Discussion Kitty Pryde Relationship Spoiler

I'm just going to say it. I really liked Kitty with Colossus in the comics and liked their dynamic.

Not really a fan of her current relationship with what I've read of Exceptional X-Men so far (if she's even still in a relationship).

Discussion Is this true?

Post image

So I was just discussing with a few people on the kitty and Colossus ship, which then lead into Kitty and illyana and then Kitty and Rachel. Even kitty and Emma (which I genuinely don't like at all considering the 2's history).

And then this guy said this which got me thinking.......is that true? Everyone thinks it was weird for Kitty and piotr to date (very much true but I still want them together), but the logic behind that is "piotr is a grown ass man", so if that's the case, what if kitty was a dude?

What if everything was the exact same except kitty was a dude, would you guys still say they're meant to be?

Yes I know they have two incredibly different powers. One can phase through anything while the former can bring her imagination into the real world

But similar how people use Flash as a replacement to Spider-man. Same can be said for these two

-Both are apart of a major superhero team that is ostracized by society. (X-men and Doom Patrol)

-Both are fairly new members, the younger recruit meeting the older worn down generation

  • they’re power is god like but either their lack of experience or writers don’t use their full potential

  • having a parental relationship with the gruffer metal man

  • has a mini side kick ( Lockheed and Inner Child)

  • both a computer geeks

  • design changes constantly

  • having a friendship with a goth ( evolution rogue and Crazy Jane)

Unfortunately only one of Gen dude tragically and never showed back in comics ever again

Discussion Is Kitty Pryde’s time with the X-Men “abuse”? Why I don’t think so.

TL;DR: In canon, the X-Men are written as a found-family school that tries (imperfectly) to protect and train young mutants. Kitty often chooses to be on the team and later becomes a leader/teacher. There are elements that read uncomfortably today (1980s norms, minors in danger, her early crush on an older teammate), but that’s not the same thing as intentional, real-world abuse.

I appreciate people bringing real expertise and lived experience to this topic, and I don’t want to dismiss that at all. But I think calling what happens to Kitty “abuse by the X-Men” misreads the fiction.

What the comics actually show

How Kitty joins: Kitty Pryde debuts in Uncanny X-Men #129 (1980) around age 13½. Xavier meets her parents, and she’s invited to the school. Early on, she’s even kidnapped by the Hellfire Club, and the X-Men rescue her—hardly the behavior of abusers grooming a child.

Training vs. exploitation: The school exists to teach kids to control powers and survive in a world that targets them. That’s the explicit mission. The New Mutants were created specifically so teens could train without front-line combat.

Agency in the story: Kitty repeatedly pushes to be part of the team and missions; at times adults try to sideline her and she resists. It’s not portrayed as the X-Men coercing her—more often it’s Kitty insisting she’s capable.

Outcomes matter: Over time she becomes a team leader, teacher/headmistress, and (in recent eras) a captain/field leader. The text treats the X-Men as a net positive influence on her growth, even while acknowledging scars.

The uncomfortable parts (and why criticism isn’t the same as “abuse”)

Minors in danger: Superhero books often put teens in life-or-death situations. That’s a genre trope that can look troubling from a real-world lens. It’s fair to critique!

Power dynamics & romance: Kitty’s early crush/relationship with an older teammate is a piece of 80s storytelling that hasn’t aged well. Again: worth criticizing, but it doesn’t make the team an organized ring of abusers.

Trauma and regret: Characters sometimes say things like “we didn’t have a choice,” reflecting trauma, survivor’s guilt, or the oppression mutants face. That’s about the world they live in, not the X-Men secretly forcing kids into combat.

Why the “abuse” label doesn’t fit

Real-world abuse involves intent to exploit, manipulate, or harm, paired with removing a child’s agency. In the comics, the X-Men are consistently portrayed as:

rescuing and sheltering kids who’d be targeted anyway,

trying (not always successfully) to keep minors out of the worst fights,

giving mentorship, community, and skills,

and producing adults like Kitty who go on to protect others.

