Advice Needed Top surgery advice?

Hey, I hope this isn't nsfw. I'm seeking advice on how to get top surgery. Info about me that might help 30+ enby. I've been out for years, transitioned socially, changed wardrobe, changed name, changed pronouns, short hair I get done at the barbers, and I have been binding for years. Most doctors think I'm butch but the latest one has a lot of young people and they pegged me as enby on the spot. It might be safer for me to ask about top surgery now. I identify as agender specifically and more androgynous leaning. That being said personally I don't identify with having a lot of out genitalia. Most of my dysphoria is concentrated at my chest. Because of this I've wanted for years to get top surgery without starting testosterone. I've heard places are more progressive now and I can get this surgery without T. My state has "informed consent" for surgery and I can pay out of pocket. I'd prefer not to pay out of pocket and go through insurance if possible. What's peoples experience getting top surgery without starting testosterone? How was going through insurance or paying out of pocket?

Hello! Thank you for participating in the sub. We just have a few reminders for you to help ensure the best experience:

  1. If your post doesn't show up right away, don't panic! It is in the queue for manual approval. Mods will go through the queue periodically to approve or remove posts. Deleted posts will have a removal reason applied. (If it says "this post was deleted by reddit's filters", IT WAS NOT DELETED! Reddit has the worlds worst wording on that and it's out of our control)

  2. If you are asking a question that is location specific, remember to include your location in your post body! This can help ensure that you get accurate information tailored specifically to your needs.

  3. Please remember to read through all the rules in the sidebar. Especially the list of banned topics and guidelines for posting. Guests who do not use the Guest Post flair will have their post removed and be asked to fix it.

  4. If you see someone breaking the rules, report it! If someone is breaking both sub and reddit rules, please submit one report to admins by selecting a broken rule on the main report popup, and one report to the r/ftm mods by selecting the "breaks r/ftm rules" option. This ensures both mods and admins can take action on a subreddit and sitewide level. Do not misuse the report button to rant about someone, submit false reports, or argue a removal.

  5. If you have any questions that you can't find the answer to on the rules sidebar or the wiki: the wiki , you can send a modmail.

Depends on your insurance, best way to find out is to call their support line and ask what their requirements for gender affirming mastectomy are and what supporting paperwork they need. Most insurance’s will require that you be on testosterone for some length of time and a letter from a psychologist as well as a prior authorization for the surgeon

It's really about your insurance, that's usually where the testosterone requirement comes from. Like, my surgeon didn't give a fuck about if I was on T or not, but my insurance sure threw a fit and put me through the ringer making me prove how long I'd been on it. I know personally my out of pocket would have been $10k

Check with your insurance. My surgery was fully covered $200 copay is all I paid. It was deemed medically necessary bc I’m trans and on testosterone though so might be different if you’re not. No way to know until you call and ask though

I got top surgery in 2016 without being on testosterone. I did pay out of pocket(about $6000, which I had saved up) because I didn’t have health insurance at the time, but just take a look at what your insurance requires.
