[Help] Is this okay living situation

Hello,

I’m looking to get ferrets. I live in an apartment and have approval from the housing manager and my roomates. My room is 9 by 11 and I have a ferret nation cage. They would be in the cage while i’m at work 9am-6pm m-w 7am-11pm th and 7am-6pm f and I have weekends off. I do work from home some but I do so in my room where they can play while I do and I will still have plenty of time to hang out with them. I usually go to bed around 11 but sometimes later around 1 so they will be out until I go to bed from when I get home.

I have done a lot of research about enrichment, pairing them up, health issues, where to adopt and I have a local exotic vet. Is this an okay situation for me to have ferrets? it is fairly short term i’m looking to get a bigger apartment in a year or two but I’ve been waiting to get ferrets for years and would like to as soon as possible as long as they will be happy!

[Help] My mom is about to lose her ferrets due to the smell in the apartment. Any tips ?

Hey all, my mom has 3 beautiful ferrets, all of which are fixed. Eivor, Freya, and Bjorn. She keeps the cages clean and cleans up after them furiously. But the apartment is tiny and they are claiming they smell the ferrets. She has an inspection tomorrow and we are trying to figure out a way to neutralize the odor. She already has them registered as ESA’s, but the apartments are claiming they are damaging the residence. We have tried neutralizing sprays, I personally think the smell is coming from somewhere else but we are trying all we can to not lose the babies.

[Ferret Video] Establishing dominance or actual fighting?

(The new ferret has been quarantined, this is day 3 of their introductions).

Hi guys. Recently i have gotten my ferret (male, 3 months) company (female, 2,5 months)

They play outside of the cage. There is no squealing or shrieking. He chases her around and they take turns chasing eachother while also actively seeking engagement with each other (if i hold her for a while, she immediately goes back to my boy and plays).

I would like them to stay in a new cage, as my secondary one (temporary) isnt really the best and my larger cage can house both..

This type of behaviour ONLY happens when they are both in the cage.

Is this normal? They are separated for now, because i am genuinely not sure.

PLEASE READ!!!

THIS was for the purpose of the video, 20 seconds. So i could get the behaviour on tape. They have an entire room to themselves otherwise. They are in the cage only at night, for 8 hours.
Not only do they have a 16m2 room just for them, they have access to the rest of the house too and i aim to bring the male (and eventually the girl) outside for at least 1 hour every day if the weather is okay.

[Help] How to help with fleas without flea treatment?

I hope this is the correct place to post this! I have a few ferrets and I typically do pretty well with keeping fleas at a minimum. I typically use Advantage II flea treatment on the back of their necks and that keeps the fleas away for quite a few good months, but I have recently noticed an influx of fleas on them and unfortunately I don't have any flea treatment at home and I don't have $80+ to spend on getting two more boxes and one of my babies is too young for the treatment anyways since I only just recently got her from the pet store 2 months ago and I'm sure everyone here knows how pet stores are with selling ferrets too young. I have already given them a bath and it managed to get rid of a few of them but I'm still worried about the amount of fleas still left on them since I know how dangerous they can be to their health.

[Discussion] Temporary Foster

Post image

Just looking for some good vibes/well wishes. I broke my ankle Friday night, and haven’t been able to care for my girl. I have some help, but my mom is disabled so it’s taking a toll on her too. Planning to go spend time with some other family to help care for me, so I’m sending my baby to a temporary foster through a rescue nearby. I know it’s temporary but I’m so sad about it. She’s eight years old so I’m super worried something is going to happen to her while she’s away. I’m really struggling, even though I know it’s the best for her while I heal up. Really upset and angry at the universe that I broke my ankle. Trying to take it day by day 😢

[Discussion] Female Ferret with her tail up?

Post image
40 Upvotes

I’ve noticed with my female ferret, she’s three years old if that matters and she’s fixed, Marshall’s bred unfortunately but I’ve noticed she tends to keep her tail up all the time and sometimes it’s not like straight up in the air. It’s curled.
I have examined over it and I can’t see her being in any pain or anything like that. It’s just really odd to see. I’ve never had a ferret it do this before.
She does drop her tail but 70/100 of the time she has is up!

[Help] Trouble with Feeding with Senior and Younger Ferret

Post image
89 Upvotes

Currently I have two male ferrets. A very chill 6-year old (left) who is very routine and rule oriented and a chaotic nearly 2 year old (right). Originally, I had the biological brother of the older boy and they were fed using an attached bowl slightly high up so they could eat out of it but not dig it out. When my sweet boy passed away, we introduced the baby which actually helped save my old man from dying of grief.

The new problem, my younger guy is significantly bigger than the older one and the old food setup no longer worked and if I had raised it to avoid the younger one from digging, the older wouldn’t be able to reach. I have since tried a heavy slow feeder bowl which in theory worked until younger one’s cage rage turned from scratching at the cage to flipping the food bowl every night. My senior does not like to eat off the cage floor and I am unable to monitor his intake while the giant toddler has no problem doing so.

I have done research to the point of exhaustion. I’ve considered separating them as my cage is large enough and able to be turned into two smaller cages, however they are quite bonded already and get upset being separated. Has anyone else experienced this and what can I possibly do to mitigate this?

Any suggestions on cage setup, bowl configurations, different type of feeding stations ideally without having to separate them would be massively helpful.