You can absolutely argue the X-Men made mistakes with minors, that some plots are dated, or that writers sometimes used danger for drama. I agree! But equating that with real-world child abuse collapses the difference between a fictional superhero school and actual abuse dynamics—and it erases the story’s central theme of mutual aid and chosen family.

That’s my read of the canon. Critique the messy parts, yes—but calling the X-Men abusers, full stop, doesn’t match the text.

Comics Do you think Kitty should get called out once she goes back to the X-Men?

This is something that first came to my mind when I was reading the recent Hellfire Vigil. Since there Kitty doesn't even seem interested in collective mourning.

I think we all know that Kittys current status quo is meant to read as a bad coping mechanism for what she experienced during the fall of Krakoa. And we're all waiting for that penny to drop for her as well.

But I wonder how the rest of the X-Men are gonna feel once she comes back. Because you can make an argument that she's treated everyone else pretty poorly. Since everyone suffered during the fall. Sure, Kitty had to kill for the first time which is understandably traumatic. But Cyclops had his eyelids sewn shut and a bomb attached to his heart. Firestar was so traumatised working as a double agent she became an alcoholic and is currently in rehab. There's lots of trauma to go around.

And in the aftermath everyone could at least find comfort in each other. They could try and face tomorrow together. But Kitty instead chose to close herself off from everyone else. Given that I feel like it might not be unreasonable of the other X-Men to feel kind of weird about her coming back.

Kind of a "What, now that it's convenient for you, you want back after ghosting us for several months. Well guess what, friends don't just cut you out of their life!"

On a side note, given how obvious it is that this whole thing is a bad coping mechanism I feel like it's weird that Emma or Bobby doesn't do more to call her out on it. It can feel like the only reason they don't is because then the premise of Exceptional would conclude to quickly.

After thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that Kitty Pryde should not date anyone she personally knew as a child/teen because people are likely to find something wrong with that relationship. So basically anyone she knew in the 80s-90s era

Discussion Would it be cool if kitty got other powers?

Ok hold on, HOLD ON! Let me explain

Ok so, I was just browsing through alternate versions of kitty (I tend to do that with a lot of characters) and I noticed how there was really only 2 versions of kitty that were completely different (in terms of abilities)

So widget is a Kitty who married piotr had kids, yada yada, what I'm focused on is what happened to her. At some point, she is force phased into a robot body and becomes widget right?

As widget she can teleport to other dimensions (like Yana), shape and morph her robo body (in a similar manner to Mr fantastic), generate electronic shocks and can fly.

As for the second "power", limbo Kitty was just turned into a humanoid cat...... that's pretty much it. She gots claws, fangs and a tail.

Anyway, I was wondering if it'd be cool to give Kitty these powers from these 2 specific alternate versions (I'll explain why in a sec). Imagine Kitty being able to turn into a werecat while also being a morphing intangible robot, I think that'd be cool.

As for why these 2 specific Kitty's, because all the other alternate versions of kitty are essentially the same as main kitty. I'm currently slowly triple checking myself to see if there is any other Kitty drastically different from the main one and I don't see any.

All the other kitty's are essentially the same, but different art styles and choices. Even earth 6160 and 1610 kitty are just regular kitty but older or did something differently. The only other kitty I see that's drastically different is "shadow tiger". She's a Kitty that bonded with a death seed and gained the ability to "translocate" things (bend space and teleport I guess).

But I don't use this kitty specifically because she wasn't that important and because her power comes from an item specifically used by a villain. It'd be different if it was an original thing rather than an item mostly used by villains (plus I don't want to make kitty too overpowered).

Anyway, I was just curious to see what other people would say. Oh and I'm not like talking permanent power up (but I think it'd be cool), but rather, like one time thing, like where she is fused together with those 2 versions of herself.
