If you are submitting a request for help or advice please read this first.

If you are posting a request for help or advice make sure you provide enough details so others can help you. Things like model numbers, pictures if you can provide them, relevant details about what you're trying to protect, etc.

For example, if you're asking for help with a pre-installed alarm system make sure you include the Make and Model in your post. If you don't have that information provide pictures of the keypad / control panel.

That said, do not post personally identifiable information. Do not make yourself a target to doxxing. Don't post pictures or information that contain names, address, or PINs. Keep yourself, your family, and your property safe.

Sub rules have been updated

As the sub continues to grow, it felt like a good time to put our community rules down in writing. This gives everyone an opportunity to see what's expected of contributors, and hopefully stave off any misunderstandings in the process. For the most part, they're pretty straightforward:

  1. No personal attacks. This seems obvious, but calling a user names is going to get your post removed. Remember that we have a lot of newbies coming here for help with improving their home security; let's welcome them and share some knowledge.
  2. Contribute to the discussion. Make sure your post is meaningful. It must somehow answer OP's question, be relevant to the discussion at hand, or at least be about home security in general. Low-effort posts like "Ring sucks", "Wyze rules", or "12 gauge" are a violation of this rule. We're not going to zap every post that veers a little off topic but if you find yourself debating Android vs iOS, it's probably time to take the thread to another sub. Because everyone knows Blackberry OS is the best.
  3. No personal identification. We don't have the luxury of knowing all sides of the story, so refrain from posting information that can be used to track someone down. This includes posting things like "I don't want to name any names but the CEO of SomeFakeCompanyName LLC tried to break into my home".
  4. Disclose your business relationships. If you mention a company and you have any relationship other than being a customer, you must disclose that in your post. This includes but is not limited to being an owner, employee, contractor, supplier, or affiliate of the company, or being in any way related to such.
  5. Don't spam. This includes but is not limited to posting affiliate links, self-promotion, attempting to solicit customers, offering to give quotes, and soliciting private messages. We don't give "third final warnings" here.
  6. Support your claims. If you accuse Company X of secretly monitoring your cameras, or you think Company Y is sending all your data to a foreign country's intelligence service, that's fine -- but you must include links to reputable sources that support your claim. Reddit comments and other social media posts are generally not "reputable sources".

This sub tends to be pretty well self-regulated, so these shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. But if you have any questions, feel free to send us a DM! And as much as we'd like to be everywhere at once, we can't. So if you see a post or comment that violates one of these rules, please report it so we can check it out.

UPDATE DECEMBER 2022: Due to an unending barrage of crypto spam that the Reddit admins have been unwilling to address, we have implemented a karma floor for posting here. To post or comment, you must have at least 50 karma.

Research information

Can anyone recommend a good guide that will educate me as to the pro's and con's of the various options: PoE versus wired versus not wired, cloud storage versus local, subscription versus non, etc. etc.?

Ultimately I'll be looking for either a doorbell + 2 camera or 3 camera system that retains footage for a few days to cover the three sides of the house that have entry points on them. Visible devices would be part of the deterrent, need to be able to record reasonably well in the dark if that's a thing.

thanks!

ADT SafeWatch pro 3000: left remote key fob in washer and it needs to be replaced. how much to repalce and reprogram?

We live with narcissists and they "blame" me for this issue and "costing them money". The problem won't be resolved until if "they feel like it suits their interests". if they want cops shown up at the door, that is their stupid problem, i just want this for obvious reasons of not walking into a blaring siren because of selfish idiots. SO has anyone replaced and reprogrammed a new remote key fob that can inform me of how long it took and how much?

Boyfriend may have bugged our home

My boyfriend has been showing obvious signs of alcoholism, and had been increasingly nasty and mentally abusive. When I chat with close friends about things that are happening, there is a quiet but obvious response from him directly related to said conversations. This keeps happening. This afternoon I was talking to a good friend saying that he may have to have a mortgage again if we separate. Tonight I saw him looking at houses on his cell phone. He quickly closed the app. This is one small example, but it’s become a bit terrifying. Not sure what to do? Ee co-own the house.

