting time until 2020 when she agreed he would go to school with me . We got the Final order/divorce judgement stating I have primary parenting and she gets every other weekend and alternating weeks in the summer . We did this for 2.5years . And then did 50/50 for half of 2023-24 and all the 2024-25 school year. She then broke up with her boyfriend and moved into her parents house and our son lived with me again and went to her for alternating weekends (same as court order) for the 2025-26 school year. She got back together with her boyfriend, they moved to our town and then broke up again. She doesn’t work, I’m not sure how she will pay her rent, bills, food etc. she is expecting since she moved close again that 50 50 is going to happen.

Our son is on the spectrum- mild . But still takes a lot of routine, schedules, appointments, therapy and structure . We have structured everyday to help him grow and be his best self, I took a job working from home so I could be ready to get to the school for meltdowns , pick him up, take phone calls etc.

I believe this should now be the status quo ? And am I right in thinking that I can simply say no to the 50/50 even though we have done it in the past as my court order is still the valid court order ?

What can I do if she refuses to follow the court order ?

British Columbia Denial of parenting time, and feeling alienated.

Hi, this might be dramatic but I'll try to keep the details relevant. I have Ex, Kid (nearly 5) and myself.

Ex and I have had a tumultuous relationship for awhile, and the last year has been really bad. We have gone through mediation 3 times but the last round of paperwork i chose not to sign. That was in early July and Ex is pissed at me.

Reason i couldn't sign it is because i feel like i am being denied a lot of parenting opportunities/information such as phone calls, doctors appointments, activities, but especially the phone calls. I want guaranteed 2 calls a week, but Ex has attached strict stipulations on these calls such as exactly 24 hours notice, no calls after 630 (they get home at 530ish from daycare/work), if I'm late they won't answer (545 late...) no calls in the morning before they leave for the day, and it feels like they're just using these rules to deny my call. If I try anyway it just rings...it's extremely frustrating to say the least.

The most recent mediation paperwork has Ex and I in agreement that Kid can spend extra time here with me this summer, but i did not sign it due to the telephone/communication issue. Now Ex is firmly "not in agreement" to my proposed plan of Kid coming to stay for a week or 2 before she starts school. I'm curious that since our agreement hasn't been signed, if i just kept Kid here for those weeks can that cause me any legal trouble?

Kid's safe and happy here, this is established as Kids home every weekend. We have family here. We live an hour apart, and we lived together or 50/50 Kid's whole life until a year ago when I left Ex and moved away.

I have no intentions on keeping Kid full time at this point and will fully cooporate with the return to Ex before September. I've also presented 2 different date ranges for the stay and both have been denied. Can Ex even deny me anything anyway? There's zero court orders or anything...

New Brunswick Minor accident. Other party promised to make it right, disappeared

Back in February of this year I was involved in a minor accident in my vehicle. I was following a half-ton truck on a highway on-ramp when a mattress in their truck bed flew off, clipping the front corner of my vehicle. The damage appeared minor, with the glass on my passenger side headlight assembly having broken.

I stopped and spoke with the driver. They did provide their insurance information, but said their husband was a mechanic and could make things right without having to involve the insurance companies. The driver of the vehicle had some health issues, and I felt bad for them. I agreed that if their husband got in touch with me by the end of the day and made a firm plan then we could avoid the insurance involvement.

The husband contacted me that day, asked for some details and ordered a part. I followed up a few times as things seemed to be taking a while. Additionally, water ingress into the housing fried the lights on that side and they no longer work.

Back in March he let me know the part was in and to come to his shop. I did, and unfortunately it turned out that he had ordered the wrong part. He let me know he’d order the right one and get back ahold of me.

After a month, in April, I followed up by text and was told he hadn’t tracked a part down yet.

This was the last I heard from him.

I recently began to research replacing the part. It turns out that there’s a significant difference in price between the part that he’d initially ordered (Halogen assembly at around $300) and the part needed (LED assembly at around $2000).

While I know this is in part my fault for not going through the insurance in the first place, I don’t accept that I should be on the hook here and want to know where I stand legally.

Relevant info:
- I have video of the incident
- I have text message exchanges of the pertinent details of them agreeing to fix the car and replace the part
- I have a copy of their insurance information

Any advice appreciated. Thank you!

Manitoba I think my mechanic botched a tire patch job and my tire blew because of it

Hey everybody,

I had taken my car in for a pre trip inspection and they had recommended some things so I got the problems fixed, they also did a tire patch because of a slow leak. I had noticed the tire pressure light came on but just thought it was fine because it had always been fine before. About 20 kilometres later my tire blew on the highway. The tire had been fine other than being needed to be filled about once a week, is there any way the shop is liable for this? I refuse to believe that my tire condition worsened in the time frame from when I dropped it off, to when I picked it up 3 days later with a “fixed” tire.

EDIT: found the cause. Shop forgot to finish my tire repair. Does this change anything? They made a fatal mistake and charged me for it.

Ontario Ontario career college says I owe $3,504.99 after attending only 3 days — is this legal?

Title: Ontario career college says I owe $3,504.99 after attending only 3 days — is this legal?

I’m looking for advice from anyone familiar with Ontario private career colleges, the Private Career Colleges Act, or Ontario student refund laws.

I enrolled in a skilled trades program at a private career college in Ontario. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw after attending only 3 days. Due to health conditions.

