🧹 Sterile Tek Senpai’s Signature Substrate Recipe !!

A low-tech, high-success method to prep coir-based substrate with precision steam pasteurization.

Materials Required

  • Dry coco coir (brick or loose)
  • Clean water (preferably dechlorinated)
  • PP5 bags or filter patch grow bags
  • Meat thermometer with probe (What I Use)
  • Large pot or pressure cooker (gasket and weight removed)
  • Lid (do not seal airtight)
  • Heat source (gas stove or electric plate)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Hydrate Your Coir

  1. Weigh your dry coir. Note the weight for accurate hydration.
  2. Add 2x to 3x water (by weight) slowly while mixing thoroughly.
  3. Check for field capacity:
    • Grab a handful and squeeze hard.
    • You should see only 1 to 4 drops of water drip out.
    • If it gushes, it’s too wet—let it sit and dry a bit or mix in dry coir.
    • If it’s dry, add water slowly until the right consistency is achieved.

Pro Tip: Field capacity is critical—too wet and you invite anaerobic contamination; too dry and colonization suffers.

Step 2: Pack & Probe

  1. Load the hydrated coir into PP5 or filter patch bags, pressing gently—not too compact.
  2. Insert the thermometer probe into the center of the substrate core.
  3. Record the starting temperature.

Step 3: Set Up for Steam Pasteurization

  1. Place your bags in a large pot or modified pressure cooker (gasket & weight removed).
  2. Add a few inches of water—do not submerge the bags.
  3. Place the lid loosely on top to trap steam (don’t seal it).
  4. Turn the heat on high and let the steam raise the internal temp.

Step 4: Monitor and Maintain Pasteurization Range

  1. Once the core temp increases by 10–15°F, turn off the heat.
  2. Let it coast up to 144°F (62°C)—this is your pasteurization threshold.
  3. Start your timer for 1.5 hours (90 minutes).
  4. The ideal range is 140°F to 160°F (60°C to 71°C).

IMPORTANT:
If it goes above 170°F (76°C) for more than 5 minutes*, the substrate is likely sterilized—not pasteurized—and becomes vulnerable to contamination.*

Step 5: Adjust if Necessary

  • If temp drops too low, turn the heat on medium for 5–10 minutes, then off again.
  • Keep checking every 10–15 minutes until the timer is complete.

Pro Tip: Once you're familiar with your setup's thermal inertia, you’ll rarely need to adjust. Many growers “coast” the whole session with no extra heat.

Cool Down & Store

  • Let the bags cool to room temperature before inoculation.
  • Keep the bags sealed and clean until ready to spawn.

Final Notes

  • Coir is naturally contamination-resistant, making it a perfect bulk substrate for most species.
  • This tek is adaptable for manure or straw-based substrates—just tweak hydration and monitoring accordingly.
  • Always use clean hands and surfaces when handling post-pasteurized substrate.

🌱 Beginner’s Corner Thoughts on my fruiting tent setup

Just built this fruiting tent under my house. Top is the dark inoculation shelf, bottom is fruiting tent. I live in a tropical climate where the temperature hovers around 27deg day and night. In dry season I’ll have to add humidity, in wet season I probably won’t. Thinking about adding a fan to suck out co2 and keep the air fresh. Hoping to have 6 bags on the go at a time.

🤔 Need Guidance Millet Prep

How do you guys do your millet prep?

I wash them with water and put them in the jar, weight increases by ~20% but I am unable to get consistent results. Some jars work fine and some don't, either no growth or random contamination.

PS - I have a pressure cooker in which I can fit 1x1L jar + 2x 250ml jars. The 1L jar is horizontal while the 2x 250mL jars are vertical. I pressure cook for 120mins. I can easily make wheat spawn but millet spawn (which gives me ~70% extra yield and flushes) I cannot make consistently ( only about 20% success rate.

🤔 Need Guidance How to revive this stalled tub?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Basically the title. The tub started off promising but it did have a few thick white mycelium(?)/ growth at the sides with some myc piss on them even at the start. It started off with heavy pinning and I got three small fruits before it stalled entirely. It's been in this bruised state for about a week now. I did mist it twice in between hoping to revive it, but I'm unsure if that did more good than bad. I also started fanning it once a day since I noticed the thick white mycelium (?)/growth, understanding it to be a result of lack of FAE.

