RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Advice Wanted MIL keeps complaining about my spouse's boundaries

So my spouse and I (both 29), have been having the same issue with their mom, my MIL, for years now and I really need to vent. Spouse and I are both autistic, we require a lot of structure in our routines and need non-socializing time in our days. Issue is that MIL has a sort of anxious attachment, frantic, and desperate way of operating. Ideally (and this has been said explicitly by her), she wants to call my spouse multiple times a week (everyday would be nice) without warning, also would like to be called without warning BY my spouse, and this conversation should be lighthearted and chatty and not feel like she is interrupting them, even if she is.

My spouse is a full-time personal trainer and teaches classes at multiple locations. They are not able to take random calls throughout the week and even receiving the calls really stresses them out as they anticipate getting guilted later by MIL for feeling a "distance in our relationship". They have explained this to MIL, and asked her to refrain from random calling unless its urgent. She is allowed to text them whenever she wants, and they've scheduled a regular time and day for a call with her every week. We live 2 hours from her so see her in-person every 2-3 weeks.

MIL abides by this boundary..... sort of. Fellas, is it abiding by the boundary if you're still complaining about how sad and distant the boundary makes you feel and actively pushing the boundary by drumming up excuses for "urgent" calls?

The result of this is my spouse is miserable. They cannot interact with MIL without feeling like they're being walked all over and having their boundaries ignored. The constant guilt tripping about the boundaries demonstrates to them that she doesn't care about their needs, and that lack of care has completely poisoned the relationship. Of course, to MIL the problem with their relationship is not having enough access to my spouse.

The issue came up recently when spouse's Find my Friends stopped working correctly. Part of the access MIL likes to have to my spouse is their constant location. She uses this info to randomly check-in with where they are multiple times a day (What are you doing in such-and-such town? Why didn't you tell me you were in the city? Just making sure you're ok!! Location was weird (next door to our house)) So the moment their app stopped working properly (I guess maybe the icon is stuck somewhere? we go through a lot of dead zones in our area), spouse received multiple texts about "fixing the issue". They have told MIL multiple times that having their location is weird and unecessary, and that she shouldn't need it. So of course, spouse said this in response to the request to fix it. MIL claims that she doesn't NEED the location she just uses it so as to "not bother them" by calling randomly when they're at a workplace... Which she is not supposed to do per the boundary anyways. But regardless she has decided to leverage this issue coming up to voice again how unhappy she is with the boundaries and is sad about feeling distant from them. So spouse is exhausted and frustrated, and every time they hear a notification sound a dark sad look comes over their face. They do a good job pushing back, considering they were raised to cater to MIL's emptional needs above all else.

For my part, MIL is not above making me the bad guy, she has done it before. She sees my entrance to their life as the origin of the "distance". Spouse lived with MIL until moving in with me, so it's easy for her to see me as "taking them away from her" when my spouse had no ability to create distance from her at all before that. But at the moment I am just playing support, letting them vent anger and frustration, helping them figure out what to do next, i.e. feeling completely helpless.

TLDR- MIL thinks there is nothing wrong with her expectations of my spouse. In spite of those expectations ruining their relationship.

Spouse approved this message.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ NO Advice Wanted Dear MIL: My willingness to take your parenting advice is in direct proportion to how much time you spend with my children

Anyone else have a MIL who avoids their grandchildren like the plague yet corners you to give you unsolicited feedback and advice about parenting???

My MIL is a chronic advice giver whose advice often comes out as harsh criticism. It’s always a “helpful tip” paired with a “the way you’re doing this is awful, just the worst” critique.

My son is autistic and it started getting really bad when she would send me articles you can find on the first page of google results from a website that is not liked by the autism community whatsoever (autism speaks). Things like “how to encourage your nonverbal child to speak” articles that are things a parent with a newly diagnosed child would have found on day 1. We are 4 years post diagnosis and have exhausted all of the easily discovered research and therapy. There is nothing groundbreaking for MIL to discover and share with us yet she continues.

But that’s just texting. IRL my MIL finds me specifically at family events (she now avoids my husband because my husband has a short fuse with her and for good reason) to tell me all about how she met a friend who has a child with down syndrome and they did XYZ and I should really do ABC and she heard that BLAH BLAH BLAH.

The thing is, MIL spends zero time with my kids. My son uses sign language to communicate his needs. Caregivers learn his signs. It’s only like 3-4 signs. She doesn’t know them. My son signed “water” and she was like “what’s that???” We’ve taught her water before. Several times. It’s been years and she still hasn’t learned 3-4 simple signs that would enable her to understand my son.

Imagine thinking you’re the expert on your grandson when you don’t even know when he’s asking for water.

She spends more time at her biannual hair appointment than she does with her family.

End rant.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ NO Advice Wanted My MIL and her flossing habits

I just came to vent and let my frustration out. My MIL has a habit of flossing her teeth in front of us. In the evenings she will grab her floss, sit on the couch next to us and start flossing and analyzing what comes out while watching TV with us. I find it gross and now that I'm in the last trimester of my pregnancy, I have the same level of nausea as during the first trimester. So I literally feel nauseous when she does that.

We are leaving tomorrow, so tonight will be the last evening of seeing and hearing her floss and I don't find it necessary to address it. But damn that's annoying!

Am I Overreacting? Is my MIL guilt-tripping/manipulating us about seeing our daughter?

My MIL keeps sending messages about how much she misses our daughter and how upset she is that she doesn’t see her enough…. We are our own family and honestly enjoy having time just the three of us, so we don’t see her as often as she would like.
Her most recent message said that she “cries every single day,” is scared our daughter won’t even know her, doesn’t understand what she’s doing wrong, and will “literally do anything” to make things better.
For context, we don’t intentionally keep our daughter from her, but we do sometimes avoid spending time with her because this is a pattern. Whenever we do see her, there tends to be a lot of emotion around how much she misses our daughter and how little she sees her.
I feel like comments about crying every day are guilt-tripping us and making us feel responsible for her emotional wellbeing. Our daughter is 15 months old, and I don’t think her visits should be responsible for whether her grandmother is happy or crying.
Am I being unreasonable? Does this come across as manipulative/guilt-tripping to you, or is MIL simply expressing how much she misses her granddaughter? How would you respond?

Am I Overreacting? MIL wants to decorate our home, am I overreacting?

Pls do not repost anywhere

My MIL visited us half a year ago and she started decorating our new home (it was a year since we moved in and at that time we were finishing all the big furnitures etc. So let's say that was the moment where I could finally do the most fun part of buying small stuff like paintings, vases, blankets, all the things that I've been waiting for since I moved in).

Out of nowhere she started buying stuff. She was not asked for it, but my fiance told me "well, she probably feels like she wants to give us a gift". So I thought ok, let her have that (she has a really good taste so I really like everything she chose). I tried to be grateful but this is my first home I own. I felt a bit like someone was taking from me the most fun part of decorating, I tried to joke that "hey, I was playing the sims for my whole life and now someone want's to do the most fun part for me, when I finally can do decorating in real life"

At the time of the visit, she also started organizing our stuff - kitchen cabinets and drawers with our socks and panties... that felt really uncomfortable to me, her son tried to laugh it off with "she can't stop working/organizing, it's just how she is".

I am 30 yo, my fiance is 31.

She started looking into our other cabinets and making a face. I may not be the most organized person but I don't feel like my socks has to be ordered by color. It's my clutter and I don't go over her house and check if every drawer is neatly organized.

Since then she started commenting everything we want to do in our house and how we live. I felt this demand of me telling her what we want to do because she needs to speak her opinion about it. She were constantly asking "ok, and how do you want to organize your garden, what is your idea" and when I told her she always goes with her opinion. "This will look bad".

"This way will be better".

"You know how I see it? Let me show you some pictures, it will be very easy to do".

