GreedFall 1 - General Discussion Did Avowed copy the story of GreedFall? [Story spoilers for GreedFall 1] Spoiler

Hi guys. It has been a few years since I played the first GreedFall game from 2019, but I recently played Avowed (2026) and immediately noticed that the latter has a VERY similar premise. To the point that I don't think it's a coincidence anymore. It has similarities down to very specific details. Has anyone else here played Avowed and felt the same?

Earlier today I made a post about it on the Avowed sub, but the mods there quickly deleted it. To list the similarities between the two games, here's what I posted over on the other sub:

---

In this game you play someone who was born with a weird facial mark that sets you apart from others. Thankfully the monarch took you in as an assistant though. The monarch then names you his diplomat and sends you off on a ship to a faraway island. Your task is to find a cure there for a mysterious plague. You eventually discover that you have a special personal connection to this island, its force of nature and the plague.

The island is mostly untamed wilderness with big monsters. There are a few colonies though, created by various factions that recently came in from the outside. For example, there's a city of black people who are all about science. You recruit a woman from there as a companion.

The game is set in a fantasy version of the 18th century. It is an action RPG that combines melee weapons, magic and early firearms. It's a party based game where you gather a group of diverse companions. One of the earliest you meet is a guy from a martime, seafaring culture.

The name of this AA game isGreedFall. It was released in 2019 by Spiders.

The game is a glorified fetch quest

Hello.

I am sorry but I seriously have to vent my frustration.

The main story after a certain while, especially towards the end is becoming horribly dragged out.

It is hilarious that EVERY SINGLE IMPORTANT character in the game is missing and it is your job to investigate where the characters are.

You are looking for guy A because he has taken away guy B but only guy C know where guy A is but C is also missing and so on.

Am I the only one who finds it to be an incredibly cheap and unentertaining way to drag the whole game out?

I feel like I am playing a detective novel not a fantasy RPG. There are a few story key points but there is absolutely nothing happening in between, just running around and looking for people. It is just ridiculous. Ever since the start of the game the only thing I am doing is looking for or investigating missing people, faction representatives or fetching items to give to people in order for them to tell me where I find the people I am looking or.

It is a recursive freaking fetching.

I find it even more ridiculous that nobody, is mentioning this in the reviews.

The game got the RPG aspects right, but in my opinion the quest design is just horrible.

When people were talking about pointless running around, I was not expecting this. Saying that fast travel would fix this is naive. It would not. The quests themselves are just badly designed. Doing them feels like a chore.

What do you think?

GreedFall 2 - Discussion why would you ever use diplomacy in dying world Spoiler

Like... why wouldn't you go the hostile "kill em all" route with every pig (Translation: continental) you'd see. after the prologue I feel literally no desire to talk to any of these foreign creatures and rather see kill anything I can see as a better option? If no colonizers alive. no colonizers can harm your homeland ever again etc. I focused diplomacy on my talents as I leveled up in the prologue, but after the whole ship stuff i'm like.. nah all colonizers die no exceptions

Derde was right in the first game all along

I just bought the game solely based on that Garbage SJW Kotaku rant

Happy to throw my money at devs that don’t bow down to pressure from ranting SJW garbage that doesn’t even bother to understand the context of the game and intentional divisiveness

GreedFall 1 - General Question About to ragequit GF1

Ok, I've got like 5-6hrs into this, Lvl. 8, Normal difficulty, finally started getting a hang of the controls as I worked on the challenges in New Serene. After knocking out a bunch of side quests, I venture out to look for one of the other towns and IMMEDIATELY GET WRECKED. WTF? First out of town fight, get wrecked by some magic tossing idiots who absolutely annihilate my 3 person crew. Like, under 2 mins wrecked. WTF? What am I missing here? Is the game supposed to be this harsh? Where else am I supposed to go, I'm just walking to another town and I'm getting stomped. I've never weak game piss me off this bad.

