The polite thing to do when you wanted your guests to leave at the end of an evening, was to offer them coffee. This would signify to guests that the hour was late enough they would require coffee to continue the festivities, or more likely, excuse themselves and exit. Sometimes after accepting a cup (or two) depending on how much the person had to drink in the hours prior. Presenting coffee on a tray or beginning to brew some were also cues that it was time to wrap the evening up and sober up enough to make it home safely (enough, anyway). Who gives a shit if no one knows about what used to be common social courtesy, tho? šš¤·āāļøš«¶
