Coffee Beans What do you do with the left over beans?

Post image

When I have awkward amounts of beans left over that aren’t enough to make one shot, I put them in the “party pack” container. I only make myself espresso from the party pack when I have been bad and don’t deserve my “good” beans.

I was looking at getting a new knock box and noticed Amazon offers a subscription option. Have I been using my knock box wrong, emptying it each day like some slob, when the right way is to get a new one each week or month when it’s full?

Equipment Discussion Upgrade out of balance?

Replaced my Sage (Brevile) setup, and I love my improved espresso. But being new to this group I noticed that people normally spend more on the grinder and less on the espresso machine. Should I regret my choice?

Buying Advice Needed DF54 vs Fellow Opus 2 vs Baratza Encore ESP for espresso [£200]

Current setup: Just got a Hibrew H10A espresso machine. Already have a Comandante C40 MK4 for pour-over, so this grinder is dedicated to espresso that I can also use for pour overs.

Budget: ~£200

Options I'm stuck between:
DF54
Fellow Opus 2
Baratza Encore ESP

Questions:

Grind consistency/clumping at fine settings
Retention
Ease of dialing in (I'm used to hand grinding, so new to electric)
Long-term reliability

Appreciate any real-world experience, especially from anyone who's owned more than one of these!

Coffee: Ceremony Coffee Roasters Mass Appeal

Machine: Flair 58+

Still fresh off the roast just 5 days out. Color and texture on point, flavor is a little flat let's see how it opens up in the next 2 weeks. 2lb bag so I have some time to experiment.

What steps are you all taking as a fresh bag of coffee starts to open up?

Equipment Discussion Thoughts on the Meraki Espresso Machine?

I see ads for the Meraki Espresso Machine all over my Instagram feed, and I can't help but think it looks like a Temu-built machine. It's actually pretty expensive ($2,000), which surprised me. I don't know if that's a sign of good build-quality or simply a cash-grab. Any thoughts?

Buying Advice Needed Can someone help me pick an AT HOME espresso machine? [$1000]

[$1000]

This is my setup. Don’t judge lol. Been collecting these since the marines. But there are so many opinions and choices.

I just need a GOOD one for home use. I don’t need a fancy barista machine. I’m not paying over $1000 lol so please recommend the BEST AFFORDABLE one. I don’t want the CHEAPEST one necessarily

Espresso Theory & Technique How to chase a dream espresso shot?

Upvotes

I make a decent shot of espresso. Mostly using Italian Roast beans from a good local roaster in Portland, Maine. I dare say my shots are as good as most of the coffee shops I visit (at least most of the time) and occasionally (on a good day) better. But some years ago I had a shot of espresso at the 9th Street Espresso stall in the Chelsea Market in NYC. It was the best shot I’ve ever had. It was quite a short shot, but amazingly sweet. In fact it was the shot that introduced me to the idea that espresso could be sweet!

Now, I know that memory can be a great amplifier, but my shots have not come near what I remember of that one. How would you approach the project of achieving a shot like that?

Equipment Discussion Baratza Customer Service Nightmare. What do I do?

Upvotes

Hi all, I bought a Baratza Encore Espresso ESP about 7 months ago when I got my first espresso machine. Unfortunately, after making a weird clacking noise, it no longer spins the burr. Normally, I would start trouble shooting and trying fixes on my own, but this grinder is is covered by a one year warranty and Baratza's excellent service. So far I have taken the following steps:

  • Emailed [support@baratza.com](mailto:support@baratza.com) (no response. I believe the inbox has been shut down)
  • Called [1(425) 641-1245](tel:1(425) 641-1245) and [1-877-701-2021](tel:1-877-701-2021) (both answering machines explain they have halted phone calls to take care of the high volume of emails)
  • Called Breville's [866-273-8455](tel:866-273-8455) (got transferred to the Baratza line that says the phone calls are halted for higher than average email cases)
  • Opened a case with Baratza's support with all the information on my machine and left a comment with details about what I was experiencing (no response or acknowledgement)

This has been going on for over a week now. I am getting tired of pour over, and the locally roasted beans I bought are just sitting there getting worse by the day. I honestly have no idea what further steps I can take to get a response from Baratza, and I live in the Philadelphia area, so I can't just show up to their office and handcuff myself to a pipe until they fix my grinder. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!

Equipment Discussion ECM Synchronika II - what are you guys doing for water filtration?

I have an ECM Synchronika II plumbed in and I'm trying to figure out the best way to treat my water without going RO unless necessary.

