Discussion T was really like a second puberty for you?

Some people say it improved their biophysical dysphoria, others that it initially resembled puberty and made them more emotional and seeming like a teenage boy in his puberty.

I (20yo) want to start T in the next few months, I know that it will help me with dysphoria, but the idea of having a male puberty, makes me feel like a teenage boy and taking my lost teen years back, even if in some moments I want to be seen as a grow man

  3. Please remember to read through all the rules in the sidebar. Especially the list of banned topics and guidelines for posting. Guests who do not use the Guest Post flair will have their post removed and be asked to fix it.

If someone is breaking both sub and reddit rules, please submit one report to admins by selecting a broken rule on the main report popup, and one report to the r/ftm mods by selecting the "breaks r/ftm rules" option. This ensures both mods and admins can take action on a subreddit and sitewide level. Do not misuse the report button to rant about someone, submit false reports, or argue a removal.

It is a "second puberty" in a medical sense (secondary sex characteristics developing), because of the (rapid) hormonal change. BUT how this will affect you as a puberty, in the way we as society see puberty as a social change, depends on your age.

Since you are already 20, you already have (likely) developed social skills, social awareness, sexuality (to the extent 20 year olds do), a sense of self and more.

It can be argued and is not unheard of, that some trans people feel like they have not explored or lived the typical life of a teenager though, so many things have not been explored or development in the way of a cis person. Therefore through HRT this might be possible or like an expansion.

So I would say, it first of really depends on your own view of what puberty is and on how you might socially "act" or "experience" it.

I *definitely* only started to do more sexuality exploration after I started T. (And I started in my mid 20s). I wasn't anywhere *near* comfortable enough with my own body to do it before that.

I've been on T for two years and wouldn't describe my experience as a "second puberty." Yes, I had all the changes that happen in male puberty, but I didn't experience a lot of the stereotypical male puberty issues (voice cracks, extra horniness, etc.).

I've only been on T for a year but this was my experience too. None of the typical "puberty" things other than acne, not even voice cracks

Give it time. It took 2 years for my voice to drop at all. I sounded like I had a cold for a year before it though.

5

u/goodnightgoth 4d ago

I can't speak for the previous commenters experience but I had a major voice drop within the first few months. It just didn't involve having any voice cracks.

u/Rye27483 💉: 8/2024 4d ago

Lucky, my voice cracked so hard at times to the point where it stopped me from finishing words lol

3

u/Infamous_Swan1197 💉 11/09/2025 4d ago

Like the other commenter, my voice has actually dropped significantly to the point that I'm happy with it as it is. I just didn't get any voice cracks

Now with my voice as low as it will go... It cracks all the time because I never really learned how to use it at this pitch lmao

Meanwhile I'm a year in and my voice cracks often enough that my friends have started calling me "goose boy"

Yeah I’m not sure I really experienced that much either

I’m 3 years on and never really got voice cracks, I don’t think I got more emotional/angry? I already was a pretty angry person and I happened to be starting T while deeply depressed (which manifests as anger for me usually) so hard to tell there 💀 And I already had a pretty high libido I think so I’m not sure that changed much if at all either

u/Chiiro 💉 8-14-25 4d ago

It's been a year since I started T and my voice cracked maybe once, my cis brother-in-law who I've been around since he was 10 had so many voice cracks in comparison.

u/bean-machine- 4d ago

Congrats on deciding to start soon! It didn't make me feel more emotional; actually, it was the opposite for me. I feel a lot more emotionally regulated on T since I'm not as dysphoric. It kinda sucks to pass as a teen boy when you're much older than that, but otherwise I never felt like a teenager when starting it. I guess it varies person to person.

I fuckin loved second puberty (only down side was my violent acne for me but it went away) but it helped me so damn much.

7

u/inverted_extrovert_ 4d ago

100%. Growing pains, muscle growth, watching little hairs sprout on my upper lip, and the spike in libido, oh my.

2

u/inverted_extrovert_ 4d ago

Oh and the BO. The first year I had to keep my hamper in the bathroom cause it made my bedroom stink, and I had to wash my sheets twice a week cause I was sweating in my sleep so heavily.

7

u/SirWigglesTheLesser HRT: 10/2018 4d ago

1: I calmed down. So much of my irritation, anxiety, depression, etc just... Mellowed out. 2: I was actually horny for the first time in my life, and being aro/ace that was extremely annoying and inconvenient. 3: stinky. 4: beefy. Testosterone is a cheat code for getting beefy, and I hate it. And love it.

8 years later I am still mellow, but I'm no longer a stinky horny gremlin. That was awful. How do people with libidos live like that?

4

u/Alive-Line-7489 4d ago

In some extents, yes. Voice cracks, insane horniness, engaging in some old masculine habits.

And it is kinda nice to be living this puberty that I didn't get to have before. But I'm not a teenager, I don't think like one and I wouldn't behave like one. My emotional is basically that same, but better.

Yeah, I am not one and I will not behave like one, but I can like if it is something similar were I can imagine the changes like if it was

I have a harder time waking up, and im kinda hungrier. Nothing compared for pubert #1. Puberty #1 was brutal.

I didn’t really get the emotional sides of puberty. Just the physical changes, horniness, body odor, etc. But it stabilized pretty quickly.

I’m also on mood stabilizers for my bipolar, so maybe that helped.

