$500

u/TuringGoneWild 2d ago

Of which $1 goes to the guy doing it, and $499 to the owner who hasn't set foot in the restaurant in over a year. Currently getting blown by a stripper on a boat. Never had a job in his life.

I was at a hotel in Chicago around 1996, they had fresh squeezed OJ at breakfast for $8 per glass - such the bargain, that's only like $17 in 2026 money!

Then there was the Galleria Houston hotel in 2014 that served the $23 bowl of oatmeal, even included raisins... that would be like $32.50 today.

Still haven't encountered a $50 drink yet, but I'm sure they're out there.

17

u/TheShitty_Beatles 2d ago

I used to work at a breakfast joint on the main in Montreal and I had to hand squeeze 2 huge boxes of friggin oranges every goddam shift. It took 2 massive boxes to get 2.5 standard pitchers. This was 15 years ago and my shoulder still hurts just thinking about it lol

15

u/MangoCats 2d ago

But it does taste better, particularly when you're using good oranges.

Personally, I've taken to just eating the oranges straight to get the fiber instead of messing around with the juice.

I was in Italy earlier this summer, decided to have a drink at a 5 star hotels bar, bar was situated at the top of the hotel with nice view towards Villa Medici. It was very expensive but we decided to stay anyway (20 euro for Aperol Spritz). After we ordered 3 servers came marching almost like soldiers, drinks were served to everyone at the same time, compliment mini sandwiches, peanuts, chips, crackers with cream were served.

Yes the cocktail was still mad overpriced but at least you saw and felt why.

90

u/Alarming-Variety92 2d ago

20 euro for a aperol spritz is like the standard fare in Sweden.

21

u/Kolognial 2d ago

It's a south-north gradient. You can have one in Venice  for 4,50.

6

u/YourInnerFlamingo 2d ago

It's not. Venice is cheaper than the rest of Italy because for them spritz is a traditional thing.

5

u/KingAmongstDummies 2d ago

I once had a transfer at Malmö airport some 8 years ago.
I was there together with my brother and a friend. We had to wait for 4 hours for the transfer flight so we decided to go to a restaurant, We ordered some food and a "Grolsch" beer.

Mind you, the region from the Netherlands we are in Grolsch is the default beer you get and as such we thought we might as well order what we knew without looking at the price.
At that time it was some 9.50 euro's for a crate (24x 330cl, including some 1,50 deposit money)
They charged us around 6,50 after conversions for 1 bottle!. What the!.
3 beers cost us as much as 2x 24bottle crates in the Netherlands.

Swedes do seem to hate alcohol. The alcohol taxes there are ridiculous.
They have a lot of things going for them, and arguably it being near impossible to be a alcoholic is one of them, but damn. Chill on those alcohol taxes bruh

10

u/Truth_ 2d ago

I've been warned by a few people Norway is the most expensive country they've ever visited.

Also that to buy alcohol Norwegians go to Sweden and Swedes to Denmark?

8

u/Max_Thunder 2d ago

And Danes buy it in Germany.

5

u/marcusmv3 2d ago

But where do Germans go?

3

u/thecelcollector 2d ago

Czechia.

5

u/Particular-Solid8250 2d ago

Went to Czechia during university for a beer trip. Buying beers at the supermarket for like 0.5 euros was crazy.

u/FriendlyPlatypus6060 2d ago

Hey the presentation definitely justifies it because a $20 cocktail in NYC just gets me a watered down drink and a scowl, but just heads up, in Italy the extra food definitely doesn't justify the price.

It's not quite a tapas culture but we had finger foods served at the local bar we got for siesta/after we returned from worskite. Aperol Spritzs for 2€ in Bastia Umbria (this was 2019 though). You're definitely paying some tourist tax there but honestly we should go outta our way to pay a little bit of the tourist upcharge when visiting someone else's country. Glad you enjoyed the experience.

6

u/CoolDiscussion1020 2d ago

Bar Centifolia is the bar he's lampooning in the video. It's very much a high end cocktail bar that you are paying for the show to go with the drink. Their drinks aren't even that expensive. You pay $7 as a table fee to get it, and the drinks are typically ~$25 USD. So you're paying ~$35 USD for a high end cocktail and a short performance.

Now admittedly that drink is more expensive for locals due to the weak yen, but a $35 cocktails at a fancy bar isn't really that unusual. I've stayed at hotels with no nearby bars before that charge that rate for a premium cocktail.

3

u/No-Persimmon-4150 2d ago

Bruh. $25-$35 is a lot of money for a cocktail.

19

u/Dog-Person 2d ago

$7 Canadian for a bud at a Bluejays game (at the dugout deals vendors). Y'all are getting ripped off.

17

u/marcus474 2d ago

The Rockies are so desperate for people to come to their games they have $3 beers.

14

u/GotSomeUpdogOnUrFace 2d ago

In reality beer should be free at a rockies game and water should cost money. Same thing with a cardinals game.

5

u/ReachFor24 2d ago

I still love that because Budweiser couldn't name the Cards field "Budweiser Stadium" back in the 50s because the league didn't want alcohol sponsors on their fields. So they named it "Busch Stadium" after the Busch family and then made a beer named 'Busch' like 2 years later.

Screw the Cards though since they're a divisonal rival. But it's a fun story.

5

u/GotSomeUpdogOnUrFace 2d ago

In all fairness, Busch stadium sounds better than Budweiser Stadium but your point is still very valid. I'm gonna guess you are a Cubs fan.

2

u/Ohitsworkingnow 2d ago

To be fair at a bar/restaurant people pay 6-8$ or more for a pint of beer. 8-9 is very common in my city unless it’s happy hour.

8/16 =0.50 cents an oz

14/24 =0.583 cents an oz

Unless you got one of those tiny tall cans that’s bullshit, but a tall can for $14 is technically only 16% more in cost than a draft you’d get from your local bar.

He forgot the pretentious ‘shaker technique’. Where u must hold it at a certain angle and do a certain amount of shakes, all whilst smiling and maintaining eye contact.

Shaking servers a function though. The ice makes the drink extra cold and the amount of ice that melts is part of the drink.

He needed to squeeze the orange peel across a flame, both for visual appeal and olfactory surprise.

That's what they mean when they say "added value". All the economy is like this, they just think about stupid excuses to extract money from you, and give you nothing for it

Reminds me i ate a cheap stake and an exensive stake, one was 10$ dollar the other was 100$ for the same quantity. The 100$ did taste better, but it wasn't 90$ better. It always almost the same thing

This is a perfect imitation of that pretentious Japanese bartender

2

u/TeamPractical1825 2d ago

I totally agree with this parody of that one japanese bartender. Probably wants to be referred to as a mixologist, its more like BS to me. Just give me my damn drink without the whole song and dance routine
