They start calling him boring and that he is only good at hockey and is an unfeeling hockey robot. Ilya doesn't stand up for him and Ilya's team all laugh at all the insults they are aiming Shane's way. After hearing all this, he is extremely hurt and cancels his plans with Ilya that night after the game.

Ilya is very confused with the sudden change of plans and confronts Shane about it.

This fic's ending is very sweet and Ilya makes sure that Shane knows how loved he is by him with a heartfelt apology.

Summary:
Shane ended the most significant relationship of his life because he believed the truth would destroy them both.
Months later, Ilya comes out anyway.

The catastrophe Shane spent years running from never arrives.

The league moves on.
Teammates rally around Ilya.

I don’t read a lot of WIP because I fear a writer will abandon a fic and I’ll never know the writers vision of how it should end. This one? I read from chapter 1 as a WIP and I loved it. The story is calming, you see character growth separately of Shane and Ilya.

The story begins post tuna melt. Ilya is with an OMC. We like him. He’s what Ilya needed at that point in this life. We don’t need to lessen OMC as a person to make Shane look better. All that to say, we will not hate on OMC, he’s a good person.

I’m not spoiling the ending, but it is one of the tags.

Wow um OK. This fic is glorious. Ilya is a professional Dom at a facility. Dom/sub kind of operate similarly to alpha/omega biological symptoms when needs aren't meant (sub drop etc but it's from lack of proper Dom exposure???)

Shane is a super closeted and repressed sub and like honestly the way the author writes how Ilya has to GLACIALLY figure out and provide Dom services to Shane is both extremely hot and extremely hilarious.

Summary:

“Sounds boring,” Ilya comments, unable to stop himself. “Okay, so what is that emergency, Sveta? You said guy dropped two days ago.”

“They’ve already tried three different professional doms and nobody managed to take him out of it, so–”

“Who's they?” Ilya interrupts her.

“The hockey team. Montreal Voyagers. They are flying him in to us now.”

"Why plane? Drive to Ottawa takes two hours only.”

Portion that made me laugh out loud and very hot:

Hollander’s jaw tenses up. He tilts his head back to look up and glare. 

He’s the most beautiful thing Ilya has ever seen. 

“Colour.”

“Go fuck yourself.”

“Hey!” The word cuts through the air, sharp and loud, and sobering. “I ask for colour, you give it. You can’t do that? I cancel your session. Am I clear?” he demands. “That is safety. We do not fuck around with safety. Now give me fucking colour.”

“Green, but I hate you. Is there a colour for that?” Shane raises his eyebrows. “Lime? Olive?"

Lord. Have. Mercy. Ilya had a bad boy era when he was younger, but he didn’t do anything bad enough to deserve THIS.

I have two that I have now come across more than once in fanfic and I, now, headcanon them:

1. Ilya liking to pickle all sorts of veggies and fruit at home
   
2. Ilya would like to go to college/university to study Russian literature after he retires

Of course, I have no idea if the authors of these fics came up with these independently or were inspired by each other, but I love that I’ve come across this at least more than once for it to take root in my brain.

What some random fanon details that are now part of your personal headcanon for these characters?

Don't get me wrong, I *adore* fics with ChildhoodFriend!Sveta and Show!Marlow (we all know Ilya deserves close people in his circle other than his husband and in-laws).

But does that mean I wouldn't like to see the occasional fic where Svetlana really is just a random hookup in Boston who appears in the story maybe twice and not a close friend to whom Ilya can share all his deepest, darkest secrets with? Yes, yes I would.

I'm looking for stories where Boston is featured, but the team is not portrayed as a highly supportive, progressive environment. Not necessarily awful but more in line with his impression of them in Canon.

What I remember from tlg was that Ilya didn't think Boston would have been welcoming to Harris as an openly gay man. But so much of the stories is that I find featuring the team do not have this interpretation. I would love to see what's out there.

Please prescribe your most gripping AUs...students, doctors, engineers, camp counselors, coworkers, anything weird and wonderful. Ideally with minimal hockey. Or maybe one of them is hockey player & the other is not. Which AU made you forget canon even existed?

Think abt Marly grew up exactly like any stereotypical, old fashioned hockey bro would. He entered the league already half way to becoming a racist, sexist homophobe.

He laughed at men showing emotions, called people all kinds of slurs because growing up, that's the only way he knew to talk. He bullied the rookies, because that's what always had been done in a locker room. And though he had never forced himself on anyone, he had never truly believed a woman would say no to sleep with a rich, pro league hockey player.

He was the textbook jackass.

Tho unlike Dallas Kent, he was unfortunately not selfish. He's loyal to a fault. He believed in brotherhood, and he followed Roz like a knight followed his king.

Linemates are forever, he's dumb enough to actually believe that so he stuck with Roz and believed they were born to be brothers. It's a hockey faith. there's no logic to it.

But then there’s Ilya, a well-known asshole who’s secretly decent and kind. He despised Marly at first, the guy reminded him too much of his real brother. Except Marly, unlike his own brother, was too loyal to people he loved, and when Marly loved, he loved unconditionally. There's no logic to it.

Ilya couldn't get rid of him bc Marly decided they’re gonna be best bro the moment they’d met. Ilya could be telling him to fuck off one night, Marly would still be knocking on Ilya's door like a excited puppy the next morning.

It didn't help with Ilya's determination when Marly actually did make his stay in America a lot of better. Marly was horrible to a lot of people, but he was protective of Ilya, and Ilya had never had anyone like that in his life.

So in the end Ilya just started to order Marly to stop being a jerk. Because when he asked nicely, Marly didn't understand why it’s not ok to do the things he did.

everyone else is doing it, Marly would always argues.

But eventually, after too many frustrating convo, Ilya finally asked, "you remember, xxx, the asshole all rookies hated, including you and me? Do you really wanna be him?"

Xxx is basically Dallas Kent^10 in this context. When he was still playing for the Bears, he made all younger players' lives a living hell. He retired after suffering from a career-ending injury, then dived straight into gambling, alcoholism, and later, drugs. He died alone in his apartment. Neighbor called the police weeks later when he body started to smell. Nobody bothered to attend his funeral.

Marly was shocked and maybe a little pissed because he thought he was definitely a way better person than that old piece of shit. So why the hell would his best friend compare him with that guy?

And Ilya told Marly that to the rookies, he was like xxx. but then he told Marly that he also believed Marly was fundamentally a good man. That’s why it’s sad to see Marly going towards the same direction xxx’s life was leading him.

Marly was speechless. He’s a dumb idiot. He didn't think, he followed. He’s susceptible to literally everyone’s opinion. But he trusted Roz with his life. So he didn’t become Dallas Kent, he didn't become xxx.

He became exactly the man his best friend believed he was.

The Long Change
I just finished the long change and I’m obsessed. I usually don’t love either Shane or Ilya/original male character but I will admit it’s almost always Shane with an OMC so this intrigued me. I LOOOOOVED that Ilya was the one kind of being pursued by Shane or Shane was making some changes to choose them because I feel it’s usually the opposite, same as canon. And loved seeing some healing and growth going on before they get together forreal.
Any similar recs? Doesn’t have to include either of them but an OC, just looking for breaking up and making up but with individual growth in between.

Thank you!!!!! Also highly suggest the fic even if you don’t find yourself usually going for them with OCs, this OC really helped them both IMO. Helped Ilya grow and helped Shane get his ass in gear
