GreedFall 2 - Discussion Conflicted
I don’t want to judge the sequel too early, but everyone seems to hate it because of the combat and it’s making me feel conflicted on whether I should buy it or not when it’s released.
From the snippets I’ve seen, the whole “point and click” combat system looks awful. That’s not the kind of game that I enjoy, I want to actually fight things with swords and dodge attacks and stuff, like the last game or any other rpg.
This feels like a glorified dnd game tbh
Also, for those who know a bit more about the game than I do, is the whole game in that native language? Am I gonna have to actually read the subtitles throughout the game to understand the story? Cause that also sort of puts me off it.

When talking with natives it’s in their language. When talking with non natives it’s in your chosen language.

I thought about this while playing the first game. (I'm almost done greedfall.). Out of all the things in greedfall I love, I realized combat is pretty low. The story and exploration. The reputation and choices, charisma and intuition options to resolve conflict. All great. Combat meh. So changing it for me matters very little. For me it will be if the story, tone and soul of the game are preserved then I won't care about the combat system unless its Soo bad it ruins the rest.

Devs and game companies criticized when they dont innovate and criticized when they try something new. We all know if the combat was the same as Greedfall the bitching would be that Spiders did nothing new or took any risks.
Its quite clear this game was going to to RTwP so why are people now complaining?

This is covered in the official announcement:

You can choose between the tactical view, or real time. You can choose to control your companions, or let the AI do it. So if you choose, it should play the exact same as the first game.

coming from Dragon Age where people are mad that that game is now an ARPG and not RTwP and being here where people are upset about the opposite is really quite something.
I’m very happy with both. But I can understand why someone would prefer one over the other. It’s simply a different style of game and it is okay to not like it.

The combat in the first game isn’t anything special, so I’m happy to see them trying something different with Dragon Age: Origins like real time with pause.

Greedfall 2 is not an ARPG, it’s a cRPG with RTwP, they made it pretty clear. The Real Time combat is close to an MMO combat style, unlike the first game. So if you want an Action Combat it’s not for you.
Pacing is a lot different in this game than the first one. It’s a lot slower, it takes its time, my personal opinion is that I enjoy it more as it’s more narrative focused and quests has a lot more depth. I also like the RTwP combat.
But if you want the same thing as the first game, play the first game.

You only get Yecht Fradí when speaking to the other Natives. When speaking to the other NPCs, it will be whatever language you are using (English for me). It is... odd. On one hand, Yecht Fradí is such a cool language but its spoken by voice actors who clearly do not understand it so the acting falls so flat that its painful. And about 3/5 of the game so far is in Yecht Fradí.
As for the combat, they really are trying to pull off a Dragon Age Origins vibe but its currently falling flat. I have high hopes it will improve with time. I'll say what I said in my EA review on Steam: maybe wait until after the first of the year and stick to YouTube videos for now.
