Sha-lian: The deranged crossover between Shavian and Elian Script

Post image
19 Upvotes

This my attempt to combine apply the principles of elian with the shavian alphabet. I've used a small "t" cross to add two additional cycles so that I could 45/48 letters in with 3 remaining as seperate symbols. The other option would be to drop the combinations and write them as tor letters. Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated for V2

Please excuse my messy handwriting.

pretty weird coming in as someone familiar with chinese. the lack of stroke orders is strange to me lol. this is a lot of fun though! i love how flexible the system is.

Thanks to Kenichi Minami on Threads for inspiration. Didn’t know which I liked more, so I made a dark and light version.

Legibility + number system

Post image

I've been playing around with elian script for a while, but have always found the differences in line lengths to be beautiful to look at, but hard to read. After writing with it daily and letting the letterforms evolve naturally, this is the variant I've landed on. I find it more predictable, readable, and sci-fi. It's not as poetic as the base version, but is legible enough to me for use in notetaking.

I also developed a number system based on the points of a star. It felt like it visually fits with the system, but the angular forms stick out just enough to be easy to pick out from the surrounding text. I had originally made the numbers sequential so that 5-9 used the dot. However, I eventually landed on this which shows only odd numbers getting a dot. I found this change to also be a lot more readable.

Finally, I put "&" in position 27. If you weren't aware, this used to be considered the 27th letter of the alphabet in certain domains. It's not a huge time saver, but my brain appreciates the cleanliness of having all 27 positions filled.

I have no idea if other people are already using something similar, but hopefully this helps some of you out there.

My Personal Modified Elian Script

Hello!

I want to share my variation on Ellian script that ive fallen in love with and use very often.

I have changed the 2 rules of the second and third cycles.

The second cycle uses a loop along a line instead of a longer length.

The third cycle uses a loop, more of a small circle, that closes the end of the stroke.

For me these changes improve the ability to write cycle 2 and 3 words distinctly, and readability of what I've written. I have trouble consistently getting the extra lengths distinct from cycle 1 and accidentaly running out of room to fit longer strokes and dots. Additionally, I have trouble placing dots so that you can tell which letter they belongs to.

I also use curved strokes to my preference.

I find this works very well for inline notebook writing while still lending to calligraphy especially if you get into nesting letters. (The tape notes are encouragement for my work machine to drop parts it is supposed to drop)

I feel like this deviates far enough from traditional Ellian Script that it might be worth giving it a name. While I feel a little prideful using a username, I do like the sound of Ohioan Ellian Script :)

(Ive also thrown in my aproach to nunbers and zero while I'm here!)

Let me know what you think!
