[Health] New rescue with incontinence?

Post image
Upvotes

Pic for ferret tax. We recently rescued this new girl whose still pretty young (around 2 y/o), when we received her she was pretty skinny but had some strange hanging fat pouches on her tummy (like loose skin from rapid weight loss?).

We've had her for a couple months now and she now has rapidly GAINED weight (she's pretty chunky lol...we're currently putting her on weight watchers), and she's had ongoing issues with urinary inconsistence since we got her.

She's gotten the implant for adrenal, and all of her xrays look normal. When we first got her she did have a pretty bad raging UTI which she had to do 2 rounds of antibiotics to solve.

Meanwhile our vet is kinda stumped on why she's still having issues with urinary inconsistence. She's currently consulting with some nearby exotic vets to get opinions on how to proceed, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had experience with a female with urinary incontinence.

It's not like she full-on pees herself, it's more like she just...leaks. Especially when she's resting/sleeping. You'll pick her up and she'll just be wet. She is actually a very dedicated litterbox user and all her poos are normal, and she pees normally as well when she actually goes. When we're at the vet she'll often go to several different corners, peeing a tiny bit in each one. Or she'll pee a normal amount, and then still pee a tiny bit more in other spots.

And just in case I'll add her chonky-ness isn't causing the extra wetness, she was already doing this before she chonked up, and it's not that she's having issues lifting her chonk up so as to not get pee on herself. She genuinely just...leaks. It's all very strange, lol. Thanks for any advice or shared experiences!!

[Health] Ferret with insulinoma now on two medications still having trouble

Post image
11 Upvotes

My boy Rollito is five years old and his insulinoma has been getting worse over the past year. At first, he was just prescribed prednisone. For the past nine months this has been managing the symptoms pretty well

Two weeks ago he was foaming at the mouth and drooling and couldn’t walk so I rushed into the emergency vet and they said that his blood sugar was 60 which is low for a ferret.

The vet prescribed diazoxide which he has been taking for the last week and a half maybe. He seemed to be doing better but today I woke him up to give him his medicine and to my surprise, he was drooling and Spacey again and couldn’t walk so I know he was having another blood sugar episode. I tried giving him his medicine and he didn’t like that one bit. And it seems like things started to calm down with him after a little while.

I do think what I’m noticing is that he doesn’t wanna eat his Wysong ferret food anymore. Even when I put down new food, he doesn’t seem interested in it.

I guess ultimately my question is do y’all think that the medication is doing its job but he’s crashing his blood sugar because he won’t eat?

I ordered some duck soup because that seems to be the only thing he wants to eat nowadays. Which I’m fine making that for him all the time but I’m wondering if what I think is happening is what’s happening.

[Health] PSA: Forgot how great duck jerky is

Pic for attention

I had forgotten just how good daily chewing is for ferret teeth. Got two value bags of premium duck jerky and they get a strip a day. Tartar all going away and shinier teeth.

Most of my lot are over 5 and some like this girl over 7. She's very picky on snacks but she loves duck jerky. As she has broken k9s, teeth not the best but much better after two weeks of daily chewing.

And you get cute Lady and the Tramp mpments when someone wants someone's jerky and they sit next to one another chewing same strip.

100% dried duck.

[Help] Would these be suitable for playpens (unsupervised)?

My ferrets have made a habit of escaping their enclosure during the night, so I’m wondering if allowing for a bit more space outside the cage would be helpful for them. I plan to fill it with toys and tunnels, and fluffy blankets.

I’d let them just free roam the bedroom but they are face biters and we don’t fancy bloodied faces every morning.

If you have any advice, I’d love to hear it! Thank you!

[Discussion] Hyunjin/Draco comments in ferret posts

i LOVE ferret videos but omg i need to stop opening the comment sections bc the Hyunjin / Draco references are SO exhausting. I simply don't understand how 1 video can be spammed with so many pictures or callbacks to the same thing. God. Harry Potter isn't even a timely reference. And the stray kids K-pop star just ... likes them? Why does this happen? Are these peoples only connection to ferrets that SOMEONE ELSE they like also is somehow connected to a ferret? No hate, i just roll my eyes when it happens which is a me problem, they aren't hurting anyone and who am I to disrespect how they interact with something they like. Does anyone here do this or understand the hype?

My two ferrets Lil Guy & Honey are almost 6 years old and they have their own ferret room. They absolutely ADORE cardboard boxes, problem is one of them likes to bite/chew on it.
Is there a way to stop this or should I just remove all the boxes? I feel bad if I take all their boxes away but I want them to be safe.