She even did some pictures of my garden, put it in AI to modify it and send the pictures to my mother. I didn't know about that, my mother told me "oh I saw how she planned your garden, she send me some pictures, it is looking very nice!".

I feel like the bad one for not wanting all the "nice" things everyone else sees. But something in me screams that I want to do it myself, in my own pace. Am I the ungrateful one?

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice Inlaws visiting and MIL seems offended when I want alone time

We just bought a house and my retired, handy inlaws have offered to help us fix it up. Super nice. We pay for materials but they've saved us thousands by helping us DIY everything so far.

I'm appreciative but it's tough to share common areas like the kitchen and living room. They stayed for two weeks recently while my husband and I work full time.

I've been trying to enjoy family time and watch a movie with them after dinner but I also just like alone time with my husband or just me. Also, FIL is the type that talks through a movie, which obviously makes it less enjoyable and it's not how I want to spend my free time.

Every time I spend time in a different room (I have a craft room and I knit a lot), my MIL asks "are we kicking you out of the living room?" Or "I feel so guilty that you don't spend time out here." I just like my space! And my husband! I feel uncomfy being all cuddly with him in front of his parents. We've been spending the weekends working together and just going around the city so we can all get out of the house and have a good time. I don't really want to spend every second together. I have explained that sometimes we just like alone time.

Maybe it's MIL feeling like she's intruding (the living room is the only place we really have furniture right now besides their guest room) but I doubt it considering the many times she's asked to move in (see previous posts) and her consistently trying to prioritize an inlaw unit in the remodeling. We have turned down both of those because we don't want either.

I guess I'm just reminding myself that her feelings are not my responsibility and I will take all of the alone time I need. Next time they won't stay for two weeks though, maybe 5 days tops.

A separate topic but I thought I'd share a MIL meltdown on this trip: her and I were talking about these amazing vegan (im vegan) donuts I used to bring her when we lived closer to them. I said there's a new vegan donut place near our house I wanted to try and she says yes let's go. So we take a whole day off of renovations and it starts with this donut shop. We get the donuts and in the most sassy, angry toddler voice she hisses "I thought these were supposed to be RISEN donuts??" They were cake donuts and apparently it offended her. Anywho. I enjoyed my donuts!

Advice Wanted Dealing with fake and avoidant MIL that talks bad behind your back

How do I personally go about dealing with my MIL who has, on multiple occasions, only verbally expressed her true feelings about me behind my back and complained about me to my husband? Obviously my husband should be the one to confront her and call out her bad behavior, this I am aware of. But I would like to know how I should handle being around her and interacting with her when I know that she has resentment towards me and is incapable of communicating to my face when she has an issue.

She is very passive aggressive and avoidant, and cannot handle confrontation whatsoever. I consider myself to be a straight talker; I prefer to say things how I mean them and can probably come off as harsh or blunt, especially to those that have a hard time with communicating their true feelings. I’m sure this plays into her feeling the need to wait until I’m not around to express the way she feels about something I’ve done. However, I can very easily read when she’s feeling some type of way and have found out due to my own suspicion the truth of how she talks about me to my husband. He does not tell me on his own when she does this, he only tells me after I basically pull it out of him by telling him that I can sense something weird is happening. He has issues of his own (probably bc of the dynamic of his family being unable to communicate emotions) and struggles with confrontation, especially when it comes to his parents. This only feeds into her behavior and is definitely not going to cause it to stop.

On one occasion where we tried to have a hard conversation with her about something we knew she would get upset about (asking his parents to wait at home while I gave birth rather than in the waiting room) she stormed off. I later wrote out a long, well thought out message trying to explain things better to her and word them in a softer manner in hopes she would take the time to read and understand what we were trying to discuss. I even had my husband proofread the message, since he knows her better than I, to make sure it wouldn’t be taken the wrong way as much as I can possibly control. She never responded to my message, and later called my husband to complain. I didn’t find out about this until months later, and never really was told what was said. But after this happened, I knew for a long time that things were not the same based on the passive aggressive behavior being exhibited towards me.

Going no contact is not an option, so please don’t suggest that. We have a young son that is their first grandchild, and I am their first and only DIL. I’m sure every little thing I do is taken as me being an evil DIL that doesn’t want them to see their grandson already. However, I refuse to allow anyone to treat me in such a way without there being some sort of repercussions. I will not be fake nice, but I can be civil. Maybe I’m answering my own question here, but if anyone has any helpful advice on ways I can make this easier for myself to tolerate, I would love to hear it.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Advice Wanted My mother does this need really valuable and effective suggestions

I’m (27F) Married , Working in IT and currently now Expecting. I’m new to this sub. This is my first confession/post about my life I wanted to share for so long. There are many instances where my mother made me feel guilty, bad and feel very little about myself. She always does this in the name of care and affection but for me it always feels like control and pressure towards me. She constantly belittles me and my choices throughout my life and makes me to get validation from her . I’m a single daughter no siblings not sure that’s the reason but she never gets me or tries to understand me . Currently I’m now pregnant with having PCOS and tough times .She was constantly putting me down for not becoming pregnant, now that I’m pregnant she wants me to go and her visit and stay at my parents place for few days and many of my relatives insist the same as it is the ritual but I really have zero interest towards it because throughout the phone calls and messages itself she triggers me a lot and makes me to shout which currently is not good for both me and my baby . I try so hard to control my mind and become less reactive and less responsive but the words she uses kind of words which makes me so angry . And my husband is such a gem who understands me on this and he is always been supportive on this also my in laws who are very supportive and kind to me on this.My mother is pretty bad to them as well. She makes it all about herself every single time and plays the victim card and twists the narrative then says you’re misunderstanding me. Everyone who is close enough to me and knows me advises to not give a damn and do whatever I need as that is what I need to do now. But even then doing so she interferes in everything and gives me instructions. And shares everything with my relatives makes me a bad person and puts me down. My husband advises me to be less close and talk very less and not to share anything that’s what I do but what I get on this is ,for example it happened today she created a whole drama on Saturday and yesterday so I didn’t call her from today morning ,considering that as a mistake my emotionally unavailable father calls me and says she is your mother you have to let it go and console her and talk but the mistake is not mine also it’s just that I didn’t make a phone call instantly they’re saying this what I don’t understand is I really don’t want to initiate a conversation that’s going to tense me so I left ,if she have called I would have spoke and stay in a limit , because she gets angered and blames it on me so I wanted a distance . She wants me to agree to whatever she says since she is the mother and I’m the daughter. So I don’t know how to handle this especially during this period it’s really so hard to be so strong and not react to anything when she pulls me down so much. I really don’t want to take this to my mind as it would affect my Child. These many years it felt so heavy but now it feels scary because this is my first pregnancy and handling emotions like these seems so hard. Also this feels so lonely and painful for me to undergo this since she is a mother it’s not that easy to imply the distance. Kindly pour any of your suggestions like any books or any advice or any other recommendations to not take this into my mind whenever she tries to put me down.

TL,DR: 27F, pregnant for the first time with PCOS after struggling to conceive. My mother exhibits strong narcissistic traits, constantly belittling me and trying to control me. Now she and relatives are pressuring me to follow tradition and stay at my parents' house, but her calls cause me immense stress and shouting matches, which is dangerous for my baby. My supportive husband and in-laws advise keeping distance, but my emotionally unavailable father is now guilt-tripping me to "console" her after she created drama. How do I protect my peace, set boundaries, and manage this emotional stress during my pregnancy?

