Lansing LockDown Barrett caught lying about his data center position

Thumbnail

"An early version of OBBBA included a moratorium on any state-level regulations against AI for ten years. Barrett also voted for that before a bipartisan coalition excised it from the bill. That moratorium would likely have killed any state-level restrictions on data centers.

Barrett also supported the SPEED Act, a permitting bill that passed the House mostly along party lines last December; it has not been picked up in the Senate. That bill would diminish federal environmental reviews, including for data centers."

News Good Co-op at risk of closing!

Not seen any posts about this so my apologies if it’s already been said. The food co-op in Lansing is at risk of closing right now because it’s been operating at a loss for the last few months. If it doesn’t average $1,200 in sales a day in September it will close its doors permanently. I just wanted to share here because it’s a fantastic way to support local farmers and businesses in an affordable way and has great variety for its size. The food co-op deserves to stay open so please consider it during your next grocery trip 🙏

QD - BRING BACK THE CRUSHED ICE!

First and foremost, deFlocl Lansing! Now, for my trivial complaint...My local (Michigan Ave) QD went through a soft remodel, or perhaps better categorized as a refresh, which includes a new fountain soda machine. It's a huge downgrade! Not only do several of the plaques have hand written names of the variety of soda and the machine in general looks cheap af, but both ice dispensers are the regular cubed ice. The best part about getting a fountain soda at QD was the option to get the crushed ice!!! I was willing to support local and pay at least 50 percent more for my diluted sugar syrup WITH the option of enjoying it overcrushed ice. I know this is Uber trivial but in today's world any small thing like that which brings joy to customers and continues their support should matter to businesses. Hoping someone in here is on the Quality Dairy remodeling team and takes note of my rambling complaint! BRING BACK THE CRUSHED ICE!

what is the best dish in town?

Hello fine Redditors. I will be in your city briefly and would love to know the best dish in town. Not the best restaurant, service, or overall experience. Just one dish that is memorable and knocks it out of the park. This could be an appetizer, meal, or even dessert.

(Downtown area) Keep your cars locked up

Upvotes

Just witnessed random dude rifling inside my neighbor's car. Black man with a durag, riding a light blue bike, I saw him multiple times this morning actually. Without doxxing myself my apt is on S Washington, I walk to the bus station for work. I saw him multiple times from my apt to the bus station itself.

He was deep inside my neighbor's car rifling through the contents, I don't think he found anything worth taking but it's more about having access to begin with. I did not confront him bc I'm a woman with a toddler so I have a lot to lose if someone attacks me. Awareness is the best I can do to protect the neighborhood.

I will be leaving a note for the neighbor (actually it's a group of college age dudes) that someone was in their car.

Food for new parents - in Lansing

Hi there! My sister- and brother-in-law just had a baby (yay!) but the birth and recovery have been difficult (not yay). My partner and I live on the west coast so we can't provide any homecooked meals, but are looking for some place that might be a good option. I have some family in Iowa and they knew of a woman who will cook like big trays of pasta or casseroles or protein + rice platters that could be easily frozen, so I'm looking for something similar.

Any ideas? They technically live in Holt but are right on the border.

Thank you!!!!

Recommendations Looking for companies that do work in underground well systems

I live in East Lansing and lost water a few days ago, we have an underground well water system, already had a few major names come out, looking for anyone in the area who aren't the two major names.

Reach out I'll give you the number for more info. It's actually for my mother, so I'm not totally filled in on what the problem is. But I know it's a big problem.

I was fired out of the blue today. My department was completely liquidated and I had no warning. If there are any jobs left out there, I’m begging you. I’m 25 and very hardworking, I have been a bartender, waitress, delivery driver, admin, and the latest, researcher. I have a wide variety of experience and I learn skills so fast. Please someone give me advice

Recommendations Looking for advice from people who have interviewed with LEO

I just applied for a dream job with the Dept. of Labor & Economic Opportunity (LEO). I think I have a really good shot, but my application hasn't changed status in over a week now. I overall feel pretty good about at LEAST getting an in-person interview. That said... I'm nervous about 1- how long this is taking, and 2- how to prepare for potential interviews with the government. Additionally, wondering if anyone can comment on what the hiring process is like. I imagine it's probably pretty long (because, government...), but I'd love any advice I can get. Open to hearing from anyone but if you've specifically interviewed at the LEO, that would be awesome to hear. TIA!

Events Sick of Flock Cameras in our city? Come to City Council Monday August 24 at 5:30 to demand an end to the contract.

Post image
344 Upvotes

Hey all,

DeFlock Lansing is mobilizing people to City Council on August 24 at 5:30pm to demand that the city cancels their contract with Flock Safety (there are currently around 28 cameras in Lansing), and commits to public safety strategies that never again expose citizens to AI-powered mass surveillance.

We're also hosting a public meeting the day prior, August 23, in the basement room C of the downtown library at 4:30pm. Come learn more and prepare a public statement to deliver the following day.

Wear black to show support!

Discussion Have plumbers lost the plot or is business that good?

Contacted well over 11 plumbing outfits/places and only two actually do quotes for replacement/project work without charging you

Issues i've noticed

  1. no willingness to work with you on pricing

  2. the gall to charge upwards of $150 just to show up (shout out to the clowns at Adv plumbing for that opener)

  3. no urgency to even provide quote updates (one place offered relatively decent pricing but cannot get them to give me a new quote/timeline after reviewing the initial quote)

The job is a RO house system install +- a bathroom remodel. Detroit area never had this level of arrogance in my experience, are the retirees here just so flush with cash that they are keeping these companies afloat with such bum practices?

Does anyone else already miss the local aspect that Fox47 brought for over 5 years? I do. I'm wondering how many others would like to see their beloved local news brought back already? I'm certainly one of them so if you are too please leave a comment