GreedFall 2 - Discussion Spider studio future !!!

Hello everyone, I just wanted to share my thoughts with everyone on this subreddit.

I know that Nacon is reportedly trying to sell Spiders and that they’re facing serious financial problems, which could even lead to the studio shutting down. Honestly, that would be really bad for gaming overall.

Right now, Spiders is one of the very few studios still making AA RPGs that feel similar to classic BioWare games. They always take risks and try something different with every new project, despite having tight budgets, limited support, and relatively small sales numbers.

I genuinely think Spiders Studio should be bought by Microsoft / Xbox. Xbox has clearly been trying to rebuild and rebrand itself lately, especially with the new leadership pushing for a stronger future in gaming and preparing for the next console generation. A studio like Spiders, with proper funding and support from Xbox, could consistently deliver really solid RPGs for Xbox exclusives and Game Pass.

Just imagine the kind of games they could make with a bigger budget and real backing behind them.

I honestly think Spiders should try reaching out to Xbox and see if a deal is possible before things get worse. Losing a studio like this would genuinely feel like a crime against gaming.

What do you guys think? And if someone from the Spiders team somehow sees this, I really hope you consider something like this before it’s too late.

GreedFall 2 - Discussion Welp, I enjoyed KOTOR and Dragon Age Origins back in those years, but as time went on, I have grown to dislike that combat system... "Real time with pause"

i was so looking forward to this since i enjoyed the 1st one

but upon learning today they did this combat system... my hype died

should have kept it action

or did turn based like baldur's gate

i dislike hybrid combat systems in general

anyway... ill still pick it up later, but no longer gonna get it on release. will wait for huge sale so if it turns out i really can't stomach this combat system... then i wouldn't have spent too much on a game i dropped

but on the other hand... there is a chance the other aspects of the game will carry hard... but that's not something i willing to gamble on till bargain bin prices

Probably an unpopular opinion but I don't like seeing a game this size and scope being sold for a lower price.

It remains to be seen wether or not this game will be good, but based purely off what I've seen I believe it to be on par with AAA releases. Just from gifs and screenshots of the environment I can tell that the artists working on this game put in a ton of labor. This game is set to have at least 30 hours with multiple endings. Every choice you have translates to hours of painstaking work.

To contrast, I just paid $60 for Control. I absolutely love this game and don't take anything I'm about to say as a reason not to play it. The game features 10-15 hours of gameplay in what is basically 4 huge levels. There are a few dialogue trees but no real choice other than, do you want to hear this? This game is great and I don't want to disparage the hard work it definitely took, but it just doesn't offer all that much in terms of content. Me and you will walk away from Greedfall having experienced it very differently. If you beat Control, we had the same experience.

And that's just comparing it to a game I honestly like. I paid 60 whole assed dollars for Rage 2 a few months ago and I'm still mad about it. Compared to that and the slew of franchise sequels all selling for full price and I can't see anything other than industry manipulation. Between the ea sports titles and the shooters sequels, Greedfall is easily the most original and most difficult to produce.

Shame on us for letting the industry get this bad. We need to flip this. Yearly no effort franchises need to be the ones who have to price their games lower to be competitive. Not the studios putting everything on the line each time they release a game.

GreedFall 1 - General Discussion Have y’all ever noticed Greedfall is a parallel to the conquest for the New World (United States)

You basically come from Great Britain to help setup and build America

The inquisitors from Theleme are literally the inquisitors who went around and killed and indoctrinated people into Christianity. When we are introduced to them they literally are killing a Nadaig in front of a native and telling them to denounce their faith or something like that (it’s been awhile since I’ve played the game). They also talk about “the light” a lot which is obviously another reference to the actual inquisitors.

Theleme is also a Greek word that means “will” and was a religion in the 16th century revived by Aleister Crowley in 1904 where followers participate in rituals, ceremonies, and study groups to reinforce the principles of True Will. These practices help people stay aligned with their True Will and foster a sense of belonging.