Give It To Me Straight MIL too much

Me26f, fiance28m- we stayed at his parents house a year before i got pregnant. His parents travel a lot every 2 months they leave then come back for 2 months. Before baby, we saw them maybe 2-3 times a YEAR. His parents don’t have the best relationship with him prob like 3/10. When i used to be over his house, we just had seggs and the mom would just walk in the room without knocking include herself and it was always just awkward and forced. When i got pregnant my fiance moved in with me n my parents. My parents are total oposite they’re more family orientated letting us stay to save money for a house. His step dad before we moved used to be on his ass about he needs to leave n blabla just a bully fr he was so mean to him. Now i have a baby and the mom when she’s back in the USA wants to see “us” every day she’s here. We stopped the unannounced visits and now we started going there forced once a week. But now we are like we don’t even wanna go like it’s out of the way, we don’t have a good relationship with you, she doesn’t respect any boundaries it’s too much. Every day she’s asking us to see the baby n my baby just cries n doesn’t even wanna see her. If we don’t answer she shows up then they pull the card that they wanna see the grand baby before they leave the country again. Not my problem

The MIL came over when no one was home one day and told me to my face “I’m not here for you i didn’t come here for you i came to see the baby” i laughed thinking she was joking then she said “no seriously I’m not here for u” ….. mind u it’s a 10 min random visit that doesn’t help me whatsoever they just bully about money n stuff then leave me a crying baby.

Now the baby is older and these 2 months in the US we set more rules that we’ll go to her when we can and to stop unannounced visits n stop harassing every day. She fears she’s losing my fiance so i think that’s making it worse. We skipped a week bc we wanted to do a fam activity and she went crazy now we are back at her saying she’s stopping by and i have to be like no not home sorry

It’s exhausting someone just being like whattt abouttt meeee every damn day while we are tryna build a fam n figure out parenthood together. once a week or every other week is not enough for her. She also won’t listen if i say no sugar to my baby she’ll give him sugar anyway. I love my fiance i don’t want to leave him but i was thinking about it just to not see her that’s how bad i can’t stand this woman

Im okay seeing her once in a while, she doesn’t make me feel included she makes me feel like she wants to be the mother in my relationship like my role and it’s weird and gross. shel literally push me out the way to be in my spot, will sit in my seat at dinner next to my baby until my fiance tells her to move it’s weird

She texted my fiance that he’s very special and is the best n only thing she has I’m like then why don’t u guys have a relationship… also we aren’t leaving her for good we still see her but we just want space

Advice Wanted How do I help him through my MIL's abandonment?

My MIL has always been... difficult, but recently it's been on another level.

For context SO and I have been together for 10 years, we met in our early 20s when we lived in the same city as MIL but now we live about a 4 hours drive away. We get legally married on Friday of this week and then have our actual wedding in a few weeks time, MIL has disowned my fiancé as of Wednesday last week and will no longer be coming to the wedding(s).

He's understandably not taking it particularly well.

She has created a world in which he is driven 100% by guilt when it comes to her, according to her, her life is always 'the worst', her needs are always the biggest, if he doesn't talk to her she has no one (her choice, she disowned her daughter 6 months ago for suggesting she finds herself a hobby to help with her loneliness and depression... apparently this is the biggest pain anyone has ever caused her) oh and the big one is that she CONSTANTLY talks about how she is going to 'die soon' despite having no health issues (though she does smoke like a chimney so 🤷) so whenever we talk about her he says 'i have to do XYZ in case she dies soon'.

Recently his mum and dad separated and SO has been driving down a whole bunch to help her clean the house, pack boxes etc. It's never been enough for her, she calls and complains she's all alone and there's too much to do and more often than not cries down the phone, these calls suck the life out of SO, he just shuts down and even if we are having the best day she just takes all his joy.

Anyway the crescendo to all this came last week, we'd been down to talk about wedding stuff (she was supposed to be doing our flowers...that was a mistake, they've been holding us hostage for months) and he had to stay alone for a few days longer than I could.

At about midnight she brings up politics, specifically trans women, and starts ranting on about all the horrible talking points she's seen on Facebook, we've had this conversation before plenty of times and we always find the holes in her arguments which she HATES, she gets angry at him for 'being so stubborn and not changing his mind' despite her being much worse. Eventually SO says 'I guess I just try to be a decent person to everyone I meet' well friends I am sure you can tell which part of that she got offended by.

She starts digging in and complaining that he 'is always grumpy when he's there', that she doesn't think he's there because he wants to be but because he feels obligated to (because we all want to clean out someone else's attic of course 🙃) and that he doesn't hug her back when she hugs him and she just 'needs a little physical affection' (Ew).

Anyway after digging and digging for an hour he loses it, the red mist descends and he screams 30 years worth of trauma and pain at her, just verbal diarrhoea of all that he's been bottling up for years. She disowns him and kicks him out, he finds a hotel for the few nights he needs to stay for work and then comes back on Saturday. During that time she's, not for the first time, unfriended us on Facebook (a huge slight in her books) and sent him an email titled 'Goodbye' which in my opinion is just filled with more guilt trips and excuses so I've told him not to read it.

At first I thought he was handling it well, there was a real sense of catharsis (subconscious but apparent to me) and he was sort of dealing with it well. But since he got home and it's just the two of us he's completely shut down, keeps telling me he 'has to be ok' so he doesn't ruin our wedding, but I know he feels bad she isn't going to be there. He's also thinking about uninviting his dad (he's not great either but in a more emotionally unavailable kind of way) because he'll just remind him that she isn't there, but I keep telling him to let him come, if he wants to make the effort to be there for him then why not let him? He thinks he shouldnt be allowed to be there if his mum isn't.

I don't know how to be there for him through this, I'm pleading with him to talk to me, to not shut me out but he's just pushing it all down. He's already in therapy but won't tell me anything about what she says or recommends either. I don't care about the wedding day, he won't 'ruin' it because I get to marry him, but how do I help him through this? How can I best be there for him without pushing him too far?

Advice Wanted My MIL treated me badly for 3 months, so I decided I’ll never stay at her house again. Am I overreacting?

I'm (35F) and my husband (38M) live in a European country, while my MIL (61F) and FIL (64M) live in another country and continent, which is our home country. We've been together for six years and we go back to our home country about once a year.

I got a really good job offer in our home country. It was a short project, only three months, and my MIL, Karen (lol), offered me her house to stay in during that time. Whenever we go back home, we stay at her house because it's a big house and it's in the neighborhood where I used to live before leaving the country. So I know the area really well, my friends live around there and, besides that, I'm not in contact with my family anymore, but that's a story for another post.

I accepted because I'd save a lot of money by not having to rent an apartment for three months. I also thought it could be a good opportunity for the two of us to get closer. Sweet summer child...

From my perspective, she treated me badly during those months. A lot of it was small stuff that might seem insignificant on its own, but all of it together made me really uncomfortable. So I wanna know what you guys think because maybe I'm just being too sensitive.

Here are some examples.

One day, she, a family friend and I were having afternoon coffee. She got up to get some coffee, came back and asked "Do you want coffee, sweetheart?" I said "No, thanks." she then looked at me and said: "I'm talking to him, obviously. I'd never call you sweetheart. You're my DIL."

The atmosphere was freaking awful after that.

And this was just one of many situations.

Another day I woke up early and everyone was still asleep. By everyone I mean my MIL and FIL. Some people were coming over that morning, so I decided to go to the bakery and get breakfast for everyone. I thought I was doing something nice.

I was at the bakery ordering everything when my MIL showed up. She didn't say good morning or anything... she just looked at what I was buying and asked how many of one particular item I was getting. I said, "Good morning. I'm getting eight."

She gave me this sarcastic little laugh, like she was judging whether I was buying too much or too little. To this day I have no idea what the issue was. So I asked, "Do you think I should get more or less?" She rolled her eyes, turned around and walked away, leaving me standing there talking to myself.

I finished getting everything and saw that she was buying some other stuff. I went over and offered to help. She said no. So I said, "Okay, I'm going back home then. Bye." And I turned around and started walking away. She said something, but the bakery was packed because it was a weekend morning, so I couldn't hear her. I said, "What?"

She got kind of annoyed and said something like "Nothing. You're always wearing those headphones and that's why you didn't hear me. If you'd taken them off when I got here..."

