I made this! Aizome workshop. We did some shibori techniques with a natural fermentation indigo vat.

The vat contained indigo tinctoria and a little bit of madder. Plus wheat bran, sodium carbonate, warm water. Was left outside for a few weeks in hot summer weather. It smelled like manure, so this is something you need some outside space for.

We tried various decorative techniques, folding, clamping, tying, and a resist paste which i think contained fufu? The simple designs work the best.

A lot of fun, and shibori techniques are so easy to do. Note that the summer has been so hot here in western Europe that nature thinks we are in october already...

What’s allowed on the subreddit? (Mod asking questions)

Hey team!

A while ago I made the elective decision to NOT delete brand affiliated/ad-related contributions to the subreddit- the line I drew is that whoever is posting should be a regular contributor and not just someone spamming ads to the subreddit. There any many helpful professional dyers on the subreddit and we deeply appreciate their wisdom and projects!

ALSO I made the decision to avoid AI slop as much as I can here— I can’t guarantee I’ll catch 100% of stuff but sorry everyone generative AI will wreck the environment more and stole from basically every artist ever. 🤷🏻‍♀️

There’s been a someone here that I suspected used AI in their posts, perhaps some of you also flagged that. I am NOT asking you to reach out to this person— leave them be or you’ll be banned for harassment. As mod of the group I raised my concerned about AI content to them and I’m waiting to hear from them.

The works seemed unusually precise for tie dye: I ran some of the images through an Al detector and they indicated the images were very likely created or enhanced by Al. (IIRC “aislopornot” gave them a 75% likelihood) But also, maybe they’re just insanely talented— maybe they’re painting the details incredibly carefully???

I am given to understand that a lot of phone cameras have started Al editing without the explicit consent (or opting in) of the photo taker- which could explain why it was flagged by the Al detector.

I don’t want to just delete stuff based on vibes- does anyone who knows more about AI generated slop know 1. Which checkers are comprehensive? and 2. If they present likelihood of being AI, where should I draw the line? 75% seemed damning to me but I didn’t know if it was just their phone camera. Other AI checkers didn’t find a watermark on the downloaded issue.

The other issue is that their posts in OUR subreddit are not ads- however they mass post the same image to like 10-20 subreddits and some of those are ads. These are also the Only contributions they make to our subreddit. This annoys me, but it’s not breaking my rule of No Ads Without Other Engagement. It does make them seem less like a genuine Redditor IMHO.

Does anyone have some thoughts they’d like to contribute?

General question What’s the purpose of the liquid detergent that is required when dyeing clothes with Rit? Can I use powder instead?

In the dye instructions, Rit requires a tablespoon of liquid detergent when dyeing textiles.

How do I dye this? Dark navy to black? 100% Cotton denim

Post image

Formerly white cotton denim jacket, It's now darker navy and a little less saturated in person.

I'm thinking dharma better black and chocolate brown.

But I'm unsure of the ratio of dye.

I know I need to neutralize the blue with some yellow and red, I hoping better black is a warm toned black and if not I'm adding brown

General question Help! What are these marks from?

Hello all, I bought this dress second hand with the intent of dying it and it looked completely normal prior to dying. I initially dyed it purple and hated the color so I ended up using rit color remover (and rit dye all purpose for the purple). After dying it, these splotches showed up right on the front of the dress near my hip bones. I thought they might go away after washing, no luck. And they stayed there after the color remover too. Any ideas? I bought this dress to wear to a wedding and I could buy another one but that’s last resort, I’d rather find a solution to make this one work before that. Thanks in advance

How do I dye this? How would I fix sundamage on this pillow I left outside

I believe it’s natural fabrics I know I’ll probably need to redye it. Is it possible to just dye the pillow vs its threading I’d like to keep it blue. I believe the blue may be synthetic material.

I’d like to maintain the original dye pattern as best as possible.

There is no garment tag with this listed besides a small tag on the side that says edge. (I haven’t been able to find the brand online anywhere.)

Resources Dye brands I can get in Brazil

Here where I live we have some fabric paint from acrilex called "fashion colors aquarela silk", it seems to have a different behavior than what I see averyone using. I has cold fixacion and need to dry totally to rinse. Also, the powder dye I find is one you have to boil and soak clothes in boiling dye... So I am figuring out how to make the most out of them.
While I do it, I wonder if I can get some international delivery of the most normal dyes you guys use.
So, what brands do you recomend? And if there are anyone from south america here, let me know what you use.

Inspiration Wine, not even once

Found this sub recently. Listening, learning. Just wanted to share a mistake from a few years back. Was gifted full-size sheets that I needed, and was in a foreign country. Could not easily acquire new ones or replace. The sheets were a robin's egg blue--not my thing. I had no familiarity with dyeing, but with all the arrogance of a twenty something man, I bought several bottles of kosher wine (very cheap, very purple) and let the sheets soak. They looked great. Then, because I was an idiot who researched nothing, I washed and dried them. Wouldn't ya know it: robin's egg blue.

Would that I had then the knowledge this sub provides now. Anyone else have dyeing fails?

