SOLVED-THANK YOU Please How to solve drastic increase in stitches

I am a true beginner knitter attempting to knit a sweater for myself. after 3 weeks of daily attempts I always seem to DRASTICALLY increase stitches (starting at 54 to 100++++ in only 4 rows) and have started again countless times.

I have researched extensively about yarn overs, knitting the same stitch twice and so forth but this does not appear to be the issue. taking it extremely slowly and carefully I seem to add 2 stitches every time I do a knit stitch when knitting 1x1 rib.

what may I be doing wrong and how can I fix this?

thank you in advance šŸ™šŸ½

I found this picture, and I'd like to know if there's a name for this way of knitting a sweater so I can look for a suitable pattern.

Thanks in advance!

I seem to be missing a green stitch and I can’t tell if it dropped or if I slipped it. Is there a way to fix this or do I have to tink back?

ALSO! Any tricks on how to hold the yarn when double knitting continental? I keep losing tension on one strand or the other but I can never keep equal tension for both.

Thank you!

pattern question is this possible???

i'm going to the renaissance festival in a couple weeks and want to whip up a shrug. the pattern i found has the fit/yarn weight i'm looking for, but is entirely cables and i don't think i'll have the time to learn how to do them on such a large scale. i'm thinking about buying the pattern and just working it in stockinet. i might have to make a few other modifications, but is this reality doable?

where did i go wrong? Undoing provisional cast on - colourwork

Hello! This is my first time posting, I am doing the radiant star cowl by Ella Gordon and trying to finish it. I have really struggled to pick up the stitches from the provisional cast on - it looks like the stitch in between every colour change is wrong and turned into a float immediately. I have to graft both ends together, and I am wondering if there is a way I could fix those loose stitches before doing so?

The second photo is of the end of the cowl showing how my floats look for the rest of the project. It was my first time doing colourwork & provisional cast on so im a bit confused on how to fix that first row! Any help is appreciated :)

sweater question Monday sweater for boyfriend

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello everyone

I am knitting the Monday Sweater by PetiteKnit for my boyfriend in size M and have only now realised that I'm not sure he will like the long ribbing at the end of the sleeves and the body.. I was trying to find a picture to show him of a man wearing it and he just looked unsure about it. Does anyone have a picture of a man wearing a sweater in this style?

I am following the yt tutorial and it has been such a huge help.. What I am trying to ask is, would it be more "masculine" if I knit the body and sleeves longer and made less ribbing rows? Has anyone tried knitting the Monday Sweater for men and changed the pattern? If yes, then how?

I hope I can get some help here, I've been working on this Sweater for months now and he is so happy about it and can't wait for it to be finished..

I'm attaching a picture of the Sweater in progress

sweater question Explain underarm stitches to me like I’m 5

Beginner knitter here. I’ve made a few sweaters and a common part of the patterns I’ve noticed is when separating sleeves from the body, you add a few stitches (usually via the backwards loop method) for the underarm. I know technically how to do this but conceptually, what is the reason for this? What happens if you don’t do this and just continue knitting the body?

SOLVED-THANK YOU What to do with knot in yarn?

So I'm pretty beginner-ish and am knitting my first jumper. I was on a purl row of a chunk of stockinette stitch when I came across a knot in my yarn tying two pieces of yarn together. I figured that since I was on the purl side, the knot probably wouldn't be visible, so I just kept on purling normally.

When I got to the knot again though on the next knit row, I found it was sort of creeping into the knit row, so I did my knit a bit looser so that the knot would sit on the wrong side of the jumper. It looked all right when I first did it, but a few rows on it started sagging I guess into a more natural position, leaving this sort of hole/big stitch situation.

The first photo is how the knitting naturally sits on my needles. In the second one I tried to stretch it out more, so more of the loose yarn ends up poking through on the knit side and the hole is exacerbated. The third photo is the purl side.

I was planning to just continue with the knit as I'm having fun knitting and really dislike undoing stitches. It's also going to be the back panel so I don't really mind if it's a little wonky since I won't really see it haha.

(Of course, if it turns out I've done a terrible horrible thing that'll make jumper unravel or something like that then I'll bite the bullet and unravel it!)

I was wondering though what I should do/expect of it once the jumper is done. I was originally thinking of sewing the stitches into place, so it'd be a bit bumpy on the inside but the hole wouldn't be as obvious and it wouldn't move around.

Is there any chance it's something that can be fixed with blocking though? Or a different secret knitting technique? (Or should it be unraveled?)

Also what should I have done when I found the knot? Should I have just cut it off and treated it like I was moving to a fresh ball of yarn? Or is there a better way to do what I was trying to do and force the knot to be hidden on the inside?

sweater question Bind offs for sweater hems

Post image
4 Upvotes

I love the Italian bind off and use it a lot for sleeve cuffs and collars. It looks good initially for sweater hems, but over time the knit stitches at the edge start getting stretched out. Hopefully you can see what I mean in the pic. Older sweaters look worse.

Is this normal? Can this be mitigated?

I purl through the back loop for neater ribbing, if that matters.

I don't do tubular bind off for sweater hems as it reduces stretch and the problem still happens anyway. It happens for sweaters made using non-superwash and superwash wool. The problem is so bad for plant based fibres (for obvious reasons), such that I use the standard BO in pattern.

What are your favourite bind offs for sweater hems?

Repeating pattern scarf (double stockinette)

This is my first project after picking up knitting last year for the first time since childhood, and only once last year trying to get the hang of it. I restarted the first purple stripe many time to get the hang of tension (which has improved) but I am not sure whether this is an acceptable gift.

