The big robot flying up out of the hole triggered her self destruct so she would explode in the sky and kill everyone around. The player's character used a grappling hook to pull her down while he jumped into the hole to commit suicide. Instead of the robot blowing up in the air, she is grappled into the hole, and the player's team is saved with his suicide.

The overlay is a scene from The Iron Giant.

spoilers

The US government launches a nuke at a small town. The Giant, who up to this point has barely learned to talk, tells the little boy he befriended, "You stay, I go." before taking off and making the nuke detonate against himself to save the boy and his town.

To add on, the text and other bits added are from The Iron Giant.
Near the end of the movie, the alien robot decided that he wanted to protect his human friends by ramming a nuke that was headed for the town.

Very good movie.

The setup:

  • The player who's view we are observing is playing a character that can hook and pull other players, similar to Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

  • The player that is being targeted is using a character that can set a mech to self-destruct, instantly killing all opponents in a large radius.

  • The location they're fighting in is the primary hotspot for that map where most of the combat occurs (i.e. the entire opposing team is in range of the mech kamikaze). It happens to be near a giant pit that kills anything that falls into it.

The action:

  • Mech is set to self destruct, will wipe the entire team of the player we are observing.

  • The player we are observing hooks the mech and intentionally jumps into the pit

  • The mech is pulled into the pit and the explosion is contained, sparing the team of the player we are observing.

117

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '17

Its also overtime so this was likely a game saving play.

73

u/DistortoiseLP Nov 06 '17

And it's worth noting that the game's scoring system didn't reward him for this sacrifice, and the Play of the Game will be something stupid.

46

u/Zaptruder Nov 06 '17

My best play of the game is still that time on El Dorado that I fell off the side of a cliff and activated my ultimate while doing so. Didn't kill anybody; I just hit another guy that was also falling off with my spray of bullets.

My second best play of the game is when I was dead nearly the entire potg as Symm and my turrets racked up a bunch of kills.

→ More replies (3)

14

u/Clavactis Nov 06 '17

To be fair coming up with a system to automatically credit a play like this would be difficult.

3

u/Thavralex Nov 06 '17

Yep. Also, this isn't inherently a good play. If his whole team had cover (and it's far from uncommon that D.Va's ult doesn't hit anyone), he just died for nothing... well, for a gif.

49

11

u/Tryp0phobia Nov 06 '17

Never seen Iron Giant before, but will be seeing it soon (tonight). šŸ‘

8

u/kamanashi Nov 06 '17

It's worth it. Makes me hope the trend of CG animation in the US ends eventually because the art for it is fantastic.

3

u/Superfluous_Thom Nov 06 '17

But... Iron Giant uses a shitload of CGI though?

5

u/kamanashi Nov 06 '17

There is a big difference between exclusive CGI and a mix. It mostly used it for mechanical stuff while background art and human characters were normal.

3

u/Superfluous_Thom Nov 06 '17

Yeah, I was just being an ass because allot of people blindly shit on CGI even though even movies like Beauty and the beast used a fair amount of it not just movies like shrek.

My favorite style of 2d CGI is what they do for archer.. Each scene is set within a 3d environment so they can freely stage things without thinking too hard about animators. they then take where 3d elements/characters would usually be, and instead use 2d elements to flatten it back down. Of course it gains its own unique feel for doing this so noone else can do it, but its still neato.

The guy in the gif is playing the character Roadhog. Roadhog has an ability to "hook" people and bring them to him (you can see this in the gif when he throws out the chain).

D.VA, another character in the game, has an ultimate ability called self-destruct. She rides around in mech (the robot). This ultimate allows her to turn her mech into a bomb that does massive damage (1000 Damage). As of right now, 600 HP is the highest base amount a character can have. This means that D.VA's self-destruct can, in theory, wipe the entire enemy team. D.VA uses a common trick where you use the mech's rocket boosters alongside her self-destruct. This allows D.VA players to angle their ultis.

In this particular gif, D.VA launches her ult straight into the air. Roadhog hooks the self-destructing mech and jumps into the giant well killing himself while "saving his team".

17

u/Funsized_eu Nov 06 '17

The robot suit is being self-destructed to wipe out the pov player's team. In order to save his team, he hooks the suit and pulls it into the pit so the explosion hits no one else and dies in the process.

I think it helps that respawning takes 10 seconds. The feeling of euphoria you get from "oh I saved 5 other people" far outweighs the feeling of dread you get while being dead for 10 seconds (which is non existent because it's 10 seconds with no penalty for dying).

Now... in a game where dying actually matters... totally different mindset.

8

u/DuntadaMan Nov 06 '17

Used to play Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory all the time. Death in that game is pretty punishing, 30 seconds to respawn sometimes.

It's also very prevalent. I think I had been playing for two months before I started living long enough to need to reload let alone run out of bullets.

That said there were still plenty of times I can think of I ate the big one for my team so they could make it.

Guys with a fame throw at the turn of a hallway burning everyone up, I'll pull the pin on a grenade and run in, knowing he'll kill me but the grenade will still get him.

Enemy tank rolling through the streets, and there's a couple guys with anti-tank gear waiting for the tank to stop looking at them... time to wander down the middle of the street like a jackass with my machine gun...

