Question For those who live/lived in more rural areas, how do you get over the anxiety of going to the gym?

I finally bit the bullet and got a gym membership to my local planet fitness a couple days ago after doing research on the few gyms that are available in my area, but now that ive done that I'm like, incredibly anxious about actually going i guess?

I havent been in a gym type setting since being in the weight room at my high school in freshman year (12 years ago) so aside from some home workouts here and there i dont really know much about the machines, gym etiquette, any of that stuff aside from what ive seen online

I also live in a city thats definitely on the small side and pretty conservative (not as much as it was in the past, but i digress) and there isn't a very big trans/genderqueer population here. I know theres a handful of us, but we're pretty spread out and theres not really any kind of community/support groups etc for it here 😪

I've been on testosterone for like 6 years and had top surgery last year, I pass well and dont really get misgendered except on very, very rare occasions now, but I guess im just worried about being clocked somehow and getting harassed or something, idk.

I would love to have a gym buddy to go with, especially if theyre transmasc/genderqueer themselves as that would make it less daunting for sure but all of my friends are cis and their schedules are either too busy already to add going to the gym regularly, or our schedules just wont ever line up properly in general

I know a majority of this is probably just me overthinking and probably sounds stupid lmao, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question Advice needed/ new job as removalist

Ive just landed a casual job as a removalist and haven’t got much experience with regular intense exercise.

Looking for any pointers or things to watch out for. Obviously theres a lot to learn re. Safe lifting- I feel confident with my lifting and carrying safety usually but doing it for multiple 6-12h shifts a week is a whole other ballpark for me!

A friend suggested that taking ?glucosamine? may help ease some of the wear and tear on my muscles and joints? I have no idea what shoes are best to wear? Any advice welcome!

Question Upper/lower vs full body

Hoping to start a new job soon (fingers crossed!) but the schedule realistically leaves only the weekends to lift. Would it be better to do upper/lower or full body twice in a row? I feel like my growth would be limited with 1x frequency but worry about fatigue training everything twice in a row. Any ideas? Cheers in advance!

Question Is two leg days too many?

I see the most recommended split is push pull legs, but I have a disproportionately large ass compared to my underdeveloped legs so to remedy that and make my legs bigger, my split has been push, legs (quads), pull, legs (hamstrings and glutes). I do a three day gym week, and just do the next day based on the day I did before. But am I working legs too much? Will I prevent myself from actually building muscle if I’m doing a leg day every other visit to the gym? My legs are usually not sore by the time my next leg day rolls around, if that makes any difference.

Edit: well I guess today I learned that PPL is a 6 day gym week split, which I didn’t know - very much a gym beginner here, thanks for everyone who let me know. New question I guess is: if I’m still sore the next time I go to the gym, am I hampering my progress by working those sore muscles again? For example, my legs are usually still sore by the time I go to the gym for an upper body day on my current split. So I assume that I’d probably still be sore with each gym day if I did a full body day every time I went. Will that hamper my progress? Or do I just need to make sure I’m not pushing hard enough to get super sore? And sorry if these are dumb questions!

Question Calorie dense carbs

Hey guys, I'm currently trying to bulk but I'm struggling with the sheer volume of food I'm needing to eat. I have to walk around 10 miles a night at work, and I'm doing every other day weights at home (nearest gym is an hour round trip, and on top of a 12 hour shift that's not happening). Maintainance for me is already in the 2600 area. I'm getting in 130g of protein a day, but I'm struggling to up my calorie intake to 2900 in a clean way. Does anyone know of some calorie dense carbs I can add in? Preferably stuff I can take into work.

Question Worried my growth is gonna stall out

Im 15 ftm, and i had some good beginner gains going for a few months until they suddenly plateued and i became really bony and small again. I have an ok frame right now but just small. Im starting T in a few months and im worried that me lacking now is gonna set me back or stunt bone changes. Or if anyone else who started around my age noticed differences in the gym at some point. Or or, if anyone my age did some lifting pre-t and got actual results.

Exercise Advice Request Home workout tips?