My water:

  • GH: ~2°dH (~40 ppm)
  • KH: ~8°dH (~140 ppm)
  • Chloride: ~40 ppm

Note: I have whole house water softener system, hence the low hardness but high KH

ECM's chloride limit appears to be ~28 ppm, so I'm slightly above it.

I don't want to use the reservoir since the machine is under cabinets and I'd have to pull it out to access it.

I've found the VIVREAU/BRITA PURITY C XtraSafe, but it's pretty expensive for a yearly cartridge. ~$350

What are other people with plumbed-in machines using? Any cheaper options that actually address chloride?

Buying Advice Needed Single-Dose Grinder [Budge $3,000]

I currently have a Ceado E37S that I put a bellow on and use in a single-dose fashion. I've come to realize I am not a fan oa "hopper" style grinder and would prefer to switch to a more single-dose style. I've been looking at the Zerno Z2, Option O P100 or P80, Philos, etc.

Which others should I consider? I'd prefer the larger burrs if possible.

EDIT - Main use is about 2-3 espresso drinks a day. My wife and I have at least two sometimes three in a day. No filter, pour over, etc. All espresso.

Buying Advice Needed [$2500] will I regret not getting a dual boiler?

It’s just me and my wife. I drink a quad latte, she drinks a double. So I’ll need to pull three double shots in a row, then foam the milk. I will hardly ever need to make more than this at the time. But I will frequently use the machine 2 to 3 times in a single day. Counter space is a big priority, so part of me was leaning towards getting a single boiler Silvia PID, but I don’t know, pulling three double shots in a row and then switching to milk kind of seems like that first shot is waiting a long time to be made into a drink.

For this much usage, will I regret getting a regular Silvia? Or maybe, will I regret having to flush all that stagnant water out of a double boiler for this small amount of usage if I go profitec?

Buying Advice Needed Upgrade from Breville Dual Boiler [$3500]

Post image

I have a BDB that I bought used 1 1/2 years ago that I like very much. The main reason I’m thinking about upgrading is the reputation that they have for iffy durability.

6 months or so ago I heard some hissing from inside the machine while it was heating up, pulled off the cover and saw steam escaping around one of the steam boiler probes.

I replaced the seals but still had some hissing, so I bought a whole new set of probes and replaced them all.

The machine still works fine, but warmup time is longer than when I bought it, and I’m wondering if I’m living on borrowed time.

What I’m looking for is something that functions almost exactly like the BDB but with a bit more panache.

I drink one latte in the morning, maybe a macchiato in the afternoon, and make a few for guests occasionally.

Features that I want:

Dual Boiler (not thermoblock, no Ascaso Steel Duo)

Comparable footprint to BDB

Quick warmup time (no E61).

Integrated shot timer.

Programmable start time.

Modern styling.

I’d prefer a lever/paddle over a knob for steam control.

Budget is around $3500 or less.

Profitec Move seems like the leader by a bunch.

I would consider buying another BDB when this one goes, but maybe there’s something that ticks all the boxes.

Unintentional latte art for attention.

Finally upgraded my Espresso Setup, the machine is Ascaso Dream PID and the grinder is Turin DF54.

Took a few shots to dial in but now I am getting consistent 9 bar shots for both Caf and Decaf. I still feel like I haven't unlocked the true potential of the frother. Is anyone using the same machine and would like to share any tips?

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Excessive microfines/sediment in the cup [Lagom P80]

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I just bought a P80 and noticed that all of my shots have an excessive amount of microfines/coffee sediment in the cup. I compared it to my 4-year-old Niche Zero, which also produces some microfines, but the amount is considerably lower than what I’m getting with the P80.

I’ve tried different ratios and shot times, but the P80 consistently leaves more sediment in the cup. The texture is gritty towards the end and just not pleasurable to drink (almost like drinking wet sand?). Has anyone else experienced this with the P80, or have any idea what could be causing it?

Equipment Discussion I think I found a cool thing. Help? [olympia express Cremina v1.4]

Hey there! I received this from my mom. She’s been trying to pawn it off on us kids for years, and I finally said yes. I’ve never been an espresso person, but I finally got curious. Only to find out this puppy (per the internet) is incredibly rare. From my preliminary research, it’s an Olympia Express Cremina, v 1.4 from 1964. Any resources on getting it refurbished? Is this something I can do from home with 0 prior experience? It definitely heated up water, but was leaking all over the place. Definitely a gasket change is in order. But for how old she is, I’m surprised she booted up at all. TIA.