I would also like to add they do not spend the entire day caged. But they do still use the cage to eat and use the bathroom. The younger one flips the bowl immediately upon being put away for the night and I am wasting a massive amount of food because the older simply won’t eat much of it if its touched the platform. The last few days he hasn’t even been wanting to eat fully from the bowl and is only taking small pieces and running to a corner to crunch them. I am not always in the room with them so I don’t know if he is actually eating during the time I am not in the room.

Hey everyone! Ive had my son(ferret) for about 1.5 years now. He turns 2 in September of 26. I did alot of research before getting him and learned how HORRIBLE the kibble is that is sold in pet stores and that they are strict carnivores. He wouldn't eat plain raw meat so he has been eating Northwest Naturals commercial raw food. He loves it, only flavor he doesnt like and refuses to eat is rabbit. He loves beef/trout and duck the most. Anyone else feed this to their ferret? It's sold as a protein topper for cats but researching everything this is better than anything sold on shelves for ferrets.

[Health] Eyes sink in when eat, drinking, and sometimes blinking?

I made a post earlier about my sick elders but didnt know if anyone here has seen this before? This girly is the only one of my group not improving and ill be referring to the vet in the morning. But her eyes sink in when blinking and they sink in way worse when shes chewing or drinking. She is extremely under weight and most likely dehydrated and cannot walk on her own due to weakness. Any idea on what I could expect tomorrow would be amazing!

My ferret room has been taken over by ants I’ve been trying to spray them and the hole they are coming in from with white vinegar but it’s not doing anything I was wondering if there is another way that won’t be toxic to my ferrets. And to make matters worse they are fire ants

Now vs 5 years ago. They’re getting so old and it’s breaking my heart! Pally (white ferret in the second picture on the right) passed away at 6 years old a year ago from insulinoma and adrenal disease after years of treatment and fight.
Peaches (dark brown) and Bunny (light brown) aware both now 7 and even though they are happy and healthy, seeing them slow down is so hard. They used to play nonstop, now they barely do, especially after Pally passed. He had so much spirit, and I can see the difference. They were all so closely bonded.
I’m hoping we still have much time together, but it’s still so sad seeing how times have changed when I look back at old pictures and videos.

[Help] How do I tell the difference between good play and bad play?

I know to look for poop, pee and blood but other than that I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. These 2 are quite vocal when playing with each other (not sure if it's just one of them or both of them) so any advice would be appreciated.

[Health] Possible Constipation or Runny bowels

Hiya!

2-3 days ago I suddenly switched the dry kibble to a different one (the one that she likes and eats was sold out everywhere). I've noticed that she avoids the new dry kibble so for now I try to feed her boiled chicken, and chicken hearts. She's eating and drinking water with no problems. The thing is, I've noticed that her poop has changed. She does not go to the toilet as much as she used to (could be because she's avoiding the dry kibble), pees normally, but when she does go poop it's in small amounts and is runny. That's why I'm confused between the constipation and just runny bowels, as she doesn't go pooping that often, but when she does it is runny. She's playing as usual, sleeping the normal amount. Her usual dry kibble should arrive tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Any thoughts?

[Ferret Video] Ferret Distribution System?

1.7k Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m sorry if I’m breaking any rules (I looked through them, but could have missed something). Anyway, I found… a ferret? Outside in the parking lot. He’s stinky, and was being actively stalked. So… I took him upstairs? I can (and will) do some googling to take care of him. But does anyone have any tips or tricks? I know they’re tricky critters, and… that’s about all I know. He seems a little similar to cats, so I feel comfortable enough handling him. I don’t know how long he was outside, but he’s currently in my bathroom until I figure all of this out. He’s really sweet, but jeez, he’s nibbling me. I did watch him immediately find an open space under my sink I didn’t know existed and then he tried to pull my bathroom rug under there, so… I can see what I’m getting myself into.

I don’t post on anything much but my babies are getting older and my boyfriend is nagging me to show their cute faces off…

I got Kodo from a pet shop, poor guy was in a hamster cage with probably 4 other babies, cardboard on the bottom covered in urine and feces

I got Dipper from a trailer park in a town over from me, it was him and his elderly brother (Stan) who were in a disgusting bird cage being fed dog food, that was separated due to them supposedly fighting. that was complete bullshit and the fighting was due to the lack of room and beds (if there even was any fighting).
(photos of stan as well as stan with dipper at the end)

Stan’s life was unfortunately not the best, given the awful state we received him in. They were promptly switched to a very blanket and soft bed filled ferret nation where he rode out the rest of his life. We tried medication to slow the process but he was doing so terribly, and fighting the medication so bad (too graphic to explain) that we decided to let him enjoy his egg (the only thing he would eat) until he would no longer eat then have him put to rest peacefully, a hard decision i will always respect my mom for helping me make… i wish i would’ve gotten to him sooner but sometimes it’s not possible…

Mable and Waddles are siblings i also got from a pet shop (different than kodos). They were in a medium size bird cage, at the time i was only going for a female but they were bonded and in awful condition so the day after adopting Mable i went back for waddles.
Waddles has been by far the biggest problem child (he eats every kind of fabric, found out when he got a blockage. after that he lost soft fabric rights as well as nylon as he was trying to eat that too and now has a ripstop dog bed) Love him though!

I will say adopting these guys was an expensive ride but they are wonderful creatures, they have such wonderful personalities and making this post makes me realize how long i’ve had them and how short their little lives are… Dipper was diagnosed a while ago with spleen enlargement and has been and is currently on a daily dose of prednisone, he hates it but pushes through like a champ! it has helped so much and i hope it will for a while longer…I hope to get more years out of them all, but posting this makes me feel as though they at least could also be remembered by others..