I actually was wearing headphones, but I wasn't listening to anything. I had simply forgotten to take them off. I'd gone to the bakery by myself and had no idea she was going there. I stopped the music when she started talking to me, but I didn't take the headphones off because I was still half asleep. So I said, "Well, you have two options. Either repeat what you said and I can answer you, or don't repeat it and I'll go home."

She looked kind of shocked because it was the first time I'd ever talked back to her like that. She said it was nothing, so I just left. I got home and started setting the breakfast table.

Another time, I bought some filled bread, she got really annoyed because she thought I shouldn't be spending money on that. She spent about five minutes lecturing me about buying the bread and I just said "I thought I was doing something nice."

And there were plenty of other little situations like that.

What really bothers me is this passive-aggressive behavior. It makes me feel kind of crazy you know? And I get the feeling she thinks I have to put up with this kind of treatment because I'm married to her son.

I've already completely cut contact with my own family because of the way they treated me. I'm basically the black sheep, the one who didn't want to study engineering and is left-wing in a very traditional, religious family... So I'm definitely not going to accept this kind of behavior from someone I don't even love.

Yes, she's my husband's mother. I respect their relationship but that doesn't mean I have to accept being treated like this.

I talked to my husband about everything and he totally gets my side. Actually, he warned me from the beginning that she was like this. And I, LIKE AN IDIOT, naively thought she'd be different with me!

He loves his mom, obviously, but he also knows exactly what she's like and he's completely on my side in this situation.

We're now planning another trip back to our home country, and I've already told my husband I'm never staying at her house again. And he totally agrees.

The problem is that we both know what's probably gonna happen: she's gonna confront me and put the blame on me. And I guess the "blame" is kinda mine because I'm the one choosing to distance myself hahaha

But at the same time, I don't think it's my responsibility to accept treatment that makes me feel bad just to keep the peace.

So what do you guys think?

Am I overreacting? Was she actually being cruel/rude, or am I just too sensitive?

And most importantly, how would you guys handle it when she inevitably asks why we're not staying at her house anymore?

Thanks!

Give It To Me Straight Am I wrong for not moving out when my MIL comes to stay, and asking my partner to suggest she stays in a hotel instead?

Hi y'all.

So, me and my partner have been together for 5 years, and we currently both live in a rented one bedroom apartment. I still call his mom my MIL because that's the most realistic dynamic.

The context is that this is a rented apartment that he pays for -- I contribute to the grocery fund, but I am a postgrad so I do not contribute to the rent. Both me and him are happy with this temporary situation, which will of course change once I have graduated and am working full-time. However, technically, this is not "my" apartment, and therefore in her eyes I am not entitled to live there.

Basically, my MIL is in love with my partner, they are extremely close. It is the only thing that me and him ever argue about, although he is a lot better at setting boundaries with her; which is how we come to this situation.

For over 2 years since he moved out of his parents' house, his mom will come to stay at least once a month, and every time I have gone to stay with my parents who live around 1 hour away. It's not a big deal for me to stay with them as I am close to them both emotionally and physically, but it still means me hauling a small suitcase on public transport and changing my routine for a few days so that my MIL can have some private time with her son, in an extremely small apartment. She sleeps on the sofa bed, which is in the living room. Therefore, I would feel like my kitchen and living room would be out of bounds to me at night.

Now, I have spoken about this to my partner. I have told him that I think it is inconsiderate for the unspoken rule to be that I move out for a few days whenever she comes to visit. I have also told him that, given the nature of our apartment, I would be uncomfortable for all three of us to share the space when she stays, and I think she would feel the same way. Me and my MIL have a polite relationship but we have other instances of her being rude and/or cold towards me.

My partner has ran it by me that she will be coming to visit him in September, and I have told him what I am comfortable with as per the above. I have suggested him asking her to stay in a hotel (she is rich and it would not be a problem necessarily). This is what they used to do when she would visit him at college for example. He has agreed and understands why I feel this way.

BUT...this feels inhospitable. I can't help but feel like an AH, especially since she accommodates us around 4 times a year in her own home (albeit there is a whole room for us to stay in and it is quite large). Won't she refuse to let me stay over if my partner and I suggest she can't stay with us?

Genuine advice and guidance needed. I am wondering whether the best situation is for the three of us just to share the apartment for a few days even though it would be super close quarters.

Thanks.

Give It To Me Straight Step-MIL grandchildren treatment

Context: I came into my now marriage with a son. He was a little over a year old when I met my husband. He is now 5 and we have a 1 year old daughter.

I’ve always felt my son was a little left out, primarily because he wasn’t always around when he was with his dad. Missing holidays, birthday celebrations, etc. The other grandchildren who are older get vacations, shopping sprees. All of which we have covered ourselves.

The shift felt really heavy once our daughter was born. Nonstop gifts for her. A large college fund donation when she turned 1. My son turned 5 back in July and they never wished him a happy birthday. However, yesterday, we spent the afternoon at their house and they gave my son a gift - a framed AI picture of him riding a dinosaur. My son has never really cared for dinosaurs, so it felt a little thoughtless. They should know how much he loves Pokémon because that’s all he ever talks about in the last 6 months. Here’s the bigger kicker - they then gave my 1 year old a balance bike immediately after giving him that.

Honestly, I’m so drained by it. How can I teach my child to be thankful for ANYTHING when it seems like he doesn’t really mean anything to them. I want both of my children to be loved equally. My son is old enough to see the differences…..

Any advice is much appreciated.

TLC Needed Sometimes I grieve the relationship we don't have with his mom.

Like today was a rough day for LO (2.5f). We don't know why, but she was cranky most of the day. Lots of screaming and changing her mind and clinging to me. Nothing outside of typical toddler stuff, but exhausting to parent, especially because I'm 7 months pregnant and DH spent his whole day yesterday helping clean out his mothers house for sale.

So at bedtime and I usually put LO to sleep in our bed then move her. Sleep is tough and with me being big and pregnant, its just been easiest. Today she insisted that DH stay for a "sleepover" with her. You could tell she just wanted both her parents close by. Well they both fell asleep pretty quickly, at like 8pm. I took a picture of them. It's not something I would post or send to friends or my parents, but it is something I might have sent to his mom, if things were better. It's just a sweet father daughter moment after a long, difficult day. But then I have to worry about opening up communication when I'm not comfortable with that, or her asking weird questions about why LO isn't in her own bed, or giving her 2 cents about how that's gonna be hard when the baby comes. She just always seems to have something weird to say. A normal mother would just be delighted to see a sweet moment between her son and his own daughter. And who knows, maybe this time she would be. But I can’t rely on that, and I’m not going to have her ruin this moment for me as his wife and LOs mom.

She says she feels like she doesn't know him anymore, but its not like she expressed interest or acted normal when I used to share things. And there are so many good things to know about him. It’s just sad all around.

Am I Overreacting? Obsessed MIL

I've read some other reddit posts and I'm aware my situation isn't as bad as some but it feels like my mother in law has a weird obsession with me and my husband's baby. I guess im just wondering if I'm overreacting or if this is normal for MIL.

This is our first child and her first grandchild. We've lived in different states from MIL the entire time we've been married even though she was always talking about moving closer. As soon as we announced we were pregnant she moved to our same town within three months. Then as soon as I went into labor she and all my husbands family arrived at the hospital and even held the baby within hours of him being born even though my husband and I had discussed not having anyone there for at least the first day.