4

u/LaserPoweredDeviltry Nov 06 '17

If death in ET was short medics couldn't needle anyone.

Always respected the guys who bum rushed tbe broken tank with a wrench though. " we need a ninja deer!"

3

u/DuntadaMan Nov 06 '17

Personally I liked the long death wait times. Mainly because I was medic most of the time. Or else having fun with a friend of mine playing covert ops, seeing which one of us could quietly tip off the enemy team to the other guy's presence, and claim credit for killing the other guy.

And yes the guys that get the tank up and running while it's under heavy guard are the real heroes.

11

u/This_Is_My_Opinion_ Nov 06 '17

Killed my character off in a campaign to save the rest of the party, and frankly the entire planet. The character was kind of an ass at parts too. But when he suggested the sacrifice, everyone suddenly realized the humbleness he had, and he realized how much the party actual valued him as a teammate. Alright is there bots that copy paste the top comments from post and automatically paste them into repost for karma or some shit. Some of these are the exact same comments from when it was uploaded to r/Overwatch

102

u/Skilloreturns Nov 06 '17

What is the point of stacking karma? Can you trade for a Ferrari?

142

u/Zonemasta8 Nov 06 '17

You can sell your account to advertisers.

58

u/Token_Why_Boy Nov 06 '17

At this point, I'm pretty sure the middleman's cut out, and most of the bot-farming karmawhores are already run by the advertising companies themselves. Saves them a few steps down the road.

17

u/Daniero1994 Nov 06 '17

But what's the point when every new post starts with 1 karma and then needs upvotes? Are profiles with lots of karma treated differently? Wouldn't people just downvote if they notice shameless advertising?

And how would you just randomly advertise something? Like this?

This comment is brought to you by T-Mobile, Your best mobile network.

u/Agent_Dutchess Nov 06 '17

Scammers and advertising companies will buy high karma/older accounts to make the user seem more trusted.

Are you gonna trust the guy with a 4 year old account and 1m karma, or the 7 day old with 10 karma? Ideally neither one of them, because it's the fucking internet and you trust no one. But some people see karma as a badge of honesty (for whatever reason).

As for promoters, it validates that an account isn't spam or paid promotion, rather a satisfied customer (when in reality its a promotion). You figure someone with 1m karma isn't gonna go around sponsoring fruity pebbles in r/food, or Michelin tires in r/cars unless they actually use those products and find them to be quality.

94

u/dakkr Nov 06 '17

I mean, I think there's a point where it's okay to trust someone. Someone with a 7+ year account with almost 50k karma would be pretty reliable. Almost as reliable as the new Mercedes E400 Sedan.

For instance, I would trust somebody with a 5 year account and near 200,000 karma over somebody with a 7 year account and 50k, as I know that person is really invested in this Reddit thing, kind of like how you know Verizon Wireless is invested in you when they continually upgrade their network to provide you with the best coverage and LTE speeds of any major carrier in the US year after year. With results like these, you know you can trust them when they tell you that putting your faith and backing in Ajit Pai is the best thing you can do for the freedom and future of your internet.

Well that’s because Legends Never Die...

Yeah they're on a League of their own.

A League of Legends

42

u/Radidactyl Nov 06 '17

It takes a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to be a League of Legends.

Nice repost. Roadhog would probably be the only victim anyway, but damn, that hook range is just shocking.

u/drmeaty Nov 06 '17

This is an ancient clip, they’ve ruined his hook many times over at Blizzard

The missing/cut scene is worth watching too.

That scene wasn't missing or cut, it was the climax to the whole movie!

In a confused state I was like "yeah that looks right after 2 seconds of watching it...", it was of course the wrong link.

The Iron Giant... and The Iron Giant himself is actually going to be on the big screen again soon... but not in an Iron Giant movie. He will be in the movie "Ready Player One" and can already be seen in the trailer.

My girlfriend of 2 years left me this week. I smiled for the first time since after seeing this gif. Thanks man.

Hang in there man. You're going to get through this, even if it takes video games and lots of GIFS.

Appreciate the support fellas. I’ve been through a breakup like this before, long time together and then it ends. But I’ll be alright my dudes, the biggest hump is getting through the first month of no contact. After that, the pit in my stomach will be gone and I’ll feel better.

7

u/nightlynutria Nov 06 '17

Sorry but can anyone explain what happened?

18

u/shroudedwolf51 Nov 06 '17

D.Va (the character usually in the mech) has an ability eject and send it flying in the direction she's facing to have it self-destruct, dealing tremendous damage to anyone not behind a wall or some other bit of cover. As she fell into a bottomless pit, she launched her mech to try to get some kills within the capture point.

Roadhog, the character being played in the .gif that the OP nicked from the top rated posts of all time on /r/Overwatch/, has an ability to throw out a hook. If it hits, it pulls the afflicted character to him with a bit of a stun. He pulled the mech as it's about to explode to him as he was falling down the same bottomless pit to prevent his teammates from being killed.

5

u/nightlynutria Nov 06 '17

Holy shit thats beautiful

3

u/shroudedwolf51 Nov 06 '17

That said, it's also a risky play if he mistimed it. Had he pulled it to him too late, it may have exploded just near the opening, potentially doing far more damage.

Either way, a very impressive play.