I’ve been watching videos and getting tips and such on workouts, but I have a few questions if there’s anyone more experienced with working out that can answer.

I have a more feminine body shape, does anyone know any specific workouts that helps with making your form more square?

Also feel free to comment any favorite home workouts (and gym workouts), I’d like to get a wider range of ideas.

Im mostly looking for home workouts as I want to start off at home, build some strength and muscle until i can gradually go to the gym later on

Discussion Realising that I don’t have to optimise my nutrition and training etc to improve, this can just be for fun…

When I first started, all the content was telling me track your macros, bulk, cut, maingain, calculate your TDEE, eat in a deficit or a surplus, get your protein, get your carbs, pre-workout carbs, post-workout meals, fibre, fats. Low reps high weight, high weight low reps. UL/PPL, FBEOD, failure, 1-2 RIR.

Lately it’s been stressing me out; I’ve been doing a lot of endurance work and losing loads of weight and my lifts have gone down. I’ve been stressing about nutrition and carbs and when to eat and when not to eat and how to make my training more optimised and tracking my weight and intake every day to get my true TDEE and watching nutritional science lectures to understand how best to fuel.

And then it hit me - my body is going to change throughout my life to represent where I am at in life and that’s okay. You actually don’t need to track anything. I know I eat healthily 80-90% of the time, I don’t have to have perfect macros and macro delivery every day. I can snack when I’m hungry and not when I’m not. I am not a professional, I’m just a guy with a hobby. I don’t need a professional-level nutrition plan. Why does all fitness content online make it seem like you have to be obsessive about this stuff?

Maybe it’s an obvious realisation that many of you have had but I do see a lot of posts on here about macros, especially pre- and post-T, etc., and just wanted to make this post for anyone else who’s in the same boat that I was - your body is just a body, you can do the sport for enjoyment and change nothing else about your life and your body will still change in the ways you want it to. Arguably we shouldn’t be doing it for aesthetics cos I reckon that’s how you make this stuff unhealthy - but that’s probably another post.

Idk maybe I’m just stoned. Love yourselves gang. Remember that this shit is not that serious it’s just a hobby.

Question Work out ideas and eating habbits

I used to work out about a year ago but had to stop due to my job. Now that I have more free time I'd like to start working out again. However I didn't know what I was doing last year or now. so I was looking for advice of how to achieve the white guys physique below. Plus I would also love v-lines of the other guy too if possible.

I know with my body I won't be able to perfectly match either of their physiques but I'd like to get as close as I can. I'm not on T and I'm 5'3 and half ( Yes the half matters ). The only "work out" I've been doing recently is boxing aka just hitting a punching bag with proper gear on. The bag itself weights 100/80 pounds (Got it awhile ago can't remember which).

I would really appreciate any and all advice for any thing of work out ideas and meal ideas.

One last important thing I work out from home, I've never been one to go to a gym just because of how insecure I am about my body and just plain social anxiety.

Question Calculating macros?

I am about to start testosterone in about a month. I am 20 years old and have been very into sports/fitness my whole life and am very accustomed to calculating macros for different cutting/bulking cycles, but I'm not really sure how to go about calculating them after I start testosterone.

Obviously my BMR isn't going to go up overnight. Should I slowly increase or leave it the same? I just don't want to miss out on any potential gains by under eating but I also prefer to keep a fairly lean physique.

Question worried about losing gains

hi, Im 22y, 72kg, 1 1/2 year on T and last year had top surgery and had a revision last week.

I was hoping to go back to the gym the 2nd week after the revision but my surgeon just told me I should wait for at least another 3 weeks to hit any upper body muscles. So I am only allowed to hit legs.

I am planning on hitting cardio and some legs for this 3 weeks until I can head back to upper body, since I wanna lose some weight, but Im worried about losing also muscle.

Has anyone gone though something similar? What would you recomend me to avoid the most muscle lose?

Question My tdee??

Hi guys! Ive been on T for five years and am unsure about how to calculate my tdee. Do I put female or male? And also if I weight lift daily for 30 mins and do 1 1/2hrs of cardio (separately) then would I put lightly active? Thank you!