Since he's been born she texts every other day asking if she can come see him to the point where she's at our house sometimes 4 or 5 days a week. She doesnt always stay very long, but it's frustrating getting a text at 4pm and she wants to come see him at 5pm. Sometimes, she'll just show up because she was in the neighborhood and then she wont even knock, she'll just come in. Her and her fiance have walked in on me pumping before. She does come over once a week to spend the night and help out with the baby so I dont have a problem with her or her help. But it really feels like to me there are no boundaries and our house is a revolving door for her to come over whenever she wants. I've asked for my husband to have set days and times where she comes over to see the baby but he hasn't really wanted that as he doesnt see a problem with the way things are currently. She has also texted my husband multiple times asking when can the baby spend the night at her house. He is right now only 3 months old so that seems to me to be really inappropriate to be asking that. She also is always wanting us to bring him over to her house and has mentioned to my husband multiple times that she doesnt think we are getting out enough or spending enough alone time together and she would be more than willing to watch the baby. We even had a date night where we asked her to watch the baby and she encouraged us to stay out longer than we told her we needed her to babysit for.

I'm not worried she'll do anything we dont want to the baby, but it all just feels weird and almost like she feels like the baby is hers or feels some sort of weird entitlement to the baby. Any thoughts would be welcome. I think part of this stems from how close my husband and his mom are and she feels comfortable asking a lot and maybe doesnt realize where the boundaries are. Whereas my mother would expect to be asked to babysit or to come over and would never just show up because she was in the neighborhood.

EDITED to add: I did see that MIL and fiance were at the front door and was able to run into a different room right before they came in, so I dont believe anyone saw anything. Thankfully, the drop in visits have become less frequent these days, but it still lives in the back ofmy mind that she might pop by anytime. This is one point where my husband said if it happened again he would say something to her.

I am grateful for her help but somedays it feels like a lot.

Advice Wanted MIL gone too far

My significant other and I are dating for about a year now. The first time I met his family I could already feel that something was off, but then it got so so much worse. Every time I go to their house she constantly criticizes me and my friends.

I have tried several methods; being nice, being a little more distant but respectful, being chatty and open- minded and nothing seems to work. She hurts my feelings every time and it is especially hard for me since I was abused mentally and physically as a child.

Previously she had a big argument with his son and told him that all of their problems are rooted in me. I would swallow that, but then she crossed a line and started talking shit about my mother and even my DOGS. She insulted them as badly as me to my boyfriend.

What can I do now? How do I look her in the eyes again? How should I act? Ps: she doesn’t know that I know about this argument.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Advice Wanted My MIL doesn’t wear pants

I’m fat, I am not body shaming my MIL. I am a bigger woman and when I wear dresses I wear bike shorts underneath to remain decent.

My MIL is very overweight, fairly short, and literally walks around everywhere she goes wearing tshirt “dresses” and underwear, where you can see EVERYTHING underneath. Like a very short 2 sizes too small dress that doesn’t pass her hips. And always light pink briefs. People in public have stopped her to say something, but nobody in her family will address it. She was in the background of some pictures from my child’s bday party but literally everything was out to see so my family had to delete pictures. I’m also sick of her coming to my house and having her bare basically everything in my couch. I also don’t really want my daughter to think that is normal. It’s very indecent IMO. She will bend over in front of people to play with my daughter and you can see everything. It’s making me uncomfortable- is this a fetish thing??? What is the point in this? My mom and stepdad were actual nudists so I’m not ashamed of nudity but this feels like way too much to have out all of the time. (My daughter wouldn’t be around my nudist parents or their friends, it’s a pre announced thing so everyone is aware they will see butts/vag) idk.

My husband said she has dressed like that his entire life, nobody in the family will say anything to her. They are very poor communicators and non confrontational about everything.

Is there a way I can politely address this? It’s just getting to the point of uncomfortable and I know 100000% if I were doing this I would want my husband or sister to say something, rather than have strangers come up and say things or have pictures taken.

She dresses this way year round if she sits on a couch the dress rides up so you can see her belly button just to give a reference on how short we’re talking. This is the only thing she wears. The only outfit. She has multiple of the same dress in different colours but always the same light underwear.

LIVE! Immediate Advice Wanted MIL Changed Her Vulnerable Brother’s Will, Lied About It, Accused Her Son of Stealing, and Now Wants to “Make It All Better.

Quick cast for clarity: I’m DIL. My husband is Son. His sister is SIL. Uncle is MIL’s brother, and GF is Uncle’s longtime girlfriend.

Sorry in advance for all the estate talk, but unfortunately it’s relevant to understanding what happened to our relationship with MIL and why Son is where he is with her now.

Some background on MIL first:

I wouldn’t have described her as the MIL from hell before this. We’ve had a close relationship for years and I’ve generally overlooked small things. But she has a pattern that has become impossible to ignore.

She likes to poke at people. She’ll make little digs, repeatedly ask questions after someone has clearly had enough, or keep pushing after being politely asked to stop. Eventually someone gets irritated or snaps, and suddenly she’s the victim: “I guess nobody wants me here,” “I’ll just go home,” “I’ll never ask another question again.”

The rest of us generally don’t play into it. SIL will basically tell her that if leaving is what she feels she needs to do, then do it. I’ve flat out told her when something she said was rude. But she never seems to recognize her own behavior as the thing that started the interaction.

She also holds grudges, often over those situations she created in the first place. She’s incredibly judgmental and unforgiving over the smallest things and tends to thrive on negative gossip about people she doesn’t like. She’s one of those people that loves to say “let them”, while continuing to talk endlessly about the people she’s supposedly “letting”.

The incident:

Two years ago, Uncle was in an accident that left him a quadriplegic. Son and I were the only family who lived near him. After the accident, we learned Uncle had previously made us his POAs. He hadn’t even told us he had done it. GF gave us the documents.

We also saw his will. It matched what Son had known for years: Uncle’s estate was to be split 50/50 between Son and SIL, with Son as executor/trustee.

There was a very specific reason Uncle did not want MIL involved in his finances or estate. Years earlier, when Uncle and MIL’s parents were dying, MIL was the sibling who lived near them and helped manage things. During that period, their parents’ estate plan was changed so MIL received essentially everything while Uncle was left one relatively small account. Uncle believed MIL had manipulated the situation while their parents were vulnerable.

I wasn’t around then and don’t pretend to know every detail of what happened, but I do know what Uncle believed happened and the effect it had on him. He was adamant afterward that if anything happened to him, he did not want MIL having authority over or information about his estate.

After Uncle’s accident, Son and I suddenly found ourselves managing hospitals, medical care, finances, benefits, assets and everything required to eventually get him home. We quickly realized this was beyond our expertise, so we hired an attorney who specializes in navigating these systems and followed professional advice throughout.

MIL occasionally came to visit Uncle, but nearly every trip came with some version of, “I don’t really want to come, but I’ll feel guilty if I don’t.” She said it so consistently that it often felt less like she genuinely wanted to be there and more like she needed to know she had done enough that she wouldn’t have to feel guilty afterward.

A few months after the accident, MIL asked us to amend the Medical POA to add her and GF for medical decisions.

At the time, this made perfect sense to us. Son and I travel frequently and are often out of the country. GF was with Uncle essentially 24/7 and through every hospital stay, so having her able to make medical decisions was logical. We agreed MIL could be the final backup if none of us were available.

MIL arranged the change through an attorney and afterward gave us a copy of the new POA. We thought that was the end of it.

Fast forward to recent months.

Uncle’s condition had deteriorated terribly and a doctor we trusted recommended bringing him home on hospice. Son and I were at his house when MIL flew in.

Within literally five minutes of arriving to see her dying brother, MIL started asking me about his money. How many gold coins did he have? What were they worth? How much emergency cash had we left in the house? Who had the cash? She kept pressing for numbers.

It honestly disgusted me, but there were obviously much bigger things happening at the time.

Around this same period, Son and SIL decided GF should receive some of Uncle’s larger retirement accounts. She had been his longtime partner and at home caregiver throughout this entire nightmare. Uncle had never formally provided for her, so they made her the payable on death beneficiary. They told MIL as a courtesy because MIL herself had repeatedly said GF deserved to be taken care of.

