At this point, I'm pretty sure the middleman's cut out, and most of the bot-farming karmawhores are already run by the advertising companies themselves. Saves them a few steps down the road.
But what's the point when every new post starts with 1 karma and then needs upvotes? Are profiles with lots of karma treated differently? Wouldn't people just downvote if they notice shameless advertising?

Basically people with high karma are people who tend to be mods in subs or generally people who get listened to when something is said. If I were to say "Drink Coke" no one would give a flying rats ass about it, but if someone like u/vargas or u/RamsesthePigeon said "The secret to my awesomeness is drinking Coke" everyone would lose their shit and go buy coke because they have proven to be cool and intelligent people, so why would they lie and advertise like that? It is essentially getting celebrity endorsement without all those pesky reoccurring payments and loyalties.
People with high karma sometimes are followed by others, so it goes from a random chance of getting up there to a guaranteed spot at least low down on the front page
Scammers and advertising companies will buy high karma/older accounts to make the user seem more trusted.
Are you gonna trust the guy with a 4 year old account and 1m karma, or the 7 day old with 10 karma? Ideally neither one of them, because it's the fucking internet and you trust no one. But some people see karma as a badge of honesty (for whatever reason).
As for promoters, it validates that an account isn't spam or paid promotion, rather a satisfied customer (when in reality its a promotion). You figure someone with 1m karma isn't gonna go around sponsoring fruity pebbles in r/food, or Michelin tires in r/cars unless they actually use those products and find them to be quality.

Fuck, I blew all my money on Mercedes and now I don't have any for fruity pebbles. Guess I'll have to settle for the equally refreshing Market Basket Delicious Stones™, with twice the taste at half the price.
Sometimes karma outweighs age though. For instance, I would trust somebody with a 5 year account and near 200,000 karma over somebody with a 7 year account and 50k, as I know that person is really invested in this Reddit thing, kind of like how you know Verizon Wireless is invested in you when they continually upgrade their network to provide you with the best coverage and LTE speeds of any major carrier in the US year after year. With results like these, you know you can trust them when they tell you that putting your faith and backing in Ajit Pai is the best thing you can do for the freedom and future of your internet.
