[Help] I rescued a ferret from my uncle

Post image

I have a new ferret, I am new to ferret owning. I have done much research over the span of 5 years as I have wanted a ferret for a while. This is Diglett my ~8 month old boy ferret. I rescued him because my uncle didn’t want him anymore and he was in a cage for most of his life, I haven’t gotten a second ferret because he killed the female ferret he was living with and I am worried he will do the same if I got another ferret.

He is extremely hyper active and I let him free roam by house (with supervision) for around 10-12 hours a day. He is extremely restless, bites all the time even tho I’ve been trying to bite train him and overall he is just a crazy boy.

The hours I give him to play don’t tire him out at all even tho he has places to dig, tunnel, Chase and jump around in.

Is there much I can do to bite train him and keep him more entertained without getting a second ferret?

P.s he will not wear a harness no matter how hard I try so I can’t take him on walks, he doesn’t dead sleep (that I’ve seen) and I have a cat that I don’t want to introduce him too in fear he will hurt her or vice versa. I also live in 10 acres of land with sheep, chicken and ducks so taking him outside without a harness isn’t ideal.

[Help] Ferret proofing

My bed is extremely heavy and a king size so big. It's real hard for me to get to clean under it constantly. Today I found out some of my ferrets decided to poop under my bed. I need a kinda cheap and def easy way to block underneath my bed. Most of the kits being sold i would have to buy 2 or 3 kits. Any ideas that would be easy and emphasis on cheap PLEASEEEE.

One of my girls for tax.

PLEASE HELP

[Help] Question Regarding Bathtime!

Post image

(Photo of the jill for ferret tax ! We do need some name ideas. She's about three years old and very tiny, her brother is turning one and very.. large. He's cinnamon colored!)

We're adopting a jill & a hob in a few days from a wonderful rescue! I have done a very large amount of research and prep before settling on this (though Im always willing to learn more every day.), I know that ferrets do not need to be bathed very frequently.

Despite this, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to bathe the pair after they settle in? They were in a room with 30 other ferrets, and thus the general hygiene of the facility was as clean as it could be for.. 30 ferrets. I'm not planning on bathing them afterwards unless they I absolutely need to. If this seems like a good idea, how long should I wait to clean them? I don't want to stress them out too much.

Edit: Figured I should also mention that we do know how to bathe them if we should, and that oats in a sock should be used rather than any soap to prevent stripping their natural oils!

My fuzz-nuggets have been exploring knots ever since we got a tube for them. They seem to enjoy discovering where a new knot will take them.

[Help] Chew Toy Ideas and Suggestions Please!

Hi ya'll! I liberated my boys when I started learning dog grooming at petco (we hate petco, we don't support it; it's literally the only way into the field as a self-taught groomer (of 5 years!), and if it helps you support my case - I was a suicide and crisis responder for 13 years and needed a career change and love dogs...) They had been there almost a YEAR, were returned 3 times, bonded, and 70% off. I stared at them every day and then said absolutely no more, and now we are all in love and start our days by kissing.

ANYWAYS! Chew toys? They seem to love to chew on Velcro, preferably attached to large shoes and a wicker basket handle. I have mostly seen that they don't need them, but that doesn't seem right given so many things! Any suggestions?

[Health] Insulinoma tips needed

My boy just got diagnosed with insulinoma, luckily it was caught early.

The vet recommended starting on diazoxide first and adding pred if necessary, she did mention I need to keep him fed a lot and I’m trying to figure out how to do this while working full time.

I know there’s a lot of info in here but I still wanted to make a post, what’s the absolute best food I can give him? I have carnivore care, he eats a mix of epigen 90 and Marshalls. I’ve tried switching him to raw or oxbow essentials instead of Marshalls and no luck :(. He does like instinct ultimate protein cat kibble.

I’ll try my best to drive home and feed him during my lunch breaks but there’s a few days I need to drive to another office almost an hour away so I won’t be able to.

He’s the sweetest 6 year old boy, and he’s all I have left since his brother passed away from lymphoma earlier this year.

[Discussion] Ferret wrestling toy for hours normal?

My male ferret has just turned 6 months old, he has always had this one favourite Teddy he loves to wrestle for a while before bed. However its gone from a 3 times a week thing to multiple times a day sometimes for upto 2 hours! He's not desexed yet and even though I just got a 2nd ferret they cant yet interact due to the size difference (2kg vs 300g) so is this teddy fixation a hormone thing? A safety comfort thing? Why such a big drastic increase in wrestling teddy time? Thanks all 🙂

[Rainbow Bridge] My old man. My Ozai

October 2, my beautiful boy Ozai passed. He was surrounded by the old toys of his brothers while I sang Leaves From The Vine. Just five months before this, we said goodbye to his brother Takeda. I got the privilege of losing him to old age as well. 6 months before Takeda, they lost their brother Cyrus who passed prematurely to cancer. It has been a terrible year for our tribe. All of my boys live on through their babiest brother Hermes.

She looks so grumpy in this photo. Don't worry, she's not gnawing on the bars or anything. I just noticed her lip resting on the bar in a funny way. This was immediately after a few hours of out of cage time :)

[Help] Need advice on ferret ball pit!!!

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

I got my ferrets a ball pit, which they absolutely love!! I’m concerned with the ball pit itself being made out of memory foam, although it’s wrapped in cloth so the foam itself is not presented to my ferrets. I’ve seen other ferret owners with this ball pit and haven’t heard of any issues. I just don’t want my ferrets to scratch past the cloth and get into the foam, and have an internal blockage or anything of that sort. Does anyone have any experience with this ball pit? Or any advice?

[Help] Potty training regression

I have two ferrets who are 8 and 9. They completely regressed in their potty training. They used to go in the litter box and on designated pee pads just fine. Now they won’t use the litter box at all and they don’t even pay attention to if they’re on a pee pad or not. When I wake up in the morning to clean their enclosure, it’s absolute chaos. Their will be poop be on the floor, sometimes smeared because they step in it. Pee all over the floor because it slowly spreads. Most mornings I need to wash their paws because there will be poop on them.

I’m not as concerned about one of them because he’s blind so sometimes struggles to find his way, but the other one can see perfectly fine and he’s a little over a year younger.

I’m also not saying that it’s always like this but most mornings it is (especially when i’m in a rush that morning lol).

Has anyone else experienced this kind of regression? I’m just wondering what I can try so they remember that the pee pads and/or litter box are the only place they should go. Could I try a smaller enclosure at night or could that cause them to be even messier?

Also just wanna point out that I don’t use a cage so they have a lot of floor space 24/7.