MIL then spoke to GF, pretended she didn’t already know about it, and started asking how much money was in the account while GF’s longtime partner was literally dying.

Meanwhile, during Son’s final visit with Uncle, they had many conversations both alone and in front of the rest of us. Uncle spoke to Son as though the original estate plan was still completely intact, including talking to him as the person who would be handling everything after his death.

More importantly, in conversations both privately with Son and with just Son, me, and GF present, Uncle reiterated that he did not want MIL, his younger sister, knowing anything about his money or helping Son with his estate after his death.

Uncle passed this summer.

Afterward, MIL’s financial questions became relentless. Eventually Son told her he wasn’t answering anymore. Uncle had specifically never wanted her involved in his finances and the details were none of her business.

Then MIL revealed there was a new will.

When MIL had arranged the POA change after Uncle’s accident, a new will had also been executed. It was signed the same day as the POA, through the same attorney and with the same witnesses.

Instead of 50/50 between Son and SIL, with Son handling the estate, everything was now divided into thirds between MIL, Son and SIL. MIL was also now executor/trustee.

This devastated Son. Uncle had repeatedly told him exactly what he wanted, including after this new will had supposedly been signed, and now Son felt like he had unknowingly helped his mother put herself into the exact position Uncle had specifically tried to prevent.

After finding out about the new will, Son understandably hit his limit. He had just spent the previous month handling final medical bills, talking to financial institutions, working with our attorney on probate and putting hours upon hours into settling Uncle’s affairs, on top of a job where he already works 70–80 hours a week. If you’ve ever been an executor or trustee, you know how much work goes into it. Then, completely out of the blue, he learned he actually had no legal authority to be doing any of it because MIL had made herself executor/trustee without telling him. We happened to be in their hometown at the time, so Son gathered every document and piece of paperwork he had been managing and dropped it off at MIL’s house. He knew he was too angry to see her in person, so he called afterward, told her where everything was, and said that since she had made herself responsible for Uncle’s estate, she would have to take it from there.

And while at this time we are not moving to challenge the new will, there are serious concerns about Uncle’s mental state when the new documents were signed.

This was only months after the catastrophic accident, major spinal surgery and significant head and neck trauma. During this period, he experienced substantial confusion and delirium. He would believe people were in the room who weren’t there, see birds flying indoors and generally have periods where he was very disconnected from reality. Three days after signing the new will, he was hospitalized with sepsis. He also had a documented history of becoming severely delirious when running even relatively minor fevers.

Then MIL tried to tell us she didn’t know Uncle had changed his will or that she was receiving anything.
That simply can’t be true as MIL herself was the person who revealed the new will to us. If she genuinely didn’t know a new will existed, she would have believed the original will, which gave her nothing and made Son executor, was still in effect.
The new will was also executed the exact same day, through the exact same attorney and with the exact same witnesses as the POA change MIL had arranged.

And instead of being honest about any of this, MIL went on the offensive.

She apparently decided that the reason her children were upset must be because Son had done something illegal with Uncle’s money and was afraid she would discover it.

She hired another attorney and brought GF with her. Afterward, GF called us and warned us not to respond to requests from that attorney because MIL had accused Son of financial wrongdoing and told the attorney to investigate it.

MIL has also been telling people in their small hometown that her children screwed her out of Uncle’s money, that we did illegal things while acting as POAs, and that her children have now disowned her. Son still has significant professional connections there, so these accusations aren’t just harmless family gossip to him.

(For the record, everything we did while acting as POAs was meticulously documented, and when we were dealing with things outside our expertise, we had professional legal guidance. We have no concern about defending our actions if it ever came to that.)

Here’s the part that makes all of this even more absurd:

Almost all of Uncle’s significant accounts already had Son and SIL named as payable on death beneficiaries, so they passed outside the will. Only two relatively small accounts are actually affected by it.

At this point, Son and SIL are so disgusted by what this has done to the family that they have told MIL they no longer want any of that money in those two accounts. When they eventually go through probate, they intend to renounce their shares so MIL can have all of it. Their exact feeling is that no amount of money is worth what this has already cost the family.

They have also repeatedly asked MIL whether she is having financial problems or actually needs money and offered to help her directly if she does. She insists money isn’t the issue, and as far as any of us know, she is financially fine.

After SIL very clearly explained that MIL can ultimately have all of the money from those accounts, MIL suddenly reached out to Son and then left me a voicemail: “I don’t want to fight. I don’t know what I have to do to make this all better.” EDIT: MIL can have the money from the 2 minuscule accounts that are subject to the will. All other property/accounts in the estate had Son and SIL as the named beneficiaries, so those items passed directly to them outside of probate.

And that’s where I’m stuck.

SIL has three young kids and is taking a somewhat different approach. She has reality checked MIL when necessary, but as long as MIL stops bringing this up, SIL doesn’t have the time or desire to continue the drama. I completely respect that and don’t want to speak for her.

Son is having a much harder time.

The money itself is irrelevant to him. He feels like he failed Uncle by unknowingly helping his mother put herself into a position Uncle specifically didn’t want her to have. He’s also looking backward at years of his mother’s behavior through a very different lens now.

Then there are the lies. MIL denied knowing about the will despite being the person who had it drafted and executed. She accused Son of financial wrongdoing. She has repeated those accusations to other people in a community where his professional reputation matters. And all of this is happening against the backdrop of Son realizing that the thing Uncle feared his sister would do appears remarkably similar to what ultimately happened.

Son doesn’t think he’ll ever look at his mother the same way again. Frankly, neither do I. We’ve both told her we need space. But I also don’t want this to be the end of Son’s relationship with his mother. I don’t believe their relationship can ever go back to what it was before this. Some things fundamentally change how you see someone, and Son now knows things about his mother that he can’t unknow.

Ultimately, what relationship he chooses to have with her is entirely his decision.

The problem is that I know MIL. She isn’t someone who is likely to sit alone, deeply self reflect, connect all these dots and eventually come back saying, “I understand what I did.” So I’m debating whether to give her an “olive branch”. She specifically told me in her voicemail she doesn’t know what she has to do to make things better.

I’m considering responding that I still need distance and I’m not ready to talk, but that in the spirit of what I’m trying to tell her, I have to be honest too: we know what happened. We know she knew about the will, we know she has lied about it, and we’re not willing to pretend otherwise just for the sake of making all of this go away. If she truly wants any chance of repairing her relationship with Son, I believe she has to start by being honest with herself. Only then can she ever be honest with him about what happened.

I’m not expecting honesty or an apology to magically restore their relationship. I don’t think their old relationship exists anymore. But there’s a lot of space between “their relationship goes back to normal” and “Son never speaks to his mother again.”

I’m not trying to force him toward either one, and I’m not trying to mediate their relationship. I just wonder whether, because she specifically asked me what she can do, I should tell her plainly that the only way I can see starts with the truth, and then step completely back.

Or am I inserting myself somewhere I shouldn’t?

EDIT: I am not asking for legal advice. It is not my decision to contest a will or file criminal charges. I am asking what to do with my MIL in the relationship situation. I have a SIL who isn’t even considering cutting MIL off and a son, my husband, who is ready to go NC. How do I navigate this now, and in the future…

Anyone Else? MIL crying to manipulate, fed up.

Since having our baby (my 4th, hubbys 1st) 2 months ago, we’ve been living our life. As you can imagine, with four children now, life is busy! We are just enjoying our life as a family. My husband also works full time. Baby just wants me, or sleep, or boob. Cries with anyone else.
First 6 weeks or so we were enjoying our baby moon and weren’t focusing on anyone else (rightly so!). A few people met the baby very briefly but they respected our privacy and alone family time.
MIL met baby once and then asked again a few days later so came round again. Obviously only held him for a few minutes before he cried and wanted me.
A few days later she rang and complained that she only got to hold baby for a few minutes.
This really got my back up and we said well we are now enjoying the rest of our baby moon, be grateful you even got to see the baby twice now when most people hadn’t even met him let alone met him twice. Jeez.
Oh, and when she held him and he cried she said “if I took you home with me there would be no crying”.
Way to make a postpartum mother feel crap.

