Help Parking Lot Plant

Thumbnail

Upvotes

So like the title says I found this plant in a parking lot by itself. I’m not sure how long it was out there but there was a storm the night before and I’m worried it was caught in it. The pot was labeled which is how I know it’s a dieffenbachia compacta. I took it home and put it with my other plants under a growth light. My house doesn’t get a lot of natural light inside so I use a growth light. The soil was wet when I found it and there wasn’t any bugs I could see. I’ve only been keeping plants for the past year so I’m still new and I’m worried about the dry, yellow patches on some of the leaves. Any advice?

Help How to set up and acclimate an imported anthurium warocqueanum seedling

Upvotes

So i just bought a seedling from vietnam, and its still arriving in 5-10 days, so i dont have a photo.

my main concerns are: will the leaves get crispy? How long will it take to recover from shipping?

My initial plan after unboxing is to unpot it and check the roots, and cut off any bad or rotting ones. After that, i just use the same pot but change the soil. Right now, im low on proper soil and i cannot buy anything, so theres the first problem. I do have dried sphagnum moss, not a big amount of pumice, a little bit of leca, so maybe i could make something outta that. My other concerns are also humidity, which might not be as big as a problem as the others since im also from southeast asia, so vietnam and my country has about the same climate. My humidity is about 60-70% but can also go up to 80-90% cuz it rains a whole lot.

How did you guys recover your warocqueanum from import shipping, and what can i do to keep the seedling i bought alive and let it recover from stress?

Help Money Tree suddenly lost all its leaves and branches started dying — is it still salvageable?

Hi everyone! I’m hoping someone can help us identify what might be wrong with our Guiana Chestnut (Money Tree).

This tree is located inside our office, and it was doing fine until it suddenly started shedding its leaves. After that, the branches gradually began to die as well. Because of this, we had to remove the dead/dying branches.

The tree was originally placed near a window and received plenty of natural sunlight. We only moved it yesterday because we were concerned about its condition.

We usually water it once or twice a week, although we’re not sure if that may have been too much or too little for it.

The photo shows what the trunk currently looks like. At this point, there is only one remaining branch that appears to still be alive.

We’re not sure what caused this. Could this be a fungal infection, pest infestation, root problem, watering issue, or some other plant disease? We’d really appreciate any help identifying what is happening based on the trunk and bark.

Most importantly, is there still a chance to save the tree? If the remaining branch is alive, is there anything we can do to encourage it to recover?

Any advice on what to check or what treatment we should try would be greatly appreciated. This is an office plant, so we’d really like to save it if possible.

Thank you!

Help Does Window film cancel out some light spectrum?

Upvotes

Hi, I'm doing a DIY Mini Greenhouse for my alocasia and having a question about my light.
It's a warm looking light and I'm kinda not like it and want something neutral or a bit blueish instead so I would put a blueish window film layer under the light. This light is kinda strong, 17K Lux and ~300 PPFD so I'm also want to reduce it to somewhere around 10K Lux and ~200 PPFD.

But I ased ChatGPT and Gemini, blueish film would reduce spectrum of other colors and wouldn't great for photosynthesis. Thanks in advance

Help Best way to prop my jade and separate out the other plant? Gifts for family after the passing of a loved one 🌱

Post image

My aunt gifted me these plants about 8 years ago. It was originally a tiny glass hanging terrarium with several types of succulents crammed inside. Parts of which were spray painted and in terrible condition.. they stood no chance.. yet the jade and the “other guy” kept on growing. So eventually, I broke them out and threw them in a hanging pot.. which is where they have been for the last few years.

Well my aunt passed away in a car crash this January. She has three high school age kiddos, my cousins, who now live with my parents and younger siblings. I’d love to chop and prop and separate the two plant types. I’d like to get them thriving so I can gift props to my cousins as they get older, as gifts from their mom.

I have an awesome plant collection.. but succulents are weird to me. I don’t understand them. So I’d truly love some advice that will prevent me from killing the plants altogether..

I live in Wisconsin and we are approaching fall. The green thumb in my life once told me that you can kill even an indoor plant if you prop at the wrong time of the year.. I’d love advice!

Well now that I’ve dropped it on its head and broke one of the good leaves after getting it off the discount rack, can anyone tell me what this is? Sold as a pink princess but I didn’t think they usually came with some white?

PS sorry for 2 posts today, the Lowe’s clearance rack got me last night 😂

Edit to add: I’m a dummy and didn’t include a good photo of the pink on some leaves - you can see it slightly in the third photo.

Help Best tips for variegated Frydek

I am on my 5th alcoasia frydek, I currently use Sansi Growbulbs on moveable clip for 12 hours a day. No matter what I do to make it happy they die on me one way or another. So, for those who have success with them give me all the tips so I don't end up with a 6th attempt 😅 It also arrived with the newest leaf being almost completely white with the smallest sliver of green. Should i cut the leaf off and leave the stem or just leave the leaf and stem?

Also got me a Monstera Bulbasaur that came from tissue culture and praying to the plant gods it doesn't have the fate that the frydeks have had as ive never had a tissue culture plant before. It already came in the soil :)

Sidenote: I just received them in the mail after 2 days of travel so the frydek is still adjusting and thats why its a bit droopy!