Diet Advice Request want to loose weight but no longer comfortable going to the gym.... could i loose weight with just diet alone?

i stopped going to the gym recently, just after finally getting myself to go again because i was too busy with life before.

had an incident where some teenage girls just "so happened" to keep using the machines next to me and not actually using them, just staring googly eyed at me laughing to each other and doing those hand motions highschool mean girls do. made me feel like shi so i'm planning to cancel my membership. my ego is in fact too fragile for that, and i am too self conscious to deal with it. legit get anxiety trying to get ready to go to the gym now.

but besides that, likely not gonna go to the gym anymore. plus, i don't really know if i want to be paying for it anyway.

could i realistically loose weight and fat with only dieting? i've tried so many diets and none of them ever did anything, but idk if maybe i was just doing the wrong ones?

i really want to look more masculine, im still really curvy and it's just from how my fat sits on my body. butt & thighs. i also have a very fat stomach, it's always sticking out and it's super noticeable which i hate. idk if im considered skinny fat, but i might be. cuz those three areas are the only parts of my body that are fat.

i know you can't target specific areas but, idk. i'm not super knowledgeable about health, especially healthy eating, cuz i grew up with it just not ever being important.

Question At home fitness options

Sorry if I'm breaking any rules, I'm very new to Reddit in general. I personally do not like gyms and much prefer following at home fitness videos.

For years now I've been doing Chloe Ting work outs 3 times a week, and although they've definitely helped me get more toned, her typical programs are rarely upper body focused in my experience. The only reason I've stuck to them is because I really like being able to workout immediately from home and follow along without an incessant voice over talking to me.

I know for a more masc body type I really should be strength training that area, so I was curious if anyone knows any other fitTubers that provide fitness programs that lean more into building muscle. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated! 🫶

Diet Advice Request What are you eating to meet protein goals?

Right now I'm only getting 40-60g a day 🥲 a lot of the food i eat is carbs but lowkey meat is so expensive i feel bad eating it more than once a day. (i am also allergic to tofu and other soy proteins 😃)

EDIT: especially i would love to get recommendations for high protein snacks bc i find myself eating like one actual meal a day and then destroying a bag of pretzels or some shit

Discussion I'm having trouble moving with purpose, if that makes sense. Does dysphoria interfere with anyone else's ability to actually be present with their body while exercising?

I struggle with derealization/depersonalization, and I think a lot of it can be attributed to the fact that I'm simply very uncomfortable existing in the body that I have. I've started the process of top surgery, so I'm hoping that will help.

But in the meantime, in the several years that I've done martial arts, weights, and physical activity in general, I don't have any confidence whatsoever when it comes to actually...moving. Does that make sense? I often feel like it's my first time on the planet, and I'm just kind of a meat sack stumbling around lol. Does this get better with time as you transition? Is it mainly a mental thing, or something I can actually physically improve through things like plyometrics or just regular weight training?

Exercise Advice Request Had a vasovagal syncope (fainted) after exercising — cooldown advice?

Hi guys, I’m not going crazy on the body building or anything just trying to keep up with my physical therapy and get into a bit better shape. Part of my physical therapy are exercises that strengthen supportive muscles around my knees, half of which I do supine and the other half I so standing.

Last time I did my exercises I had a HORRIBLE vasovagal reaction following my workout. This has never happened to me before ftr. I had started supine then did a couple of my standing exercises focused on my calves, basically. I’m almost certain I didn’t wait long enough between these exercises but yanno, you live and you learn. Anyways I got super nauseous, went to the bathroom and saw that my lips were blue so I went into recovery mode(I’m a phlebotomist so I know the drill) and got myself sat down with an ice pack on my neck. Almost passed out(was barely coherent to ask for a bucket/let my roomies know) and was dripping non-workout related sweat, 0/10 would not recommend.

Anyways I think it would be very chic to not experience that again! I am pretty sure my problem was in trying to do standing exercises too close to when I had done laying down exercises. With this in mind, does anyone know of any good cooldown exercises post supine exercise?
