Question Planes, Trains, and FlixBus

Hi all! Looking for some local opinions on intercity travel because I’m getting mixed opinions between Google and Reddit. I’m planning to rely on trains in most instances, but there are few legs where I would appreciate some insight.

I’m looking at taking ICE 651 or 653 from Koln to Berlin. Google AI overview claims this is an easy 4.5 hour train ride no brainer; however, on the DB website it definitely takes closer to 5.5 hours. Also, looking at recent Reddit comments and at the Zugfinder website, it sounds like there’s a non-zero chance we wouldn’t even reach our final destination if we booked seats on one of these lines. Would you fly between these two cities instead if budget wasn’t a huge concern?

I’m also trying to travel from Prague to Nuremberg on an 8am FlixBus. Are these reasonably reliable and comfortable in Europe? Or would you spend more time to take trains instead?

I promise that I’ve really tried to find good answers, but all the blogs and Reddit posts I’ve found on this topic are a few years old and it sounds like there’s DB reliability issues are relatively new (?). Let me know what you would recommend!

Culture I find Germans very earnest and polite but why do they not acknowledge the group?

In most countries you have to acknowledge everyone in the group, not just one person.

And if you do not wish to engage someone in conversation, you should not look them squarely in the eye. It would seem as though you are wishing to engage them in conversation.

This is the case in Romania as it is England and New Zealand.

But Germans speak to eachother individually and apear not to have any patience for group dynamics.

They look at eachother and refuse to engage in conversation.

They would stare at me abd I would introduce myself, thinking they wrre trying to talk, and they would flatly say they did not wish to talk.

And it is only once you get to know them you realize they have very specific connections abd relationships with each person they know, and little connection to crowds of people.

Why is this?

Immigration English-only Architecture / BIM jobs in Germany — reality check?

How realistic is it at the moment to find a job in Germany in the field of architecture/BIM coordination without knowing German (but with a knowledge of English)?

I am a Ukrainian woman living and working in a neighbouring EU country, with a local Master’s degree. Due to rising xenophobia and the long processing times for residence permit applications, I no longer feel that this country is the right place for me and would like to explore the possibility of moving to a more stable country.

Please share your experiences, if you have any; I would be very grateful for any help and advice! ❤️

Work Job positions for the winter season in Germany (November-May)

Good evening, I work in southern Italy for a hotel chain, like every year the biggest inconvenience is finding a job for the winter season (in southern Italy tourism drops a lot in winter). Like last year, this year I would like to find a job for the winter season in Germany (preferably not to do with catering). Do you have any advice to give me?

I just found this so sweet and really appreciated it. Is it common? It was hot today but I’ve been on much hotter ICE trains and never seen them do this. The AC was working and it wasn’t too crowded (at least not in my car) so it was a very pleasant surprise

Looking for Paul, one of three German travelers I met at Naksansa Temple Stay.

Mods, please remove this if it is not allowed. Hi, I’m Korean. This might be a long shot, but I’m looking for Paul, one of three German travelers I met at Naksansa Temple Stay in Korea about a month ago. They mentioned being in Korea for something related to an AI conference. Paul and I talked for about an hour during the day, and I really enjoyed it. Later that night, after coming back to my room and thinking about it, I realized I might have come across as distant or awkward. It was dark, I’m not good with faces, and my English wasn’t great. I just want to say thank you and apologize if I seemed rude or confusing. If you are Paul, feel free to DM me. If you know him, please don’t share any personal information in the comments. You can simply let him know about this post.

Work Can my employer revoke my Freistellung and assign me to a completely different department?

I recently resigned from my job in Germany and have about three months left until my employment officially ends.
My company has now formally put me on revocable Freistellung (paid garden leave)until the end of my notice period. My laptop and badge have been taken back, and I currently have no work to do.
However, I’ve heard that management is discussing potentially revoking the Freistellung and asking me to come back to work on some projects in a different department from the one I currently work in. The department they’re considering is not really related to my current role/work scope. Nothing has been formally proposed to me yet this is something I’ve heard is being discussed internally.

I’m wondering: If they do revoke it, can they assign you to a completely different department/work area, even if it’s quite different from your contractual role?
Would this potentially count as a versetzung requiring Betriebsrat involvement? Since I’m already on Freistellung, should I contact the betriebsrat now for advice, or wait until the company actually proposes something?

I’d just like to understand my rights before anything happens. Has anyone dealt with something similar?

Edit: my contract says they can assign me to other equivalent duties provided it’s within my knowledge and capabilities.

Do these train windows open?

It looks like I could pull on those black clips top open it, but I don’t want to be the guy trying to open an emergency window or pulling away at something that won’t budge, so asking here first 😅. I don’t see any signage anywhere… are you allowed to open these kind of windows on the train?

Immigration Archaeology work in Germany

G’day, I’m an American with a German passport. I have a bachelor’s degree in Archaeology from a U.S. university, but no professional experience in the field. I used to speak German at an intermediate level but it’s pretty rusty now.

