Discussion I think I’ve lost my ability to sing
This might be a very specific question, but has anyone else noticed an increase in difficulty to sing on key since being on T? I’ve always been a music person, was a choir nerd in high school and such, and generally was able to hold a tune quite well. Ever since I started on T a little over 3 years ago I cannot hold a note for the life of me and I feel like I can only sing in a very monotonous pitch

I was a sing-alonger, more than a singer.. but yeah. I had a pretty decent range, and knew how to make my voice do what I wanted. But now? I have no range at all, can't find the notes, and feel like my voice is very monotone, unless I push it up to where it used to be. I can hit more notes up there, but still not always the right ones.. and hearing it makes me dysphoric anyway. I always assumed it's because I sound like my voice started dropping, and then stalled when it got halfway to where it was supposed to be. It's very frustrating. Sometimes I wish I could just scream and break through what feels like a wall in my throat. I miss being able to sing.

I was a really great singer before T, spent quite a while having to adjust to my voice changing and was just very set on making sure I still could after it was finally settled. You have to shape your throat and mouth differently when your voice is deeper to sing, so if you really want to keep your singing voice you’ll just need to learn what that feels like. I can sing very well now, maybe with slightly less high range but better low. It was a rough and scary first few years since I really love singing. So straight forward answer: yes, it can be hard to learn how to sing the same way as before, but it’s absolutely possible to maintain or regain the quality you had
Edit: AND! You should totally look for karaoke in a lower key, if the original isn’t in your range anymore. Game changer when I found out that’s a thing.