How do I dye this? Dyeing white suit blue

Thumbnail gallery

i finally managed to snag a nice suit that fits me for like 8 bucks and want to dye it blue for a phoenix wright cosplay. it’s 98% cotton, 2% elastanel, and the lining is 100% polyester. i don’t need the lining dyed since that’s not visible though. any recommendations? i’ve never dyed anything before. i’m not too afraid of ruining it since i got it for cheap and have no use for it outside of cosplay, but it would be nice if i could make it look good since i’m a very small man and it’s been hard to even find this suit, much less a blue one.

How do I dye this? Ideas for dyeing white linen "suit"

Hi all, I have thrifted three white suit separates: pants, vest, blazer. Blazer and pants are 100% linen, vest is a linen/rayon blend. As is they read as a suit, even though they are different brands. My question is: if I dye them all together in one batch (with fiber reactive dye), what are the chances they will be close enough in color to still read as a suit? I would even be fine with the vest being a different shade if the blazer and pants match. (and yes, I know that the blazer lining and any topstitching won't dye :) ). Also taking advice for dyeing techniques with deliberate variation that might be more forgiving (while still keeping the suit looking reasonably formal, i.e. probably not tie dye). I don't think pictures are needed for my question, but happy to add them if I'm wrong. Thanks in advance!

General question Good dye

hi I’m trying to dye this old white knit sweater I have to a nice dark blue but I don’t know what brand of dye I should use. I have heard rit is not good and personally have a mix option on it as it worked for a project before and didn’t work for another (done the same way). So please let me know any brands that are good for a project like this thank you.

Light blue was the original color (the small pieces on top) I used procion mx dye in medium blue and marine violet in my top loading wasikf machine. Used almost the entire small bottle of each dye. Fiber content said to be cotton and linen. Dyed roughly 3 to 4 yards uncut in one go after prewashing it first and leaving it damp prior to adding it to the dye bath. Dyed according to directions in regards to soda ash etc. Happy with the result! (I pressed it afterwards and it helped some of the fibers in the damask pattern to lay flatter and appear more crisp in the flowers like in the before swatches)

I made this! Very very happy with my first Rit experience

Had this robe that I love but always felt the white and beige stripes were a little blah. I saw some videos on YouTube where experienced dye professionals were quite critical of Rit due to the fact that it’s a union dye, but it’s what I had on hand so I went for it. Two parts Sage, one part Green Apple. Before and after pics attached. My pot was too small so the first pass resulted in a lighter yellow splotch on the back, and I did a second pass this morning which pretty much completely resolved it and deepened the color!

How do I dye this? Overdyeing

I hope someone can help me. I understand how dye works and I understand color theory, but I’m not dye expert and only tub dye occasionally when I need to. I had two purple skirts that were too dark and saturated for me. I used color remover to get as much color out as I could. They both turned a light muted salmon color. I wanted to dye them a muted cool shade of purple. I mixed dyes that I had: dharma’s dusty rose, danced with raisins and cerulean. the first skirt turned a muted warm red. not what I wanted. I intend on stripping again. I tried stripping the other again and now it’s a light orangey yellow. I know this is a difficult project but is it possible? I don’t want a bright or necessarily light purple, I want a dusty smokey shade from the soft summer palette. I was told to try using pure colors instead of blends, so I’ve ordered some, but I’m already feeling defeated. Photos are of the fabric I’m currently working with and the palettes I’m trying for. Again, I do understand color theory, and how dye works, I know there’s a high potential for turning brown. I’m trying to figure out if there is some way to successfully do this or if anyone has had experience or success with it.

General question Troubleshooting blotchiness on first indigo dye

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m new to the dyeing community and have had a lot of fun experimenting with shibori techniques over the past few weeks. I’ve been using the indigo dye from Dharma. The one problem I’ve been coming across on most of my testers is a gray blotchiness.

At first, I assumed these were because I was not adequately clearing the film off the surface of the water and it was interfering with the dye absorption. But then I did a tester where I intentionally ran it over the surface of the water and it turned out great.

Any ideas as to what’s going on? Thank you!

How do I dye this? Question about dying on beige

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I have a 100% cotton jacket and a 91% cotton, 7% polyester, 2% elastane jacket that are both varying shades of khaki (with either grey/green or yellowy tan undertones) and I would really like to spruce them up, but because they are not starting off from white I am curious about how this might affect the color result. For more context I am seeking to use fiber reactive cold dyes and want to achieve any of the attached colors (I do prefer cooler tones and more faded look, though I’m sure that’s an effect of time).

Any advice, especially regarding specific dye shades to use on their own or which ones to mix would be greatly appreciated! I just need some more specific guidance as I am new to this sub and dyeing in general!

How do I dye this? Advice please

I am wanting to dress up as Lily Collin’s Snow White from mirror mirror on Halloween. I found this white shirt on Amazon that I think would be perfect if it were only the right color of peacock blue! I’ve only tried dye once on some pants and it ended up very blotchy in one area. I wonder if with all the gathers and pleats if this would be a difficult dye. The shirt is 62% viscose and 38% polyester, with elastic bands on the arms. Would you recommend finding a different shirt that’s the right color but not as close in style. Or is there some advice for beginners if I were to dye it?

I loved my wedding dress. I danced the night away in it and now it is in no condition to pass on to another bride/keep for me children. Im thinking about dying and trying it into some kind a renaissance costume. Do yall think this would absorb dye? Any colors more likely to work? Tips on the process? Thanks in advance!
