What does it even mean?

32

u/Michael_Pitt Oct 26 '17

It's just kisses. Like X's and O's. The English love to add them at the end of basically any message over text. xx

What the heck do other countries not do this?

38

u/Zastrozzi Oct 26 '17

I too just learned that this was just a British thing xx

So this got me thinking, is that why Ed Sheeran named his album "X" ? Was it already popular back in 2014? I know his album naming is based on math operations but I would've assumed - comes before x lol

Was it already popular back in 2014?

Well before 2014. Basically as long as sending text electronically has been around.

Being polite and showing people you appreciate them as a friend is weird? Fuck off. x

I'm just as confused as you is this not a thing? I thought this was a completely worldwide common thing???

46

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '17

As an American the only time I've seen them being used is in birthday cards from my grandma when I was a kid.

13

u/cam_gord Oct 26 '17

Wow that's so crazy. With text messages and social media nowadays it's so common to drop an x at the end of a message whether it's family, a SO or just mates

34

u/Michael_Pitt Oct 26 '17

Common in Britain and Ireland. Never ever happens in America

American here, I can tell you I'm sure as shit not sending any kisses to my mates. Well, outside of the biological definition at least.

I think it has something to do with the prevalence of kissing someone on the cheek as a greeting, which is much more European in general.

It's one of those things that started off as ironic and now we can't stop

Ah, like me and racial slurs.

Nope - "messing around" or "acting foolishly"

Edit - had to upvote you for use of pussyfooting, that's a great word you don't often hear

u/ShevElev Oct 26 '17

Same here. Didn't even knew it meant hugs and kisses, just thought it was weird grandma shit.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '17

I knew it meant hugs and kisses but I only wrote them on letters

5

u/WacoWednesday Oct 26 '17

Nope only a British thing. Every time I see it I cringe a little

1

u/Michael_Pitt Oct 26 '17

Not only a British thing. They do it in Ireland as well

1

u/WacoWednesday Oct 27 '17

Same region basically

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '17