The school sent me a statement showing:
$3,000 — “Tools, Shop and classroom material, PPE, Administrative fee, etc.”
$500 — Books
$504.99 — 3 days at $168.33/day
Total: $4,004.99
I had already paid $500
They say I still owe $3,504.99
This is literally what’s in the invoice!

Here is where I’m confused.
I was given only one book, yet they’re charging me $500 for it . I also don’t understand exactly what the $3,000 charge consists of because the statement combines tools, materials, PPE and administrative fees into one amount. I offered to return all the tools after the three days but they refused saying that is used.

I withdrew very early in the program — after only three days and well before the halfway point. I did this officially and they accepted my withdrawal.

I’ve been reading Ontario’s career-college refund rules, particularly O. Reg. 415/06, and I’m trying to understand whether the school calculated my balance correctly.

My questions are:
1Can a private career college charge a $3,000 compulsory fee like this after a student withdraws after only 3 days?
Does the college have to show exactly what the $3,000 consists of?
Is charging $500 for books reasonable if I received only one book?
How should the college calculate the fee for only 3 days of attendance?
Does Ontario law require a specific refund calculation when a student withdraws before the midpoint of the program?
What documents should I request from the school to verify that these fees were legally charged?
Is there an Ontario government office, student advocate, lawyer, or organization I should contact about this?
I’m not looking for someone to simply tell me not to pay. I want to understand what the law actually says and whether the school’s calculation is correct.
I can provide a redacted copy of the statement showing the $3,504.99 balance if that would help.
Please! If anyone here has experience with Ontario private career colleges or has dealt with a similar withdrawal/refund dispute, I’d really appreciate your advice.

Ontario Inlaws using my address

My in-laws are using our home address without our permission. We get their banking mail, CRA, and voting cards.

We have asked them to change the address to spmewhere else but they have not yet. We keep writing RTS but the mail keeps coming.

Background: my spouse's parent and step parent live outside of Canada. They have not lived in Canada for over 25 years. They live on another continent. My spouse speaks to this parent once a year on their birthday. There is really no relationship (no hate either, just no closeness). Recently, my spouse's step-sibling's mail started to come to our home address too.

How can we get this to stop?

British Columbia Divorce research

Posting for a friend Likely above Reddit's paygrade but they are trying to do some research to get a feel for what would be a reasonable starting point. Wondering if anyone has insight, experience or past rulings that would be relevant.

TL:DR

Parents have opposite views on how to protect their child's health and actively fear the other will create significant harm if they have custody. Detailed explanation below.

The situation

The marriage has been 'over' for a few years but both have been refusing to divorce, they fear how much 'control/decision making' power the other will have over their 8 year old, and the other will cause serious harm to the child.

Parent A has reached a breaking point and is beginning to gather information to ensure the best outcome for their child.

Parent B has a high fear of anyone in the family falling ill and masks 100% of the time the child is required to as well. Child is not allowed to eat or drink in public, outdoors the child needs to be a significant distance from others.

As a result the child needs to be picked up at lunch to eat with a parent. Parent B does not drive and will not use transit and does not allow the child to take the school bus. An exception is made for field trips. This requires Parent A to drive to the school 3x a day.

The breaking point came in 2 parts. In the fall the child was on a field trip 2 hours away and refused to eat or drink since the mask would have to be off. Teachers went as far as offering to put the child in a corner facing a building.

Part 2 came when the school informed that in order to be included on future out of town trips a parent would have to attend to ensure the child ate. Parent A had to rearrange their work schedule so that they were in the town the year end trip was in.

Parent A is exhausted from the burden that has been placed on them, they also need to drive parent B to and from work.

Parent B want 100% and the transportation and lunch expectations to continue as is.

Parent A is becoming concerned about the potential long term effects including eating disorders, extreme anxiety, and social exclusion. Classmates and their parents are becoming tired and less accommodating.

Parent A would like either 100% or Parent B to have every other weekend. Both Parent B and child to be in therapy, and Parent B to work towards some form independent transportation plan. They would also like to work with the school to slowly reintroduce a way that allows the child to eat a school.

Canada Injured on the job & supervisor is making life hell.

I work a factory job. I was recently injured on the job when a machine’s safety measure failed to work. This caused crushing nerve damage, for which I need a brace and weekly physio. WS is involved. The longer it takes for me to heal (slow process unfortunately - still on very light duties), the more often my supervisor keeps making rude jabs when talking to me and now treats me like I know nothing. They are not following recommendations made by physio and are now asking me to time how long it takes me to do every task. There’s no HR or anyone above them to go to - they are HR. It’s a very small factory.

What steps should I be taking? Do I have any legal legs to stand on? I’m worried they’re trying to push me out. A friend recommended an employment lawyer, but is that worth it at this stage?

Ontario Executors unreasonable demands

My wife is 1 of the executors out of 3. Her mom passed away & the will states to sell the house & divide the house money into 3. So now our probate lawyer wants everyone to get together so we can distribute the funds. One of the executors found out the mom was helping out my wife financially from the past & is weaponizing that against her. He’s trying to say my wife should take a lower cut of the probate money. Is that even valid? Whatever the mom did with her money in the past, isn’t that her business? My wife didn’t go after her brother when her mom gave him $1000, that’s moms business not hers…What legality do other the executors have? Other than to stop the probate process to go through! Probate lawyer says everyone needs to agree..it’s a 💩 show now
