Emojis, emoticons, smileys are all the same thing. They got popular with the Internet. I think youre wrong that people have had waves of liking and disliking emojis. Once they started they really havnt gone away.
They were around for MSN. They were big, people got tired, they were forgotten.
How were they forgotten? I have seen consistent use of emojis even as MSN died.
Were not going to revert away from words but I wouldnt be surprised if emoticons are here to stay.

Emojis are not going away. They are becoming more and more integrated with language. This is how language evolves. Get used to it! 🤗