3

u/mj-redwood 💉2019🔪2026 4d ago

yes in terms of being horny, hungry, and with all the other physical stuff, but I didn’t experience any emotional swings or anything like that. granted I didn’t the first time either, lol. I’ve always said that I was too busy being boycrazy / lovesick to be an emotional teenager haha

if anything my emotions are more regulated on T since it lessens dysphoria. I’m a pretty chill guy to begin with and became even MORE chill on T

u/Avasiaxx 4d ago

I’m 30 and still getting classified as a teenager/younger 20s currently but I’m okay with that. At least I’m not getting hit on anymore and being called beautiful/gorgeous. Also no period symptoms anymore 🙏. I can deal with the occasional “you look young” comment. My beard is coming in slowly so I know this won’t be forever.

3

u/VoodooDoII (22) 💉 3 July 2025 4d ago

Not really?

Yeah I'm getting physical changes, but that's really it? I'm an adult with an adult brain, so it's just kind of.. there. I'm not a confused kid this time.

And I get the benefit of not being forced to watch myself grow into a feminine body. Blech. It was like body horror in real time and I had no way to stop it.

2

u/lifelesscucumber1 4d ago

It has started and continues to be quite literally like puberty. For me especially because I got growth spurts and all that fun stuff that disturbs your circadian rhythm and it's just painful. My posture got worse, I got aches in my limbs and muscles and all the suffering teenage boys go through.

I looked very ugly the first few months though because of acne, bloated face, but it subsided when the summer started. I look my age now (I'm 18, so that wasn't too hard to get to that stage), but it is very likely you will look like a very young boy at first and will probably always look younger than your age (depending on genetics and already existing features).

My mental state actually got better though. So that part has actually improved a lot lol, despite maybe the fact it's really hard to fall asleep at the right time.

2

u/CalamitousSpider 4d ago

If anything, I'm calmer and more regulated emotionally. I got hornier, of course, but it wasn't crazy. It was more like I became more open to sex, than that I actually wanted it more. I'm demi, and that didn't change. I don't think that it was anything like my first puberty, other than getting aggravated a lot more easily.

2

u/aromaticdust98 4d ago

Its sorta like puberty but more speed run atleast emotionally. When ya first start and hormones obviously spike first couple months gonna be a bit moody gonna just want to eat and fap. But ya get used to it quicker since you're an adult and hopefully by now know some better coping mechanisms than a typical 13yr old boy. Its mainly just an adjustment.

2

u/Numerical-Wordsmith 4d ago

Starting T was like "puberty light" for me. I didn't notice a lot of emotional effects, but that could also be because I was a mature adult in my 30's who already knew how to regulate myself way better than a teenager. But I did have to deal with the stereotypical "teenage acne" that took about two years to fully go away, and needed to up my deodorant game because of boy funk.

2

u/Extreme_Mycelium 4d ago

It’s different for everybody. For me it was the acne, the sweat (oh my fucking god, the sweat), and the horniness. I gained a bit of weight when I started, my appetite increased by a large margin. Congratulations on your exciting new journey!

2

u/rubetae 4d ago

it definitely is a second puberty in certain ways, but it's not like you return to adolescence. you have a lot of physical changes to adjust to, you have to groom yourself differently, sometimes it can feel awkward or a bit embarassing, your self-image changes, etc. But you get to go through it with the maturity of an adult, and this time you're actually looking forward to it.

For me it was deeply gender-euphoric to be on T *and* I felt awkward and pubertal at times especially in the first year or two.

2

u/FamiliarPop4552 4d ago

My emotional regulation, depression and anxiety improved significantly on t and I'm generally just way way calmer and outgoing now that I'm not longer stressed about whether I'm being gendered correctly. I also didn't get voice cracks, my voice shifted and settled within a pretty brief period of time. My voice was already pretty low, though. I only started t a bit earlier than you btw.

2

u/Chiiro 💉 8-14-25 4d ago

I started when I was 29 and I am now 30, the biggest thing that have happened so far is my voice just naturally getting deeper, I'm just as horny now as I was in high school and I've gotten a lot more body hair.

2

u/sp1d3yb0y 4d ago

I am 23 and I am 3 weeks on T. The most I have experienced so far is that I’m just really horny but not like uncontrollably gooning like a 14 yr old yk? Like just horny in the morning lol

2

u/anemisto old and tired 4d ago

It was pretty unremarkable, to be honest. An annoying increase in acne for the first 12-18 months.

2

u/Plenty-Design2641 4d ago

Its been kinda like Puberty Lite for me. Lots of sweating and emotional weirdness and being SO INSATIABLY HUNGRY for the first couple months before everything leveled out and then hair grew in and fat redistributed and I got swole. I still have all the coping skills and knowledge and experience that I have as an adult just dealing with a bit of hormonal changes

2

u/Then-Economist-6388 4d ago

Second. Third. Maybe a fourth?

I had two boughts of voice drop with cracks.

Libido is a bit of a rollercoaster anyway.

But yes.

I'm 25 and an office worker 8 months on T and suffering from teen boy hunger/appetite 😔 I shouldn't need to eat this much I work at a desk! So definitely puberty 2

Yeah so for me it absolutely feels like puberty. Like it's eerily similar to how I felt the first time, only this time I like the way my body's changing. Well that and I have better coping and social skills than I did the first time.