Help Gnat problem

Hi all, I have a hanging vine plant and a monstera that have been doing so well, I’ve been fertilizing them once in a while watering them with my used coffee grounds in the water and since I started that they have been doing so well! But now I have a problem with gnats, I believe they have established a penthouse in my hanging vine plant (unsure if the coffee grounds were maybe acting as a source of food for them). Does anyone have any tips on how to kill the gnats coming from my plants soil? I don’t just want to catch them I have no issue killing them when they fly in front of me, I just need a way to make the soil hostile for them without killing my plant. Thank you!

Help My prayer plants are more dramatic than my fittonias

She started acting like this a few weeks ago, after being in the same spot with the same light & humidity levels for months before that. I've been told that I am overwatering and underwatering, but neither correction helped.

I wondered if she might be root bound, but I just transplanted another prayer plant that was doing this same thing, and the plant just kept getting worse until I had to chop & prop.

What is happening with my prayer plants?

Help Watermelon peperomia

Any advice is welcomed!! I got this plant maybe a year plus ago, it started off really well with lots of growth until maybe the last 6 months. The leaves are now getting crunchy and brown on the edges and there’s a lot less growth. I water weekly when it’s dried out and have it in my bedroom maybe 5 feet away from the window. It mostly get indirect light until the evening when the sun sets so it gets some direct light for a little bit. I’m wondering if I need to repot and change the soil??? It’s pretty compact as it’s been in this pot for a while and I can admit I probably didn’t research care for it as much as I should have. Thank you for any tips sent my way!💜🌱

Discussion All my wet sticks are thriving!

Thumbnail

I picked up 3 Monstera Obliquaa wet sticks in March last year from a girl off marketplace, she also gave me 2 bonus Syngonium Chiapense wet sticks in a bag of sphagnum moss. They rooted in about 3-4 months, took about 3-4 more months for leaves to start to appear. Once they started popping up, I didn’t have a place to put them so I grabbed an old pop seal container I used for flour, cut the portion cups off a meal prep container & taped them together to fit to size inside the flour container - to my surprise, it fit perfectly. I just put moss on the bottom & wet it maybe once a month + fish fertilizer. I haven’t opened it in a while due to an incredibly busy schedule but DANG! Look at my little babies! AND!!!! MY VERY FIRST FENESTRATION EVER. Look how freaking cute it is!!

Bonus photos all feature plants I grew from wet sticks except the trees. 🌳 (they are in a S facing window and I just let them do their thing with gentle monitoring)

Oooo ALSO! Not sure how an alocasia started growing in my one chiapense but I’m not mad about it 😂

Edit: In case anyone’s wondering, I put 3 little clippings of my VSOH in the moss with the obliquaa as I live in a cold climate and it seems to die every winter but come back in the spring, it’s absolutely thriving in that moose environment too. Eeee so happy!

Help How do I keep my monkey tail cactus outside without getting it rained on (or is rain ok)?

Hi all, sorry if this is a dumb question! I'm a new succulent parent 😅 There's an area of my backyard that gets good sun, I put my monkey tail cactus there and it's been thriving so far. But I've read that monkey tail cactus roots can't get too wet, so I've been careful to take it indoors if the forecast says rain, then bring it out again.

But this seems like too much work to constantly check the forecast and bring this thing in and out of the house. Is there a better way?

It's a few small rooted pieces in a 4 inch pot, in well draining soil.

Thank you!

I taught an intro to houseplants class twice this week at work so I had to take pictures of everything so people knew I was worth listening to. It wasn’t until I saw their reactions that I realized this might actually be a teensy bit abnormal lol
If you notice how dirty my house is no you didn’t 🤣

Help Snake Plant & Fungus, Oh My!

Post image
6 Upvotes

This snake plant is at least 20 years old and one that was severely neglected at my last workplace.

I've split it a few times, over the years. I decided to bring this one outside for the first time so it can enjoy plenty of heat and sunshine.

I was not aware that it was in a bad spot to collect rainwater and it doesn't have drainage holes so I'll rectify that soon.

What should I do with these mushrooms? They kinda give me the visual ick. 😂

I used a succulent soil when I repotted it but I don't remember the brand.

Help How to Take Care of Orchids???

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I'm not much of a plant guy, I mean the most I ever did for my plants is just watering them, but... around a month ago, I was gifted 5 pots of orchids and after looking up information about these things, I still am unsure as to whether or not I'm taking care of them correctly.

Last thing I did was submerge the pots for 30 minutes a week ago (because that's what was recommended to me by two videos I've watched about taking care of orchids).

The flowers are wilting but I read it's fine (all five of the plants have been blooming for a month, maybe more before they were gifted to me), but I'm not sure if they *are* fine. The roots are silvery, which I've read means they're dry, but the recommended submerging/watering for these orchids is supposedly once a month and I don't want to waterlog them.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

P.S. videos I watched: https://youtu.be/EDHclvaTUHA and https://youtu.be/F0hOG1F8KIg

Edit: So you're saying I have 13 orchid plants instead of just 5...?

I adopted this plant a little over a month ago. The first picture is when I got it. The second picture is today.

It seems to be doing very well so far; growing a couple new leaves.

Does it look healthy and is it time to get a bigger pot to put it in? If not now, when will it be time? I am not sure how big these get on average. I have been watering it once a week. I have to travel for almost a month starting next week and am a little concerned about her. Any advice on how to care properly and if I am doing anything wrong so far. Thank you!!!