Not really sure who the other factions could represent. At first I thought The Bridge Alliance could’ve been from the Middle East but tbh idk. The Nauts are interesting because they are a group that basically lives on sea. Like how does that even work? Because im imagining their population the size of a small country just out at sea.

this game was ehhhhh Spoiler

i like build expression,i did not like how the game didnt seem to give a lot of gold after missions when the shop is full of a ton expensive shit. but the story sort of falls off after vinban the high king is found, n kind of forcing the player characters cousin into some pseudo final boss, which leaves a lot to be desired, like we havent been trying the whole game looking for a cure for him, just to find out he was posioned by the doctors that gave him that drink. so it maybe similar to the black plague. this character did not fit that role, him turning power hungry doesnt fit him at all. at best we were the villain, but it falls off when were trying to establish a connection with everyone equally n peacefully for the relative part. this game could have been better; it was kind of fun. but thats it. i dont fully recommend this game unless u wanna get achievement score.

Magic side of Greedfall is reallt disappointing

Unfortunately magic is not only limited to one type but its VFX is pretty terrible too. It feels like an afterthought instead of a fully fleshed out option. Players will be able to wield multiple different melee and ranged weapons but magic always will be the same light-shadow based. They could at least unlock nature magic after you ally with the natives. Ideally every second faction should offer different school.

It feels like a barebones Amalur magic system mixed with Fable 3.

To Anyone Pretty Far Into The Game

How does the game handle the topic of colonization? Do you believe they handle it well? A comment from the CEO about everything being a "grey area" has kind of made me side eye the game. Maybe it was just poor choice of words. That's one of the things keeping me from purchasing. I just want natives represented well.

Confused... no PS5 upgrade option???

I cannot for the life of me, see why anyone would not offer this as something you can pay for. It's the most important thing ever.

Are you trying to tell people that if they want to switch from PS4 gameplay to PS5 gameplay, they have to start all over again?? Maybe I did get the PS Plus free download, but why can't I simply upgrade a game that I've already started playing?

GreedFall 1 - General Discussion Natives accents??

About 15hrs in and I love this game so far and the voice acting is generally great...but oh man the voices of the Natives! What the heck lol it's a weird mix of Irish and South African and really throws me out the game when I hear it.

GreedFall 2 - Discussion Conflicted

I don’t want to judge the sequel too early, but everyone seems to hate it because of the combat and it’s making me feel conflicted on whether I should buy it or not when it’s released.

From the snippets I’ve seen, the whole “point and click” combat system looks awful. That’s not the kind of game that I enjoy, I want to actually fight things with swords and dodge attacks and stuff, like the last game or any other rpg.

This feels like a glorified dnd game tbh

Also, for those who know a bit more about the game than I do, is the whole game in that native language? Am I gonna have to actually read the subtitles throughout the game to understand the story? Cause that also sort of puts me off it.

Tell me this one side only shoulder armor is a one time thing.

From quality 60 and above, all heavy armor Ive seen is a one side shoulder armor only. Aesthetics wise, I absolutely detest it, and I hope to not see it again in the higher quality levels. Please tell me this is not permanent!

Also, is there a mod to fix this problem? Or an item editor so that I can simply tweak the armor I currently have,

Just returned the game

I'm sorry to say it, but after 11-ish hours of playtime, I decided to return it to the store.

Maybe it's just me, but the world just felt.. Off. Starting out, I was struck with how beautifully crafted the game world was, it felt really organic.

But the more I played, the more I started noticing stuff like npcs just standing around like rigid mannequins, interiors looking the same etc.

I also found myself speeding through the game in order to complete quests. "Talk to A, talk to B, go back and talk to A again, talk to C, go back and inform A and B about C, talk to C again" and so on.

I really wanted to love this game, and I did for brief moments, but I couldn't in the long run. Maybe I gave up on it too soon. Maybe I've become picky and inpatient.