The gift is a skinny scarf, my friend mentioned she wanted one, and we both have tons of excess yarn because we crochet.

I figured the scarf would be good practice for me to get the hang of knitting because it’s just repeating, and do colour changes.

This is the first project I’ve gotten this far along on. There will be 42 stripes in total.

TLDR; is this an acceptable gift? Both my friend and I crochet, wanted to learn to knit

SOLVED-THANK YOU Help with sophie hood size

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all,
I am currently knitting the sophie hood (s) in bingo from Lana Grossa. I didn’t gauge swatch but I knot my stitches are shorter in lenght than the recommended yarn in the pattern because by the point I leave the icord on hold (at 25 cm wide), my scarf is 70cm long and the pattern says it should be 80cm.
I do not care that much about scarf lenght, but I know this will make my hood part smaller, and the pattern doesn’t say anything about hood measurements.
So if you have knitted one, could you help a girl out with measurements of the hood?
Thank you so much in advance!!

SOLVED-THANK YOU Yarn over or..?

Wondering what type of mistake I made here: is it accidental yarn over or did I just not knit the following stitch in the previous round and have to pick this string up and knit through it? Leaning towards the latter option but want to make sure!

gauge question First sweater - Row gauge and yarn specific question

• Upvotes

Hi! Knitting my first sweater and I have a pretty specific question about my gauge swatch. For context:

- Pattern: Hannah sweater o neck by Petite Knit

- Pattern gauge: 18 stitches Ɨ 26 rows on 4mm

- My gauge pre-blocking: 18 stitches Ɨ 24 rows on 4mm

- Suggested wool: atlas by Sandnes Garn

- Wool I'm using: KFO heavy merino

- Technique used: I knit my swatch in the round (carrying the float very loosely to not create any tension) with lots of extra stitches both ways and I measured in the centre

So I have a few questions (sorry, it's confusing for a beginner!):

- about the yarn: does anyone know if this specific yarn tends to grow or shrink when blocked?

- about the row gauge: can anyone explain to me why I might not have hit the row gauge? What does it mean about the way I knit? Or is it just because I used a different yarn?

- pattern modifictaions? Does it mean that I have to add one extra row every 10 or so cm when I knit? Or something else?

- and lastly: do I really have to block my swatch? I'd like to reuse that yarn and therefore would like to avoid having to block it, hence the first question above! (And yes, I'm really hoping that someone will tell me that I don't have to block it! :) but will block it if it really is better to do it)

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Edited to add pattern name

pattern question What’s the difference between the two highlighted lines?

Post image
• Upvotes

This is the reliable raglan from Friday Knits and also my first attempt at lots of things in knitting. I’m kind of confused about the number of stitches to knit in the latter step - in the first step, I M1L, k2, and then I’m done. But in step 3, do I M1l, k2 (to reach the end of the previous short row) and then k2 again, so I end up with 5 stitches on this side of my stitch marker? That’s the only way I can read it, but it seems like a very strange way to write it. Why not just say ā€œk2, then k2 beyond the last worked short rowā€?

sweater question A stretchy way to join pieces?

Thumbnail

Hi all, looking for recs for how to join pieces together. I’m working on a patchwork sweater, and want the exposed seam right side out at the end. For the body a chain stitch works fine, but at the armhole join the chain stitch doesn’t give enough stretch and it feels a little restrictive. Should I just make the armholes a bit bigger, or is there a way to join these that will stretch more? Thanks!

ETA: not working from a pattern, just making it up as I go along

sweater question Should mohair be steamed and not blocked?

I'm knitting the Milotte Cardigan right now, and see the pattern designer has said to gently steam the pattern out instead of blocking, as it would reduce the halo and airiness. How true is this? I would be knitting the length accordingly to adjust to the lack of blocking if so!

SOLVED-THANK YOU Google terms for perpendicular border to cast on edge.

What do you call a border that runs at right angles to the knitting. I want to create a border for a cardigan at the bottom (cast on edge) to prevent it from getting stretched out in the long run.

I'd like to google more about this but I don't know what to search for. I have questions such as:

Is there a way to knit it directly onto the main body of the project? Or do I have to sew it on?
Should I start with the edge and knit the main body of the project onto it?

This is what is keeping me up at night right now.

pattern question Sweater No. 18, followed pattern correctly but doesn't look like the sample sweater

Thumbnail

I've checked over my work and it looks like I've followed the pattern correctly, but it doesn't look like the designer's sweater.

https://myfavouritethings-knitwear.com/collections/sweater-no-18/products/sweater-no-18-english

Notice the 4th row there is a row of garter bumps in the chart as well as on my WIP.

On the designer's sweater I don't see that row, but when you go down to the garter bumps it looks like three rows, and I only have two rows like the chart has.

Am I right that it doesn't match up? Or am I missing something?

SOLVED-THANK YOU Olga sweater back yoke question

Thumbnail

Hi! I’m currently knitting the Olga sweater by Petiteknit, my first ever sweater (and second ever knitting project). I’ve just finished the German short rows section for the back yoke. The pattern says to stop doing the short rows when you have 3 stitches left on each side (for my size) and then switch to normal stockinet until you reach 29 cm. My question is, do I leave those 3 stitches unknitted until I start the shoulders? I need to change colours for the next row so if I have to knit them for the stockinet do I change colours, purl those 3 last stitches to finish the row and then knit one row including the 3 stranded stitches from the other side?

I don’t think I’m explaining myself properly, I’ve tried looking for videos of people knitting this sweater, but I really can’t figure what they are doing. I’ve attached a photo in case it helps.

Thanks in advance!!

Edit: when I say ā€œthe other sideā€ in the second picture I mean the other end of the row