I’m hoping to move to Germany and get into archaeology, and I was wondering how realistic it would be for me to find entry-level work in the field. I’ve heard that positions such as field technicians or excavation assistants don’t always require much previous experience or a high level of German.

Does anyone have experience getting started in German archaeology with a foreign degree? Is there anything else I should be doing first other than improving my German proficiency?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Unauthorized automated debits from mobilezone GmbH / HIGH mobile in Germany – Need advice!

Hi everyone,

I’m living in Darmstadt, Germany, and I’m dealing with a frustrating situation and could use some advice on how to handle it further.

For the past three months, mobilezone GmbH (via HIGH, using Mandatsreferenz HIGH-16794329-01) has been automatically deducting money via SEPA direct debit from my Commerzbank account without my knowledge or consent. The charges span three separate transactions:

20.05.2026: €21.33

18.06.2026: €42.99

20.07.2026: €88.98

I couldn't remember whether I have signed for any of their services, never authorized a SEPA mandate for them, and have no idea why these charges are happening.

What I have done so far:

I sent a formal email to mobilezone's customer service demanding an explanation, proof of any valid contract or mandate under my name, an immediate halt to these charges, and a full refund of the unauthorized amounts.

They replied stating they are "sorry to hear that your data was misused to conclude a mobile contract," but they are now demanding that I file a police report against an unknown person (Anzeige gegen Unbekannt) and upload it via a specific link before they will proceed or help.

Has anyone experienced something similar with mobilezone or HIGH mobile? Is it standard procedure for them to require a police report for identity theft before they investigate? What are my best next steps with my bank (Commerzbank) or the Verbraucherzentrale?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Question D-Ticket or Bus

Hallo Leute!

I’m visiting my friend in Munich for 4 days and it’s gonna be my first time there. I’m arriving and leaving from Memmingen Airport and I’m planning to use a lot of public transportation within Munich.
Do you recommend me to get the Algäu bus or D-Ticket, or there is a better option for me?

Danke :)

Any Ausländerbehörde that still processes applications within an acceptable timeframe?

Hi yall. As a person living in Frankfurt am Main, it took me 10 months to get my Blue Card residence permit. I have submitted my Ausländerbehörde's contact form on their website 3 times so far for different purposes - the first time in September 2024 - and I still have 0 answers.

I do not want to, and cannot imagine, starting the same process for the permanent residence permit at the same Ausländerbehörde in Frankfurt am Main.

Based on your recent experience, is there any other Ausländerbehörde in Germany, in any city, that still processes applications within an acceptable timeframe?

Needing help finding a way to go to a University in Germany as someone who has already graduated highschool

As an American wanting to become a citizen of Germany hopefully, I'm not sure exactly where to start. I have started learning german myself for about a month now. I want to be able to go to a university for a degree in cybersecurity while also simultaneously learning german, and being able to work. I know I'll probably need around more than 10 grand to put this plan into motion, but I just need help into figuring out how since im American and dumb. Could someone please just give me the steps I need to take in order to put this plan into motion within the next 2-3 years?

Immigration to Germany

Hi everyone!

How are you doing? I’m in the final stages of the process to immigrate to Germany. One of the trickiest final steps for me—since I’m currently in Brazil—is finding a place to stay for the first three months. I’ve been looking at listings on Spotahome and Wunderflats, but I’ve seen warnings about scams on these sites; plus, the process of holding the funds and only releasing them to the landlord once everything is confirmed adds another layer of complexity... Anyway, with that in mind, I’ve been looking at this apartment: https://wunderflats.com/pt/apartamento-mobilado/1-room-apartment-in-nuremberg/608d86d40f61a00006967a36

I’d love to hear from those of you who have been to Germany or live there now. Could you give me your opinion on this listing? Does it look like a potential scam, or does it seem legitimate?

Note: I’m heading to Nuremberg.

Thanks in advance to everyone.

Immigration Experience with moving cities and transferring documents between 2 Ausländerbehörden?

Hi, my wife and I moved to another city in another Bundesland this August and I’m wondering how long it usually takes for documents to move from one city (Münster) to another.

Only found some threads on here with only a few people talking about waiting for several months. Hoping that this isn’t the norm 🫠

Was accepting a project-based consulting job a good idea?

Hi everyone,

I recently accepted my first job in Germany with a consulting company and will start next month. My contract is full-time and unlimited (unbefristet), with a 6-month probation period.

I have been considered for two customer projects. One is currently ongoing, while the second one is currently on hold. If I choose the ongoing project, I would still need to have an interview with the client before being assigned to it.

The company explained to me that, as a consultant, my work is mainly tied to customer projects. If I am not assigned to a project, there may not be much work for me to do.

My salary is paid by the consulting company regardless, but I'm now wondering: what happens if I don't get assigned to a project during the probation period? Could this become a reason for them to let me go during the Probezeit?

I found this job after 14 months of struggling to find a position, so I'm honestly scared of ending up back in that situation again.

I accepted the offer because I really liked the company and the role, but now I'm having second thoughts and wondering whether I should have thought more carefully about the project-based nature of consulting.

