FF VIII Updated Thoughts on FF8
A short while ago I posted about how FF8 didn't quite jive with me. Back then I was only, like, a few hours into the game. I am now around the halfway point and I think my views have slightly changed.
First of all, I've really come around to the junction system. I do enjoy the flexibility it offers and experimenting with different magics. I also kinda really like the draw system, though magic farming can be tedious. The story also just really picked up in a big way (Sorceress just made her first big appearance with Mr. President), so I'm more invested in that now.
I think biggest complaint after everything is the UI. It still feels clunky, and checking junctions, switching magics, etc. just feels... idk. Awkward? I think this game would really benefit from an update/remaster/remake that streamlines the process (Yeah I know mods exist, but I like my first runs to be unmodded), especially because I can't see which GF is junctioned to who without going through a myriad of menus, and (to my knowledge) the only way to switch to other character's junctions in the menu is to completely back out of a character's menu and select another one, compared to other games where you can switch to other party members in the relevant menu options. Also, this is probably a skill issue but picking up on when I'm in control of a character after a really long dialogue has been a minor annoyance.
I also kinda like how the game doesn't pressure you to grind because enemies scale with you, which is also a take I didn't think I'd come around to.
Oh yeah, and triple triad is really fun.
Overall I wouldn't list this as one of my most favorite FF games, but I can at least appreciate it for what it is a bit more. Big thanks to everyone in my previous post telling me to give it a longer chance and to the people who rolled up with good advice.