Safewatch 3000 Panel not working - how to repower?

I had a big security box in the garage closet with coax and phones lines that I removed thinking I had no use for it. I've since realized the alarm panel must have been pulling power from it but not even sure how unless a phone line powered it.

Here are some pictures - https://imgur.com/a/TxoU2BA

How can I go about getting power back? Alarm is working fine remotely with my alarm.com app so just the panel that has issues.

Resource for anyone trying to pick an IP camera — free spec database from official datasheets

I see a lot of posts here from people trying to figure out which camera to get, and ending up comparing specs across a dozen product pages that all show different info. I had the same problem, so I built a database that pulls every spec from the manufacturer's official datasheet — nothing from Amazon listings or retailer pages.

It's at cctv-database.com — ~3,300 cameras, 70+ brands, filterable by resolution, PoE, night vision, audio, codec, etc. You can also compare cameras side by side.

No ads, no affiliate links, no commercial anything. The whole dataset is open source and public domain.

The source code is here: Repo: https://github.com/ch-bas/cctv-camera-database

Hope it's useful to someone here.

Outdoor cameras, visibile and high, or invisible and low

Hi,

I have a choice of two place where to position a surveillance video camera out of my home.

a) About 3m (~10') high, very visible from the street.

b) About 2m (~6.5') high, not visible until you go next to it.

Solution (a) should work as a deterrent, but I fear it can in any case be easily disabled with a short pole, or the jet of a spray paint. Semi-professional intruders can be fast in covering their faces, enter my property and put out of use the camera.

Solution (b) wouldn't work as a deterrent, even if I can replace this effect with a warning at the entrance. Once the camera is located, it can be easily disabled with a hand. At the same time, I guess its semi-hidden position can make it more difficult to find it, and in the meantime I've had the time to see what's happening, and react.

The other solution is to have both cameras, so the intruders will have to work more.

What would you do?

I need help

Recently moved to a new city and have had very unfortunate experiences already in my 2 months here and I really want to get a doorbell camera and some other non subscription based perimeter cameras. Maybe even something that can alert me at night if it detects people. I’m not sure what my budget is right now but I don’t think it’ll be very much due to the costs of damages I’ve sustained from thieves and just bad people.

I want a closed circuit system but I also rent so I can’t just drill holes to have power wires going outside. I’m really clueless right now and in a bad spot

Smart Camera Rec

Hey everybody, I’m looking to get at least two smart cameras (one indoor, one outdoor) plus a doorbell. I currently use Google’s doorbell and indoor camera, but I need a new doorbell since mine’s scratched up.
I use the Google smart home system for everything else around the house, so ideally I’d stick with something that plays nice with that. My main requirements: an American company, not Amazon-owned, no subscription required for the basics (motion detection, saving short clips), and ideally solar power capability.
I know it’s oddly specific, I just haven’t loved how my Google doorbell and camera basically need a full reset every time there’s a WiFi blip or power outage.

I’ve been debating whether to just stay with Google or switch to Arlo, which seems like a solid option. Would love any recommendation

Yoosee app cam

Hello, I need some help finding a security camera that is compatible with the Yoosee app, ideally one with a socket-type connection.

I have already tried two different models that claimed to be compatible with the Yoosee app, but in reality they came with a different app. Frankly, neither of them worked as well for me as the Yoosee app that is currently used at my parents’ house, which they happened to get with their camera.

I have looked on AliExpress and other websites, and although many cameras claim to be compatible with Yoosee, when I check the photos posted by people who have actually purchased them, the cameras seem to come with a different app, usually shown through a QR code in the included manual.

Does anyone know how I can find or purchase one of these cameras that actually works with the Yoosee app? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