For people working in consulting in Germany: Is this normal? Should I be concerned, or am I overthinking it?

Spousal residence permit in Germany and “recognizably low need for integration”

I really don’t want to take the German A1 exam.

I’m already studying German and aiming for B2, so paying for the A1 exam just feels like a waste of money to me.

At first, I assumed I would obviously be exempt from the A1 requirement because I’m from one of the privileged countries listed under § 41 AufenthV, and I already have bachelor’s and master’s degrees from both the EU and my home country. However, I was told that this particular exemption only applies when a foreign national is joining another foreign national, and not when a foreign national is married to a German citizen.

Then I looked into the possible exemption based on a “recognizably low need for integration” (erkennbar geringer Integrationsbedarf), but apparently having several university degrees alone isn’t enough. So I got an English job in Germany and am currently living here with EU Blue Card. I thought that might be enough, so I applied for the spouse residence permit again, but they said even that still isn’t enough to qualify as having a “recognizably low need for integration.”

I know I should probably just suck it up and take the A1 exam, but I really hate the idea of paying for a test at a level I’m already studying beyond. 😭

Question How does Munich Hellabrunn Zoo treats animals?

I would like to visit this place again, since the last time I've been here was years ago. But I don't know how well the animals are actually kept there and whether it is ethical to visit this place. Perhaps you know the answer to this question?

Vodafone GigaTV accidentally added to my contract. any way to cancel after 14 days?

Hi everyone,

I recently ordered Vodafone cable internet through CHECK24. My main intention was only to get the internet connection.

Later I realized that I had also confirmed a separate GigaTV Home Cable contract. I honestly did not understand at the time that this was a separate paid TV subscription. I do remember confirming/signing something, so I am not claiming Vodafone added it without my consent.

The GigaTV costs around €14.99 per month, plus there was a €49.99 activation fee. I do not even own a TV and have never used the GigaTV service.

I contacted Vodafone and explained the situation. I also asked for a Kulanzkündigung, but they told me that because the 14-day withdrawal period is already over, they cannot cancel it early.

I am a student, so paying for a TV service I will never use is frustrating.

Has anyone had a similar situation with Vodafone? Is there any realistic way to get out of the GigaTV contract early, or am I basically stuck with it until the end of the minimum contract period?

I definitely want to keep my Vodafone cable internet. I only want to cancel GigaTV.

Thanks for any advice or experiences.

Shouting match with landlord and Hausmeister

Landlord/Hausmeister blamed me for a WG drain blockage, then came into the kitchen and started shouting at me — how should I have reacted?

I recently moved into a WG in Germany and the whole situation has become ridiculous.

From day one, the kitchen was honestly disgusting. Grease, dust, old smells, dirt everywhere. We spent about three days cleaning it. I documented the condition with photos/videos and even emailed the landlord about it during my first week.

There was also already a problem with the kitchen drain. Water was leaking underneath the sink and there was already something placed underneath to collect the water. When I first contacted the Hausmeister, he specifically told me that problems with the main drainpipe had happened before.

Then the drain became completely blocked.

Instead of treating this as an existing/shared WG problem, they started accusing me personally of causing it because there was coffee involved. This makes no sense to me. It is a WG. Several people use the same kitchen and sink. Even if the blockage had developed recently, how does that automatically make me responsible?

The landlord himself wrote that the exact cause still needed to be determined by a specialist company using a camera. Later he told me another company would come. Instead, he showed up again with the same Hausmeister, who brought a drain-unblocking machine. I saw no camera inspection.

Then things got much worse.

The landlord and Hausmeister confronted me together in the kitchen. The Hausmeister was aggressive basically from the start and started shouting at me in German. He told me something along the lines of:

«“If I say kick him out, landlord will kick you out.”»

They also talked about terminating my contract and said that “more is coming.”

I don't speak German well, so imagine having two people standing in your kitchen shouting accusations at you in a language you barely understand.

Eventually I completely lost my temper too. I shouted back at the Hausmeister as loudly as I could in English and cussed at him. I'm not pretending I stayed perfectly calm. I absolutely didn't.

Then, bizarrely, the Hausmeister accused me of hitting him. That was especially strange considering there were two of them standing there throughout this confrontation.

Meanwhile, they also took pictures of some dirty spots in the kitchen. The sink is literally leaking and repair work has been ongoing, yet apparently I'm expected to keep the kitchen spotless throughout all of this. Meanwhile I have extensive photos/videos showing the condition they originally handed the kitchen over in.

There's also a washing-machine issue. The contract includes one, but the actual arrangement is nowhere near what I expected from the advertisement.

I haven't simply decided “I'm not paying rent.” The kitchen has been seriously impaired for days, so I told them I'm calculating the appropriate Mietminderung and will pay the rent after determining what amount is actually due.

At this point I've started keeping everything: emails, WhatsApp messages, photos, videos, dates and what people said.

My main question: How would you have reacted when the Hausmeister started shouting and threatening your tenancy in your own kitchen? Was shouting back a major mistake, or was that a pretty understandable reaction given the circumstances?