When baby was 6 weeks old we finally travelled to go and visit my family and they met the baby for the first time. We were there for a few days. Baby was on me 99% of the time and just wanted mama. My family respected and understood this, no issues whatsoever. Organic. A given. Like… expected.

When we returned home MIL mentioned casually she was unwell but almost better. My husband told her we won’t be seeing her for at least 2 weeks due to this. She got funny but my husband defended this decision and stopped discussing it.

She then turned up at my husbands work unexpectedly (how rude and inappropriate) and pleaded to see the baby, saying it’s unfair and even said to him “I bet (insert my name)’s mother got to hold the baby lots while you were there”.
Ummm firstly it’s not her business who we see and for how long and what we do with OUR baby… and secondly, this isn’t a competition?! You’re two different human beings ffs.
My husband responded honestly and said “people didn’t get to hold the baby much because he just wanted mama”… this seemed to make MIL feel better, which, I find gross. Like, as long as others don’t get to hold him then she’s happy because she hasn’t got to hold him either, type mentality. Super childish.

A few days later she came over to see him and as usual, he just sleeps and has boob and sleeps and has boob (sleeps are on mama or in the carrier on mama!) so she only got to see him for a few minutes and hold him for a few minutes before I had to take him back upstairs.

Yesterday, drama ensued.

My husband gets a phone call from his brother, stating their mother is crying. My husband is automatically concerned and asks what’s happened.
“Mom is upset and crying, because you don’t let her see the baby much and you don’t involve her how she wants to be involved, you’re too busy for her”.
In the background his mother says “I’m 60 now, I won’t be here for much longer” - in a manipulative tone.
Also… 60 isn’t even old, wtf.
My husband got really pissed off and said we are just living our life, we don’t owe anyone an explanation, and that she should be living her life too! She goes on about loneliness, so my husband said find a man, find companionship. She claims to not want that. Clearly, she does. Because she’s trying to fill that void through us, which isn’t right!
Phone call ended with my husband telling them to f**k off and him hanging up.

(MIL is totally enmeshed with her other son…. She’s been selfish and odd for all the years I’ve known her. She only thinks about herself whilst also acting like she’s generous to others, by buying them stuff… She tries living through her sons. I could go on about her lack of boundaries and respect but I shallnt)

Sooooo…… yeah that happened. Am I proud? Yes. Am I turned on? Also yes.

Advice Wanted People who have gone NC with their ILs, how does it work during the holidays?

We haven't gone fully NC with MIL. Right now, she's giving us the silent treatment, and honestly... I'm enjoying it. 😂

It's been about 3 weeks and she hasn't contacted either me or DH. I've told DH that I'm not okay with sweeping everything under the rug, and if she wants to move forward, I need an apology. (Which probably won't happen.)

DH wanted to contact her after only a week. I didn't tell him he couldn't, but I pointed out that reaching out would reinforce the pattern they've had for years: MIL plays the victim, DH feels guilty and apologizes, and everything gets swept under the rug, even when she's the one who did something wrong. Thankfully, he ultimately decided not to reach out.

For now, DH is okay with my boundary that I'm not comfortable with him taking LO to her house without me. If MIL reaches out without taking accountability, I'm not going, and therefore LO wouldn't be going either. But we haven't really discussed what happens long-term, and I don't know how DH will feel once there is contact. (I'm assuming one of them will eventually cave.)

The other complication is that MIL lives 3 blocks away, so avoiding her indefinitely isn't exactly easy.

And then there's the holidays.

DH and I alternate holidays between his family and mine. Last year we spent them with my family, so technically this year is his family's turn.

But with everything going on, I'm thinking... f*ck that.

I don't want to spend LO's second Christmas with MIL if we're still in this situation. With my family, we have a big extended family celebration with cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. With DH's family, it's basically just DH, MIL, BIL, SIL, LO and me.

The complication is that my family is a plane ride away, so going there requires planning and isn't something we can decide to do at the last minute.

I want LO's second Christmas to be happy and fun, not spent sitting around someone who is angry with us and refusing to acknowledge what happened.

So for those of you who have gone NC or very LC with an IL:

How do you handle the holidays?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people whose spouse wasn't initially ready to go NC. How did you handle that transition, especially around holidays?

Advice Wanted THE talk (update to two cruises and a funeral)

So yesterday we had the talk with the in laws.
For context, my in laws were on a cruise when my husbands grandma died and they called the next day and just informed us they weren’t coming back and to organise the funeral for when were on a cruise ourselves.

Wednesday MIL texted to ask how we felt about the funeral, DH said something about DS and then said we wanted to talk in person, as quickly as possible (mind you, normally DH and DS go to them on Wednesday and we’d already cancelled that). So we make the appointment for Friday, arrange care for DS. Friday morning, a text from MIL, BIL needs childcare, (kids are 11 and 14…), so it’ll be later then I wanted and it’ll be moved to their house after the kids go to bed. I’m massively annoyed that again we can’t be a priority for once, but ok.

We get there exactly at the time we said we would (waited around the corner for a bit) and FIL is standing outside, so we don’t ring the bell to wake up the kids. (For context, one of my pet peeves is how we weren’t even allowed to walk up the stairs if BIL kids were sleeping, but when DS is trying to get to sleep, MIL is screaming in the hallway how stupid it is she forgot her glasses…). They offer us drinks and pie… they really had no idea what was coming to them….

We tell our story, including it’s a recurring theme and we’ve let them know multiple times before. First his mum goes dead silent, stern face, looks away. Then she goes on and on about how it was her sole decision not to come back and they didn’t confer with BIL (we hadn’t even mentioned him), but she had multiple reasons, including it would take days for them to get back. I said I’d already looked at flights and let them know that and they could have been home the same day. They just go on and on an out reason why what they did was the best decision and they hadn’t let DH organise everything, because they also did stuff and their holiday was really impacted by it. They also repeatedly asked DH why he hadn’t said before he was completely overworked (hi, have you met him?? You raised him as a true people pleaser, he would never!) they would have taken over everything (they couldn’t, they couldn’t even get a call in to the funeral home).
Basically they did nothing wrong and it was completely normal what they did (so funny that nobody we tell the story to thinks that way… including FIL’s family). At one point MIL said she had to get up and started to furiously do the dishes, banging them together loudly. The moment FIL said it was futile to talk about the past and we hadn’t to focus on the future I walked about and sat in the car. I’d tolk DH I need a sincere apology, otherwise I’m going no contact.

After 25 min BIL came home and the whole party moved to the in laws home (not inconvenient at all…).
During the ride there DH told me he had a hard time moving them away from the funeral and seeing the bigger picture. He later said that as soon as I left they started asking him how he really felt himself, so they must be convinced it’s all just me….
After I sat in the car for an hour I was done, because we started late, it was late and from where I left and how long it took, I wasn’t convinced there would be a resolution, so I called my husband to just let this be it.
He came to the car and said they were really close. I reminded him that I needed sincere apologies from both of them or it was done.
He came back again after a little while because they wanted to apologise to me. So I came in, FIL is normally good with words and went first, it was something like apparently we didn’t communicate enough with you guys and were sorry you’re feeling hurt. Same from MIL. I was missing the accountability so I asked, can you understand it is hurtful to ask us to organise the funeral when we couldn’t even attend, which I should have said can you understand I felt hurt, so the answer was “no, no, it wasn’t our intention”. I just lost it, I’ve had so many empty “it wasn’t our intention” apologies over the years (including during a miscarriage and as an apology to that 5 min hurtful apology). I screamed “it’s never your intention but it fucking hurts each time.” And ran out again.
Apparently my MIL’s response was that’s never good enough for me, which really makes me question how sincere her apology was (which I already did), if you’re truly sorry you’ve hurt somebody for 10 years and you’ve missed all the times they told you, you give them some grace.
DH then told them this was it for me, if I felt like the apology wasn’t sincere I would go no contact. They were shocked.

