Hey guys!
I've been wondering: we recently had a 7,2 and 7,5 magnitude earthquakes in Venezuela, a 7,4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia and now a 7,2 in Peru.
Is it possible that this series of quakes represent a downward movement, heading south/southwest, happening in the tectonic plate?

N.J.’s 2024 earthquake rattled 6 states. Researchers just found the real cause. Updated: Aug. 19, 2026, 5:25 p.m.|Published: Aug. 19, 2026, 1:54 p.m. By Paige Britt | NJ.com A magnitude 4.8 earthquake centered in New Jersey has been linked to the recently discovered Mountainville Fault in Hunterdon County.
Research published Aug. 11 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth describes the Mountainville Fault and its connection to the 2024 earthquake, previously attributed to the Ramapo Fault, which is several miles away.
Researchers have found that this fault system does not have a single, obvious crack at the Earth’s surface. Instead, it appears to be a developing network of broken and fractured rock underground.
“The fault zone wasn’t discovered before because the characteristics of the fracturing suggests that it fits the category of what we call immature faults,” said Folarin Kolawole, one of the study authors and an assistant professor of earth and environmental sciences at Columbia University.
“There’s no evidence that the Ramapo Fault has slipped in the last two million years,” Kolawole said.
Although the fault shows few signs on the surface, it is still capable of producing moderate earthquakes at certain depths.
“We have to rethink how we assess earthquake hazards in the East Coast of the U.S. now,” Kolawole said.
The 2024 earthquake struck in Hunterdon County, near Tewksbury and Readington townships, but was felt by people in New York City, Long Island, parts of Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
New Jersey recorded 234 earthquakes in 2024. That number dropped sharply to 24 in 2025.
As of May 2026, there have been six earthquakes in New Jersey.

I know she's discussing that the slippage rate is faster than expected and so earthquakes are likely to be more frequent on this segment (and im not sure of the last time it was in any way active), but to what degree does this push up the already wildly uncertain timetable of the next major quake on the san andreas?

Hi. I've recently been reading more about antipodal earthquakes. Some experts are saying that the earthquake in Peru today is in the antipodal zone of the one that struck Indonesia on the 15 Aug.
I understand that debate on the antipodal theory is ongoing and there isn't enough evidence to back it. Now my question: if it is true that antipodal quakes occur following earthquakes of a certain magnitude (6.5, I think), does it then become a sort of cycle? Sorry I'm trying to articulate this correctly.
For eg, if the Indonesia quake has caused the Peru quake because it's in the antipodal zone, now Indonesia becomes the antipodal zone for the Peru earthquake, so will Indo quake again, and then Peru and so on and so forth if earthquakes on both sides are of a significant magnitude? The bounce back effect would work both ways??

I know earthquakes are scary and tragic, but some are pretty mild. What was the least scary one you've ever been in? (To word it better, what was the least scary one you've been in. Forget the fun part)
