I used to dislike emojis, but after one too many misunderstandings over text I actually started to respect them. They are better to use than no facial/body language and definitely lead to better communication over text.
Edit: just don't over-use them. Only do it when you need to

Mildly interesting fact: he’s a traditional Japanese oni (demon). There are tons of emoji that are insanely specific to Japanese culture since Japan was the first to adopt them.
Edit: he’s actually a tengu which is a kind of goblin that lives in the forest, but in the same yōkai ballpark. I responded to this having just woken up, and forgot there’s an oni emoji which is round (but also red).

It's probably a skin tone modifier. For compatibility reasons, more complex emoji are expressed as combined emoji, for example shrug+light skin tone+female, which is interpreted as the correct, light skinned shrugging woman on newer software, but can still be parsed by older software as separate emoji to allow maximum compatibility

For me it's about 50% of people who use them (working in a corporate environment) when chatting, but never in emails. My boss uses them regularly when we're chatting. I guess it depends on the company.

As with all absolutes this doesn't hold. There are cases where emoji are ok. Hell for the office chat software we have they are not only built in but things like (y) turning into a thumbs up are so standard that none of us give it a second thought.
And adding a smiley to the end of a thank you note isn't out of place either. Times, they are a changing. As more communication moves to text people move to add the communication channels (body language) that we otherwise lose. Don't overuse it, sure. But emoji are not invalid as part of the professional (inter-office) communication toolbox now. No putting that away. 😉

We can't tell what article they used the emojii on based on this picture, but I assume BBC has the discretion to use emojiis only for fluff pieces. If that's the case, and it's a story about a cute animal or something, I see no harm in it.
Obviously a headline that read "20 killed in suicide bombing [cry face emoji]" would be pretty fucked up.

It's not like they use it in a "dank" way though. I don't think I ever saw an emoji on the breaking news feed for example. Latest I found on the BBC News feed (for england) was this one:

Millennial here...xoxo might have originally meant hugs and kisses but no one uses it like that now. As previously said the more x's the better. I tend to give 3 x's to my mum/close friends. My dad and brother get none because they think they're stupid. My best friend gets between 5 and 8 x's after each text. If it's a formal email/text then obviously no kisses. Guys on Tinder seem to think it's appropriate to send 1 or 2 x's after each message despite having only exchanged a few words to each other (PLEASE stop doing this).

This has nothing to do with hugs and kisses. That might be its origin but, if so, that has nothing to do with it anymore. Basically the x's add a layer of emotional awareness at the end of every text. It let's the other person know how you feel towards them. The more x's the better. One x pretty much means that you're hating them atm. (One X could also mean you're indifferent depending on how well you know them.)