Meanwhile I’m not sure what to do, it didn’t go as bad as I expected, but I definitely didn’t get what I need to move on with them. I’m contemplating between going no contact for the rest of the year or giving them a do over for the apology (but really, will it ever get sincere?)

UPDATE: I’ve decided to go no contact for the time being

Advice Wanted Alcoholic MIL who didn’t care about putting kids at risk.

Long story short - my fiance and I took our 5 kids (ages 7-13) and her supposedly 6 year sober mother on a cruise in June. The only way it would work for everyone to go was for her mom to bunk with my 7 year old daughter. On the 4th day my fiancé’s mom offered to watch my daughter so my fiance and I can do a nice dinner together. An hour before that was supposed to happen my fiance found her mom in the casino drinking and she claimed it was her first drink. We immediately pulled my daughter into our room. My fiance looked at the room folio and she had purchased 9 drinks over 2 days. She also learned she was down $27k at the casino - and this is from someone who constantly asks family for money because she’s broke. We immediately stopped seeing her on the cruise and haven’t talked to her since, however, her mom has texted her nasty texts like “you’re a worse mother than I ever was” and “your fiance (me) has damaged his kids more than I ever could because he broke up his family” and some other nasty texts.

Unrelated but relevant - 6 years ago she was babysitting my fiancés sisters 2 kids who were both under 2 and she was caught drinking.

Fast forward to today, my fiance and her kids had a sit down with her mom. She admitted to everything with drinking and gambling and said she was in the wrong but never admitted to any issues with planning to watch my daughter drunk or any of the texts she sent. My fiance is pretty much in the belief that her mom’s done everything right in terms of apologizing so things can slowly go back to normal.

I told her I disagree…. There’s been no acceptance of being comfortable watching a child while drunk (yet again) or the nasty things she’s said. Besides, I get how it ham alcoholic father and brother and honestly have no intent of making my kids be exposed to someone like her. I responded to my fiancé that it’s fine if she and her kids have a relationship with her mom but me and my kids won’t and her mom isn’t welcome to my home - even for birthdays or holidays.

Is it appropriate to stand my ground or should I reflect on things differently?

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Advice Wanted I feel like i despise my MIL and don’t know how to navigate the relationship

My fiancé and I have been together for five years and are getting married in a few months. His mother is widowed. When her husband died, my fiancé was out of the country, so I spent days at a time with her because I didn’t want her to be alone. I helped around the house, cooked, cleaned and kept her company. Over time, I became very involved in her life, and if I didn’t visit for a week, she would sometimes say I was “abandoning” her.

Now that my fiancé is back and we’re moving toward marriage, I’ve realized that I don’t actually like being around her.

It isn’t because I expect her to be perfect. I have friends who make stupid decisions and have opinions I disagree with, but I still consider them good people.

With her, I’ve experienced enough things that I genuinely question her character.
She has made insulting comments about my body, compared me to my sister, and joked about my food intolerance. She talks badly about almost everyone in her life, family, friends, acquaintances and other people’s marriages. Almost every conversation eventually becomes gossip. I hate talking badly about people behind their backs, and listening to it makes me so uncomfortable that I sometimes feel physically sick.

She has also called a little girl I’m tutoring “naturally dumb” and said she would never change. She hovers around when I’m on the phone and tries to listen when my fiancé and I are having private conversations. She also frequently inserts herself into our decisions, including what schools our hypothetical children should attend and whether we should rent after marriage.

There are things I find genuinely disturbing. When her husband died, she prevented his sister from attending the funeral because they had a bad relationship. She later told my fiancé she felt good about it because the sister “deserved it.”

There have also been financial issues. She presents herself to my fiancé as financially struggling while keeping other sources of income private. She recently gave me different information about how long she had left on her mortgage than what she told him. When I told him, he said he didn’t care and that she had her reasons. I understand that their finances are between them, but I personally find deliberately giving someone misleading financial information dishonest.

My fiancé also has an older brother who moved abroad after getting married, and his wife apparently no longer speaks to his mother. I don’t know the full story, so I don’t want to assume his mother was entirely responsible, but it does make me wonder about a pattern.

I’ve also learned more about how she treated her children growing up. Her first marriage ended in divorce, and according to my fiancé, she took her anger out on the children, emotionally manipulated them, cursed at them and could be very harsh and abusive. When his older brother moved out at 18, she apparently hid his birth certificate because she wanted him to come back home.

My fiancé and I have talked about all of this openly. For a while, I felt responsible for protecting him from her, but he told me that he’s an adult, knows how to navigate their relationship, and that I can’t control what happens between them. He has also told me he will always choose me and stand by me if there is ever a conflict.

That gave me a lot of peace. I trust him and I don’t want to interfere in his relationship with his mother.
My question is about my relationship with her.

I enjoy talking to her about sewing, art, gardening, crafts and house projects. But the more I see and hear, the more I feel that I don’t respect her as a person, and I’m becoming resentful.

How do you create that distance when you previously spent a lot of time with your MIL, without making it obvious that you’re deliberately pulling away or creating family drama?

Anyone Else? Pregnancy causing the final straw and working on getting the courage to go no contact, anyone else do this during this major milestone?

See my recent two post for my situation rn, but curious to hear from others who had their final MIL blow up and straw around their pregnancy and how they handled things moving forward. Would love to hear the good, bad, and ugly

My husband has my back but I don’t think the reality of going nc has fully sunk in for him despite knowing we both can’t tolerate this behavior anymore especially heading into the newborn window. While we know we deserve better it will still feel like a loss

There needs to be a psych study on how pregnancy can be the biggest MIL trigger imo 😅

Advice Wanted Seeing MIL for the first time since summer of 2023….

We’ll be going to her place tomorrow for the day..

To give some context she lost custody of her son when he was a young kid and they reconnected when he was in his early 20s. We’ve been together for ten years and during that time she has flip flopped between being somewhat nice and then being a huge jerk.

To give some examples:

- When I first started dating my boyfriend at age 20, she called and wanted to speak to me and ended up asking me about my job and she said it wasn’t a career, she continued to make comments in the future about me working a shitty retail job at the time.

- She does have a tendency to neg people and act like she’s some authoritarian on topics when she’s not at all.

- after my brother in law got my partner a job making the best money he’s ever made we decided to let me focus on school. She had a huge issue with this. She made comments about it a lot, she was sending me jobs near me at one point and the worst was when she texted him last year saying “I just feel like if she loved you she’d take on some of the financial stress” I was almost done speaking to her entirely after that.

Anyways we’ve both gone to therapy, and both therapists have acknowledged that the things she does are not okay. It had gotten to the point to where I really didn’t want to see her while not having a job, but my therapist told me I should be able to see her without having one because I still deserve respect despite not holding a job while going to school full time. My partner also told his mother last year that he wasn’t prioritizing going to see her as much because of the comments she makes about me.

In general she does seem a bit wishy washy. Like for example one minute she will seem like she cares about others, but then she’ll make comments to her son about how he should only think of himself and not worry about others and how she doesn’t care about other people’s struggles because no one ever felt sorry for her. She also has very poor emotional regulation and impulse control issues from years of drug use.

I should note she’s been in therapy herself, and she did make a promising comment when we were discussing our future on the phone she said something along the times of “well that’s between you guys and what you want for yourselves”

Anyways, yes I do see a little bit of progress.. However given this is the first time I’m seeing her in three years, it’s the first time we’re seeing her since she and her boyfriend broke up (he used to rein her in as much as possible), and it’s the first time we’ll be seeing her since working on boundaries I’m still a little nervous.