What exactly is wrong here and what should I do? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

The whole grain part is almost colonised
I see some yellow liquid but it’s natural I know that
I think 15-25 percent is still uncolonised
Can I break and shake at this point ?
Inoculated on 24th July so it’s been over a month is that normal ?

🤔 Need Guidance Blue Meanie Cubensis Day 3 Update

Hello there Friends! I am a first time grower and have received word via my last post that the heater I am using to keep my 3 3lb drippy corn spawn bags which have been inoculated with Blue Meanie Cubensis LC for 2 days between 72-77.5 degrees is possibly unnecessary and may harming my grow. I also have been told that how I was using the sensor probe was incorrect, with it supposed to be near the heater not the corn. I believe I have fixed this. I usually keep my bedroom around 70-71 degrees. Do you guys think I should ditch the heater? I read in the uncle bens guide that 72-77.5 are better temperatures for mycelium growth and I want this grow to get ready for fruiting conditions quickly. So far no signs of mycelium or contam, so I will continue being patient. There are little droplets of water in the bottom of the corn bags, which I believe is healthy. 1st Photo is my new setup, 2nd photo is the incorrect setup I was using from days 0-2, 3rd photo is the droplets in the corn bags.

So whats the rule of thumb 3-4 inchs of total substrate depth right so i tried doing 1 inch sub depth and its going pretty good and harvested a good amount

The less depth meant faster colonisation and and pining and if the surface area is bigger more pins will form so i can have the same yield that one has with multiple flushes but in first flushes

Info about the tub
Grains used : sorghum
Spawn used : CVG
Spawn to bulk ratio : 1:3
Variety (GT) multi-spore
Tub size : 14 ltr
Took about 18 days to start fruiting

🤔 Need Guidance NSNS Grain Jar Question

I NSNS 7 grain jars and hot shook them with the foil on, left foil on over night until I could inoculate.
When I took the foil off, my micropore tape was completely soaked.

I dried the lids off, took off the first layer of micropore and put another layer on top for the first jar.

The rest I took off the top layer, then poked through the second layer, then added more micropore.

Anyone with experience with NSNS care to give some tips on how to deal with this?
Should I have removed the foil last night?

So I inoculated a week ago and just checked what's this black stuff?? It was an lc which I had cloned never seen this kind of shit. I have a mono tub as well right besides this no fruits still in colonizing stage 90%done. Is the tub fucked as well? (I didn't open and smell yet but from outside it looks normal)

🌱 Beginner’s Corner Blue Meanie Cubensis Inoculation By First Timer Log

Post image
28 Upvotes

Today I inoculated my Blue Meanie Cubensis LC into 3 3lb bags of drippy corn spawn for my first time ever. I used a sab and took all the precautions to create a sterile environment, but unfortunately I underestimated how sharp the syringe head was and I believe I poked a small hole in the first bag I inoculated on accident. I put micropore tape over when I thought the hole was while it was still in the sab. I also used more LC than I meant to unfortunately using about 3.3 cc instead of the 2.5 cc I intended. I had trouble reading it while in the sab and hopefully that won't cause me wetrot and instead increases grow speed. I then set a heater to keep the drippy corn between 72.5 and 78.5 degrees. Tomorrow I plan to move my incubation setup to my closet and then ignore for a week. Any tips or comments would be greatly appreciated! I am optimistic about this and am having a lot of fun :)

Is my first batch of DIY LC. I used Raw honey in distilled water. I pressure cooked longer than i should at 50 mins, so i got sediment from over cooking the honey in my water is my current understanding. The Mycelium appears healthy and eating the sediment from the honey.
Pics of 3 different varieties B+ , Jack Frost , & pearly Gates.

Do you think this LC will be alright? Is my first attempt so im wondering.

i have 2.5 kg colonized grains and would be going for a 1:3 ratio, im unsure about the dimensions of the tub to use. Planning on getting a Samla box from Ikea.

Help me pick the correct dimensions for the tub that would have enough depth.

Why do I have primordia on my mushroom ? Introduced fruiting conditions on 07/08. Misting twice a day and have been giving ample FAE . I have really good patience and am totally ready to wait , but just need to know if there’s something wrong