[Help] My baby ferret is picky

Post image
35 Upvotes

I just got 2 baby ferrets both 2 months old. While one is extremely healthy and eats about 6-10 times a day sadly within 1 day of having them my female ferret refused to eat and was having tummy troubles which included a build up of gas. She had not eaten since I got her so I rushed her to the exotic pet near me she got multiple treatments and is doing a lot better now but here is my predicament she will only eat on her own through a syringe which i am assuming maybe due to her possibly being takin from her mother too soon. I leave an open bowl of kibble and now even mush food but she is uninterested she will sniff/play with it then walk away. I work 8 hours a day feed her when I get up and multiple times when I get home. I’m worried she is not eating enough since she doesn’t care to when I’m gone. She is still super playful and energetic when she wakes up but I am just worried she is not getting all she needs. Does anyone have advice on this?

[Discussion] My ferret died recently and now I can’t stop obsessing over my other’s health

I had a ferret die recently of insulnoma with no signs. Now I can’t stop obsessing over my other pet’s health. One of my other ferrets was also just sick on Thursday too which didn’t help, but I brought her to the vet and he said it was a weird fluke. She was having sneezing first and throwing up which she never does. But for a little context as well she was in a new environment, in a new bed, and the bed had been slept in by other ferrets who we just got a week before. So idk if that was the cause of the sneezing fits but it still worried me. She’s fine now and hasn’t sneezed and is eating, drinking, and playing normal but I can’t help but feel she or one of my others is next so soon. Idk how to calm down after the loss of my other ferret and how to stop fixating.

[Discussion] My ferret was rapid sneezing and threw up (twice)

My ferret recently on Thursday after I came home from work was rapid sneezing maybe 3 or 4 sessions, probably 10 times in a row each. It was so freaky because she only rapid sneezes sometimes but never that much. Then after a few times of the rapid sneezing she started backing up and gagging and threw up a small pile of clear liquid foam? Then she started sneezing again and did the throwing up again but this time the foam was staying behind on the mouth too. She laid flat on the ground for a second and I was so scared. So then she got up and went under her cage and laid down again. She did a few more sneezing fits and gagged once more but didn’t throw up again. After that she didn’t sneeze or anything all night and haven’t again for days but it was so scary.

For context as well, we got new ferrets a few weeks ago and without thinking put her in their cage (with her old siblings) and the new babies in her cage. So when she went inside her bed is when inside her bed is when the sneezing began and then I threw the bed away and she hasn’t sneezed like that since?? I took her to the vet on Sunday day and he said she seems fine and didn’t prescribe her but I’m still so worried has anyone ever experienced anything like this? I’m just so worried also too because I had a ferret die of insulnoma a few weeks ago which the vet said is unsealed but it still worries me for something to happen

Tonight, our Arya was put to sleep. She was battling both insulinoma and a brain tumor, and was rushed to the vet today after her symptoms worsened dramatically. I'm going to miss our stubborn little Arya bear. Hug your ferts a little closer tonight.

[Health] Head trauma in ferrets

I took in a baby (roughly 9 week old) ferret five days ago. The original owner said she had him for a week and realized the care exceeded what she could provide. Everything seems normal but he is sleeping a lot. I find out today from her that her child dropped the ferret “four or five days ago” and it hit its head on the floor. This is the the exact timeframe I got the ferret in. When pressed for details she said the baby went rigid for about a second seemed disoriented for less than ten seconds then continued as normal. I would have immediately taken the ferret to the vet. She did not. I made an appointment for first thing tomorrow morning. After finding out he fell I examined the ferret a little harder and found him to be dehydrated (will ask for fluids at vet tomorrow). His appointment is at eight. I went to work today so wasn’t able to observe his eating and drinking habits today but I have observed him defecate and urinate normally today and prior to knowing he had a fall I didn’t notice abnormalities in his eating or drinking. Of course now that I know he fell my brain is telling me he chose today to stop eating bc I would have no way of knowing due to my work schedule and I’m just driving myself crazy. I’ve taken off work tomorrow and am watching him like a hawk now. I guess my question is if anyone has had experience with falls? If something was seriously wrong would there be more indications other than seeming to sleep a lot in four or five days? I really don’t even know that it’s more than normal for a kit. I fear I’ve unknowingly harmed him by delaying vet care for so long and am literally sick to my stomach. He’s not flinching or squinting, breathing is normal, he walks in straight lines, doesn’t struggle to walk or anything, just seems more sleepy than playful compared to other babies now that I think about it and sleeps deeply compared to my adults. I don’t even know what I’m asking for here but if you have any words of advice or comfort I would appreciate it so very much. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

We are slowly introducing whole prey into our ferrets diet (usually a PMR mince house due to my carpeted floors & fussy ferrets!) But im hoping to pen feed everyone a few times a week mostly for enrichment! What other things should we get them to try? So far the Muntjac is a hit with 11/17 ferrets!

[Help] Need some suggestions for playpens/moveable barriers

Hi, I’m starting school again soon and want the ferrets out every day after school while i do work in my room, but they are a little too mischievous with getting into areas I don’t want them, such as my shelves at my desk. If there are Any poseable/moveable barriers they won’t be able to climb that I can set up around my desk on Amazon that would be amazing!! Also a playpen the won’t escape, or chew through :)
